Cardinal Girls Have No Trouble with Bearcats

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team had no issues with the Freeman Academy/Marion Bearcats on Thursday, February 4th.  The Cardinals won their tenth game of the season after beating the Bearcats 50-19.

St Mary jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the first quarter and led 14-7 at the break.  The Cardinals then went on a 17-0 run to start the second quarter and never looked back.   St Mary led 35-12 at halftime and 46-15 at the end of the third quarter.

Three players finished in double figures in a balanced scoring attack for the Cardinals.  Ella Heinitz had 12 points, three assists, and two rebounds.  Ella Griffin finished with 10 points and five rebounds.  Madala Hanson also had 10 points along with two assists and two steals.  Addyson Gilbert and Karlie Klein both had four points each.  Sydney Klein finished with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 36% (20-56) from the field, 26% (6-23) from three-point area, and 57% (4-7) from the free-throw line.  The Bearcats finished 25% (8-32) from the field, 0-4 from three-point area, and 3-6 from the free-throw line.  St Mary also held the turnover advantage at 8 to 21 and the rebounding advantage at 32 to 17.

St Mary (10-4) will travel to Arlington on Monday, February 8th.

Another Second Quarter Rally Sparks Win for Cardinal Boys

For the second game in a row the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys used a second quarter rally to spark a win.  The Cardinals went on a 15-0 run to start the second quarter against Lake Preston Divers to help them to a 79-56 win on Thursday, February 4th.

The game was fairly even for the other three quarters of the game.  St Mary had a slim two-point lead after the first quarter at 15-13.  The Cardinals, after their 15-0 run to start the second quarter, pushed the lead to 30-13.  The first half ended with St Mary leading 39-21.

The Cardinals were able to extend their lead to 25 points in the third quarter at 52-27.  The Divers went on a 10-0 run of their own and cut the lead to 52-37.  St Mary entered the fourth quarter leading 56-38.  The Cardinals maintained their lead and outscored Lake Preston 23-18 in the final quarter. 

St Mary shot 42% (29-69) from the field, 32% (10-31) from three-point area, and 65% (11-17) from the free-throw line.  Lake Preston was 32% (19-60) from the field, 6% (1-18) from three-point area, and 71% (17-24) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals out-rebounded the Divers 39-33 and forced 18 turnovers.

Four players finished in double figures for the Cardinals.  Connor Libis had 25 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.  Ashaun Roach-Valandra had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.  John Pica had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Sam Palmer finished with 12 points, five steals, four blocks, three assists, and two rebounds.

The Cardinals (12-3) will travel to Arlington on Monday, February 8th for their next game.

Flandreau Offense Hot in Win over Quarrier Boys

The Flandreau Flier offense simply couldn’t be stopped on Tuesday, February 2nd.  Flandreau shot 65% (33-51) from the field, 63% (10-16) from three-point area, and a perfect 3-3 from the free-throw line in a 79-67 win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers.

The Fliers got hot to start the game and kept it going from start to finish.  Flandreau led by as many as eight points in the first quarter and ended the quarter leading 21-14.  The lead was back to eight points at 28-20 with 5:00 to play in the first half, but the Quarriers went on a 7-0 run to pull within a point at 28-27 over the next minute.  That was as close as Dell Rapids would get. 

Flandreau went on a 13-0 run in three and a half minutes and end the first half leading 41-30.  The Fliers pushed the lead to 17 points in the third quarter, but Dell Rapids got it down to 14 at 62-48 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Quarriers got the lead down to single digits at 71-63 with 3:35 to go in the game, but Flandreau went on an 8-0 over the next two minutes to secure the victory.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 48% (24-50) from the field, 44% (8-18) from three-point area and 92% (11-12) from the free-throw line. 

Brayden Pankonen had 21 points in the game.  Connor Rentz finished with 16 points and three rebounds.  Colin Rentz had 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals.  Chase LeBrun led Flandreau, and all scorers, with 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  Liam Streitz had 20 points and six rebounds.  Tash Lunday finished with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Dell Rapids (9-4) will travel to Tri-Valley on Thursday, February 4th.

Flandreau Defense Leads to Win over Quarrier Girls

Playing on back-to-back nights, the Dell Rapids Quarriers ran into a tough defensive Flandreau Fliers on Tuesday, February 2nd.  Flandreau took advantage of 25 Dell Rapids turnovers, winning the game 67-46 in Flandreau.

The Quarriers held a four-point lead very early in the game.  Mady Vanoverbeke made back-to-back three-point shots, and Dell Rapids led 6-2 with 6:40 to go in the first quarter.  The two teams were tied 11-11 with 2:00, but Flandreau held a 15-13 lead at the quarter break.  The Quarriers opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run and led again, 18-17, with 6:30 left in the half.  Flandreau then got hot from three-point area, going 4-4 in the quarter, and held a 36-26 halftime lead.

The Flier defense then shut the Quarrier offense down in third quarter.  Dell Rapids was held to just seven points, and Flandreau built a 53-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Fliers maintained that big of a lead throughout the final quarter.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 33% (17-52) from the field, 23% (6-26) from three-point area, and just 40% (6-15) from the free-throw line.  Flandreau shot 44% (27-61) from the field, 38% (6-16) from three-point area, and 50% (7-14) from the free-throw line.

Jayme Schmidt had 15 points to lead the Quarriers in scoring.  Vanoverbeke added 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Haileigh Barnhart finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.  Three players finished in double figures for Flandreau.  Claire Sheppard had 21 points and five rebounds.  Maria Parsley added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Bella Pavlis had 10 points and five rebounds.

Dell Rapids (3-12) will travel to Tri-Valley High School on Thursday, February 4th.

Second Quarter Rally Lifts Cardinal Boys to Victory

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals used a 16-0 run in the second quarter to fuel a 64-51 win over the Garretson Blue Dragons in Garretson on Monday, February 1st.  The win extended the current winning streak to six games for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals and Blue Dragons played even for three quarters of the game.  The opening quarter was back-and-forth and ended in a 13-13 tie.  Garretson had a one point lead at 16-15 with seven minutes to go in the second quarter, but St Mary then went on a 16-0 run and ended the first half leading 31-18.

That run in the second quarter proved to be the difference in the game.  Garretson cut the lead to single digits in the third quarter as St Mary led 50-41 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals were able to keep the lead and extend it back to double digits in the fourth quarter.

St Mary shot 39% (22-57) from the field, 23% (6-26) from three-point area, and 74% (14-19) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals out-rebounded the Blue Dragons 43-28.

Ashaun Roach-Valandra finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals.  Connor Libis had 13 points and five rebounds.  Max Herber added 13 points and nine rebounds.  Sam Palmer also had double figures with 12 points, six rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.

The Cardinal (11-3) will host Lake Preston on Thursday, February 4th.  The varsity game will tip-off about 6:00 p.m. and can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Flex Muscles Against Baltic

After trailing 7-0 in the first couple of minutes of the game, the Dell Rapids Quarriers went on a 19-4 run and never looked back in a 63-43 win over the Baltic Bulldogs on Monday, February 1st.

The Quarriers played an aggressive, physical style of defense all night long which caused problems for the Bulldogs.  Dell Rapids forced 25 turnovers, 13 of those coming off steals.  Dell Rapids also played aggressively on offense, getting themselves to the foul line 23 times.  The Quarriers were 15-23 from the free-throw line, while Baltic was just 6-7.

The Bulldogs scored the first seven points of the game, five of those from Sami Polzin, for an early 7-0 lead.  The Quarriers then went on a 19-4 run the remainder of the quarter and led 19-11 after the first quarter.  Baltic cut into the lead in the second quarter, but Dell Rapids still led 31-26 at halftime.

The Quarriers grabbed complete control of the game midway through the third quarter.  Holding a five-point lead at 36-31, Dell Rapids went on a 12-4 run for a 48-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids continued to build on their lead in the fourth quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 47% (21-45) from the field, 33% (6-18) from three-point area, and 65% (15-23) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had a total of 24 team rebounds, 14 team assists, and 13 team steals.

Zoey Hilmoe had 16 points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Mady Vanoverbeke had 15 points.  Claire Wynja had 12 points.  Haileigh Barnhart finished with nine points, seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists.  Becky Dorn had three points and five rebounds.  Baltic was led by Polzin with 17 points and seven rebounds.  Kylie Schneider had 10 points, and Cami Artz had eight points and seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (3-11) will travel to Flandreau to play the Fliers.  Tip-off for the varsity game is scheduled for about 6:30 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids Wrestling Places 5th in Brookings

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed fifth at the Les Tlustos-Brookings Invitational on Saturday, January 30th.  Nine teams participated in this year’s tournament.

The Quarriers finished with 125.5 points.  Harrisburg won the team title with 225.5 points.  Pierre was second with 210.5 points, and Madison was third with 142.0 points.

Jacob Vogel won the 132-pound weight class.  Andrew Weiland, Zach McKee, and Brayden Gee all finished second.  Carson Roach and Weston Mason both had third place finishes.  Quinn Carr had a fifth place finish, and Gabe Clark finished sixth in his weight class.

The Quarriers will be in Parkston on Thursday, February 4th.

Quarrier Boys Win Big at Dak-12/NEC Conference Clash

After a slow start in the first four minutes of the game, the Dell Rapids Quarriers found their offensive rhythm and cruised to a 78-46 win over the Tiospa Zina Wambdi at the Dak-12/NEC Conference Clash in Madison on Saturday, January 30th.

The Wambdi took advantage of the Quarriers slow start and got out to a 9-5 lead with 4:15 to play in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids then closed out the quarter on a 14-5 run to lead 19-14 at the break.  The Quarriers then took advantage of a cold-shooting second quarter for Tiospa Zina.  The Wambdi went 1-17 from the field in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids outscored Tiospa Zina 18-3 for a 37-17 halftime lead.

The Quarriers continued to build their lead in the third quarter.  They extended the lead to 63-36 heading into the fourth quarter, and then scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to lead 66-36 and trigger the running clock for the rest of the game.

Dell Rapids shot 47% (27-57) from the field, 36% (9-25) from three-point area, and 71% (15-21) from the free-throw line.  Tiospa Zina finished 33% (18-54) from the field, 20% (3-15) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids out-rebounded the Wambdi 35-26 in the game.

Brayden Pankonen had 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists.  Colin Rentz finished with 18 points, six rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Carter Nelson added 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocks.  Landon Ruesink also had double figures with 11 points and five rebounds.  Connor Rentz had nine points, eight assists, and four rebounds.  Coby Maeschen had a team-high eight rebounds as well as two assists.

Cardinal Girls Split Pair of Games on Back-to-Back Nights

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team split a pair of games on back-to-back nights on Thursday, January 28th and Friday, January 29th.  Both games were on the road for the Cardinals.  St Mary defeated the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, 55-38.  The Cardinals then fell to the Deubrook Dolphins 64-51 on Friday.

St Mary built a 20 point lead in the first half and that was a big enough lead to get the victory over the Cubs.  The Cardinals led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter.  The score was 28-8 with 1:45 to play in the second quarter before the Cubs scored the final five points for a 28-13 halftime lead for St Mary.

The Cardinals kept the lead at 15 by the end of the third quarter.  St Mary held a 36-21 advantage heading into the final quarter.  The Cubs went on a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter to make the score 36-27.  The lead was down to seven points at 38-31 with 5:05 to play, but the Cardinals went on a 16-2 run to make the score 54-33 with 1:35 in the game to secure the win.

Ella Heinitz had 22 points, six rebounds, five steals, and three assists.  Ella Griffin had 11 points, three steals, and two rebounds.  Brianna Griffin had six points, and Courtney Brown had five points, six rebounds, and four steals.

St Mary had the lead through the first two quarters against Deubrook, but the Dolphins got hot in the second half to take the win.

In a fast-paced, exciting first quarter, the two teams combined for seven three-point shots and 40 points.  The Cardinals led 22-18 at the end of the first quarter.  The two teams cooled off significantly in the second quarter.  Both teams scored just six points each, and the Cardinals led 28-24.

St Mary’s last lead of the game came with 5:45 to play in the third quarter, 33-31.  The Dolphins outscored the Cardinals 14-8 the rest of the quarter to lead 45-41 heading into the fourth quarter.  Deubrook scored 19 more points in the fourth quarter and made free-throws late in the game for the win.

Heinitz finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  E. Griffin had 10 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.  Madala Hanson had nine points, and Sydney Klein and Karlie Klein both had seven points each.

Late Run Gives Vermillion Win over Quarrier Boys

A 10-2 run late in the fourth quarter gave the Vermillion Tanagers a 68-66 win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, January 28th in Vermillion.

The game was expected to be a close battle between two top five Class A teams, and they delivered.  The Tanagers went on a 14-6 run after the game was tied 9-9 with 4:15 to play in the first quarter.  Vermillion lead 23-15 heading into the second quarter.  The Quarriers cut the lead in half by halftime at 41-37.

The second half was back-and-forth and started with a fun third quarter.  The two teams traded baskets all quarter long, and Dell Rapids held a 56-54 lead going into the fourth quarter.  Vermillion scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, but the Quarriers responded with a 5-0 run to lead 61-58 with 5:50 to go in the game.  Dell Rapids was then held scoreless until :29 to go in the game.  By that time Vermillion built a 65-61 lead.  Brayden Pankonen pulled the Quarriers within two at 65-63 with two free-throws, but the Tanagers put the game out of reach from the free-throw line with :05 to go at 68-63.  Colin Rentz made a three-point shot at the buzzer.

The Quarriers shot 44% (24-55) from the field, 28% (5-18) from three-point area, and 65% (13-20) from the free-throw line.  Vermillion was 48% (24-50) from the field, 25% (3-12) from three-point area, and 89% (17-19) from the free-throw line.

Colin Rentz had 25 points and 11 rebounds.  Pankonen had 10 points.  Landon Ruesink had nine points, four assist, and two rebounds.  Carter Nelson had seven points, and Connor Rentz had six points.
