Quarrier Boys Fall in Home Opener

Dell Rapids jumped out to an early lead, but the Tea Area Titans took the win 67-57 against the Quarriers on Friday, December 17th.

The Quarriers got out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game.  They led by 10 points by the end of the first quarter, 16-6.  The Titans, however, came roaring back in the second quarter.  Tea scored 23 points in the second quarter and cut the lead to just one point by halftime.  Dell Rapids went to the locker room leading 30-29.

Tea’s defense continued to hold Dell Rapids in check in the second half.  The Titans took the lead in the third quarter and held a 47-44 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  Tea outscored Dell Rapids 20-13 in the final quarter for the win.

The Quarriers shot 51% (22-43) from the field, but just 30% (6-20) from three-point area.  They were also only 47% (7-15) from the free-throw line.  Titans were 43% (24-56) from the field, 33% (9-27) from three-point area, and 63% (10-16) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 28 points, two rebounds, and two assists to lead Dell Rapids.  Jack Henry had 10 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  Aiden Boechler added seven points and six rebounds, and Shane Stone had seven points and two rebounds.

Dell Rapids (1-1) will be on a break until Tuesday, December 28th.  The Quarriers will play the Milbank Bulldogs in a girls and boys doubleheader.

Tea Girls Pull Away from Quarriers in Second Half

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team kept the game close in the first half against the Tea Area Titans.  Tea, however, pulled away in the second half for a 52-24 win on Friday, December 17th.

The Titans took an early lead in the opening quarter, but Dell Rapids was within eight points, 18-10, at the end of the first quarter.  The Quarriers kept pace with Tea in the second quarter as both teams struggled to make shots.  The Titans led 27-16 at halftime.

The third quarter was the big difference in the game.  Tea outscored Dell Rapids 21-2 to make the score 48-18 heading into the final quarter.  Dell Rapids outscored Tea in the fourth quarter 6-4.

The Quarriers shot 32% (11-34) from the field and just 2-12 on three-point shots.  Dell Rapids did not attempt a free throw.  Tea, meanwhile, shot 44% (20-45) from the field, 55% (6-11) on three-pointers, and 55% (6-11) on free-throws.  The Titans also forced 31 turnovers, 19 of those on steals.

Claire Wynja had eight points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Jayme Schmidt finished with four points, two rebounds, and two steals.  Liz Price also had four points and three rebounds.  Maggie Schmidt and Alli De Stigter both had three points each.

JV Results

Tea Area Titans JV team brought too much fire power into the Dell Rapids gym Friday night as they jumped on the Lady Quarriers JV team early and never looked back, winning 52-21.  Clara Justice had eight points, four steals, and four rebounds.  Shelby Welbig finished with six points and five rebounds.  Elly Olson added five points and five rebounds.  Kerrigan Kindopp had two points, three assists, and two steals.  Regan VanZee had two rebounds, and an assist, and Adah Cavigelli grabbed two rebounds.

West Central Basketball Teams Split Doubleheader in Winner

TrojansThe West Central Trojan girls and boys basketball teams played a doubleheader at Winner on Friday, December 17th.  The girls got a 10-point victory over the Winner Warriors 58-48, but the West Central boys lost 67-55

West Central 58, Winner 48 – Girls

The Trojans had a nine-point run to end the first half, which propelled them into the second half in the win.  West Central led 12-7 after the first quarter.  The Warriors responded with a 7-0 run to start the second quarter to take a 14-12 lead.  Winner pushed that lead to 23-16, but the Trojans ended the quarter on a 9-0 run of their own for a 25-23 halftime lead.

That run gave West Central the momentum in the second half.  The Trojans extended their lead to 43-34 heading into the final quarter, and then they outscored Winner 15-14 in the final quarter for the win.

The Trojans finished the game shooting 38% (18-47) from the field, just 16% (4-25) from three-point area, but 64% (18-28) from the free-throw line.  Winner was 32% (18-56) shooting on the night, 28% (7-25) from three-point area, but just 45% (5-11) from the free-throw line.

Rylee Haldeman had 19 points, six assists, four rebounds, and four steals to lead the Trojans.  Addy Kramer had 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal.  Tabor Teel ended with eight points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots.

Winner 67, West Central 55 – Boys

The Warriors seemed as if they couldn’t miss in the middle two quarters of the game, which proved to be enough for the win.  West Central held an 11-9 lead after the first quarter, but Winner missed a total of only four shots the entire second quarter.  The Warriors outscored West Central 27-14 for a 36-25 halftime lead.

The hot shooting continued into the third quarter.  Winner only missed six shots in the third quarter and led by as many as 17 points, 50-33, with 1:30 to play in the third quarter.  The third quarter ended with Winner leading 53-38.

West Central made a bid for a comeback in the fourth quarter.  The Trojans got within six points a couple of times, first at 54-48 and then again at 59-53.  The boys scored the next basket to pull within four points 59-55, but Winner got a timely three-pointer with 2:00 to go in the game to push the lead to 62-55.  The Warriors made enough free throws the remainder of the game to secure the win.

The Trojans finished the game shooting 42% (22-52) from the field, just 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and 60% (6-10) from the free-throw line.  Winner was 49% (23-47) from the field, 47% (9-19) from three-point area, and 52% (12-23) from the free-throw line.  Winner also out-rebounded West Central 32-22 in the game.

Grafton Stroup had 14 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Jacob Krempges added 12 points, three steals, and two assists.  Braden Herr had 11 points and five rebounds.  Braden Dierickx had eight points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Quarrier Wrestling Drops Two at West Central Duals

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team traveled to West Central High School for two duals on Friday, December 17th.  Dell Rapids had matches against West Central and Chamberlain.  West Central defeated Dell Rapids 72-6, and Chamberlain got the win 66-20.

Mason Stubbe and Aiden Geraets both had major decision wins on the night.  Mikayla Hight lost her match against West Central

Cardinal Boys Cruise to Second Win of Season

After having to grind out a win to open the season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals cruised to victory in the second game of the season on Friday, December 17th.  St Mary scored 22 unanswered points in the second quarter and seven more to start the second quarter for a 29-0 run on their way to a 64-28 win over the Colman-Egan Hawks.

Colman-Egan didn’t get their first basket of the night until the 4:10 mark of the second quarter.  The Cardinals led 38-7 at halftime.  The lead grew to 55-13 by the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot 43% (25-58) from the field, 47% (7-15) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.  The Hawks shot 29% (12-42) in the game, 0-9 on three-pointers, and 4-7 on free-throws.  The Cardinals forced 19 Colman-Egan turnovers, 12 of those on steals.  St Mary also out-rebounded Colman-Egan 44-19.

Four players finished in double figures.  Ty Brown had 14 points and four rebounds.  Nic Gaspar had 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals.  CJ Smith had 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Dylan Mathis also had 10 points along with four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Aiden Geraets finished with seven points, and Gabe Lindeman had six points and six rebounds.

St Mary (2-0) will play De Smet on Monday, December 20th.

Dell Rapids Bowling Falls to Sioux Falls Jefferson

The Dell Rapids high school club bowling team won one game against Sioux Falls Jefferson, but dropped the match 2-1 on Thursday, December 16th at Sport Bowl in Sioux Falls.  Sioux Falls Jefferson won the first game 1053-868 and then the second game 1192-985.  Dell Rapids took the third game 1062-993.

Bryce Janiszeski had a 559 series (134, 173, 252).  Zander Heathcote finished with 538 (118, 206, 214).  Ashton Schaaf had 514 (173, 173, 168).  Noah Larson finished the match with 449 (182, 142, 125).  Caden Bitzer finished with 443 (142, 152, 149), and Oscar Anderson had 412 (119, 139, 154).

Adaya Penning was the only varsity bowler for the girls team.  She finished with a three-game total of 259 (85, 105, 69).

Dell Rapids will continue their season on January 8th at 3:30 p.m. against Brandon at Eastway Bowl.

West Central Wins Dual over Tri-Valley

The West Central Trojan wrestling team won a dual over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, December 16th.  The Trojans won all but two weight classes in a 67-11 team victory.

Karson Vessells, Orlando Whiting, Rayce Whiting, Chandler Carda, Jesse Jost, Keaton Vessells, Connor Siemonsma, Justin Zirpel, Wyatt Nielsen, Chet Carda, Gabe Gebhard, and Gavin Pischke all earned wins on the night.

Big First Quarter Gives C-E Hawks Win over Cardinal Girls

A big first quarter run by the Colman-Egan Hawks proved to be the difference in the game on Thursday, December 16th.  The Hawks got out to a big 21-2 lead after the first quarter and defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 56-41.

The Cardinals could not overcome the 19-point deficit from the first quarter.  St Mary cut the lead to 31-16 at halftime.  Colman-Egan was able to get the lead to 20 points heading into the fourth quarter at 47-27.  The Cardinals did outscore the Hawks 14-9 in the final quarter.

St Mary shot 30% (13-43) from the field, 25% (7-28) from three-point area, and 53% (8-15) from the free-throw line.  Colman-Egan was 50% from the field (22-44), and almost perfect from two-point range.  The Hawks were 21-30 from inside the three-point line.  They also were 61% (11-18) from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson had 12 points, two rebounds, one steal, and one assist.  Whitney Warwick finished with 11 points, one assist, and one rebound.  Addyson Gilbert added eight points, two rebounds, and two steals.  Courtney Brown had three points and a team-high five rebounds.  Brianna Griffin had four points and four assists.

St Mary (1-1) will play the Dell Rapids Quarriers in the Entringer Classic at Colman-Egan High School on Saturday, December 18th.  Tip-off is at 12:30 p.m.

Mustangs Split Doubleheader in Madison

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball team played a doubleheader against the Madison Bulldogs in Madison on Tuesday, December 14th.  The girls won 47-16, and the boys fell by a score of 56-38.

Tri-Valley 47, Madison 16 – Girls

The Mustang girls defense was fantastic all night long.  Tri-Valley forced 20 Madison turnovers, 15 of those off steals, and held the Bulldogs to just 19% (6-31) shooting from the field in the game.  Tri-Valley finished 34% (17-50) from the field, including 22% (3-19) from three-point area and 67% (10-15) from the free-throw line.

Tri-Valley built a 13-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The Mustangs then held Madison to just two points in the second quarter for a 27-7 halftime lead.  The Mustangs held Madison to just two points again in the third quarter and led 45-9 heading into the final quarter.

Paige Jewett led all scorers in the game with 16 points and also had three rebounds.  Lauren Grinde had 14 points, six steals, and four rebounds.  Ava Pearson had 11 points and six rebounds.  Steph Buchmann had five points, five rebounds, and three steals.

Madison 56, Tri-Valley 38 – Boys

In the second game of the night, the Bulldog boys slowly pulled away from Tri-Valley throughout the game to get the win.  Even though the Mustangs had a four-point lead midway through the first quarter, Madison led by four points at the end of the first quarter, 13-9.  The lead grew to seven points by halftime at 25-18.  The Bulldogs pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 20-12 and pushing the lead to 18 points with 1:03 to go in the quarter.  Madison led 45-29 at the end of the third.

The Mustangs shot 24% (12-50) from the field, 15% (4-26) from three-point area, and 53% (10-19) from the free-throw line.  Madison, meanwhile, finished 38% (20-53) from the field, 13% (1-8) from three-point area, and 68% (15-22) from the free-throw line.

Cory McDonald led the Mustangs with 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Lance DeWitt had 11 points and five rebounds.  Noah Haynes had six points and four rebounds, and Braden Oyen finished with three points.

Both teams will host the Chester Flyers in a doubleheader at home on Friday, December 17th.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids Elementary Students “Pie” Staff Members

The Dell Rapids school district held their annual holiday donation drive for local food pantries December 6th through December 10th.  As part of the drive, the Dell Rapids Elementary School had a goal of collecting at least 1,000 items.  The school not only met their goal, but far exceeded it with 1,349 items collected!

To celebrate reaching the goal, a student from each of the elementary classrooms was randomly selected to “pie” a staff member during a celebration on Tuesday, December 14th.  The most important part of the celebration was recognizing the generosity shown by all the students and their families.

The district as a whole collected over 1,750 items for local food pantries during the donation drive.
