St Mary was 40% (19-47) from the field, 45% (9-20) from three-point area, and 68% (19-28) from the free-throw line.  The Dolphins were 47% (24-51) from the field, just 19% (3-16) from three-point area, and 50% (7-14) from the free-throw line.  Deubrook held the rebounding advantage at 31-22.

Early Lead Fuels Mustang Boys Win

January 27, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

A quick start and an early lead fueled a 75-67 win for the Tri-Valley Mustangs over the Canton C-Hawks on Tuesday, January 26th.

Tri-Valley got out to a double-digit lead early in the game, and that was enough for the Mustangs to hold on for the win.  Tri-Valley led 24-15 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 15 points at 43-28 by halftime.

Canton made spurts throughout the second half, but Tri-Valley was able to respond.  After cutting into the lead in the third quarter, the C-Hawks couldn’t stop the Mustang offense as Tri-Valley, again, led by 15 at the end of the third quarter, 64-49.  The C-Hawks made a late run, but it was too late as Tri-Valley secured the win.

The Mustangs shot 45% (27-60) from the field, 42% (10-24) from three-point area, and 55% (11-20) from the free-throw line.  They also held the rebounding advantage at 37-23.

Four players finished in double figures.  Cory Mcdonald had 19 points and five rebounds.  Riley Haynes had 16 points and five rebounds.  Nick Haas finished with 14 points.  Tyler Johnson added 10 points and five rebounds.  Owen Besmer finished one point short of a double-double.  He had nine points with 10 rebounds and four assists.

Tri-Valley (4-6) will be at Elk Point to play the Huskies on Thursday, January 28th.

Canton Stuns Tri-Valley Girls

January 27, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Canton C-Hawks stunned the Tri-Valley Mustangs when Paige Schroedermeier hit the game-winning buzzer-beater from the free-throw line to give Canton a 49-47 road victory on Tuesday, January 26th.

Both teams went on scoring runs in the first three quarters, while most of the fourth quarter was back-and-forth.  Tri-Valley had the first advantage outscoring Canton 16-9 in the first quarter.  The C-Hawks reversed that trend and outscored the Mustangs 16-6 in the second quarter for a 25-22 halftime lead.

The Mustangs started the second half on a 10-2 run and led 32-27 with 3:45 to go in the third quarter.  Canton closed the quarter on an 8-5 run to cut into the lead.  Tri-Valley led 37-35 heading into the final quarter.  The lead changed hands multiple times, and Canton had a 47-46 lead with 1:30 to play.  Tri-Valley tied the game from the free-throw line with :45 on the clock.  The game-winning shot came off of a Tri-Valley turnover for Canton.

The Mustangs shot 32% (13-41) from the field, 18% (3-17) from three-point area, and 62% (18-29) from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley also out rebounded the C-Hawks 39-25, but the Mustangs turned the ball over 24 times in the game.

Kaitlyn Mohnen had 17 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Steph Buchmann finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  Paige Jewett had eight points.  Tabor Teel had four points, 15 rebounds, and five steals.

Tri-Valley (5-6) will travel to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Thursday, January 28th.
