Quarrier Wrestling Wins Three in Garretson

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team had three duals in Garretson on Tuesday, February 9th, and Dell Rapids won all three of them.

The Quarriers defeated Garretson 63-18, beat Lennox 44-21, and then defeated Sioux Falls O’Gorman 48-36.

Weston Mason (3-0), Mitchell Klinkenborg (2-0, 1 forfeit), Andrew Weiland (1-0, 2 forfeits), Jacob Vogel (1-0, 2 forfeits), and Brayden Gee (1-0, 2 forfeits) all had three wins

Zach Mckee (2-0), Gabe Clark (2-1), John Mortrude (0-1, 2 forfeits), Canyon Lowman (1-0, 1 forfeit), and Quinn Carr (0-1, 2 forfeits) all had two wins added to their records.

Dell Rapids will finish their regular season with a tournament in Huron on Saturday, February 13th.

Third Quarrier Rally Lifts Quarriers over Titans

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys outscored the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans 27-13 in the third quarter to help them to a 82-55 win at home on Tuesday, February 9th.

Dell Rapids had a scoring advantage in every quarter, but the difference in third quarter was the big difference in the game.  The Quarriers led 17-12 at the end of the quarter and only led by six points, 33-27, at halftime.

The Quarriers pushed the lead to 10 points at 44-34 with 3:30 to play in the third quarter, and then went on a 9-0 run.  Dell Rapids eventually ended the third quarter ahead by 20 points, 60-40.  The Quarriers outscored the Titans 22-15 in the final quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 55% (35-64) from the field, 38% (8-21) from three-point area, and 40% (4-10) from the free-throw line.

Five players finished in double figures in scoring.  Connor Rentz had 18 points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Brayden Pankonen also had 18 points, three rebounds, two steals, and two assists.   Colin Rentz finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.  Carter Nelson had 14 points and five rebounds.  Landon Ruesink added 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Coby Maeschen had five points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Titans Third Quarter Sinks Quarrier Girls

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls fell victim to a big third quarter by the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 9th.  The Titans defeated the Quarriers 61-34.

The game was much closer than the score might indicate for three of the four quarters.  The game was tied 7-7 with 2:22 to play in the first quarter.  The Titans had a four-point lead by the end of the quarter, 16-12.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton extended their lead to eight points at 27-19 by halftime.

The third quarter is where the Titans ran away with the game.  They outscored the Quarriers 26-7 for a 53-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The two teams both scored eight points each in the fourth quarter.

Dell Rapids shot 23% (12-53) from the field, 16% (4-25) from the three-point area, and  67% (6-9) from the free-throw line.  The Titans shot 51% (25-49) from the field.

Zoey Hilmoe had eight points and four rebounds.  Maggie Schmidt had seven points and three rebounds.  Jayme Schmidt and Liz Price both had five points each.  Haileigh Barnhart added three points and six rebounds.

The Lady Quarriers girls basketball C team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday afternoon to the Mt Vernon/Plankinton girls C team by a score of 25-28.

Trojan Girls Win Final Road Game of Season in Tough Battle

A three-pointer by Cambell Fischer and four made free-throws in the final minute helped the West Central Trojans win their final regular season road game of the season against the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars 60-55 on Tuesday, February 9th.

The Cougars had the lead for the first quarter and led 13-12 after the first period.  The two teams battle back-and-forth in the second quarter, and the first half ended in a 26-26 tie.

The Trojans were able to get a little separation in the third quarter.  West Central took a five-point lead, 40-35, into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans led 42-40 with 6:00 to play.  They then went on a 5-0 run for a 47-42 lead.  McCook Central/Montrose went on a 5-0 run of their own, and West Central led 47-45 with 3:05 to play.  The Trojans were able to respond with every basket the Cougars made down the stretch and then were able to put the game away in the final seconds from the free-throw line.

West Central finished the game shooting 37% (22-60) from the field, 30% (6-20) from three-point area, and 83% (10-12) from the free-throw line.  They finished with 31 team rebounds, 12 assists, and only turned the ball over eight times.

Cassidy Siemonsma had 16 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Rylee Haldeman had 12 points, five assists, and two steals.  Addy Kramer had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Josslin Jarding added eight points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

West Central (15-2) will host St Thomas More on Saturday, February 13th in their first of three straight home games to finish the regular season.

West Central Boys Get Dak-12 Road Win

The West Central Trojan boys got a Dak-12 road win against the Madison Bulldogs, 58-49, on Tuesday, February 8th.

Madison scored the first six points of the game and led 6-0 with 5:13 to play.  West Central then held them to just two points the remainder of the quarter and led 12-8 at the break.  The Trojans extended their lead to six points, 28-22, by halftime.

The Bulldogs got on a run in the third quarter and took a 37-36 lead with 2:30 to play in the third quarter.  Madison continued to lead at the end of the third quarter, 41-39.  The two teams went back-and-forth to start the fourth quarter, and Madison led 50-48 with 4:17 to play.  The Trojans then went on an 8-1 run the remainder of the game to get the come-from-behind win.

Three players finished in double figures.  Wilson Droge had 16 points and three rebounds.  Derek Eidsness had 15 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  Kasan Abedi finished with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.

The Trojans (9-6) will host Canton on Tuesday, February 16th.

Mustang Girls Fall to Sioux Falls Christian

The Tri-Valley Mustangs fell to the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on the road, 69-47, on Tuesday, February 9th.

The Mustangs held a lead on the #2 Chargers throughout the first quarter and into the second, but the Chargers got their offense going in the middle of the second quarter.  Tri-Valley got off to a 6-0 start and led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter.  They pushed their lead back to six points at 19-13 with 6:45 to play in the first half, but the Chargers outscored the Mustangs 23-6 from that point for a 36-25 halftime lead.

The Chargers continued to pull away from the Mustangs throughout the second half.  They led 49-33 at the end of the third quarter and then outscored Tri-Valley 20-14 in the final quarter.

Tri-Valley (8-8) will travel to Milbank on Saturday, February 13th.

Cardinal Girls Win on Back-to-Back Nights in Exciting Finishes

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team has provided plenty of excitement in their last two games.  St Mary defeated Arlington in the final seconds on Monday, February 8th, and then followed that with an overtime win against Baltic on Tuesday, February 9th.

St Mary traveled to Arlington to play the Cardinals and got locked into a close battle.  Arlington led at the first three quarter breaks, but never by more than four points.  Arlington led by three points at the end of the first quarter 12-9.  The lead for Arlington was only two points at 21-19 at halftime.  They were able to increase the lead to four points by the end of the third quarter at 33-29.  St Mary was able to take advantage of Arlington’s struggle on the offensive end in the fourth quarter.  Arlington went 2-13 in the fourth quarter, scoring only six points, allowing St Mary to take the lead.

Ella Heinitz made a three-pointer to give St Mary a 35-33 lead.  Ella Griffin followed with another three-pointer to give St Mary a 38-33 lead.  Arlington came back to tie the game 39-39.  The score remained tied 39-39 with :11 to go.  St Mary inbounded in front of their bench, and Heinitz took the inbound pass and drove to the hoop making a layup while being fouled with :08 on the clock.  She made the free-throw to give St Mary a 42-39 lead.  Madala Hanson got a steal in the back court to secure the win for St Mary.

St Mary finished the game shooting just 29% (15-51) from the field, 25% (4-16) from three-point area, and 73% (8-11) from the free-throw line.  They had 36 team rebounds, 11 steals, and 10 assists.

Heinitz finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists.  Karlie Klein had eight points and seven rebounds.  Griffin finished with six points, seven rebounds, and two assists.  Hanson also had six points, three steals, and three assists.

The Cardinals followed that performance with a 69-62 overtime win over the Baltic Bulldogs.  This was another back-and-forth game with neither team able to take a large lead.

For the first two quarters of play, the two teams played even.  The score was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter and then again 29-29 at halftime.  The Cardinals seemed to be gaining momentum in the third quarter and took a 47-42 lead into the fourth quarter.  The lead grew to a game-high eight points, 58-50, after a layup by K. Klein with 3:30 to play.  That was the final basket for St Mary in regulation.  Baltic cut the lead to 58-55 with seconds to go.  After a missed one-and-one by St Mary, the Bulldogs got the ball back with :10 to go.  After a timeout with :05.5, Berklee Erickson made a game-tying three-point shot at the buzzer to force overtime.

Baltic had two small leads early in overtime at 59-58 and 61-60.  After a 62-62 tie with 1:10 to go, Griffin made a three-pointer from the right wing with under a minute to play for a 65-62 St Mary lead.  Heinitz made two free-throws with with :18 to play to give the Cardinals a 67-62 win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 43%.  They were 10-19 on three-point shots and 11-16 from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 20 points off of Baltic turnovers.

Heinitz had 24 points, five rebounds, five steals, and four assists.  Griffin had 12 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  K. Klein finished with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Sydney Klein had seven points, and Hanson finished with seven points and two assists.

Tri-Valley Boys Win at Home over Lennox

The Tri-Valley Mustangs earned a 47-39 home win over the Lennox Orioles on Monday, February 8th.  The win stopped a two-game skid for the Mustangs.

Tri-Valley was able to overcome a tough third-quarter for the win.  The Mustangs held a four-point lead at 14-10 after the first quarter.  They were able to double the lead to eight points at 29-21 by halftime.  Tri-Valley was held to just three points in the third quarter, and Lennox pulled within a point at 32-31 heading into the final quarter.  The Mustangs were able to regroup and outscored Lennox 15-8 in the final quarter for the eight-point win.

Two players finished in double figures for the Mustangs.  Riley Haynes had a team-high 17 points.  Tyler Johnson finished with 13 points.

Tri-Valley (7-8) will travel to Milbank on Saturday, February 13th.

Cardinal Boys Win Eighth Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys won their eighth straight game after a 79-41 victory over the Arlington Cardinals in Arlington on Monday, February 8th.

Arlington held a six-point lead in the first two minutes of the game, but that lead was short lived.  St Mary ended the first quarter leading 23-13 and continued to add to the lead at the end of each quarter.  The lead grew to 39-24 by halftime.  St Mary put the game out of reach in the third quarter.  They outscored Arlington 26-11 for a 65-35 lead after three quarters of play.

St Mary shot 54% (30-56) from the field, 45% (9-20) from three-point area, and 91% (10-11) from the free-throw line.  St Mary out-rebounded Arlington 37-28 and forced 17 Arlington turnovers while only committing eight themselves.

Three players had double-figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis had 24 points, four steals, two rebounds, and two assists.  Sam Palmer finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals.  Ty Brown had 11 points and two rebounds.  Max Herber added eight points and five rebounds, and Ashaun Roach-Valandra had six points and four rebounds.

Mustang Wrestling Places Fifth in Redfield

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team participated in the Redfield Invitational on Saturday, February 6th.  The Mustangs finished fifth with a total of 89.5 points.  Redfield Area was first with 231.5 points.  Madison placed second with 142.5 points, and Burke/Gregory was third with 140.0 points.

Landon Reiser and Isaac Nehlich both had 2nd place finishes.  Brody Dybvig, Tyler Groenewold, and Ethan Nehlich all placed 3rd in their respective weight classes.  Porter Jensen and Alex Andresen both had 4th place finishes.

Tri-Valley will host Flandreau, Garretson, and Kingsbury County on Friday, February 12th.
