St Mary Girls Survive in Baltic for Win

Playing in their second straight day, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls survived the Baltic Bulldogs for a 66-61 win on Tuesday, February 8th in Baltic.

The Cardinals got out to a big lead in the first quarter.  They led 27-9 by the quarter break.  Baltic made a big run in the second quarter, outscoring St Mary 22-9 to cut the lead to 36-31 at halftime.  The Bulldogs got the lead down to one point heading into the fourth quarter, 46-45.  St Mary went on a 10-4 run to start the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 56-49 with 5:55 to go in the game.  The Bulldogs pulled within two points again, 60-58, with 2:00 go.  St Mary pushed the lead back to six points, 64-58, with just under a minute to play.  Baltic was only able to get within three, 64-61, before St Mary sealed the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds.

St Mary shot 44% (22-50) from the field, 30% (7-23) from three-point area, and 65% (15-23) from the free-throw line.  The Bulldogs finished 47% (22-47) shooting, 2-8 from three-point area, and 56% (15-27) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Madala Hanson had 17 points, five rebounds, and four steals.  Ella Griffin finished with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Maya Heinitz had 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

The Cardinals will play McCook Central/Montrose in Salem on Friday, February 11th at 11:30 a.m. at the DWU Classic.

Quarrier Boys Score Big Road Win over Titans

In a big match-up between two teams with an 11-4 record, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys earned a tough road win over the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 8th.  The Quarriers pulled away late for an 80-68 victory.

The game went as expected with back-and-forth battles all night long.  Dell Rapids had the early advantage, 16-13, at the end of the first quarter.  The Quarriers slowly built a seven point lead by the end of the first half and led 34-27 at halftime.  Their lead grew to 13 points, 46-33, with 5:25 to play in the third quarter.  The Titans made a run and cut the lead down to 48-46 with 1:20 left in the quarter.  The Quarriers pushed the lead back to five points, 54-49, by the start of the fourth quarter.

Mt Vernon/Plankinton started the fourth quarter on a little bit of a run.  They cut the five-point lead down to two points, 58-56, with 6:00 to go in the game.  The lead was still only two points, 62-60, with 4:30 on the clock.  Dell Rapids then went on a 7-0 run to lead 69-60 with 2:00 to go in the game.  The Quarriers made some big three-point shots and got some break-away layups after steals to seal the victory.

Dell Rapids shot 48% (30-63) in the game, 40% (10-25) from three-point area, and 53% (10-19) from the free-throw line.  The Titans were a very good 59% (27-46) from the field, 1-4 on three pointers, and 72% (13-18) from the free-throw line.  The Quarrier defense, however, caused problems for the Titans as they turned it over 25 times, 17 on Dell Rapids steals.

Brayden Pankonen had 31 points, seven steals, and six assists.  Jack Henry had 25 points, three rebound, and three steals.  Camden Justice added eight points and five rebounds.  Landon Ruesink had six points, four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Shane Stone finished with five points and nine rebounds.

The Quarriers (12-4) will travel to Dakota Valley on Friday, February 11th.

Quarrier Girls Beat by Tough Titan Team

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team faced a tough road game on Tuesday, February 8th.  The Quarriers traveled to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans.  The Titans, one of the top teams in Class A, defeated Dell Rapids 63-33.

Dell Rapids held tough in the opening quarter.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton got a little more separation by the end of the first quarter and led 17-8.  The Titan offense scored 21 points in the second quarter and extended their lead to 38-16 at halftime.  The two offenses struggled to find rhythm in the third quarter.  The teams combined for just 13 total points, and the Titans led 46-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Quarriers shot 25% (13-51) in the game, 12% (3-26) from three-point area, and 4-8 from the free-throw line.  The Titans finished 54% (28-52) shooting, 3-8 from three-point area, and 4-11 from the free-throw line.

Alli De Stigter had a team-high eight points along with four rebounds and two assists.  Jenna Miller had five points, three rebounds, and three steals.  Jayme Schmidt finished with four points and six rebounds.  Maggie Schmidt also had four points along with two rebounds.  Claire Wynja had three points and six rebounds.  Zoey Hilmoe and Elly Olson both had three points as well.

Dell Rapids (3-16) will finish the regular season at Dakota Valley on Friday, February 11th.

JV Results

After a sluggish first quarter to start the JV contest, the Quarrier defense put a strangle hold on their hosts en route to a 38-24 win.  A very active and tenacious defense held Mt Vernon/Plankinton to only four points in the second and third quarters, while building a 22-15 lead going into the fourth period.  Solid team defense created several easy scoring opportunities as Dell rapids put the game out of reach scoring 18 points in the final quarter.  The win improves the JV record to 9-8 heading into their final game of the season Friday night at Dakota Valley.

Miller had 21 points, three steals and one assist.  Clara Justice had six points, eight rebounds, two steals, and an assist.  Olson finished with four points, three rebounds, three steals, and an assist.  Kerrigan Kindopp had three points, two rebounds, four steals, and two assists.  Taylor Schmidt and Tori Malsam both had two points each.  Shelby Welbig finished with six rebounds, four steals, and two assists.

St Mary Boys Hold off Arlington for Fifth Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team won their fifth straight game on Monday, February 7th.  St Mary defeated Arlington 70-56 as St Mary held off a second half surge by Arlington.

After a 9-9 tie with 1:45 to play in the first quarter, St Mary went on a 10-3 run to end the quarter leading 19-12.  St Mary exploded in the second quarter pushing their lead to as many as 21 points.  They ended the first half leading 38-21.

St Mary got their lead back to 20 points, 44-24, with 6:00 to go in the third quarter.  That’s when Arlington starting to make their run.  Arlington finished the third quarter outscoring St Mary 15-7 to cut the lead to 51-39 going into the fourth quarter.  Arlington got the lead down to single digits a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but St Mary had an answer each time.

St Mary shot 43% (26-60) overall, went just 1-14 from three-point area, but shot 68% (17-25) from the free-throw line.  Arlington was 33% (18-55) from the field, 30% (10-33) on three pointers, and 63% (10-16) from the free-throw line.

Five points finished in double figures for St Mary.  John Pica had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Dylan Mathis had a game-high 21 points along with six assists, four rebounds, and four steals.  Nic Gaspar had 14 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  CJ Smith had 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Ty Brown added 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals.

St Mary (12-4) will travel to Howard on Thursday, February 10th.

St Mary Rally Cut Short by Arlington

A fourth-quarter rally by the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls was cut short by Arlington on Monday, February 7th.  Arlington held off the rally for a 60-51 win.

Arlington got the advantage late in the first quarter.  St Mary led 10-8 with 2:00 minutes to go, but Arlington went on an 8-0 run and led 16-10 at the break.  After Arlington led by 10 points 23-13 with 2:19 to play in the second quarter, St Mary fought back to cut the lead down to six, 27-21, by halftime.

St Mary was within five points, 31-26, after a three-pointer by Madala Hanson with 6:30 to go in the third quarter.  Arlington went on a 14-7 run the rest of the quarter and led 45-33 going into the fourth quarter.  Maya Heinitz made a three-pointer with 3:39 left in the game to cut the Arlington lead down to 51-46.  Arlington responded with a 5-0 run for a 56-46 lead with :45 to play to hang on for the win.

St Mary shot 46% (20-44) from the field, 38% (8-21) on three pointers, and 3-4 from the free-throw line.  Arlington was 45% (18-40) shooting, 22% (4-18) from three-point area, and 83% (20-24) from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson had 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists.  Ella Griffin added 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Addyson Gilbert had six points and three rebounds.  Courtney Brown also had six points along with two rebounds and three steals.

Dell Rapids Girls Win at Dak-12/NEC Clash

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls built a big lead by the end of the third quarter and got a 65-52 win over the Tiospa Zina Wambdi on Saturday, February 5th.  Tiospa Zina and Dell Rapids played in Madison at the Dak-12/NEC Clash.

The Quarriers had a lead at the end of every quarter break in the game.  Dell Rapids led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.  The lead grew to 10 points by halftime, 30-20.  Dell Rapids outscored Tiospa Zina  22-12 in the third quarter and led 52-32 going into the fourth quarter.  The Wambdi scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, but the Quarriers held for the win.

Three players finished in double figures.  Liz Price had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Mady VanOverbeke had 13 points and five rebounds.  Jenna Miller finished with 11 points.  Jayme Schmidt added seven points and seven rebounds.

Price was named the game’s MVP.

Dell Rapids (3-15) will travel to Mt Vernon on Tuesday, February 8th.

St Mary Boys Cruise to Fourth Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had no trouble winning their fourth straight on Thursday, February 3rd.  St Mary cruised to a 62-31 win at Lake Preston against the Divers.

The Cardinals raced out to a 14-0 run to start the game and never looked back.  St Mary led 22-6 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 44-15 by halftime.  The Cardinals outscored the Divers 18-16 in the second half.

St Mary shot 44% (23-52) in the game, 16% (2-12) from three-point area, and 58% (14-24) from the free-throw line.  Lake Preston was 23% (11-47) shooting, 10% (2-20) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.

Ty Brown had 17 points and eight rebounds.  Dylan Mathis finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots.  John Pica added 11 points and five rebounds.  Nic Gaspar ended with 10 points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  CJ Smith had seven points, two rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

The Cardinals will host the Arlington Cardinals in a girls and boys doubleheader on Monday, February 7th.

Quarrier Boys Beat Tri-Valley on Senior Night

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team earned a win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on senior night on Thursday, February 3rd.  The Quarriers defeated the Mustangs 71-63 after recognizing their three seniors Shane Stone, Aiden Boechler, and Landon Ruesink.

The two teams traded blows in the first half.  The Quarrires were able break away for a five point lead by the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids led 22-17 at the quarter break.  That lead was short lived as Tri-Valley was able to get a four-point lead, 35-31, with 1:50 to play in the second quarter.  The Quarriers ended the half on a 10-1 run for a 41-36 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids was able to hold the lead throughout the entire second half.  The advantage grew to double digts, 56-44, heading into the fourth quarter.  Tri-Valley tried to make a run late in the game, getting within five points, but Dell Rapids made enough free-throws in the closing minute in the win.

The Quarriers were 50% (27-54) shooting, 39% (9-23) from three-point area, and 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 46% (26-56) from the field, 33% (6-18) on three-pointers, and 38% (5-13) from the free-throw line.

Four players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jack Henry had 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Brayden Pankonen had 13 points, five rebounds, four steals, and seven assists.  Ruesink added 12 points, four assists, and two steals.  Stone finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Boechler had seven points, six rebounds, and two assists.

Dell Rapids will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 8th.

Mustang Girls Spoil Senior Night with Second Half Surge

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls celebrated their six seniors while hosting the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, February 3rd.  The Mustangs spoiled the senior night celebration with a 63-46 win.

The first half featured a few runs by both teams.  After the Mustangs scored the first four points, Dell Rapids went on an 11-0 run and led 11-4 with 2:20 to play in the first quarter.  Tri-Valley responded with a 10-0 to finish the quarter for a 14-11 lead.  The Quarriers had another run in them in the second quarter.  They outscored Tri-Valley 14-6 for a 25-20 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids still held a five point lead, 34-29, with 4:40 to play in the third quarter.  That’s when the Mustangs went on a big roll.  The Mustangs pulled within three points, 36-33, with 3:18 left in the quarter and then finished with a 10-0 run for a 43-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Tri-Valley then outscored Dell Rapids 20-10 for the win.

The Quarriers shot 27% (17-63) from the field, 20% (5-20) from three-point area, and 47% (7-15) from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley shot 43% (21-49) in the game, 55% (6-11) on three pointers, and 83% (15-18) from the free-throw line.

Alli De Stigter led Dell Rapids with 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Zoey Hilmoe had eight points and five rebounds.  Mady VanOverbeke and Jayme Schmidt both had five points and three rebounds each.  Haighleigh Barnhart had four points, eight rebounds, and three assists.  Maggie Schmidt added four points and two assists.

JV Results

After leading by two points at halftime, the Quarrier JV team was outscored 18-9 in the third period.  A hard-fought fourth quarter was not enough as the young Quarriers ran out of time, falling 39-42.  Jenna Miller had 13 points, five rebounds, four steals, and two assists.  Shelby Welbig had 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals.  Clara Justice had eight points and five rebounds.  Kerrigan Kindopp added five points, two rebounds, two steals, and three assists.  Elly Olson finished with three points, five steals, and three assists.

Flandreau Pulls Away from Dell Rapids in Third Quarter

The Dell Rapids Quarriers had a three-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday, February 1st.  The Quarriers hosted the Flandreau Fliers, and the Fliers used a third quarter run for a 64-51 win.

The first half was played close.  Flandreau had a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-10.  The Fliers also held the lead, 25-21, at halftime.  It was a third quarter run by Flandreau that was the difference in the game.  The Fliers scored the first seven points of the second half and led 32-21.  The lead continued to grow as the Fliers led 44-30 at the end of the third quarter.  With 3:15 in the game, Flandreau led 58-40.  Dell Rapids went on a 9-0 run in the next minute to cut the lead to 58-49, but Flandreau ended the game outscoring the Quarriers 6-2.

The Quarriers shot 40% (19-47) from the field, 28% (5-18) on three pointers, and 8-10 from the free-throw line.  Flandreau was hot all night, shooting 63% (24-38), 50% (6-12) from three-point area, and 59% (10-17) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 15 points, four assists, and two steals.  Landon Ruesink finished with 13 points, two rebounds, and two steals.  Jack Henry added 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Aiden Boechler had five points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Shane Stone ended with four points and two rebounds.

Dell Rapids will host Tri-Valley on Thursday, February 3rd.
