Strong Defense Key to St Mary’s Fourth Straight Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal defense forced 34 turnovers and had 21 steals to lift St Mary to a 55-25 win over the Adrian-Ellsworth Dragons at the DVC Classic in Colman on Saturday, January 15th.

Both teams went on runs in the first quarter.  The Dragons went on a small 4-0 run after the Cardinals made the game-opening three pointer.  St Mary responded with an 8-0 run for an 11-4 lead.  Adrian-Ellsworth got within a point by the end of the quarter, 13-12, thanks to an 8-2 run.

That’s when the Cardinal defense took over the game.  St Mary outscored the Dragons 24-9 in the second quarter for a 37-21 halftime lead.  The Cardinals then held the Dragons scoreless in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 43-21 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Dragons were only able to score four more points while the Cardinals added another 12 points in the quarter for the win.

St Mary shot 34% (22-65) from the field, 33% (6-18) on three pointers, and 36% (5-14) from the free-throw line.  The Dragons shot 22% (9-41) from the field, 0-5 on three pointers, and 7-8 from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson led the scoring efforts with 16 points.  She also had five steals, two rebounds, and an assist.  Ella Griffin had 15 points, three steals, three assists, and a rebound.  Addyson Gilbert added 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.  Sydney Klein finished with four points, seven rebounds, four steals, and an assist.

The Cardinals (7-3) have won four in a row and will travel to Castlewood on Tuesday, January 18th.

St Mary Girls Win Third Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team won their third straight game on Thursday, January 13th.  The Cardinals traveled to Ramona to play the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders and came home with a 48-32 victory.

The Cardinal defense held the Raiders to no field goals in the first quarter and allowed only three points from free-throw line.  St Mary led 10-3 after the first quarter.  The Raiders scored the first four points of the second quarter to pull within three points, 10-7, with 6:52 to play in the half.  The Cardinals, though, held the Raiders to just seven points the rest of the quarter for a 28-14 halftime lead.

St Mary continued to hold a double-digit lead throughout the second half.  Their lead grew by one point, 37-22, at the end of the third quarter.  The Cardinals scored the first three points of the fourth quarter for a 40-22 lead, their largest of the night, with 7:15 to play.  The Raiders did cut the lead to twelve, 44-32, with 2:15 to go, but St Mary scored the final four points of the game.

Madala Hanson had 24 points and five steals to lead the way for St Mary.  Sydney Klein had nine points and six rebounds.  Addyson Gilbert finished with five points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Courtney Brown had four points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

The Cardinals shot 39% (21-54) as a team in the game.  They were 4-22 on three pointers and 2-11 from the free-throw line.  The Raiders finished 26% (11-42) shooting, 2-7 from three-point area, and 50% (8-16) from the free-throw line.  The St Mary defense forced 27 Raider turnovers.

St Mary (6-3) will play Adrian-Ellsworth, MN at the DVC Classic in Colman on Saturday, January 15th at 11:30 a.m.

Quarrier Boys Score Big Win over Sioux Falls Christian

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team got a big win at home over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 11th.  The Quarriers ended the game on an 11-2 run for a 66-57 win.

Dell Rapids led for most of the game.  The Quarriers led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.  Holding just a one point lead, 23-22, with 4:00 to go in the second quarter, Dell Rapids ended the half on a 13-4 run for a 36-26 halftime lead.  The Chargers cut into that gap throughout the third quarter.  Dell Rapids held just a 48-44 lead heading into the final quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian finally got the game tied 55-55 with two minutes to play, but Dell Rapids went on an 11-2 run for the victory.

The Quarriers shot 54% (20-37) from the field, 63% (10-16) on three pointers, and 80% (16-20) from the free-throw line.  The Chargers were 37% (21-57) shooting in the game, 14% (2-14) from three-point area, and 68% (13-19) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 21 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Jack Henry had 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks.  Landon Ruesink added nine points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Camden Justice finished with eight points.  Shane Stone had six points, and Aiden Boechler had five points.

Dell Rapids (5-2) will travel to Parker on Monday, January 17th.

Cardinal Girls Hold off Elks

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals held off an Elkton-Lake Benton rally for a 64-57 win at home on Tuesday, January 11th.

The Cardinals built a quick 10-point lead after the first quarter at 19-9.  The lead grew to 34-21 by halftime.  The Elks started making a run in the third quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton outscored St Mary 21-16 to cut the lead to 50-42 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals were able to hold off the Elks for the win.

St Mary shot 42% (24-57) from the field, 19% (4-21) on three pointers, and 71% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  The Elks shot 47% (24-52) from the field, 1-3 from three-point area, and 50% (8-16) from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson had 18 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Sydney Klein had 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Courtney Brown added 10 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  Addyson Gilbert finished with eight points, two rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  Ella Griffin had six points and five assists.

The Cardinals (5-3) will be at Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Thursday, January 13th.

Quarrier Wrestling Beat by Madison

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team was defeated by the Madison Bulldogs in Madison on Tuesday, January 11th.  Madison won by a score of 60-22.

John Mortrude, Weston Mason, Quinn Carr, and Aiden Geraets all earned wins on the night.

The Quarriers will be at Harrisburg on Saturday, January 15th.

Lennox Survives Quarrier Girls

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls nearly overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half against the Lennox Orioles on Monday, January 10th.  The Quarriers trailed by 13 points early in the second half, but the Orioles held for a 46-42 win.

Lennox led by two points at the end of the first quarter, 10-8.  The Orioles pushed that lead to 10 points by halftime at 29-19.  Lennox scored the first three points of the third quarter for a 32-19, but the Quarriers did not allow another point to the Orioles the rest of the quarter.  That allowed Dell Rapids to go on a 10-0 the rest of the quarter to pull within three, 32-29.

The Quarriers scored the first basked of the fourth quarter, making the score 32-31.  Lennox, however, went on a 13-4 run to push their lead to 45-35 with 2:30 to play in the game.  Dell Rapids had one more run in them.  The Quarriers scored seven in a row cutting the lead to 45-42 with a minute to play.  The Lennox defense stopped a game-tying play with a steal, and made a free-throw to hold on for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 25% (14-57) from the field, 1-16 on three pointers, and 81% (13-16) from the free-throw line.  Lennox was 32% (12-37) from the field, 35% (6-17) from three-point area, and 80% (16-20) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids’ defense forced 27 Lennox turnovers in the game, 18 of those on steals.

Haileigh Barnhart had 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.  Zoey Hilmoe had nine points, three rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.  Jayme Schmidt finished with eight points.  Liz Price added seven points and four rebounds.

JV Results

The Quarrier JV team lost a heartbreaker on Monday night to the Lennox Oriole JV team 24-26.  Shelby Welbig had nine points and four rebounds.  Jenna Miller had eight points, three steals, and two rebounds.  Elly Olson finished with five points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Clara Justice had two points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  Tori Malsam had three rebounds, and Kerrigan Kindopp had two steals.

Cardinal Boys Rally Falls Short Against Elkton-Lake Benton

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys rally in the fourth quarter came up short as the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks defeated the Cardinals 45-39 on Monday, January 10th.

St Mary had a 6-3 lead in the first quarter, but the Elks held a 14-10 advantage after the quarter ended.  The game remained close throughout the second quarter.  The Elks still held a lead, 21-19, at halftime.  St Mary tied the game 23-23 in the first thirty seconds of the third quarter, but was held to just three points the rest of the quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton led 33-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

That lead grew to 41-28 midway through the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals tried to make a furious comeback.  A steal by Dylan Mathis and three-pointer by Ty Brown with :36 left in the game cut the Elks lead to 43-39.  That was as close as the Cardinals would get as the Elks made two free throws to close out the game.

The Cardinals shot 28% (13-47) from the field, 20% (3-15) from three-point area, and 53% (10-19) from the free-throw line.  The Elks finished the game shooting 33% (18-54), 18% (2-11) from three-point area, and 58% (7-12) from the free-throw line.

CJ Smith led the team with nine points and five rebounds.  Nic Gaspar had eight points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.  John Pica had eight points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Ty Brown added seven points and two blocks.  Mathis finished with five points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Dell Rapids Bowling Drops Match to Brandon Valley

After taking a break for a couple of weeks during the Christmas holiday, the Dell Rapids high school club bowling team was back in action on Friday, January 7th at Eastway Bowl.  Dell Rapids lost 0-3 to Brandon Valley.  The Lynx won by scores of 840-780, 872-720, and 987-713.

Ashton Schaaf had the high three-game score of 546 (182, 187, 177).  Caden Bitzer had a 386 series (140, 137, 109).  Ryder VanZee finished with a 360 (114, 124, 122).  Zander Heathcote had a 354 (140, 108, 106).  OScar Anderson had a 301 series (103, 85, 113), and Noah Larson finished with a 266 (101, 79, 86).

Adaya Penning was the lone varsity girls bowler for Dell Rapids.  She finished with game scores of 80, 83, and 112.

Dell Rapids will host West Central at Pinz on Friday, January 14th for their next match.

Quarrier Wrestlers 8th at Dan Pansch Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed eighth at the Dan Pansch Invitational on Saturday, January 8th in Brandon.  Dell Rapids finished with 63.5 points.  Brandon Valley won the team title with 259.5 points.  West Central was second, and Tea placed third.

In the girls brackets, Hannah Jensen won the 106G division with a 3-0 record.  Mikayla Hight finished second in the 132G with a 2-1 record.  Bailey Credeur was fourth at 132G with an 0-3 record.  Janessa Nelson finished sixth in the 142G with 1-3 record.  Rylee Bird (126G) finished 0-2, and Bella Bietz (142G) also finished 0-2.

Quinn Carr had a third place finish in the 182-weight class finishing with a 3-1 record on the day.  Aiden Geraets also had a third place finish in the 195-pound class with a 3-1 record.  Hunter Nelson was fifth in the 152-pound class with a 2-2 record.  Mason Stubbe placed fifth in the 170-pound weight class with a 2-2 record.  John Mortrude placed sixth in the 126-pound class with a 1-3 record.  Kaiden Lowman (145-pound) finished 0-2 on the day.

The Quarriers will be in Madison on Tuesday, January 11th.

St Mary Boys Stop Redhawk Fourth Quarter Rally

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team stopped the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks from completing a fourth quarter comeback.  The Cardinals held their ground for a 53-47 win on Friday, January 7th.

After a close first quarter that ended with the Cardinals leading 9-8, St Mary was able to grow their lead in the second quarter.  The Cardinals took an eight-point lead into the locker room at halftime, 23-15.  St Mary continued to add to the lead in the third quarter as well.  The Cardinals had a double digit, 38-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Redhawks chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter getting it down to four points, 47-43, with 1:29 to play.  Nic Gaspar and Dylan Mathis made back-to-back layups for the Cardinals to push the lead to 51-43 and put the game away.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 40% (19-47) from the field, 25% (4-16) from three-point area, and 46% (11-23) from the free-throw line.  Estelline/Hendricks shot 34% (17-50) in the game, 20% (4-20) on three pointers, and 9-10 from the free-throw line.

Mathis had 15 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  John Pica finished with nine points, 12 rebounds, and two steals.  Ty Brown also had nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Gaspar added eight points, five rebounds, and three steals.  CJ Smith had seven points, two rebounds, and two assists.

St Mary (5-2) will host Elkton/Lake Benton on Monday, January 10th.
