St Mary Boys Cruise to Fourth Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had no trouble winning their fourth straight on Thursday, February 3rd.  St Mary cruised to a 62-31 win at Lake Preston against the Divers.

The Cardinals raced out to a 14-0 run to start the game and never looked back.  St Mary led 22-6 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 44-15 by halftime.  The Cardinals outscored the Divers 18-16 in the second half.

St Mary shot 44% (23-52) in the game, 16% (2-12) from three-point area, and 58% (14-24) from the free-throw line.  Lake Preston was 23% (11-47) shooting, 10% (2-20) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.

Ty Brown had 17 points and eight rebounds.  Dylan Mathis finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots.  John Pica added 11 points and five rebounds.  Nic Gaspar ended with 10 points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  CJ Smith had seven points, two rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

The Cardinals will host the Arlington Cardinals in a girls and boys doubleheader on Monday, February 7th.

Quarrier Boys Beat Tri-Valley on Senior Night

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team earned a win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on senior night on Thursday, February 3rd.  The Quarriers defeated the Mustangs 71-63 after recognizing their three seniors Shane Stone, Aiden Boechler, and Landon Ruesink.

The two teams traded blows in the first half.  The Quarrires were able break away for a five point lead by the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids led 22-17 at the quarter break.  That lead was short lived as Tri-Valley was able to get a four-point lead, 35-31, with 1:50 to play in the second quarter.  The Quarriers ended the half on a 10-1 run for a 41-36 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids was able to hold the lead throughout the entire second half.  The advantage grew to double digts, 56-44, heading into the fourth quarter.  Tri-Valley tried to make a run late in the game, getting within five points, but Dell Rapids made enough free-throws in the closing minute in the win.

The Quarriers were 50% (27-54) shooting, 39% (9-23) from three-point area, and 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 46% (26-56) from the field, 33% (6-18) on three-pointers, and 38% (5-13) from the free-throw line.

Four players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jack Henry had 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Brayden Pankonen had 13 points, five rebounds, four steals, and seven assists.  Ruesink added 12 points, four assists, and two steals.  Stone finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Boechler had seven points, six rebounds, and two assists.

Dell Rapids will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 8th.

Mustang Girls Spoil Senior Night with Second Half Surge

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls celebrated their six seniors while hosting the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, February 3rd.  The Mustangs spoiled the senior night celebration with a 63-46 win.

The first half featured a few runs by both teams.  After the Mustangs scored the first four points, Dell Rapids went on an 11-0 run and led 11-4 with 2:20 to play in the first quarter.  Tri-Valley responded with a 10-0 to finish the quarter for a 14-11 lead.  The Quarriers had another run in them in the second quarter.  They outscored Tri-Valley 14-6 for a 25-20 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids still held a five point lead, 34-29, with 4:40 to play in the third quarter.  That’s when the Mustangs went on a big roll.  The Mustangs pulled within three points, 36-33, with 3:18 left in the quarter and then finished with a 10-0 run for a 43-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Tri-Valley then outscored Dell Rapids 20-10 for the win.

The Quarriers shot 27% (17-63) from the field, 20% (5-20) from three-point area, and 47% (7-15) from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley shot 43% (21-49) in the game, 55% (6-11) on three pointers, and 83% (15-18) from the free-throw line.

Alli De Stigter led Dell Rapids with 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Zoey Hilmoe had eight points and five rebounds.  Mady VanOverbeke and Jayme Schmidt both had five points and three rebounds each.  Haighleigh Barnhart had four points, eight rebounds, and three assists.  Maggie Schmidt added four points and two assists.

JV Results

After leading by two points at halftime, the Quarrier JV team was outscored 18-9 in the third period.  A hard-fought fourth quarter was not enough as the young Quarriers ran out of time, falling 39-42.  Jenna Miller had 13 points, five rebounds, four steals, and two assists.  Shelby Welbig had 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals.  Clara Justice had eight points and five rebounds.  Kerrigan Kindopp added five points, two rebounds, two steals, and three assists.  Elly Olson finished with three points, five steals, and three assists.

Tea Gets Comeback over West Central

The Tea Titans erased a 13-point halftime deficit and beat the West Central Trojans 68-62 on Thursday, February 3rd.

The first quarter was back and forth between the two.  West Central held a slim 19-18 advantage at the quarter break.  The game was tied 25-25 with 4:50 to play in the second quarter.  The Trojans made a big run to finish the first half.  They outscored the Titans 15-2 for a 40-27 lead at halftime.

The Titans scored the first nine points of the third quarter and pulled within four points, 40-36, with 4:20 to go in the quarter.  Tea got the lead down to two points by the end of the quarter.  West Central led 47-45 heading into the fourth.  Tea took their first lead of the second half, 53-51, with 7:00 to play in the game.  They continued to slowly extend their lead throughout the rest of the quarter for the come-from-behind win.

West Central shot 38% (23-60) from the field in the game, 38% (11-29) from three-point area, and 5-7 from the free-throw line.  Tea finished the game 46% (25-54) from the field, 38% (6-16) on three pointers, and 55% (12-22) from the free-throw line.

Grafton Stroup had 17 points, two rebounds, and two steals.  Dillon Jackson finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Braden Herr and Jack Linneman both had eight points each.  Braden Dierickx added seven points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals.

Trojan Gymnastics Seventh at Regions, VanHyfte Qualifies for State

The West Central Trojan gymnastics team competed at the Region 1A meet in Britton on Thursday, February 3rd.  The Trojans finished seventh with a team score of 110.325.  Madison won the region with 138.250 points.  Deuel was second followed by Estelline/Hendricks.

Maya VanHyfte qualified for the state competition in Floor Exercise.  The state competition for all classes will be held at the Corn Palace in Mitchell February 11th and 12th.

West Central Gymnastics Finishes Third in Vermillion

The West Central Trojan gymnastics team finished third in a triangular in Vermillion on Thursday, January 28th.  West Central finished with 112.3 points.  Vermillion was first with 129.65 points, and Wagner-Bon Homme was second with 129.45 points.

Jenna Schoenemann was sixth in all-around with 28.65 points.  Maya VanHyfte was seventh with 28.50 points, and Olivia Hofer was eighth at 28.40 points.

The Trojans will head north to Britton-Hecla for the Region 1A meet on Thursday, February 3rd.

Flandreau Pulls Away from Dell Rapids in Third Quarter

The Dell Rapids Quarriers had a three-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday, February 1st.  The Quarriers hosted the Flandreau Fliers, and the Fliers used a third quarter run for a 64-51 win.

The first half was played close.  Flandreau had a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-10.  The Fliers also held the lead, 25-21, at halftime.  It was a third quarter run by Flandreau that was the difference in the game.  The Fliers scored the first seven points of the second half and led 32-21.  The lead continued to grow as the Fliers led 44-30 at the end of the third quarter.  With 3:15 in the game, Flandreau led 58-40.  Dell Rapids went on a 9-0 run in the next minute to cut the lead to 58-49, but Flandreau ended the game outscoring the Quarriers 6-2.

The Quarriers shot 40% (19-47) from the field, 28% (5-18) on three pointers, and 8-10 from the free-throw line.  Flandreau was hot all night, shooting 63% (24-38), 50% (6-12) from three-point area, and 59% (10-17) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 15 points, four assists, and two steals.  Landon Ruesink finished with 13 points, two rebounds, and two steals.  Jack Henry added 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Aiden Boechler had five points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Shane Stone ended with four points and two rebounds.

Dell Rapids will host Tri-Valley on Thursday, February 3rd.

Cardinal Girls Ride First Half to Win over Hills-Beaver Creek

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals used a strong first half for a 64-49 road win over the Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots on Monday, January 31st.

The Cardinals were hot from three-point area in the first half and the defensive pressure caused problems for the Patriots.  St Mary built a 34-15 lead by halftime.  The two teams traded baskets throughout the second half.  The Cardinal lead from the first half was too big for the Patriots to overcome.

St Mary finished the game shooting 44% (25-57) overall, 40% (12-30) from three-point area, and 2-6 from the free-throw line.  The Patriots were 44% (19-43) shooting, 33% (6-18) from on three pointers, and 5-14 from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 16 fast break points and 24 points off turnovers.  Hills-Beaver Creek had 24 turnovers, 15 of those Cardinal steals.

Ella Griffin hat 16 points, finishing 6-10 on three-pointers, along with three rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Madala Hanson had 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Maya Heinitz had six points and two assists.  Addyson Gilbert and Addison Libis both had five points each.

St Mary (9-6) will host Arlington on Monday, February 7th.

Baltic Gets Overtime Win over Dell Rapids

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team traveled to Baltic to play the Bulldogs on Monday, January 31st.  In a Region 3A match-up, the Bulldogs earned an overtime win over the Quarriers 39-35.

Dell Rapids scored 15 of their 35 points in the first quarter as they built a 15-10 lead by the end of the quarter.  Both teams scored eight points in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids continued to lead by five points, 23-18, at halftime.  Both teams cooled offensively in the second half.  The two teams combined for seven points in the third quarter as the Quarriers led 25-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Quarriers took at 29-23 lead with 5:55 to play for one of their largest leads of the game.  Dell Rapids, however, would not score the rest of the quarter, and Baltic tied the game 29-29 to send it to overtime.  Claire Wynja made a three-pointer with :58 seconds left in overtime to tie the game 33-33, but Baltic made their free-throws in the closing seconds of the game for the 39-35 win.

Dell Rapids shot 21% (10-48) from the field, 21% (4-19) from three-point area, and 55% (11-20) from the free-throw line.  Baltic was 28% (13-47) shooting, 11% (2-19) from three-point area, and 61% (11-18) from the free-throw line.

Haileigh Barnhart had nine points and six rebounds.  Jayme Schmidt finished with six points and three rebounds.  Jenna Miller also had six points.  Zoey Hilmoe had four points, seven rebounds, and two assists.  Maggie Schmidt had four points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Wynja added three points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

The Quarriers (2-14) will host Tri-Valley on Thursday, February 3rd.

JV Results

The Quarrier JV team cruised to their eighth win of the season, defeating the Baltic JV team by a score of 33-25.  Miller finished with 11 points, two steals, and an assist.  Shelby Welbig had six points and seven rebounds.  Clara Justice finished with five points.  Kerrigan Kindopp had four points and two assists.  Elly Olson had four points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Adah Cavigielli added three points.

Tri-Valley Wrestling Eighth in Wagner

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team finished eighth at the Wagner Invite on Saturday, January 29th.  Tri-Valley finished with 75.5 points.  Redfield Area won the team title with 200.0 points.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney was second with 199.0 points, and Parkston placed third with 158.0 points.

Mason Hendrixson had a second place finish in the 170-pound weight class with a 3-1 record for the day.  Lawson Loiseau placed fifth in the 136-pound class with a 3-2 record.  Cole Hendrixson (106-pound, 3-3), Treyson Richter (113-pound, 3-3), Brody Dybvig (126-pound, 2-3), Landyn Reiser (145-pound, 3-3), and Luke Nehlich (195-pound, 2-3) all finished sixth in their respective weight classes.  Zach Powell had a win in the 152-pound division.

The Mustangs will travel to Redfield for the Redfield Invite on Saturday, February 5th.
