Tri-Valley Wrestling 6th at Jesse James Invitational

The Tri-Valley Mustang Wrestling team finished 6th in the nine-team Jesse James Invitational held at Garretson on Saturday, January 9th.

The Mustangs finished with a total of 78.0 points.  Chamberlain placed first with 193.5 points.  Parkston was second with 139.5 points, and Elk Point-Jefferson was third with 130.0 points.

Porter Jensen and Ethan Nehlich both won their respective weight-class brackets.  Isaac Nehlich had a second place finish.  Landon Reiser placed fourth.

Tri-Valley will travel to Dakota Valley High School for duals against Dakota Valley and Elk Point-Jefferson on Tuesday, January 12th.

Quarrier Wrestling Places 7th at Brandon Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed 7th at the Dan Pansch Invitational at Brandon Valley High School on Saturday, January 9th.  There were a total of nine teams that participated in the tournament.

Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 81.0.  Brandon Valley was first with 235.0 points.  Rapid City Stevens was second at 225.0, and Tea placed third with 160.5 points.

Jacob Vogel won the 132-pound weight class.  Weston Mason finished second in the 160-pound weight class.  Andrew Weiland and Carson Roach both had third place finishes.  Hunter Nelson finished fifth.

Dell Rapids will host a wrestling meet on Tuesday, January 12th.  The Quarriers will have a dual with Madison and Brookings.  The meet can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Libis Sets All-Time School Scoring Record in Win over Redhawks

Connor Libis is the new Dell Rapids St Mary High School scoring leader in school history.  Going into the home game against Estelline/Hendricks on Friday, January 8th, Libis trailed current head coach Colby Fitzgerald by just 23 points on the list.

Libis broke the record on a three-point shot in the third quarter that gave him 24 points in the game.  Libis finished the game with 27 points lead the Cardinals in their 77-52 win over the Redhawks.  Libis now has 2,298 total points in his career with 13 more regular season games left on the schedule.

St Mary had no problems with Estelline/Hendricks in the ball game.  The Cardinals hot shooting in the first half propelled them to a big lead.  St Mary led 27-12 at the end of the first half and led 52-23.  The lead grew to 73-42 by the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting right at 50% (29-58) from the field, 52% (12-23) on three-point shots, and 50% (7-14) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 40 team rebounds and 15 team assists.

St Mary had another 20-point scorer in the game after Libis’ 27 points.  Sam Palmer also notched 20 points and had four rebounds and four assists.  Max Herber finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Ashaun Roach-Valandra and Ty Brown both had six points each.

The Cardinals (5-2) will travel to Elkton to play the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks in a big Region 4B match-up on Tuesday, January 12th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Pankonen Sets Record in Win over Canton

Brayden Pankonen set the Dell Rapids High School record for most three-point shots made in a game in a 77-33 win over the Canton C-Hawks in Dell Rapids on Thursday, January 7th.

Pankonen was 5-5 on three-point shots in the first quarter and 4-6 in the second quarter for 9-11 in the first half.  The nine made three-pointers in the first half tied the school record that was held by Carson Rentz.  Pankonen made two more three-point shots in the second half to set the new school record at 11 and finished the game 11-17 on three-point shots.

Dell Rapids was in complete control the entire game.  They opened the game on a 20-0 run and led 32-2 at the end of the first quarter.  The lead grew to 52-12 by halftime.  The Quarriers then outscored Canton 25-21 in the final two quarters as the running clock was in play the entire second half of the game.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 56% (27-48) from the field, 55% (12-22) from three-point area, and 61% (11-18) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 28 team rebounds, 19 team assists, and 11 steals.

Pankonen led all scorers with 35 points on the night.  Colin Rentz had 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals.  Landon Ruesink also finished in double figures with 10 points and five assists.  Every varsity player for Dell Rapids scored at least two points in the game.

Dell Rapids (5-1) will have a big road test on Tuesday, January 12th.  The Quarriers will head to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers.

Quarrier Girls Rally Falls Short Against Canton

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team erased a double-digit deficit and had a two-point lead late in the game, but the Canton C-Hawks took the 52-48 win on Thursday, January 7th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The Quarriers were playing in just their second home game of the year and first since December 15th.

Canton took the early momentum and lead in the first two quarters of the game.  The C-Hawks built a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 21-11.  The Quarriers started to built a little momentum in the second quarter.  They cut the lead to 31-23 by halftime.

The Dell Rapids defense held Canton to just six third quarter points as the Quarriers took the lead.  Dell Rapids led took a 37-33, outscoring Canton 14-2 in a six minute stretch.  The Quarriers held a 40-37 lead heading into the final quarter.  Dell Rapids still maintained a 45-43 lead with 3:45 to play in the game, but Canton went on a 9-3 run to close out the game for the win.

Zoey Hilmoe finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Maggie Schmidt had 13 points and four steals.  Mady Vanoverbeke added 10 points, four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Jayme Schmidt had seven points and eight rebounds.

Dell Rapids (0-6) will travel to Lennox on Monday, January 11th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Kenneth Heinemann

Kenneth Leo Heinemann, 85, of rural Dell Rapids, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Trail Ridge Assisted Living in Sioux Falls.

Memorial Mass will begin at 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids.  Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.  Service will be live streamed at the Minnehaha Funeral Home & Cremation Services Facebook Page.  Masks are required at the visitation and church.

Kenneth was born on January 25th, 1935 to Leo and Genevieve (Kopren) Heinemann, in Garretson, SD. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Garretson. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy serving on the aircraft carrier Hornet.  In 1956, he was honorably discharged.

Kenneth was united in marriage to Maxine (Bee) Botten on October 17th 1959 at St. Joseph in Montevideo, MN. They moved to California where he worked as a painter. He later return to South Dakota to help his parents run the family farm. He later purchased his own farm where he and his wife raised their 6 children.

In addition to farming, Kenneth worked for the ASCS agency, painted numerous homes and farm buildings. He served on the election boards and Logan Township. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Orders of Foresters and a dedicated member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. When he retired from farming, he began a new career working as an accountant for the Dell Rapids Grain Elevator.

Kenneth enjoyed gatherings with both family and friends, fishing and golfing

Left to cherish his memory was his loving wife of 61 years, Maxine (Bee) of Dell Rapids, SD, and six children: Lonny (Jacki) Heinemann of Sioux Fall, SD, Julie (Vince) Devlin of Dell Rapids, SD, Bruce (Nikki) Heinemann of Trent, SD, Peggy (Brian) Shaffner of Lexington, TN, Debbie (Michael) Miles of Montrose, SD, Kevin (Joy) Heinemann of Harrisburg, SD, his sister Ida (Ervin) Stelzer of Sioux Fall, SD 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lee and Gen Heinemann and an infant son Jeffrey Heinemann.

Cardinal Girls Notch Fifth Win of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team finally got to play another home game after nearly a month.  The Cardinals hosted the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Thursday, January 7th, their first home game since December 17th.

The Cardinals used a big first half on their way to a 58-42 victory over the Redhawks.  St Mary ended the first quarter with a 14-6 lead and then extended that margin to 33-17 by halftime.  The Cardinals maintained the 16-point lead throughout the second half as both teams finished with 25 points each.

St Mary had a very balanced scoring attack in the game.  Courtney Brown and Ella Heinitz both had 10 points each.  Ella Griffin and Addyson Gilbert both finished with nine points.  Brianna Griffin had seven points, and Madala Hanson had six points.  Gilbert, E. Griffin, and Karlie Klein all had five rebounds each.  Gilbert also had a team high four assists.  Brown led the team with four steals.

The Cardinals (5-2) will head to Elkton on Monday, January 11th, to play the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.

Mustang Girls Fall to Mt Vernon/Plankinton, Boys Win in Overtime

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Thursday, January 7th in a double-header.  The girls fell to the Titans 50-33, while the boys came home with a 74-71 overtime win.

The Mustang girls had a couple of leads early in the game.  Tri-Valley got out to a 9-3 lead with 3:33 to play in the opening quarter, but the Titans ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 12-11.  Tri-Valley again had a 15-14 lead early in the second quarter, but Mt Vernon/Plankinton went on a 9-0 run and did not trail again in the game.  The Titans led 27-20 at halftime and 40-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Tri-Valley only shot 29% (14-48) from the field in the game, 29% (6-21) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line.  The Mustangs had 29 team rebounds, but also had 20 turnovers.

Tabor Teel finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Steph Buchmann had seven points and four rebounds.  Lauren Grinde and Blayne Gacke both had six rebounds each.

The Tri-Valley boys got a layup from Bryce Kienast with just :02 on the clock to tie the game against the Titans, and then ended the game on an 8-0 run in overtime for a 74-71 win.

The Mustangs struggled a little bit offensively, but made up for it by forcing 48 Mt Vernon/Plankinton turnovers with 25 of those on steals.  Tri-Valley was just 34% (28-82) from the field, 17% (5-30) from three-point area, and 41% (13-32) from the free-throw line, but the relentless full court pressure defense helped them get the victory.

The Titans led at the end of the first quarter by a score of 22-16.  They then started the second quarter on a 5-0 run and led 27-16.  The Mustangs were only able to cut the lead down by one by halftime and trailed 38-28.  Tri-Valley was able to get within four points by the end of the third quarter at 52-48, but Mt Vernon/Plankinton started the fourth quarter on another 5-0 run to lead 57-48 with 7:00 to play in regulation.

Tri-Valley led 63-62 with 1:30 to go, but the Titans got the next three points to go ahead 65-63.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton beat the full court pressure in the final seconds, but missed two layups.  Tyler Johnson got the defensive rebound and the ball got into Kienast’s hands for the game-tying layup with :02 to play.

The Titans again got out in front early in the overtime period.  They scored the first five points for a 70-65 lead with 2:15 to play.  Each team made a free-throw, and the score was 71-66 in favor of the Titans with 1:58 left in the game.  The Mustangs got the go-ahead three-point shot by Lance DeWitt in the middle of the 8-0 run to end the game.

Riley Haynes had 25 points, six rebounds, and six steals.  Kienast had 17 points and eight steals.  Johnson also had 11 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Nick Haas had seven points and six steals.  Owen Besmer had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Both the girls and boys will play Tea on Tuesday, January 12th, but at different locations.  The girls (4-3) will play in Tea, while the boys (3-3) will host Tea Area.

Trojan Girls Win Second Straight at Home

In a very physical game, the West Central Trojan girls defeated the Tea Area Titans on Thursday, January 7th by a score of 71-56.  It was the second straight win and fifth overall this season at home.

The game was close and back-and-forth through the first three quarters of play.  The two teams ended the first quarter tied 15-15.  The Trojans were able to take a one-point lead into halftime, 27-26.  West Central built on their slim lead in the third quarter and took a 46-43 into the final quarter.

The Trojans opened the quarter on a 9-0 run to go ahead 55-43 with 5:45 to play.  They continued to pull away from the Titans outscoring them 25-13 for the victory.

West Central finished the game shooting 50% (24-48) from the field, 54% (7-13) from three-point area, and 73% (16-22) from the free-throw line.  The Trojans out-rebounded the Titans 33-27 in the game.

Three players finished in double figures.  Cassidy Siemonsma had 22 points and nine rebounds.  Molli Thornton had 19 points, three steals, and two assists.  Rylee Haldeman finished with 10 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and four steals.  Josslin Jarding had eight points, and Addy Kramer had six points and eight rebounds.

West Central (6-1) will host Dakota Valley on Tuesday, January 12th.

Dell Rapids Chamber Hosting 2nd Annual “Battle of the Buns”

The Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2nd Annual “Battle of the Buns” throughout the month of January.  All four businesses that participated in the event last year, Pinz, Papa’s, Norby’s, and County Fair, are participating again this year with new menu items to determine the 2021 Best Burger in Dells!

Everyone is invited to purchase the battle burgers from the four locations, complete a ballot, and return it to one of the four locations.  A ballot will be given for every burger purchase, meaning multiple votes are possible.

The Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce will hold a weekly drawing from the returned ballots.  Chances to win can be doubled by sharing photos of the battle burgers on the chamber’s Facebook page or emailing them to office@ dellrapidschamber.com.

The contest will be held throughout the entire month of January, and the winner of the “Battle of the Buns” will be announced at the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet that will be held on February 21st.  Gronli Cabinetry will be sponsoring the award with a personalized cutting board.

The 2021 burger lineup:

PINZ offers the Cheez-Fection, a 1/2 pound 100% all beef patty, seasoned and grilled to perfection. Layered with Swiss, American, & Cheddar Cheese. This cheesy delight becomes complete by being served on a toasted pretzel bun, deluxe style with PINZ new secret sauce. This burger is sheer Cheez-Fection. Served with fries for $10.50

Papa’s Pub & Eatery offers the Papa’s Italiano, which features Papa’s 1/2 pound patty with one of their fried house-made mozzarella medallions and a house-made Rosa sauce. Served with fries for $10

Norby’s offers the Zesty Mexy De Gallo, a 1/3 lb beef – spiced up with their special seasoning, Mexican cheese & jalapeno – pattied to perfection. Served on toasted brioche bun with Norby’s special sauce & salsa! Served with Spicy Fries for $8.99

County Fair Grocery & Deli offers the Bodacious Bacon PB&J, this hamburger patty features peppered bacon, special seasoning, peanut butter and grape jelly all on a burger bun! Served with cheese balls and drink for $7.77
