Quarrier Girls Get First Win of Season

January 18, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team got their first win of the season on Saturday, January 16th.  The Quarriers defeated the Milbank Bulldogs 42-37.

Milbank scored the first two points of the game, and that was their only lead of the night.  They tied the game a couple of times, but both times the Quarriers held tough to keep the lead.  After the opening score by the Bulldogs, Dell Rapids scored 10 points in a row to lead 10-2 after the first quarter.  Milbank scored the first eight points of the second quarter to tie the game 10-10, but Dell Rapids got the last basket of the half to lead 12-10 at halftime.

The game was again tied 15-15 with 5:35 to play in the third quarter.  The Quarriers then went on a 10-0 run to lead 25-15 with 1:40 to go.  They finished the third quarter leading 27-17.  The Quarrier lead grew to 11 points at 37-26 with 3:00 to play in the game, but the Bulldogs made a late run.  They sank three three-pointers in a row to cut the lead to 37-35 with 1:53 to go in the game, but Dell Rapids closed out the game on a 5-2 run for the win.

Defense was key for the Quarriers as they forced 29 Milbank turnovers, 15 of those being steals.  Those steals helped secure the victory on a night Dell Rapids shot just 29% (13-45) from the field and 20% (4-20) on three-point shots.  Dell Rapids had success at the foul line going 12-17 in the game.

Zoey Hilmoe had 12 points and four rebounds.  Alli De Stigter finished with six points.  Becky Dorn had five points and 10 rebounds.  Maggie Schmidt ended with five points, four assists, and three steals.  Claire Wynja also had five points in the game.

Dell Rapids (1-8) will host the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, January 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

C Team Results

The girls C team picked up their second win of the season with a hard fought 40-21 victory over the Milbank C team Saturday afternoon.  The girls played outstanding defense and rebounded extremely well in limiting Milbank to very few second chance scoring opportunities. Offensively, Dells did a nice job of getting the ball inside both passing and off the dribble which created several easy baskets.

Building Permit Valuations up in 2020 for Dell Rapids

January 15, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The final numbers for building permits in 2020 for the City of Dell Rapids were presented to the Dell Rapids City Council during their last regular meeting.  The numbers for 2020 surpassed the numbers from 2019.

The total valuation for 2020 was $7,238,823.  That was a big increase from 2019, which saw a valuation of just over $4 million.  There were 10 new homes built in 2020, one new four-plex, and one new two-plex.  There were 12 new homes built in 2019 and 17 new homes in 2018.

Dell Rapids did not have any large scale commercial projects in 2020, but the Dell Rapids public school had over $2.5 million improvements done to the inside of the building.

“We’re looking good going into 2021.  In the last year there was the acquisition of property north of 15th street, so you know we’ve got future residential multi-family and single-family homes that will be slated for building in the future,” said City Administrator Justin Weiland during the council meeting.
