Quarrier Boys Fall to Cavaliers at DWU Classic

February 14, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Playing in their second game in less than 24 hours, the Dell Rapids Quarriers couldn’t solve the change of pace by the St Thomas More Cavaliers at the DWU Classic on Saturday, February 13th.  The Cavaliers held Dell Rapids to their lowest point total of the season in a 63-53 victory.

The plan by the Cavaliers was obvious from their opening possession of the game.  St Thomas More was going to slow the Quarriers down by holding the ball for almost the entire shot clock.  The slow pace seemed to frustrate the Quarriers and kept them out of their comfort zone all game long.

The Cavaliers held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 12-11.  They pushed the lead eight points by halftime at 30-22.  The Cavaliers continued to grow the lead in the third quarter and led 45-30 heading into the final quarter.  Dell Rapids was finally able to get more into their offensive pace in the fourth quarter and scored nearly half of their points in the final period.  The Quarriers cut the lead down to seven points, 48-41, with 3:34 to play, but the Cavaliers stopped the Quarrier rally.

Dell Rapids shot 50% (21-42) from the field, 39% (7-18) from three-point area, but only shot 4-of-8 from the free-throw line.  The difference in the game came down to the free-throws.  St Thomas More finished the game 14-for-18 from the line, while shooting 45% (21-47) from the field and 37% (7-19) from three-point area.

Brayden Pankonen finished with 12 points, two rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Connor Rentz had 11 points.  Colin Rentz had 10 points, six assists, and three rebounds.  Coby Maeschen added eight points and eight rebounds, and Avery Boechler had seven points and four assists.

Dell Rapids (11-6) will travel to Sisseton on Tuesday, February 16th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Dakota Valley was 6-for-6 from three-point area and 12-for-15 from the field in the third quarter in a 30-point effort to take a 62-54 lead into the fourth quarter.  They extended the lead to 66-54 with 6:35 to play.  The Quarriers cut the lead in half in the next minute to 66-60, but that was as close Dell Rapids would get.

Roach-Valandra Leads Cardinal Boys over #2 Howard

February 11, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

This night belonged to Ashaun Roach-Valandra.  Prior to tip-off against the Howard Tigers, Roach-Valandra was recognized as this year’s Sacred Hoops Kernit Grimshaw Athlete of Character award winner.  In front of a packed gym and family sitting front row, Roach-Valandra had night folks won’t soon forget.

The match-up between the St Mary Cardinals and Howard Tigers on Thursday, February 11th had plenty of hype.  Both teams are atop Region 4B and are two of the top teams in Class B boys basketball.  The game lived up to the hype.

The two teams ended the first quarter tied 12-12.  Howard gained a slight advantage in the second quarter and led 31-25 by halftime.  Both Roach-Valandra and Sam Aslesen of Howard were in double figures at that point in the game.

St Mary opened the second half on an 11-2 run for a 36-33 lead with 4:40 to play in the third quarter.  Howard responded with a quick 4-0 run to go back in front 37-36.  Then St Mary turned the game in their favor.  The Cardinals went on an 8-0 run for a 44-37 lead.  The lead grew to 50-41 by the end of the third quarter.  Howard tried to rally throughout the fourth quarter, but every time the Tigers got within three or four points, the Cardinals had an answer and eventually hung on for a 66-61 victory.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 45% (25-56) from the field, 39% (7-18) from three-point area, and 50% (9-18) from the free-throw line, but the night was Roach-Valandra’s.

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

Roach-Valandra finished with 39 points and seven rebounds.  Sam Palmer added nine points, five assists, four steals, and three rebounds.  Connor Libis had eight points, seven rebounds, and six assists.  John Pica finished with five points and four rebounds.  Aslesen finished with 31 points for Howard.

Wava Osborn

February 10, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Wava I. Osborn passed away peacefully on February 9, 2021, after 99 ½ years of robust living and bringing joy to family and friends. Wava was born in Aberdeen SD on June 21, 1921 to Lester and Helen (Bloom) Wiles. Her early years were spent on a farm by Frankfort, SD.  She attended rural school near Ashton and helped on the farm. Many a story was told of getting caught swimming in the James River, picking eggs, and canning and cooking with her mom. She loved dancing and riding her brother’s rebuilt Indian motorcycle.

Wava married James B. Osborn on September 18, 1941 . They raised their 6 children in a variety of places, starting in Redfield SD. In 1953 they moved to Lead SD, but returned to Redfield where she remained until retirement. Wava spent the majority of her time raising her family which brought her great joy. Additionally, she worked at Redfield State Hospital and School where she cared for the health and well being of those who were developmentally disabled. She was a dedicated employee who truly cared for those in her care.

She was a great cook -“from scratch”.  She loved gardening whether it was her vegetable garden or flower garden. She was an incredible seamstress as well as creating heirloom embroidery pieces. Her ‘home remedies’ were many and surprisingly, they worked! Many pets graced Wava’s life and she loved them all. However, of all the things that enriched her life, it was her family that she cherished the most.

Wava’s last few years were spent at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare where she made new friends, enjoyed bingo and root beer float Fridays. It was here she took up coloring felted pictures and gifted many to family and friends. A special thank you to all at the healthcarecenter for their excellent care.

Wava is preceeded in death by James B. Osborn(husband), Tom Osborn (son), James A. Osborn (grandson), Dustin Norton (grandson), Asher Ludwar(great grandson).

Left to carry on Wava’s spirit are Sally Osborn (wife of Tom), Lester (Donna) Osborn, David (Jan) Osborn, Michael (Mea) Osborn, Beth (Doug) Norton, Rex (Linda Abeldt) Osborn, numerous grand, great, and great great grandchildren, special friend, Lori, as well as extended family and friends who knew and loved her.

The new owner of the Dells Theatre, along with the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, February 6th.  Brian Anderson, a former employee of Logan Luxary Theatres Corporation, celebrated his new ownership with the ribbon cutting prior to an afternoon of movies.

Anderson’s plans for the future include expanding the concession menu, and he also brought back the Bargain Tuesdays.  He will continue to offer first run movies at lower prices than the Sioux Falls theaters and will continue bargain matinees on weekends when all ages are only $5.00 for shows starting before 6:00. Anderson will continue the theatre’s Rewards program and honor the annual popcorn buckets. Other new promotions will be announced in the future.

Current hours of the theater are Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesdays for evening showings.  Afternoon matinees will be held every Saturday and Sunday.  Showtimes will vary depending on the running time of the current movie.

Moves and times will be posted each week on their Facebook page as well as their website, www.dellstheatre.com (which is currently under construction).  The theater opens 30 minutes before the first show of the day.  The box office will close 15 minutes after the start of the last show of the day.

Prices are $7.00 for ages 13 and older and $5.00 for ages 12 and younger.  Bargain matinee price is just $5.00 for all ages and showings starting before 6:00 p.m.
