After suffering back-to-back losses, the Tri-Valley Mustang girls got a big victory over the Andes Central/Dakota Christian Thunder at the DSU Classic in Madison on Saturday, January 16th. The Mustangs won 63-41.
The Thunder had a small 4-2 lead very early in the game, but the Mustangs went on a 8-0 run for a 10-4 advantage. It was a lead they would not lose in the game, but the Thunder did threaten in the third quarter.
Tri-Valley was able to push their six-point lead to nine by the end of the first quarter at 16-7. The lead grew to 17 points, 24-7, at the 3:25 mark. The Mustangs held a 31-18 lead at halftime.
The Thunder made a run in the third quarter. They got within five points at 33-28 with 2:51 to play in the quarter, but Tri-Valley was able to push the lead back to 10 points by the end of the third quarter, 43-33. The Mustangs then outscored the Thunder 20-7 in the final quarter to secure the win.
Tri-Valley was 37% (23-62) from the field, 32% (10-31) from three-point area, and 70% (7-10) from the free-throw line. They had a total of 43 team rebounds, 14 assists, 11 steals, and turned the ball over 14 times.
Steph Buchmann had 16 points and four rebounds for the Mustangs. Blayne Gacke had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Tabor Teel finished with 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Kaitlyn Mohnen added eight points and eight rebounds.
Tri-Valley (5-4) will travel to Dakota Valley High School to play the Panthers on Friday, January 22nd.
