PBR Opens Cornbelt Season with Two Wins

The Cornbelt League amateur baseball season got underway on Sunday, June 7th for this year.  Dell Rapids PBR played two league games during the week and won both of them to start the league season at 2-0.

On Sunday, June 7th, PBR hosted the Canova Gang at Rickeman Field.  PBR scored the first six runs and went on to get the win 6-1.

Aaron Hansen got the scoring started in the bottom of the third with a one-out, two-run triple.  Weston Hanson followed with an RBI single to give PBR a 3-0 lead.  PBR got another run in the bottom of the fourth on a Canova error to push the lead to 4-0.  Matt Gillogly added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-0 lead.  Canova scored their run on a bases-loaded walk in top of the eight inning.

Gillogly had three hits and two RBI.  Riley Hoffman also had three hits.  Tanner Solberg finished with two hits.  A. Hansen had a hit with two RBI, and W. Hanson had a hit with an RBI.  Hoffman pitched the first seven innings to earn the win.  He gave up no runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  Tanner Olmstead pitched an inning giving up an unearned run on three walks and a strikeout.  Brett Mogen pitched the final inning striking out two batters.

PBR continued league play on Thursday, June 11th as they hosted the Colman A’s.  A three-run first inning is all PBR needed for a 3-0 victory to move to 2-0 in league play.

Solberg drove a triple to center field scoring Hoffman.  Gillogly followed that with his second home run of the week.  Gillogly hit a two-run home run to right field to give PBR the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. 

Mogen pitched a complete-game gem giving up just four hits while striking out 17 Colman A’s batters.

Gillogly, W. Hanson, Beau Behrend, and Nate McKee all had two hits in the game.  Hoffman and Solberg both finished with a hit.

PBR (3-0) will travel to Flandreau on Sunday, June 14th.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Dell Rapids Legion Adds Another Road Win

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team took to the road for the second game in a row on Wednesday, June 10th.  They traveled to Beresford for the second game of a double-header after the 15/16 teener game.

Beresford scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a Dell Rapids error for an early 1-0 lead.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI single by Logan Ellingson scoring Kaeden Eastman.  Dell Rapids took the lead for good in the top of the third inning.  Logan Stone hit an RBI single scoring Landon Ruesink.  Stone later scored on an RBI groundout by Noah Swartwout.  Drew Van Regenmorter added an RBI single scoring Brandon Geraets for a 4-1 lead.  Beresford cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth inning after scoring two runs to make the score 4-3.  The score remained 4-3 until the top of the seventh.  Dell Rapids added three more runs on an RBI walk to Swartwout, an RBI walk to Ty Wood, and Eastman scoring on an wild pitch.  Dell Rapids held Beresford scoreless in the seventh for the 7-3 victory.

Logan Stone finished with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.  Geraets also had two hits and two runs scored.  Ellingson also collected two hits and an RBI.  Van Regenmorter and Wood both had a hit and RBI.  Jake Steineke also had a hit.

Stone also pitched five innings in a great game on the mound to earn the win.  He gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Steineke pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit and striking out three.

Dell Rapids (2-1) travels to Vermillion on Monday, June 15th for their next game.

15/16 Teeners Open Season with Road Win

Having to wait an extra day to start their season due to a weather cancellation, the Dell Rapids 15/16 teener team played their first game of the season on the road in Beresford on Wednesday, June 10th.  Dell Rapids wasted no time scoring runs on their way to an 11-6 victory.

Dell Rapids scored a run in each of the first two innings and then scored four times in the top of the third innings for an early 6-0 lead.  Beresford got on the board in the bottom of the third, but was limited to just one run as Dell Rapids lead 6-1 after three innings of play.  Dell Rapids added two more runs after CJ Smith and Joe Rechtenbaugh scored in the top of the fourth inning.  Beresford made a rally in the bottom of the inning scoring four times to pull within three at 8-5.  Dell Rapids would again add two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to push the lead back to five at 10-5.  Each team added another run in the sixth inning as Dell Rapids held on for the win.

Brayden Pankonen finished the game with three hits and two runs scored.  CJ Smith finished with two hits.  Caleb Kittleson had a double.  Landon Ruesink, Aiden Boechler, and Dylan Mathis all had hits in the game as well.

Ruesink pitched the first 2 1/3 innings giving up one unearned run on no hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  Smith pitched one inning giving up four runs, all earned, on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Pankonen pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up no runs on one hit while striking out two.  Brady Larson pitched the final two innings giving up an earned run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will host Chancellor on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then host Vermillion in two games on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.  All three games will be at Rickeman Field.

Late Rally Gives Dell Rapids Legion Victory

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team scored eight times in the final two innings for a 12-10 come-from-behind win against Colton on Friday, June 5th in Colton.

It was another rough start for Dell Rapids.  Colton took advantage of six Dell Rapids errors in the first three innings, scoring seven runs, only one of which was earned, for an early 7-0 lead after three innings of play.  Dell Rapids was able to scratch across a couple of runs in the top of the fourth on a couple of miscues by Colton.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Noah Swartwout scored on a balk, and Mason Goeken scored moments later on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 7-2.  Colton got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a passed ball to lead 8-2 after four innings.

Dell Rapids added two more runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Kaeden Eastman and Swartwout to cut the lead to 8-4.  Colton again answered with a two-run inside-the-park homerun by M. Mathieu to push the lead back to six at 10-4 after five innings of play.

Dell Rapids then took advantage of some defensive errors by Colton to swing the game in their favor.  With two on base and two out in the top of the sixth inning, Dell Rapids scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Logan Stone had an RBI single.  Brandon Geraets followed with a two-run double.  Jake Steineke and Eastman both walked to load the bases before Swartwout hit a two-run single to left to cut the lead to 10-9.  After a 1-2-3 defensive inning for Dell Rapids, they kept the offensive momentum going in the top of the seventh.  Ty Wood opened the inning with a walk.  Drew Van Regenmorter followed with an RBI triple.  Landon Ruesink drove home Van Regenmorter with a double to left field.  Ruesink would score the third run of the inning on an error to give Dell Rapids a 12-10 lead.  The defense again retired Colton in order to get the come-from-behind win.

Swartwout finished the game 2-4 with three RBIs.  Van Regenmorter also had two hits and an RBI.  Geraets finished with a hit and three RBIs.  Ruesink, Stone, and Eastman all had a hit and RBI.  Wood starting the game on the mound for Dell Rapids pitching 2 1/3 innings giving up seven runs, one earned, on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.  Swartwout got the win pitching the final 4 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Dell Rapids (1-1) will travel to Beresford on Wednesday, June 10th.  First pitch is scheduled for about 7:30 p.m.   The legion game will be played after a 15/16 Teener game, which is also Dell Rapids at Beresford.

Dell Rapids Legion Takes Loss to Open Season

After nearly three months of no live sports for high school aged kids, the Dell Rapids Legion baseball team was able to step foot on the field on Wednesday, June 3rd.  Dell Rapids hosted Madison at Rickeman to start the 2020 baseball season.  Unfortunately for Dell Rapids, Madison took the win 19-3 in seven innings.

Madison scored the first nine runs in the game taking advantage of Dell Rapids miscues in the field.  Madison scored three runs in the first, four runs in the second, and two more in top of the third for a 9-0 lead.  Dell Rapids was able to get two runs across the plate in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Brandon Geraets and and RBI triple by Jake Steineke.  Logan Stone added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Madison lead down to 9-3, but Madison scored 10 more times in the next two innings, three in the sixth and seven in the seventh, to end the game at 19-3.

Stone had two hits and an RBI.  Steineke had one hit and an RBI.  Geraets had a hit and an RBI, and Landon Ruesink and Kaeden Eastman both had hits in the game as well.  Steinke started the game on the mound for Dell Rapids pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up six runs, two earned, on one with with three walks and four strikeouts.  Stone pitched the next 4 1/3 innings giving up six runs, three earned, on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.  Geraets pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing four runs, three earned on one hit and three walks.  Eastman finished the game pitching an inning giving up three runs, one earned, on one hit with two walks and a strikeout.

Dell Rapids (0-1) will travel to Colton on Friday, June 5th for a 7:00 p.m. game.

Postponed Events and Spring Sports Seasons Officially Cancelled in South Dakota

With the Governor’s announcement of in-person school closure for the remainder of the school year, all remaining SDHSAA events for 2019-20, to include all spring activities and all postponed winter events, are cancelled. This is an unprecedented time across our state and country, and we do not make this decision lightly. We thank all of the participants, their coaches/directors/advisors/administration, their parents, and everyone else who has dedicated tremendous amounts of time, passion, and effort to these events. To our senior participants- we thank you for everything you have done for your schools and communities and wish you the very best in your bright futures. This is difficult, but the lessons you’ve learned and friendships you’ve made through high school activities will last your lifetime. The cancellation will be formalized at the April 21st Regular Meeting of the SDHSAA Board of Directors. We look forward to the resumption of high school activities during the 2020-21 school year, and will continue work on those events at this time. The SDHSAA thanks everyone involved for their patience and understanding throughout this process.

Five Quarriers Earn DakXII Honors for Season

Five Dell Rapids Quarrier basketball players, four boys players and one girls players, earned 2019-2020 Dak12 honors for their play this season.

Senior Aspen Hansen was a 2nd Team All-Dak12 selection.  Senior Drew Van Regenmorter was a 1st Team All-Dak12selection.  Junior Colin Rentz earned 2nd Team honors.  Seniors Logan Ellingson and Ramsey Heinecke were honorable mentions.

The girls team finished the regular season with a 2-19 overall record.  The boys team finished finished the regular season a 16-4 record, qualified for the SoDak16, and also qualified for the Class A State Tournament.

Quarrier Boys Heading Back to State Tournament

Despite having only two made field goals in the last 12 minutes of the game, the Dell Rapids Quarriers held off the Vermillion Tanagers for a 52-45 win in the SoDak 16 on Tuesday, March 10th at the Sanford Pentagon.  The win gives the Quarriers a birth into the boys 2020 South Dakota Class A State Tournament March 19th – 21st in Rapid City.

It was Vermillion who held an early three-point lead at 5-2 with 5:48 in the first quarter after a made basket by Noah Gilbertson.  Dell Rapids scored the next five points to take a 7-5 lead.  The Tanagers responded with a 4-0 run for a 9-7 lead with 2:03 to play.  That was the last lead of the game for Vermillion.  Drew Van Regenmorter knocked down a three point shot moments later, and Dell Rapids ended the first quarter leading 10-9.  The Quarriers got into an offensive groove early in the second quarter by going on an 8-2 run.  Logan Ellingson made two free throws with 5:07 to play to extend the Quarrier lead to 18-11.  The lead grew to 11 after a made basket by Coby Maeschen with 1:41 to go in the half.  The Quarriers led 25-14 at that point and led 28-20 at halftime.

Dell Rapids was able to maintain a lead of seven points or more throughout the third quarter.  In fact the lead grew to 12 points after a made three-point shot with Van Regenmorter with 4:07 to play in the quarter and two made free throws by Landon Ruesink with 3:51 to go.  Both teams then went cold.  Neither team made another point over the last 3:51 of the third quarter, and Dell Rapids held a 40-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Van Regenmorter pushed the Quarrier lead to a game-high 14 points with 7:15 to play in the game after a pair of made free throws.  Vermillion then put together a comeback bid.  The Tanagers went on a 15-2 run over the next four plus minutes to pull within a point at 44-43 with 3:31 to go.  Van Regenmorter gave the Quarriers their first made field goal in nine minutes with 3:09 to play to push the Dell Rapids lead to 46-43.  Dell Rapids was able to knock down three more free throws over the next couple of minutes to make the score 49-45 with :29 to play.  After a missed free throw by Vermillion and an offensive rebound, Maeschen made a key block and rebound which led to a fast break basket by Connor Rentz with :19 to play to seal the victory for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 45% (17-38) from the field, 27% (4-15) from three-point area, and 64% (14-22) from the free-throw line.  They had 31 total rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Three players finished in double figures.  Van Regenmorter finished with a game-high 13 points along with nine rebounds and four assists.  Ruesink had 12 points off the bench.  Colin Rentz had 11 points and five rebounds.

The Quarriers will enter the state tournament has the #7 seed.  Their first game will be against #2 Sioux Valley on Thursday, March 19th.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ct / 3:00 p.m. mt in the Ice Arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

Five Cardinals Earn DVC Honors this Year

Five Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal basketball players, three boys players and two girls players, earned 2019-2020 Dakota Valley Conference honors for their play this season.

Junior Ella Heinitz was a 1st Team All-DVC selection.  Sophomore Courtney Brown earned an Honorable Mention.  Junior Connor Libis was also a 1st Team All-DVC selection.  Junior Max Herber was a 2nd Team All-DVC pick, and Senior Weston Geraets received Honorable Mention honors.

The girls team finished sixth in the regular season standings with a 4-4 conference record and 10-10 overall record.  The girls finished 4th in the DVC Tournament.  The boys team finished third in the regular season standings with a 6-2 conference record and 15-5 overall record.  The boys won the DVC Tournament this year.

Quarrier Boys Going Back to SoDak 16

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team will make another trip to the Class A SoDak 16 after a Region 3A win over the West Central Trojans on Friday, March 6th.  The Quarriers won the game 64-50 which was held at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.

West Central held the lead for the early part of the ball game and led 11-7 with 3:30 to go in the quarter.  Dell Rapids closed out the first quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 20-15 lead heading into the second quarter.  That lead grew to 31-20 with 2:20 to play in the first half.  The Trojans then went on an 8-0 run to finish the half to cut the Dell Rapids lead down to 31-28 at halftime.

The Trojans then scored the first basket of the third quarter to extend the run to 10-0 and pull within a point at 31-30.  The Quarrier defense then held the Trojans to just four more third quarter points and ended the third quarter leading 45-34.  Dell Rapids was able to maintain their lead throughout the fourth quarter to get the victory.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 48% (24-50) from the field, 21% (4-19) from three-point area, and 57% (12-21) from the free-throw line. 

Three players finished in double figures.  Logan Ellingson led the team with 21 points and three rebounds.  Ramsey Heinecke had 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Colin Rentz had 10 points along with five rebounds, and five assists.

The Quarriers (17-4) will play the Vermillion Tanagers on Tuesday, March 10th at the Sioux Falls Pentagon with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.  The winner of the game will advance to the South Dakota State Class A Boys Basketball Tournament.  Big Sioux Media has plans of streaming the SoDak 16 game on Tuesday.
