Buzzer Beater Caps off Come-from-Behind Win for Quarrier Boys

December 19, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Facing a 52-40 deficit to start the fourth quarter against the Tea Area Titans, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team seemed unfazed with the task at hand.  Dell Rapids scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to cut the Titan lead in half.  The Titans seemed to still be in control of the game through first half of the fourth quarter.  Austin Lake made a driving layup with 4:40 to play to put Tea Area ahead by nine at 62-53.  Dell Rapids went on a 6-1 run over the next three minutes to pull within four at 63-59.

A layup by Conner Rentz with :47 to go in the game put Dell Rapids down by just two points at 63-61.  Caden Ellingson responded with a reverse layup with :38 on the clock and also drew a foul on the play.  Ellingson missed the free-throw, and Colin Rentz  drove the length of the court for a layup.  After an errant pass that was stolen by Brayden Pankonen, Landon Ruesink found a wide-open Coby Maeschen who made a layup from the right block after a pump fake to tie the game at 65-65 with :07.4 to go.  The Titans called their final timeout to try to set up the game-winning play.

Full court pressure by the Quarrier defense forced a Tea travel in the back court, and Dell Rapids had a chance to win the game with :04.4 seconds.  Col. Rentz put the ball in play in front of his bench with a pass to Maeschen.  Col. Rentz broke for the hoop, and Maeschen handed him the ball.  With is body twisting, Col. Rentz looped a shot with his right hand towards the hoop, and the ball went off the backboard and through the next as time expired for the 67-65 win.

The game lived up to the hype of an early-season top-five match-up between the two teams.  Dell Rapids entered the game ranked third in the media polls, while Tea Area was ranked fourth.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first two quarters of the game trading leads along the way.  Dell Rapids held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 16-13.  Tea outscored Dell Rapids by three points in the second quarter, and the game was tied 32-32 at halftime.  The game was again tied 38-38 with 4:30 to play in the third quarter, but the Titans finished the quarter on a 14-2 run for a 52-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter to set the stage for the dramatic come-from-behind win for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 57% (27-47) from the field, just 11% (2-18) from three-point area, and 69% (11-16) from the free-throw line.  The Titans finished shooting 51% (27-53) from the field, 25% (3-12) from three-point area, and 62% (8-13) from the free-throw line.

Colin Rentz had 29 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals in the game.  Connor Rentz finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Maeschen ended with eight points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Landon Ruesink also had eight points.  Carter Nelson had five points and four rebounds.  Cael Lundin led all scorers with 32 points, along with five rebounds, and four assists for the Titans.  Jeff Worth added 13 points and five rebounds.

Dell Rapids (3-0) will have a break until Thursday, December 31st.  The Quarriers will play the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the Entringer Classic in Colman at 5:00 p.m.

November 4, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley, Dells City Journal

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team were just a few points short of advancing to the next round of the Region 3A tournament.  Dell Rapids fell to the Baltic Bulldogs in five sets on Tuesday, November 3rd.  The set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, and 12-15.

The first set was played close throughout its entirety.  Baltic got ahead by as many as four points at 13-9 and 14-10, but that was the largest lead either team had.  Dell Rapids’ largest lead was two points, and they had that as late as 24-22.  Baltic pulled within a point at 24-23, but the Qurriers got the final point for the opening set win.

The Bulldogs found some momentum early in the second set.  They lead 7-4 early, and then went on a 7-0 to lead 14-4.  Dell Rapids was only able to pull within three points at 18-15 as Baltic was able to pull away for the 25-19 win to even the match.

Baltic again got out to an early three-to-four point lead to start the third set.    The lead continued to be about four points throughout much of the game.  The Bulldogs got the lead to ten points at 24-14.  Dell Rapids scored four in a row to make it 24-18, but the rally ended there as Baltic won 25-18 to take a 2-1 set lead.

Even though the rally in the third set ended, the Quarriers continued that momentum into the fourth set and opened with a 6-1 run.  Dell Rapids continued to build on the lead as the score reached 22-11 in favor of the Quarriers.  The Bulldogs pulled within three points at 24-21, but Dell Rapids won 25-21 to force the fifth and final set of the match.

The Bulldogs rallied first and got out to a quick 5-2 lead.  Dell Rapids responded with three in a row to tie the set 5-5 and then took an 8-6 lead.  Baltic was able to the the set at 9-9, and the score remained tied at 10-10, 11-11, and 12-12.  Baltic scored the advantage at 13-12, and that was just enough of a spark to get them the final two points for the 15-12 win to advance to the next round of the Region 3A tournament.

Kenzie Garry finished with 18 kills, four blocks, and six digs in the match.  Emma VanRegenmorter had 14 kills, 12 blocks, nine digs, and two ace serves.  Sophi Randall finished with 34 set assists, 12 blocks, seven digs, and two ace serves.  Olivia Prasek added six blocks.  Sam Price ended the night with 38 digs.  Mackenzie Apland had 16 digs, Lexi Ingalls finished with 15, and Emma Molskness had 13 digs.

Quarrier Football Ends at West Central

October 30, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

For the second year in a row, the Dell Rapids Quarrier football team had their season come to an end at the hands of the West Central Trojans in the quarterfinals of the 11A playoffs.  Dell Rapids traveled to Hartford to play the Trojans on Thursday, October 29th, and West Central advanced to the semifinals with a 16-14 victory over the Quarriers.

West Central started the game with a fury.  After receiving the kickoff, the Trojans scored in two plays taking a total of 38 seconds and covering 68  yards.  Justin Zirpel had a run of 49 yards, and Ryan Healy scored on a 19-yard run to give West Central a 7-0 lead.  The Dell Rapids defense was able  to contain the  Trojans after that opening drive.

The Quarriers got on the board late in the second quarter.  The Quarriers had an eight-play, 47-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Coby Maeschen.  Aiden Boechler kicked the extra point to tie the game 7-7 with 3:03 to play in the first half.  The Trojans were able to get one more score on the board before halftime.  Derek Eidsness made a 20-yard field goal with :09 to play in the second quarter for a 10-7 lead heading into halftime.

Dell Rapids put together an impressive drive to start the third quarter.  After receiving the kickoff and starting on their own 20-yard line, the Quarriers marched down the field 80 yards on 13 plays taking almost seven minutes off the clock.  Maeschen found the endzone again, this time on a 15-yard run with 5:02 to play in third quarter.  Another extra point by Boechler gave the Quarriers a 14-10 lead.  Both defenses continued to play strong, and the score remained 14-10 in favor of Dell Rapids at the end of the third quarter.

The Quarriers seemed to be gaining momentum.  The defense forced a punt, and the offense took over on their own 33-yard line with 9:36 to go in the game.  Landon Ruesink had a 27-yard run on the first play of the drive to the Trojan 40-yard line.  The Quarriers were then faced with a fourth down and two yards to go on the West Central 32-yard line, and the Trojan defense was able to stop the Quarriers and take over the ball with 7:24 to play.

That defensive stop seemed to give West Central momentum.  They put together a 10 play, 66-yard drive that took five minutes and 35 seconds.  Zirpel scored on a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line with 1:49 to play in the game.  The extra point was no good, but the Trojans took a 16-14 lead.  The Quarriers were able to get the ball to their own 39 yard line with just over a minute to play, but the drive stopped there and the Trojans held on for the win.

The Quarriers finished with 227 yards of total offense, 143 rushing yards and 84 passing yards.  West Central had 231 yards of total offense,  all of those  rushing yards.  Both teams had a total of 11 first downs, and each team committed three penalties and punted four times.

Austin Henry finished the game 3-10 passing for 66 yards.  Colin Rentz was 1-1 passing for 18 yards.  Ruesink had two catches for 52 yards, Henry had a catch for 18 yards, and Rentz had a catch for 14 yards.  Ruesink also had 12 carries for 47 yards.  Maeschen finished with 12 carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns.  Brayden Gee had seven carries for 30 yards, and Henry had four carries for 25 yards.  Ruesink led the team with nine tackles in the game.  Gee had eight tackles.  Maeschen and Landon VonHoltum both had seven tackles each, and Carter Nelson and Victory Knuppe both had six tackles each.

Dell Rapids has their 2020 season come to an end with an overall record of 5-4.
