The atmosphere was slightly different than last year in the Dell Rapids versus Dell Rapids St Mary boys basketball game, but the battle was just as intense.  Last season’s Entringer Classic battle was held in Brookings to almost full gym.  This year the game was held in Colman with fan restrictions, but the Quarriers and Cardinals put on another great game for the fans on Thursday, December 31st.

The score remained close throughout much of the game before the Quarriers pulled away in the final minutes for a 71-56 victory.

The Cardinals again got the game within a point early in the third quarter.  A three-point shot by Ashaun Roach-Valandra with 5:50 to go in the quarter made the score 32-31 in favor of the Quarriers.  Dell Rapids was again able to respond and slowly pushed their lead to six points at 46-40 heading into the final quarter. St Mary went on an 8-4 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to get within two points at 50-48, but the Quarriers answered with a 10-0 for their largest lead of the game at 60-48.  They continued with that momentum the rest of the game for the 71-56 win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 33% (16-48) from the field, 30% (8-27) from three-point area, and 73% (16-22) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 24 team rebounds, nine assists, and 13 turnovers.  Dell Rapids finished 52% (26-50) from the field, 31% (5-16) from three-point area, and 78% (14-18) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 29 team rebounds, 17 steals, and 11 turnovers.

Two players finished in double figures for the Cardinals.  Connor Libis had 20 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Roach-Valandra had 15 points and nine rebounds.  Sam Palmer finished with nine points, four assists, and three blocked shots.

The Quarriers had four players finish in double figures.  Brayden Pankonen had a game-high 23 points with two rebounds and two steals.  Colin Rentz, named the game’s MVP, had 22 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.  Carter Nelson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds plus two blocked shots.  Coby Maeschen also finished with 10 points and had seven rebounds.

The Dell Rapids Cardinal basketball teams held the first games of the season on Tuesday, December 15th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The girls and boys held a double-header against the Michell Christian Golden Eagles.

The girls found themselves trailing 3-0 in the opening moments of the game, but that was the only lead the Golden Eagles would have.  St Mary grabbed control of the game midway through the first quarter as they went ahead 15-9 by the quarter break.  The Cardinals pushed the lead to 10 points by halftime at 28-18.

The defense for the Cardinals was the difference in the game as they held Mitchell Christian to single digit points in each of the four quarters.  The Golden Eagles, again, only got nine points in the third quarter, and then St Mary held them to just five points in the fourth quarter for the season-opening win, 50-32.

Ella Heinitz finished the night with a team-high 15 points and four steals.  Ella Griffin added 12 points and eight rebounds.  Courtney Brown nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds along with three steals.  Addyson Gilbert and Brianna Griffin both finished with five points each.

The Cardinal boys went on a 34-point run to open the game.  St Mary held Mitchell Christian scoreless until near the midway point of the second quarter.  The opening run was all St Mary would need as they would cruise to a 67-26 season-opening victory.

Sam Palmer had a game-high 16 points with two rebounds and two assists.  Connor Libis finished with 14 points, five assists, and four rebounds.  Max Herber had 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Connar Kangas ended with nine points.

The Cardinal girls (1-0) will host Colman-Egan on Thursday, December 17th.  The boys (1-0) will also hos Colman-Egan, but on Friday, December 18th.  Both teams will recognize their seniors during their respective games.

Two Cardinal Basketball Players Commit to College Programs

October 16, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Two senior players on the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team have committed to play college basketball next season.  Sam Palmer recently committed to Mount Marty University in Yankton, SD, and Connor Libis committed to Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA earlier this year.  With both of the schools playing in the GPAC, these teammates will get plenty of time facing each other in the coming years.

“One of my favorite things about Mount Marty is the atmosphere down there.  Walking around campus, everyone was super welcoming and friendly.  I talked to a couple staff members who were helpful with the academic side of things.  I feel liek Mount Marty has a lot of momentum going for them right now, and I will love being apart of it,” said Palmer.

“I chose Briar Cliff because it was the best fit for me.  I really like the coaching staff and everything that they have built there.  I want to help add to their basketball legacy.  I loved the Catholic Christian aspect as well,” said Libis about choosing Briar Cliff.

Before these two face off against one another in GPAC games in the future, they have one more season for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals.

“I am really looking forward to this upcoming season.  A lot of our younger guys have put in work and stepped up.  Everyone has made improvements from last season.  With Ashaun coming over, and his presence is going to help our team as well.  And as a team working on our strengths and weaknesses during the off season, we will be set for a great season,” Palmer said.

Libis mentioned that he is looking forward to finishing what the team hasn’t done yet, making it to the state tournament.  He also said that they need to still take one game at a time and embrace each practice and game this final senior season.

The first basketball game for the Cardinals is scheduled for December 15th against Mitchell Christian at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 33% (19-58) in the game, 23% (5-22) from three-point area, and 55% (6-11) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 22 team rebounds.  Colman-Egan, however, shot 54% (22-41) from the field, 54% (7-13) from three-point area, and 64% (16-25) from the free-throw line.  The Hawks also had 38 team rebounds.
