West Central Takes Doubleheader over Titans

The West Central Trojan girls and boys basketball teams won a doubleheader against the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans at home on Tuesday, December 14th.  The girls team won 51-42, and the boys team won 72-58.

West Central 51, Mt Vernon/Plankinton 42 – Girls

The Trojan girls built a 35-16 lead late in the third quarter only to see the Titans nearly make a complete comeback.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton held a 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Trojan defense locked down the Titans in the second quarter.  West Central outscored the Titans 18-4 in the second quarter for a 23-10 halftime lead.

That lead grew to 35-16 with 2:06 to play in the third quarter.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton then ended the third quarter on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 35-26.  The Titans then scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, and the Trojan lead was only 35-29 with 6:40 to go in the game.  The offense found their groove at that point and scored 16 points the rest of the game to hang on for a 51-42 win.

West Central shot 31% (16-51) from the field and 33% (9-27) from three-point area.  The Trojans were also 63% (10-16) from the free throw line.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton finished the game shooting 39% (16-41) from the field, 29% (5-17) from three-point area, and 45% (5-11) from three free-throw line.

Rylee Haldeman had 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Tabor Teel added 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Addy Kramer finished with nine points and four rebounds.  Josslin Jarding had seven points and six rebounds, and Cambell Fischer had five points and six rebounds.

The Trojans (2-0) will play in Winner on Friday, December 17th.

West Central 72, Mt Vernon-Plankinton 58 – Boys

The Trojans and Titans had a very physical boys game, but the Trojans were able to pull away in the second half.  West Central led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, however, the Titans had the lead at halftime.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton took advantage of 16 trips to the free-throw line in the second quarter to take a 30-28 lead at the half.

West Central’s defense stepped up the intensity in the third quarter.  The Trojans forced 12 turnovers alone in the third quarter as West Central regained the lead.  The Trojans led 49-43 heading into the final quarter.  West Central continued to slowly pull away in the fourth quarter for the 72-58 win.

The Trojans shot 38% (22-58) from the field, 50% (13-26) from three-point area, and 79% (15-19) from the free-throw line.  The Titans were 51% (19-37) from the field, but 36% (5-14) from three-point area and 60% (15-25) from the free-throw line.  The Titans also turned the ball over 25 times in the game.

Grafton Stroup had 26 points and four rebounds.  Dillon Jackson finished with 13 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and three steals.  Jacob Krempges added 10 points, three rebounds, and three steals.

West Central (2-0) will travel to Winner on Friday, December 17th.

Cardinal Boys Grind out Win Against Golden Eagles

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team had to grind out a win on Tuesday, December 14th.  After scoring 15 points in the opening quarter, St Mary went home with a 41-34 win over the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles.

The Cardinals got out to an early 9-2 lead with 5:30 to go in the opening quarter.  The lead grew to 15-4 with 3:00 left in the quarter, and the Cardinals led 15-7 at the quarter break.  The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 15-12 with 5:00 left in the half.  St Mary outscored Mitchell Christian 8-2 the rest of the quarter for a 23-14 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles again got within four points early in the third quarter.  St Mary led 23-19 with 5:15 to play in the third quarter and held Mitchell Christian to just one point the rest of the quarter.  The Cardinals led 27-20 heading into the final quarter.  St Mary then scored eight quick points for a 35-20 advantage with 6:30 left in the game.  The Golden Eagles tried to get a comeback going, but the Cardinals held them for a 41-34 victory.

St Mary shot 32% (15-47) from the field, but just 15% (3-20) from three-point area.  They were 8-12 from the free-throw line.  Mitchell Christian finished the game shooting 30% (11-37) from the field and 32% (6-19) from three-point area, but only 50% (6-12) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Dylan Mathis had 12 points four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  CJ Smith also had 12 points along with one rebound and one steal.  John Pica had 10 points and five rebounds.  Nic Gaspar had four points and four steals.  Gabe Lindeman had three points and six rebounds.  Ty Brown finished with four rebounds and four assists.

The Cardinals (1-0) will be at Colman-Egan on Friday, December 17th for their next game.

Cardinal Girls Dominate in Season Opening Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team had to wait four extra days to start their 2021-2022 season, and when they finally got to play, they were firing on all cylinders.  The Cardinals dominated just about every phase of the game in a 65-16 win over the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles on Tuesday, December 14th.

The Cardinals shot 50% (25-50) from the field in the game, had 19 team assists on 25 made shots, had 19 team steals, and only nine turnovers.  St Mary had every one of their players score in the game as well as have at least one rebound, steal, or assist.

St Mary raced out to a 30-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and then built a 49-13 lead by halftime.  The Cardinals held the Golden Eagles to only three points total in the second half to close out the game.

The Cardinals (1-0) will travel to Colman to play the Colman-Egan Hawks on Thursday, December 16th.

Charger Defense Smothers Quarriers

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team ran into a tough defense in Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, December 14th.  The Chargers held Dell Rapids to just single digit scoring in each quarter while forcing the Quarriers to shoot from the outside all night.

The Quarriers did score the first two points of the game, but the Chargers then went on a 10-0 run for a 10-2 lead with 2:00 minutes to go.  The first quarter ended with Sioux Falls Christian leading 17-6.  Dell Rapids was held to just six second quarter points as the Chargers pushed the lead to 32-12 at halftime.

Sioux Falls Christian kept adding to their lead in each quarter in the second half as well.  They outscored Dell Rapids 15-8 in the third quarter and 9-8 in the fourth quarter for a 56-28 victory.

Dell Rapids was held to just 28% (11-39) from the field.  They were 8-18 from two-point range, but only 3-21 on three-point attempts.  The Quarriers were also 3-9 from the free-throw line.  The Charger defense forced 16 turnovers on 12 steals in the game.

Mady VanOverbeke had seven points.  Claire Wynja finished with five points and two rebounds.  Haileigh Barnhart had four points, six rebounds, and two steals.  Maggie Schmidt also had four points and five rebounds.  Jayme Schmidt added four points and two rebounds, and Liz Prize also ended with four points.

Dell Rapids (0-2) will host Tea in the first home game of the season on Friday, December 17th.

JV Results

The Quarrier JV basketball team was outscored 21-4 in the second quarter as the Sioux Falls Charger JV team rolled to a 45-18 victory.  The Chargers pressure defense kept Dell Rapids from generating any consistent offense the entire game. Clara Justice scored seven points, Elly Olson had five points and five steals, Kerrigan Kindopp recorded three points, two steals, and two assists.  Shelby Welbig had two points and six rebounds.

Quarrier Wrestling Drops Two in Lennox

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling traveled to Lennox for two duals on Tuesday, December 14th.  The Quarriers had a dual against both Lennox and Tea Area.  Dell Rapids lost to Lennox by just six points, 48-42.  Dell Rapids also lost to Tea Area 57-21.

Connor Hanson, Carson Roach, and Hunter Nelson earned pins in matches against Lennox.  John Mortrude, Mason Stubbe, Quinn Carr, and Aiden Geraets received forfeit wins.

Hanson got a major decision in a win against Tea.  Stubbe won by a technical fall.  Carr got a pin, and Nelson earned a forfeit win.

Dell Rapids will go to Hartford for two matches against Chamberlain and Sturgis on Friday, December 17th, and then will be in Madison for a tournament on Saturday, December 18th.

Quarrier Boys Slam Their Way to Victory over Baltic

After having their season-opening game postponed due to the snow storm, the Dell Rapids Quarriers electrified the crowd with four dunks and earned a 64-40 win over the Baltic Bulldogs in Baltic on Monday, December 13th.  Camden Justice and Jack Henry had back-to-back slams early in the first quarter to give Dell Rapids a 6-0 lead, and the Quarriers never looked back.  Shane Stone added two slams of his own in the second half.

Dell Rapids led 18-10 after the first quarter and pushed that lead to 20 points at 38-18 by halftime.  The lead grew to 27 points by the end of the third quarter, 54-27, as the Quarriers cruised in the second half for the season-opening win.

The Quarriers shot 46% (25-54) from the field in the game, but just 24% (5-21) from three-point area.  Dell Rapids was also 75% (9-12) from the free-throw line and out-rebounded Baltic 33-22.  The Quarrier defense forced 20 Bulldog turnovers.

Three players finished in double figures.  Brayden Pankonen had 21 points, six steals, four assists, and two rebounds.  Justice finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  Stone added 10 points and seven rebounds.  Aiden Boechler had five points and four rebounds, and Henry finished with four points and four rebounds.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will host Tea in a double-header on Friday, December 17th.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Late Rally Gives Mustang Boys Win over Sisseton

The Tri-Valley Mustangs rallied from a five-point deficit in the final three minutes of the game for a 52-49 win against Sisseton on Saturday, December 11th.

The Mustangs held the lead for all of the first half.  Tri-Valley built a seven-point lead at 17-10 after the first quarter.  Sisseton cut the lead down to four points, 26-22, by halftime.  Sisseton completed their comeback in the third quarter as the game was tied 36-36 going into the fourth quarter.  They then took the lead fifteen seconds into the fourth quarter.  Sisseton pushed their lead to 49-44 with 2:45 to go in the game, but the Mustangs scored the final eight points of the game for the win.

Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 34% (20-58) from the field and 26% (5-19) from the three-point area.  Sisseton shot 32% (20-62) from the field and 29% (9-31) from three-point area.  The Mustangs held a slim 39-31 rebounding edge, and both teams committed 20 turnovers.  The difference in the game was from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley was 7-17 from the free-throw line, while Sisseton never took a free throw.

Three players finished in double-figures for the Mustangs.  Noah Haynes had 15 points and seven rebounds.  Connor Christensn had 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Cory McDonald also had 10 points along with seven rebounds and five steals.  Lance DeWitt added seven points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Tri-Valley (1-0) will be in Madison to play against the Bulldogs on Tuesday, December 14th.

Mustang Girls Drop Season Opener to Sisseton

Sisseton missed all five of their three-point shots in the first quarter.  They missed just two more the rest of the game as the hot shooting from beyond the arc gave the Tri-Valley Mustangs a season-opening loss, 76-48, on Saturday, December 11th.

Tri-Valley held a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and then scored the first three points of the second quarter for a 13-9 advantage.  Sisseton then went on a 10-0 run and led 19-13 with 4:10 to go in the first half.  They would not look back as the lead grew to 33-18  by halftime.  Sisseton’s hot shooting continued into the third quarter as they went 7-8 on three points shots and built a 59-34 lead after the third quarter.

The Mustangs shot just 25% (15-59) from the field, 19% (5-27) from three-point area, and 57% (13-23) from the free-throw line.  Sisseton, meanwhile, shot 45% (25-56) from the field, 61% (11-18) from three-point area, and 65% (15-23) from the free-throw line.  Sisseton also out-rebounded Tri-Valley 47-29 in the game.

Paige Jewett finished with 23 points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs.  Lauren Grinde had seven points and four rebounds.  Madelyn Wenzel had five points, and Ava Pearson and Hillary Hastings both had four points each.

Tri-Valley (0-1) will travel to Madison on Tuesday, December 14th.

Trojan Boys Make Statement to Start Season

The West Central Trojan boys basketball team had to wait an extra day to start their 2021-2022 season, and the Trojans made a statement with an 85-74 win over #1 Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday, December 11th.

The Chargers got off to the quick start in the game.  Sioux Falls Christian led 10-2 with 3:50 to go in the opening quarter, but the Trojans caught fire at that point.  West Central closed out the quarter on a 19-9 run for a 21-19 lead.  The Trojans then started the second quarter on a 10-0 run.  That lead grew to 20 points by halftime, 51-31.

Sioux Falls Christian made a run in the second half.  The Chargers outscored West Central 23-15 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 66-54 heading into the final quarter.  The Chargers got the lead down to single digits at 66-58 with 7:26 to play, but West Central was able to maintain a 10-to-12 point lead the rest of the game for the 85-74 win.

West Central shot 55% (27-49) from the field, 40% (12-30) from three-point area, and 70% (19-27) from the free-throw line.  The Trojans also had 29 team rebounds and 16 team assists while only turning the ball over seven times.  The Chargers finished the game 43% (27-63) from the field, 24% (7-29) from three-point area, and 65% (13-20) from the free-throw line.

Five players finished in double figures for the Trojans.  Grafton Stroup had 25 points and three rebounds.  Jack Linneman had 13 points and three rebounds.  Mubarak Ibrahim also had 13 points.  Braden Dierickx had 12 points two rebounds, and three assists.  Dillon Jackson finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

West Central (1-0) will host the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Trojans on Tuesday, December 14th.
