The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls traveled to Salem to play the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars on Tuesday, January 5th in their fifth game away from home.  The Cougars were able to pull away from the Quarriers for a 56-41 win.

Controversial No Call Results in Game Winning Shot Against Quarrier Boys

January 4, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

A controversial no-call on a travel led to a game-winning shot in the final seconds by the Western Christian Wolfpack to beat the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys 65-64 at the Sanford Pentagon Classic on Saturday, January 2nd.

The Wolfpack had an inbound along the sideline near half court with just :10 to play in the game trailing by a point.  After the inbound pass was received, it appeared a couple of steps were taken prior to a dribble, but no travel call was made.  The Wolfpack were able to get a shot to go through the hoop just before the buzzer sounded to steal the win.

The game was a close battle all game long between the Quarriers and Wolfpack.  Western Christian held a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter 20-18.  Dell Rapids took the lead into the locker room at halftime by a score of 33-32.

The Wolfpack was able to grab the lead back at the end of the third quarter and led 51-50 heading into the final quarter of play.  The Quarriers held a three-point lead at 64-61 after Coby Maeschen made two free throws with about :40 to play.  After a Wolfpack basket to cut the lead to 64-63, they were forced to foul with about :15 to play.  Dell Rapids missed the front-end of a one-and-one, and Western Christian grabbed the defensive rebound and called timeout after crossing half court to set up the game winning play.

The Quarriers had one more chance for a buzzer-beating shot.  They had to throw the ball the length of the court, but that pass was unable to be handled and couldn’t take a shot before the buzzer sounded.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 47% (23-49) from the field, 40% (8-20) on three-point shots, but and 71% (10-14) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Carter Nelson had a team-high 16 points along with seven rebounds.  Connor Rentz had 14 points.  Brayden Pankonen had 13 points, two assists, and two steals.  Colin Rentz had nine points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists.

Dell Rapids (4-1) will host the Canton C-Hawks in a double-header with the girls on Thursday, January 7th.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

The atmosphere was slightly different than last year in the Dell Rapids versus Dell Rapids St Mary boys basketball game, but the battle was just as intense.  Last season’s Entringer Classic battle was held in Brookings to almost full gym.  This year the game was held in Colman with fan restrictions, but the Quarriers and Cardinals put on another great game for the fans on Thursday, December 31st.

The score remained close throughout much of the game before the Quarriers pulled away in the final minutes for a 71-56 victory.

The Quarriers opened the game with a 6-0 before the Cardinals were able to take their first shot of the game.  Dell Rapids ended the first quarter leading 16-8.  St Mary chipped away at the lead in the second quarter and pulled within a point at 22-21 with 2:15 to play in the half.  Dell Rapids was able to push the lead back to four points by halftime at 30-26.

The Cardinals again got the game within a point early in the third quarter.  A three-point shot by Ashaun Roach-Valandra with 5:50 to go in the quarter made the score 32-31 in favor of the Quarriers.  Dell Rapids was again able to respond and slowly pushed their lead to six points at 46-40 heading into the final quarter. St Mary went on an 8-4 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to get within two points at 50-48, but the Quarriers answered with a 10-0 for their largest lead of the game at 60-48.  They continued with that momentum the rest of the game for the 71-56 win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 33% (16-48) from the field, 30% (8-27) from three-point area, and 73% (16-22) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 24 team rebounds, nine assists, and 13 turnovers.  Dell Rapids finished 52% (26-50) from the field, 31% (5-16) from three-point area, and 78% (14-18) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 29 team rebounds, 17 steals, and 11 turnovers.

Two players finished in double figures for the Cardinals.  Connor Libis had 20 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Roach-Valandra had 15 points and nine rebounds.  Sam Palmer finished with nine points, four assists, and three blocked shots.

The Quarriers had four players finish in double figures.  Brayden Pankonen had a game-high 23 points with two rebounds and two steals.  Colin Rentz, named the game’s MVP, had 22 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.  Carter Nelson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds plus two blocked shots.  Coby Maeschen also finished with 10 points and had seven rebounds.
