Cardinal Basketball Teams Split in De Smet

December 22, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys basketball teams played a double-header in De Smet against the Bulldogs on Monday, December 21st.  The girls team took home a 48-34 win.  The boys team suffered their first loss of the season, 33-69.

The Cardinal girls needed a quarter to get going, but once they did, they locked down the Bulldogs.   De Smet held a nine-point lead in the first quarter and led 16-7 heading into the second quarter.  That’s when the St Mary Cardinal defense took control.  The Cardinals held De Smet to just two points in the second quarter, while the offense scored 19, and St Mary led 28-18 at halftime.

St Mary’s defense continued to give De Smet problems in the second half.  The Cardinals outscored the Bulldogs 10-6 in the third quarter, and then built a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter for their third win of the season.

Ella Heinitz had 20 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.  Courntey Brown had seven points and three steals.  Ella Griffin finished with six points and three rebounds.  Sydney Klein and Addyson Gilbert both had four points each.

The St Mary boys team ran into a hot-shooting De Smet team on a night where the shots were not falling for themselves.  The Cardinals got down big in the first quarter and were not able to recover.  De Smet outscored St Mary in every quarter.  The Bulldogs led 28-9 after the first quarter, and the lead grew to 47-17 by halftime.  The Bulldogs then outscored St Mary 22-16 in the second half.

The shooting percentages between the two teams tells the story of the game.  The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 60% (28-47) from the field, 56% (10-18) from three-point area, and 50% (3-6) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals, however, shot just 23% (10-44) from the field, 20% (3-15) from three-point area, and 77% (10-13) from the free-throw line.

Connor Libis had 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals in the game.  Sam Palmer finished with eight points.  Ashaun Roach-Valandra had five points, three rebounds, and two assists.  John Pica and Max Herber both had four points each.  Herber also had seven rebounds.

Both of the Cardinal teams will be in Chester on Monday, December 28th, for a double-header with the Flyers.

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal and Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team met at the Entringer Classic in Colman on Saturday, December 19th.  This was the second time the two schools competed against one another this sports season.  The schools played one another in volleyball earlier this year with the Cardinals getting the victory in that contest.  Just like the volleyball match this year, the basketball match-up was a hard-fought, close battle bringing the community together in excitement.

St Mary was able to, again, extend the lead throughout the third quarter.  The Cardinals outscored Dell Rapids 13-10 for a 37-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Quarriers started to make a run in the fourth quarter.  They started the quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to six at 39-33.  Dell Rapids got the lead down to two points, 43-41, after a Jayme Schmidt three-point basket with 1:47 to play.  The Cardinals were able to make their free-throws down the stretch, scoring seven straight points, to extend the lead to 50-41.  The Quarriers made two free-throws at the end of the game, but the Cardinals took the win 50-43.

The Quarriers were led by Zoey Hilmoe with 11 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Jayme Schmidt had 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Mady Vanoverbeke had seven points, and Haileigh Barnhart and Alli De Stigter both had six points each.

Buzzer Beater Caps off Come-from-Behind Win for Quarrier Boys

December 19, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

Facing a 52-40 deficit to start the fourth quarter against the Tea Area Titans, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team seemed unfazed with the task at hand.  Dell Rapids scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to cut the Titan lead in half.  The Titans seemed to still be in control of the game through first half of the fourth quarter.  Austin Lake made a driving layup with 4:40 to play to put Tea Area ahead by nine at 62-53.  Dell Rapids went on a 6-1 run over the next three minutes to pull within four at 63-59.

A layup by Conner Rentz with :47 to go in the game put Dell Rapids down by just two points at 63-61.  Caden Ellingson responded with a reverse layup with :38 on the clock and also drew a foul on the play.  Ellingson missed the free-throw, and Colin Rentz  drove the length of the court for a layup.  After an errant pass that was stolen by Brayden Pankonen, Landon Ruesink found a wide-open Coby Maeschen who made a layup from the right block after a pump fake to tie the game at 65-65 with :07.4 to go.  The Titans called their final timeout to try to set up the game-winning play.

Full court pressure by the Quarrier defense forced a Tea travel in the back court, and Dell Rapids had a chance to win the game with :04.4 seconds.  Col. Rentz put the ball in play in front of his bench with a pass to Maeschen.  Col. Rentz broke for the hoop, and Maeschen handed him the ball.  With is body twisting, Col. Rentz looped a shot with his right hand towards the hoop, and the ball went off the backboard and through the next as time expired for the 67-65 win.

The game lived up to the hype of an early-season top-five match-up between the two teams.  Dell Rapids entered the game ranked third in the media polls, while Tea Area was ranked fourth.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first two quarters of the game trading leads along the way.  Dell Rapids held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 16-13.  Tea outscored Dell Rapids by three points in the second quarter, and the game was tied 32-32 at halftime.  The game was again tied 38-38 with 4:30 to play in the third quarter, but the Titans finished the quarter on a 14-2 run for a 52-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter to set the stage for the dramatic come-from-behind win for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 57% (27-47) from the field, just 11% (2-18) from three-point area, and 69% (11-16) from the free-throw line.  The Titans finished shooting 51% (27-53) from the field, 25% (3-12) from three-point area, and 62% (8-13) from the free-throw line.

Colin Rentz had 29 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals in the game.  Connor Rentz finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Maeschen ended with eight points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Landon Ruesink also had eight points.  Carter Nelson had five points and four rebounds.  Cael Lundin led all scorers with 32 points, along with five rebounds, and four assists for the Titans.  Jeff Worth added 13 points and five rebounds.

Dell Rapids (3-0) will have a break until Thursday, December 31st.  The Quarriers will play the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the Entringer Classic in Colman at 5:00 p.m.

Rally Falls Short for Cardinal Girls on Senior Night

December 19, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

A fourth-quarter rally fell just a little short for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team.  The Cardinals trailed 41-27 heading into the final quarter.  St Mary cut the lead in half, but ran out of time as the Colman-Egan Hawks took a 50-43 win on Thursday, December 17th.

The Cardinals and Hawks traded leads in the first quarter and ultimately ended in a 13-13 tie.  Neither team was able to get into much of an offensive flow in the second quarter as the two teams combined for a total of 10 points.  Colman-Egan led by two points, 19-17, at halftime.

Colman-Egan started to make shots early in the third quarter and went on a 10-0 run to start the second half.  The Hawks led 29-17 before the Cardinals got their first point of the second half.  That 10-0 proved to be the difference in the game.

Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Ella Griffin ended with 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Karlie Klein had six points and six rebounds, and Courtney Brown finished with six points and five rebounds.  Braiden Westley had 17 points and six rebounds for Colman-Egan followed by Mackenzie Hemmer with 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

St Mary held a senior night celebration prior to the game.  This year’s seniors are Ella Griffin and Karlie Klein.

The Dell Rapids Cardinal basketball teams held the first games of the season on Tuesday, December 15th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The girls and boys held a double-header against the Michell Christian Golden Eagles.

The girls found themselves trailing 3-0 in the opening moments of the game, but that was the only lead the Golden Eagles would have.  St Mary grabbed control of the game midway through the first quarter as they went ahead 15-9 by the quarter break.  The Cardinals pushed the lead to 10 points by halftime at 28-18.

The defense for the Cardinals was the difference in the game as they held Mitchell Christian to single digit points in each of the four quarters.  The Golden Eagles, again, only got nine points in the third quarter, and then St Mary held them to just five points in the fourth quarter for the season-opening win, 50-32.

The Cardinal boys went on a 34-point run to open the game.  St Mary held Mitchell Christian scoreless until near the midway point of the second quarter.  The opening run was all St Mary would need as they would cruise to a 67-26 season-opening victory.

Sam Palmer had a game-high 16 points with two rebounds and two assists.  Connor Libis finished with 14 points, five assists, and four rebounds.  Max Herber had 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Connar Kangas ended with nine points.
