Quarrier Girls Bounce Back with Home Win

Less than 24 hours after a heart-breaking loss to Sioux Valley in Volga, the Dell Rapids Quarriers bounced back to get a 39-36 home win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 23rd.

The girls trailed throughout most of the game, but made a surge in the fourth quarter for the win.  Dell Rapids did hold an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Huskies went on a 7-2 run to lead 7-5 at the quarter break.  Elk Point-Jefferson pushed their lead to three points by halftime at 15-12.

Elk Point-Jefferson was able to maintain their slim lead in the third quarter.  Dell Rapids got it down within two points at 29-27 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Quarrier defense held the Huskies without a field goal until the 2:50 mark in the fourth quarter, which allowed them to take the lead.  The Quarriers led 39-36 in the final seconds, and the Huskies last-second shot was no good.

Dell Rapids finished shooting 26% (11-42) in the game, 22% (4-18) from three-point area, but remained solid from the free-throw line for the second game in a row shooting 81% (13-16).

Maggie Schmidt led the team in scoring with 16 points and also had four rebounds.  Zoey Hilmoe had 12 points and five rebounds.  Claire Wynja had five points, and Haileigh Barnhart and Mady Vanoverbeke both had three points.  Becky Dorn had a team-high seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Dell Rapids (2-10) will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, January 28th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

C Team Results

In a closely played game throughout, the lady Quarrier C team won a thrilling 33-31 game over Elk Point Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at the Dell Rapids Middle School.  The girls played some of their best defense of the year in picking up their third win.  All of the girls either hit big shots, grabbed key rebounds, forced EPJ into a timely turnover, or played good pressure defense, especially in the fourth quarter.

Tri-Valley Boys Fall Short at Dakota Valley

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys basketball team fell a little short on the road against the Dakota Valley Panthers on Friday, January 22nd.  The Panthers got the 76-68 victory.

Tri-Valley dictated the pace of the game through much of the first quarter.  They had a 15-10 lead, but the Panthers started to heat up from the outside and went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter.  Dakota Valley led 19-15 after the first quarter.   The Panthers slowly built their lead to double digits by halftime and led 44-34.

The Mustangs kept themselves in the games in the second half.  Every time the Panthers tried to make an extended run, Tri-Valley got a much needed basket.  Dakota Valley, however, was able to push the lead to 16 points at 62-46 heading into the final quarter.  The lead would stay about that spot until the final couple minutes of the game.  Tri-Valley made a late run, but ran out of time.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 38% (20-52) from the field, 36% (8-22) from three-point area, and 78% (18-23) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Nick Haas had 22 points and three rebounds.  Riley Haynes finished with 18 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Tyler Johnson added 16 points and five rebounds.

Tri-Valley (3-6) will host Canton on Tuesday, January 26th.

Dakota Valley Outlasts Mustang Girls

The Dakota Valley Panthers made a big run late in the second half and outlasted the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, January 22nd at Dakota Valley High School.  The Mustangs fell to the Panthers 51-60.

Dakota Valley did have the lead early in the game.  They held a 12-10 advantage after the first quarter.  The Mustangs went on an 8-0 run in the second quarter and finished the first half with a 25-22 lead.

The Mustangs shot the ball well in the third quarter and extended their lead.  Tri-Valley led by seven points at 43-36 with seconds remaining in the quarter before Dakota Valley made a three-point shot at the buzzer.  The Panthers then made a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 43-42.  Those back-to-back three pointers sparked the Panther offense.  They were 7-10 shooting in the quarter and a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line and outscored Tri-Valley 21-8 in the final quarter for the win.

Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 37% (18-49) from the field, 23% (5-22) from three-point area, and 77% (10-13) from the free-throw line.

Tabor Teel ended the game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.  Blayne Gacke had 10 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.  Steph Buchmann had nine points, and Kaitlyn Mohnen had eight points and four rebounds.

The Mustangs (5-5) will host Canton on Tuesday, January 26th.

Quarrier Girls Lose Heart Breaker in Volga

Leading by a point, 58-57, with just seconds remaining, the Dell Rapids Quarriers watched a shot from Sioux Valley go through the net with :07 to go that proved to be the game-winner as the Cossacks got a 59-58 come-from-behind win on Friday, January 23rd.

Sioux Valley held the early lead in the game.  The led 13-3 at one point in the first quarter and held a 16-8 advantage heading into the second quarter.  The Cossacks scored the first basket of the second quarter to lead by 10 again at 18-8.  Dell Rapids scored the next nine points to cut the lead to 18-17.  Sioux Valley was ahead 22-19 with 3:35 to go in the quarter before Dell Rapids went on an 8-0 run to lead 27-22 at halftime.

The Quarriers continued the momentum in the third quarter.  Every time the Cossacks got within four or five points, the Quarriers were able to make the timely basket to extend the lead.  Dell Rapids led 46-37 heading into the final quarter.   The Quarriers had a 10-point lead with 5:45 to play at 49-39.  Sioux Valley tied the game at 55-55 and then went ahead 57-55 with under a minute to play.  Claire Wynja made a three-point shot with :33 to go to give the lead back to Dell Rapids 58-57, but Sioux Valley got the game-winner on a couple of offensive rebounds to get the win.

The stats were just as even as the score.  Both teams shot 43% from the field and 33% from three-point area.  Both teams also had 13 team assists.  Sioux Valley had 17 turnovers, while Dell Rapids had 16, and the Cossacks had a slim 28-23 advantage in rebounds.   The difference in the game came down to timely hot shooting by Sioux Valley.  The Cossacks were 8-12 shooting in the fourth quarter, including 4-7 from three-point area, and 2-2 from the free-throw line.

Zoey Hilmoe had 16 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the game.  Mady Vanoverbeke finished with 14 points and two steals.  Wynja had nine points, all on made three-point shots.  Haileigh Barnhart added seven points and five rebounds.

Dell Rapids (1-10) will point Elk Point-Jefferson on Saturday, January 23rd in a girls and boys double-header.  The girls game is scheduled to tip-off about 1:30 p.m. and can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Advance to DVC Championship Again

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team is headed back to the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament championship game.  The Cardinals defeated the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks 74-38 in the semifinals in Colman on Friday, January 22nd.

The Cardinals got out to a very fast start in the first quarter as they got out to a big 29-6 lead by the end of the quarter.  That fast start helped them cruise to the victory.  St Mary led 48-14 at halftime.  Estelline/Hendricks made a little run in the third quarter.  The Redhawks outscored St Mary 17-11 to make the score 59-31 with 4:00 to play in the third quarter.  The Cardinals then held the Redhawks to just seven more points the remainder of the game.

St Mary shot 54% (29-54) from the field, 32% (6-19) from three-point area, and 67% (10-15) from the free-throw line.  They out rebounded Estelline/Hendricks 38-13 and forced 12 turnovers, 11 of those were steals.

Connor Libis had 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals.  Max Herber finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and two assists.   Ashaun Roach-Valndra added 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Nic Gaspar had eight points, and Ty Brown finished with seven points.

St Mary (8-3) will look to defend their DVC tournament title against Elkton-Lake Benton on Saturday, January 23rd.  The game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Elkton and can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Rally in Second Half in Madison

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys needed a second half rally in Madison against the Bulldogs on Thursday, January 21st, but they came home with a 64-54 victory.

The Quarriers got off to a slow start in the first half.  Madison led by four points at 13-9 after the first quarter.  They built the lead to double digits in the second quarter before Dell Rapids was able to cut the lead down to 31-25 at halftime.

Dell Rapids got the offense going in the second half.   They outscored the Bulldogs 21-13 in the third quarter to hold a 46-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Quarriers then outscored Madison 18-10 in the final quarter to take the win.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 42% (20-48) from the field, but just 27% (3-11) from three-point area.  They took advantage of the trips to the free-throw line converting on 75% (21-28).

Colin Rentz finished with a double-double scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.  He also had seven assists and three steals.  Brayden Pankonen had 11 points, two rebounds and two steals.  Carter Nelson finished with 10 points and five rebounds.  Landon Ruesink added nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Connor Rentz had eight points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Dell Rapids (7-2) will host Elk Point-Jefferson in a double-header with the girls on Saturday, January 23rd.  The girls varsity game will start around 1:30 p.m. with the boys scheduled to start about 3:00 p.m.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Stunned on Last Second Shot

Leading 35-34 over Colman-Egan with just seconds to go in the game, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals was at the free-throw line with a one-and-one opportunity.  The free throw shot missed, but the Cardinals grabbed the offensive rebound.  However, a steal and a race down the court to beat the clock resulted in a game-winning, last second shot by the Colman-Egan Hawks to send them to the championship game of the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament with a 36-35 victory on Thursday, January 21st.

Both of the offenses had some struggles in the first quarter.  The Cardinals held a slim 6-5 advantage at the quarter break.  The Hawks were able to build an eight point lead at 21-13 late in the second quarter, but the Cardinals ended the half on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 21-18 by halftime.

St Mary continued to chip away at the small Colman-Egan lead in the third quarter.  The two teams headed into the fourth quarter tied 28-28.  Colman-Egan was leading 32-30, but St Mary went on a 5-0 run to lead 35-32 with 2:00 to go in the game.  The Hawks ended the game on a 4-0 run, including the last second game-winning shot, to get the win.

The stats were fairly even between the two teams.  Both teams finished the game shooting 33% from the field.  St Mary was 25% from three-point area, while the Hawks were 23%.  Colman-Egan out rebounded St Mary 31-29.

Ella Heinitz had 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Courtney Brown finished with seven points and three rebounds.  Brianna Griffin had six points, and Karlie Klein had four points and four rebounds.

St Mary (7-3) will play Arlington in the 3rd/4th place game of the DVC Tournament on Saturday, January 23rd.  The game will be at 4:00 p.m. in Elkton and can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Trojan Boys Grind out Win in Lennox

It wasn’t the easiest of wins for the West Central Trojan boys basketball team, but they were able to get a 52-45 victory over the Lennox Orioles on Thursday, January 21st in Lennox.

The Trojans found themselves trailing early in the game.  Lennox held a 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, and extended it to six points early in the second quarter.  West Central was able to battle back from the deficit and take a 24-23 lead into halftime.

The Trojans continued to grind out the physical game and grow the lead in the third quarter.  West Central led 39-32 heading into the final quarter.  The Trojans kept about a seven point lead throughout the entire fourth quarter for the win.

Derek Eidsness had 12 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists to lead the Trojans.  Jacob Krempges also had 11 points along with six rebounds, and four steals.  Kasan Abedi and Hunter Hagerty both ended the night with eight points and four rebounds.

West Central (5-3) will host Garretson on Monday, January 25th.

Win Streak Continues for West Central Girls

The West Central Trojan girls basketball team on their sixth game in a row and tenth overall after a 58-29 win over the Lennox Orioles in Lennox on Thursday, January 21st.

The defenses for both teams made things difficult on the offensive side of the ball in the first quarter.  The two teams combined for just 13 points as West Central led 9-4 at the quarter break.  West Central got into the offensive groove in the second quarter putting up 16 points while holding Lennox to nine for a 25-13 lead at halftime.

The Trojans then opened up the game in the third quarter.  Rylee Haldeman scored the first five points of the third quarter as the Trojans lead grew to 30-13 in the first minute of the second half.  That lead continued to grow in the third quarter as West Central held Lennox to just four points in the quarter for a 48-17 lead heading into the final quarter.  Lennox held a 12-10 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

West Central shot the ball well again.  They finished shooting 48% (21-44) from the field, 38% (8-21) from three-point area, and 89% (8-9) from the free-throw line.  The Trojans had 25 team rebounds and only turned the ball over seven times.

Four players finished in double figures.  Cassidy Siemonsma had 13 points and four rebounds.  Haldeman had 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Josslin Jarding had 11 points and six rebounds.  Abby Kramer added 11 points and five rebounds.

West Central (10-1) will play Sioux Falls Christian in Sioux Falls in a big Class A and Region 3 girls match-up on Monday, January 25th.

Tri-Valley Wrestling Drops Two Close Duals

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team had two close dual matches at West Central High School on Tuesday, January 19th.  Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they came up on the losing end of both of the duals.

Tri-Valley fell to West Central 30-46 and also lost a dual to Vermillion 39-42.

Porter Jensen, Mason Hendrickson, Isaac Nehlich, Alex Andresen, and Ethan Nehlich all had two wins on the night.

Tri-Valley will be back at West Central on Saturday, January 23rd for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament.
