First Quarter Run Sparks Quarrier Girls to Win

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls used momentum from a 10-0 run in the first quarter for a 60-46 road win over the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Tuesday, January 25th.

Trailing 11-4 with 1:40 to play in the first quarter, Dell Rapids went on a 10-0 run in 1:15 for a 14-11 lead.  The Elks scored final basked of the first quarter to make it a 14-13 score.  Elkton-Lake Benton did score the first four points of the second quarter and led 17-14 with 6:10 to go in the half, but Dell Rapids held the Elks to just six more points in the quarter and built a 30-23 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids continued to slowly grow the lead in the third quarter.  The advantage grew to 44-33 by the end of the quarter.  The Quarriers continued to put the pressure on the Elks in the fourth quarter and led by almost 20 points before finishing with the 60-46 win.

The Quarriers shot 42% (21-50) in the game, 35% (8-23) from three-point area, and 77% (10-13) from the free-throw line.  The Elks were 40% (16-40) shooting, just 2-9 from three-point area, and 71% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids was able to force 26 Elkton-Lake Benton turnovers in the game.

Alli De Stigter had a team-high 13 points along with two assists.  Claire Wynja had 11 points and five rebounds.  Liz Price finished with eight points and seven rebounds.  Jayme Schmidt and Haleigh Barnhart both finished with seven points.  Mady VanOverbeke and Jenna Miller both had five points each.

Dell Rapids (2-12) will host Vermillion on Thursday, January 27th.

JV Results

After a hard-faught loss over the weekend, the Quarrier JV team bounced back by picking up a huge win over the Elks, 50-16.  Jenna Miller had 17 points, four steals, and two assists.  Kerrigan Kindopp had 10 points and seven steals.  Clara Justice finished with 10 points, five rebounds, two steals, and five assists.  Shelby Welbig had six points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Elly Olson added four points and four steals.  Adah Cavigelli had two points, and Taylor Schmidt had one point, three assists, and a steal.

Cardinal Boys Race Past Deubrook

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals raced out to a 10-1 run to start the fourth quarter to put the game away against the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Tuesday, January 25th.  St Mary won the game 81-62.

The Cardinals held the advantage at the end of every quarter in the game.  St Mary led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, and they were able to extend their lead to 42-31 by halftime.  The Dolphins cut the lead down to five points, 46-41, with 5:00 to play in the third quarter, but St Mary held off any rally and led 58-49 at the end of the quarter.  The 10-1 run in the first two and half minutes of the fourth quarter by the Cardinals put the game out of reach as St Mary led 68-50 at that point.

The Cardinals shot 57% (28-49) from the field, 32% (6-19) on three pointers, and 70% (19-27) from the free-throw line.  Deubrook was 47% (23-49) shooting, 50% (9-18) from three-point area, and 44% (7-16) from the free-throw line.

Dylan Mathis finished with 29 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Ty Brown added 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Nic Gaspar had 14 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  John Pica had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Cardinals (8-4) will host Alcester-Hudson on Thursday, January 27th.

Trojans Rally in Fourth Quarter, Beat Sioux Falls Christian

The West Central Trojan girls hosted the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in a Region 3A battle on Monday, January 24th.  A fourth quarter rally led the Trojans to a 64-57 victory.

The Chargers started the game on a 6-0 run, but held just a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 11-10.  Sioux Falls Christian was able to push that lead to three points by halftime, 24-20.  Through the first two quarters, West Central shot just 26% from the field, while Sioux Falls Christian was 48%.

Things started to turn around for the Trojans in the second half.  The third quarter was back and forth, and West Central held the 38-37 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans started to get a little separation around the midway point of the fourth quarter.  With 3:25 to play, the Trojans built a 53-48 lead.  The Chargers, however, came storming back in the next minute scoring six straight points to take a 54-53 lead.  The two teams battled back and forth again over the next minute.  Jazelle Jarding hit a three pointer with 1:20 to go to give the Trojans a 59-55 lead.  They were able to make enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

West Central finished the game shooting 36% (18-50), 33% (12-36) from three-point area, and 70% (16-23) from the free-throw line.  The Chargers finished shooting 47% (22-47), 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.

Tabor Teel had 23 points and six rebounds.  Jarding finished with 16 points.  Addy Kramer added 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Cambell Fischer had five points, three rebounds, and three assists.

Barb Craig

Barb Craig, 69, of Trent, SD, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Quarry Rock Church. Visitation will be two hours prior to the start of the service. www.kahlerfh.com

Barbara “Barb” Craig, loving wife and mother, was born December 12, 1952 in San Diego, CA to Delvin and Margaret Jakabosky. The family moved to Fairbury, NE when Barb was 17. While attending High School, she met the love of her life and best friend, Randy Craig. On June 24th, 1972 Barb and Randy were married at the hospital in Beatrice, NE in front of a small crowd and Barb’s mother. The happy couple moved to Norfolk, NE where they made their home. They had three children, Rick, Brian and Tracy.

Barb was always devoted to her family. She attended wresting tournaments, helped with school work, and made sure meals were on the table for the kids. Barb always waited to have her meals with Randy if the family couldn’t sit down together. She made sure she was there for her husband, through caring, honoring, and loving her best friend.

After Randy retired, in 2011, Randy and Barb moved to Trent, SD. Soon after, they started attending Quarry Rock Church in Dell Rapids, SD. Barb, in her outgoing way, was always quick to give hugs and clap at the end of every song. Barb was always the “mom” to most everyone she met.

Barb enjoyed painting, glass etching, wood burning and carving, crocheting, knitting with her knitting machine, making jewelry, and her latest hobby – diamond painting.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ginger, and son Rick.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Randy Craig, son Brian (Kathy) Craig, Daughter Tracy (Jim) Jensen, grandchildren Chad, Delaney, Hannah, and Addysen, as well as countless friends and family, most of whom she considered her children.

Howard Beats St Mary in Region 4B Battle

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team traveled to Howard for a Region 4B battle against the Tigers on Monday, January 24th.  Despite a fast start, the Cardinals fell to the Tigers 50-64.

The Cardinals were on fire in the first quarter.  They built an eight-point lead, 20-12, but the Tigers started chipping away at that lead.  Howard cut the lead in half by the start of the second quarter, 21-17.  Howard then outscored the Cardinals 18-8 in the second quarter for a 35-28 halftime lead.  Every time the Cardinals tried to make a run in the second half, Howard had an answer.  The Tigers extended their lead to 47-38 by the end of the third quarter.  Howard pulled away late in the game from the free-throw line.

St Mary shot 33% (18-54) in the game, 36% (8-22) from three-point area, and 43% (6-14) from the free-throw line.  Howard finished 41% (22-54) shooting, 1-7 on three pointers, and 66% (19-29) from the free-throw line.

Ella Griffin led the team with 21 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Madala Hanson added 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Addyson Gilbert finished with six points, five rebounds, and five steals.  Sydney Klein had four points and seven rebounds.  Sierra Klein also had four points.

The Cardinals (7-6) will host the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 27th.

Mustang Wrestling 8th at Dak-12 Tourney

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team traveled to Canton on Saturday, January 22nd for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament.  The Mustangs finished eighth with a total of 53.5 points.  Canton won the team title with 232.0 points.  Tea Area was second followed by West Central.

Mason Hendrixson took home the individual title in the 170-pound weight class with a 3-0 record.  Cole Hendrixson placed fourth in the 106-pound class with a 2-2 record.  Everet Althoff had two wins on the day.  Lawson Loiseau, Landyn Reiser, Zach Powell, and Luke Nehlich all had one win each.

The Mustangs will host a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 25th.

Dakota Valley Takes Both Games of Doubleheader over Tri-Valley

The Tri-Valley Mustangs hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers in a girls and boys doubleheader on Friday, January 21st.  The Panther girls defeated Tri-Valley 61-47.  The Panther boys won 66-32.

Dakota Valley 61, Tri-Valley 47 – Girls

After Tri-Valley made the first field goal of the game, Dakota Valley used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to build a lead they wouldn’t lose.  The Panthers led 18-5 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 34-10 with 2:30 to play in the second quarter.  The Mustangs finished the half on a 7-2 run, but still trailed 36-17 at halftime.  Dakota Valley maintained about a 15-point lead in the third quarter and led 48-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs shot 39% (19-49) from the field, 14% (2-14) from three-point area, and 7-10 from the free-throw line.  The Panthers were 37% (23-62) shooting, 2-17 on three pointers, and 62% (13-21) from the free-throw line.

Lauren Grinde had 17 points and seven rebounds.  Pagie Jewett had 15 points and four rebounds.  Hillary Hastings had five points and six rebounds.  Madelyn Wenzel added four points and eight rebounds.  Ava Pearson had three points, nine rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Dakota Valley 66, Tri-Valley 32 – Boys

Dakota Valley opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back.  The Panthers built a 25-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.  They held Tri-Valley to just four second-quarter points and led 45-14 at halftime.  Dakota Valley also outscored the Mustangs in the second half, 21-18.

The Mustangs shot 31% (13-42) in the game, 1-9 from three-point area, and 5-5 from the free-throw line.  Dakota Valley was 45% (27-60) from the field, 30% (7-23) from three-point area, and 50% (5-10) at the free-throw line.

Lance DeWitt had 10 points and four rebounds.  Noah Haynes finished with six points.  Riley Carlson had five points and two rebounds.  Trey Johnson added four points.  Brayden Oyen had three points and five rebounds.

Winner Survives Upset Bid by Mustang Boys

The Tri-Valley Mustangs nearly got an upset win over the third-ranked and undefeated Winner Warriors on Thursday, January 20th.  The Mustangs pulled within a point, 51-50, with 1:15 to go in the game, but the Warriors made a three-pointer with :43 to play in the game.  They added two free throws in the final 30 seconds to survive and win 56-50.

Winner took a 6-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game.  They ended the first quarter with an 11-4 lead over the Mustangs.  The Warriors built a 13-point lead, 21-8, early in the second quarter.  The Mustangs cut the lead to 24-18 by halftime.

The Warriors were able to extend their lead to double digits again in the third quarter.  In the closing seconds, Carter Sorenson got a steal and a layup to make the score 38-30 heading into the fourth quarter.  Winner, again, held a double digit lead, 42-32, after a three-pointer with 7:20 to play in the game.  The Warriors maintained a six-to-eight point lead over next four minutes.  After two made free throws, Winner led 50-43 with 3:10 left in the game.  Tri-Valley went on a 7-1 run and pulled within a point, 51-50, after a layup by Noah Haynes with 1:15 to play.  Winner, however, held the Mustangs scoreless the rest of the game.

Tri-Valley finished the game 43% (19-44) from the field, 41% (7-17) from three-point area, and 5-8 from the free-throw line.  Winner was 35% (17-48) shooting, 41% (10-24) on three pointers, and 67% (12-18) from the free-throw line.

Braden Oyen had 13 points, two rebounds, and a steal.  Connor Christensen had 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Haynes finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Owen Besmer had five points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs (2-7) will host Dakota Valley on Friday, January 21st.

Trojan Wrestling Places 3rd at Dak-12 Tournament

The West Central Trojan wrestling team had a third place finish at the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Canton on Saturday, January 22nd.  The Trojans finished with 167.5 points.  Canton won the team title with 232.0 points.  Tea Area was second with 215.5 points.

The Trojans had two individual champions.  Karson Vessells placed first in the 106-pound class with a 3-0 record.   Justin Zirpel won the 152-pound division also with a 3-0 record.  Jesse Jost finished second in the 132-pound class with a 2-1 record.  Four wrestlers finished third in their respective weight classes with 3-1 records on the day.  They were Rayce Whiting (120-pound), Chandler Carda (126-pound), Wyatt Nielsen (160-pound), and Gabe Gebhard (195-pound).  Orlando Whiting (113-pound) and Keaton Vessells (138-pound) both finished fourth with 2-2 records.  Langdon Klinkhammer, Cody Opitz, Abram Maras, and Gavin Pischke all had one win in the tournament.

All three wrestlers in the girls brackets placed for West Central.  Alexis Bryant (G126) was second with a 3-1 record.  Allison Foote (G285) also placed second with a 2-1 record.  Hailey Fortney (G142) placed third with a 1-2 record.

West Central will be at Tri-Valley High School for a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Trojans will have a dual against Madison and Dell Rapids.

Middle Quarter Run Gives Trojans Win over Cyclones

A run in the middle quarters of the game for the West Central Trojans gave them a win over the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 22nd.  The Trojans defeated the Cyclones 68-53 for their seventh win of the season and third in a row.

The game was close in the first quarter.  The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie after the opening quarter.  West Central, however, went on a run in the second quarter.  The Trojans outscored the Cyclones 24-14 for a 36-26 halftime lead.  They came out of halftime on a run and pushed the lead to 24 points with 5:14 to play in the third quarter.  Clark/Willow Lake was able to cut the Trojan lead to 52-39 by the end of the quarter.  The Trojans would also outscore Clark/Willow Lake in the final quarter, 16-14, for the win.

West Central shot 63% (26-41) in the game, 83% (9-14) from three-point area, and 7-10 from the free-throw line.  The Cycles finished the game shooting 43% (23-53) and 33% (7-21) from three-point area.  They did not attempt a free-throw.

Three players finished in double figures for the Trojans.  Wilson Droge had 21 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Dillon Jackson had 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Grafton Stroup also had 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Jacob Krempges added eight points, four assists, and three rebounds.

The Trojans (7-3) host Vermillion on Tuesday, January 25th.
