Vermillion Pulls Away from Quarrier Girls

The Vermillion Tanagers slowly pulled away from the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, January 27th in Dell Rapids.  Vermillion slowly added to their lead almost every quarter in their 52-38 victory.

After Vermillion scored the first four points of the game, Dell Rapids went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-4 lead with 5:00 to go in the first quarter.  The Tanagers then went on a 10-4 run for a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Vermillion slowly built upon the lead in the second quarter and led 28-16 at halftime.  Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter, and Vermillion led 41-29 after three quarters of play.  The Tanagers outscored Dell Rapids 11-9 in the final quarter.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 32% (15-47), 20% (3-15) from three-point area, and 5-7 from the free-throw line.  The Tanagers were 42% (21-50) shooting, 24% (4-17) from three-point area, and 40% (6-15) from the free-throw line.

Haileigh Barnhart had eight points, three rebounds, three steals, and four assists.  Mady VanOverbeke finished with seven points, three rebounds, four steals, and three assists.  Liz Prize added six points and six rebounds.  Jenna Miller and Claire Wynja both had five points and three rebounds.

Dell Rapids will travel to Baltic on Monday, January 31st.

JV Results

Clara Justice’s two pressure packed free throws with no time on the clock completed an exciting Quarrier come-from-behind victory, 29-28, over the Vermillion JV team.  Miller had 10 points, five steals, and three rebounds.  Justice finished with six points and six rebounds.  Shelby Welbig had six points, 10 rebounds, and two steals.  Kerrigan Kindopp added four points, and Elly Olson had three points and three steals.

Cardinal Boys Too Strong for Cubs

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals were too strong for the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 27th.  The Cardinals had no trouble in a 63-30 win at home.

St Mary built a 20-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and continued to build the lead from there.  The Cardinals led 39-16 at halftime.  The Cubs were held to just two points by the Cardinal defense in the third quarter, and St Mary led 57-18 after three quarters of play.

The Cardinals were 43% (24-56) shooting in the game, 25% (5-20) from three-point area, and 59% (10-17) from the free-throw line.  The Cubs were just 27% (12-46) shooting, 18% (2-11) from three-point area, and 25% (4-16) from the free-throw line.  St Mary forced 21 turnovers, 14 of those on steals.

Nic Gaspar had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.  Gaspar also had three steals.  Ty Brown finished with 10 points, two steals, two assists, and a rebound.  Dylan Mathis had nine points, six rebound, and five steals.  John Pica also had nine points and six rebounds.

St Mary Girls End Skid with Home Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls ended a three-game losing streak with a 60-42 win over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs at home on Thursday, January 27th.

The two teams traded blows in the first two quarters.  The Cardinals delivered the first blow and built a 14-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The Cubs responded in the second quarter outscoring St Mary 17-10.  The Cardinals led 24-22 at halftime.

The Cardinal offense caught fire in the third quarter which put St Mary in control of the game.  St Mary scored 27 points in the third quarter alone and led 51-32 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cubs had a 10-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, but never threatened the Cardinal lead.

St Mary shot 39% (17-44) from the field, 44% (10-23) from three point area, and 79% (19-24) from the free-throw line.  The team had a total of 23 rebounds and 15 steals.

Ella Griffin finished with a team-high 18 points with four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.  Maya Heinitz had 10 points, four rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Whitney Warwick added nine points.  Madala Hanson ended with seven points, and Addy Gilbert had five points.

The Cardinals (8-6) will travel to Hills-Beaver Creek on Monday, January 31st.

Dell Rapids and St Mary Compete in One-Act Play Regions, Dell Rapids Qualifies for State

Both Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary performed at One-Act play regions recently.

Dell Rapids St Mary performed at the Region 3B competition on Tuesday, January 25th at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse in Madison.  Danika Deuter, Rebecca Heinemann, Rachel Heinemann, Addison Van’t Hof, Sophie Schwebach, and Kade Lutt received Outstanding Acting Awards.

Dell Rapids performed at the Region 3A competition on Wednesday, January 26th also at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse in Madison.  Dell Rapids earned a trip to the state competition for the first time in four years.  Cariss Montgomery, Josie Geraets, Noah Larson, Kate Golden, Rylee Rinehart, and Charlie Prasek all earned Outstanding Acting Awards.

In order to win an Outstanding Acting Award, at least two of the three judges must vote on an actor giving an outstanding performance.

Dell Rapids will perform at Rapid City Central High School at 3:45 p.m. ct / 2:45 p.m. mt on Friday, February 4th for the 2022 South Dakota State One-Act Competition.

Mustangs Split Doubleheader in Canton

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Canton for a doubleheader against the C-Hawks on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Mustang girls won 53-45, but the boys fell 39-67.

Tri-Valley 53, Canton 45 – Girls

The Mustangs had a second and third quarter rallies to give them a lead, and they were able to fend off a rally by Canton for the win.  Tri-Valley had a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the C-Hawks tied the game 14-14 midway through the second quarter.  The Mustangs then went on a 9-0 run to lead 23-14.  Canton responded with a 6-0 run to make the score 23-20 in favor of the Mustangs at halftime.

The C-Hawks continued the run into the third quarter to give them a 26-23 lead.  The Mustangs finished the quarter on an 11-0 run for a 34-26 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  Canton cut the lead to two points, 42-40, but Lauren Grinde made a three-pointer to end a 5-0 run to give the Mustangs a 47-40 lead.  Tri-Valley was able to hold off Canton the remainder of the game for the win.

Grinde had 20 points to lead Tri-Valley.  Paige Jewett had nine points.  Ava Pearson finished with eight points, and Madelyn Wenzel had seven points.

Canton 67, Tri-Valley 39 – Boys

Canton built a 17-point lead throughout the first half of the game.  The C-Hawks led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead to 35-18 at halftime.  The Mustangs made the first three-pointer of the third quarter to make the score 35-21, but Canton went on a 15-0 run from there to put the game out of reach.  Canton led 56-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Cory McDonald had 10 points.  Noah Haynes finished with seven points.  Owen Besmer had five points, and Connor Christensen added four points.  Riley Carlson, Carter Sorenson, and Trey Johnson all had three points each.

Tri-Valley will host Elk Point-Jefferson on Thursday, January 27th.

Mustang Wrestling Splits Duals at Home

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team hosted a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Mustangs had matches against Dell Rapids and Madison.

Tri-Valley defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 47-30.  Cody Lofswold (113-pound) and Landyn Reiser (145-pound) had pins. Mason Hendrixson (182-pound) and Luke Nehlich (220-pound) both had major decision wins.  Lawson Loiseau (138-pound) had an 8-5 decision win.  Cole Hendrixson (106-pound), Brody Dybvig (126-pound), Remington Ludens (132-pound), and Xavier Yount (170-pound) had wins by forfeit.

The Madison Bulldogs got a 56-22 win over the Mustangs.  C. Hendrixson (106-pound), Treyson Richter (113-pound), and M. Hendrixson (170-pound) had pins in the match.  Dybvig (126-pound) had a major decision win.

Tri-Valley will be at the Wagner Invite on Saturday, January 29th.

Trojans Sweep Doubleheader Against Vermillion

The West Central Trojan girls and boys basketball teams hosted the Vermillion Tanagers on Tuesday, January 25th.  Both the Trojan teams beat very good Vermillion teams.  The girls won 63-49, while the boys came from behind to win 62-58.

West Central 63, Vermillion 49 – Girls

The West Central Trojans used a fast start to get the win against the Tanagers.  The Trojans jumped out to a 12-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The lead grew to 20 points, 23-3, with 5:15 to play in the second quarter.  Vermillion rallied and cut the lead to 27-15 with 1:08 to go in the half.  West Central ended the quarter on a 5-0 run for a 32-15 halftime lead.

The Tanagers tried to cut into the lead throughout the second half, but every time they made a run, West Central had an answer.  The Trojans still led by 16 points, 45-29, heading into the fourth quarter.  Vermillion started the fourth by scoring the first three points.  They then got the lead down to single digits, 52-44, with 2:25 to go in the game.  West Central, however, shut down the rally and ended the game on an 11-5 run.

Rylee Haldeman had 28 points.  Grace Harden finishe with 15 points.  Addy Kramer added nine points, and Tabor Teel had five points.

West Central 62, Vermillion 58 – Boys

The Trojans went on a late rally in the fourth quarter to earn the victory over the Tanagers.  Most of the game was back-and-forth between the two teams.  Vermillion had a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-14.  West Central did take the lead in the second quarter, but the Tanagers still held the advantage at halftime, 35-33.

The Tanagers scored the first five points of the second half for a 40-33 lead with 6:30 to play in the third quarter.  West Central cut into the lead throughout the quarter, but Vermillion still held a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 49-46.  The Tanagers led 56-51 with 2:30 to go, and that’s when the Trojans made their move.  West Central went on a 6-0 run with the Grafton Stroup hitting a three pointer with :36 left in the game.  The Trojans were able to make their free throws in the closing seconds to get the win.

Dillon Jackson led West Central with 24 points.  Stroup ended with 13 points.  Jacob Krempges had eight points.  Carter Schmeichel finished with seven points, and Braden Dierickx had six points.

West Central Wrestling Wins Two More

The West Central Trojan wrestling team got two more dual wins on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Trojans had matches against Dell Rapids and Madison in a Dak-12 quadrangular held at Tri-Valley High School.

The Trojans defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 66-15.  Orlando Whiting (113-pound), Rayce Whiting (120-pound), Keaton Vessells (138-pound), Justin Zirpel (152-pound), Chet Carda (182-pound), Abram Maras (220-pound), and Gavin Pischke (285-pound) all had pins.  Karson Vessells (106-pound), Chandler Carda (126-pound), Jude Jarding (132-pound), and Cyrus Maras (170-pound) had wins by forfeit.

West Central also defeated the Madison Bullogs 48-27.  O. Whiting (113-pound), Cha. Carda (126-pound), Jarding (132-pound), Zirpel (152-pound), Gabe Gebhard (195-pound), and Pischke (285-pound) had pins.  Ka. Vessells (106-pound) had a win by forfeit.  Che. Carda (170-pound) had a win via injury time.

The Trojans will be at the Les Tlustos-Brookings Invitational in Brookings on Saturday, January 29th.

Quarrier Wrestling Falls in Two Duals at Tri-Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team traveled to Tri-Valley High School for a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Quarriers had dual matches against Tri-Valley and West Central.

The Tri-Valley Mustangs defeated the Quarriers 47-30.  Kane Murphy (120-pound), Hunter Nelson (152-pound), Weston Mason (160-pound), and Aiden Geraets (195-pound) all had pins in the match.  Jamison Rave earned a victory by forfeit.

The West Central Trojans beat Dell Rapids 66-15.  Gabe Clark (145-pound) and Geraets (195-pound) had pins in the match.  Mason (160-pound) had an 8-5 decision win.

Mason and Geraets were the two wrestlers that had two wins on the night.

Dell Rapids will be at the Les Tlustos-Brookings Invitational in Brookings on Saturday, January 29th.

Quarrier Boys Fend off Elks for Win

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys tried to put the game away in the third quarter, but the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks kept hanging close.  Dell Rapids was still able to get a 62-57 road win on Tuesday, January 25th.

Most of the game was close, and the first quarter was played to a 15-15 tie.  Dell Rapids held the first advantage at a quarter break when the lead 30-26 at halftime.  The Quarriers had a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but the Elks came back and made a layup at the end of the quarter to cut the lead to 43-38.  The Quarriers were able to keep a four-to-seven point lead throughout the fourth quarter as the two teams traded baskets through most of it.  In the closing seconds, the Quarriers were able to get a fast-break layup by Camden Justice as he was fouled.  Justice made the extra free-throw to put Dell Rapids ahead by seven to secure the win.

Dell Rapids shot 49% (22-45) from the field, but did not make a three-pointer in the game.  The Quarriers were a strong 75% (18-24) from the free-throw line.  The Elks finished the game shooting 47% (22-47), 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and 75% (9-12) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Brayden Pankonen had 17 points, four steals, and three rebounds.  Jack Henry had 16 points and four rebounds.  Landon Ruesink finished with 15 points, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.  Aiden Boechler added seven points, and Justice had five points.

Dell Rapids (8-3) will host Vermillion on Thursday, January 27th.
