Cardinal Girls Dominate in Complete Team Win

Every player for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals scored at least two points, had at least one rebound, and had at least one steal in a 70-38 win over the Lake Preston Divers on Monday, February 14th.

St Mary got out to a quick 8-0 start, but the Divers pulled within six points by the end of the first quarter, 17-11.  That was as close as Lake Preston would get.  The Cardinals outscored Lake Preston 22-10 in the second quarter for a 39-21 halftime lead.  They continued to come big on the defensive end which led to easy layups in the second half as well.

The Cardinals shot 43% (29-67) from the field, 29% (8-28) on three-point shots, and 4-10 from the free-throw line.  The Divers finished 30% (12-40) from the field, 21% (3-14) from three-point area, and 11-15 from the free-throw line.  St Mary forced 32 Lake Preston turnovers, 22 of those on steals.

Madala Hanson had 17 points, four steals, three assists, and two rebounds.  Courtney Brown had 12 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Ella Griffin added 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Brianna Griffin had nine points.  Addison Libis finished with six points.  Addyson Gilbert had five points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Maya Heinitz and Whitney Warwick both had three points each, and Sydney and Sierra Klein each had two points.

The Cardinals will host Centerville in their final regular season game on Tuesday, February 15th.

West Central Runs Past Madison in Third Quarter

After trailing most of the first half, the West Central Trojan boys basketball team used a big third quarter to get a 75-65 home win over the Madison Bulldogs on Thursday, February 10th.

Madison was on fire to start the game.  They were 50% in the first quarter shooting scoring 21 points.  West Central was far behind scoring 18 points of their own.  The two teams traded shots in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs led 38-36 at halftime.

The defense and hot shooting in third quarter propelled the Trojans past the Bulldogs.  West Central knocked multiple three-point shots and forced eight Madison turnovers.  The Trojans opened the quarter on an 11-0 run and outscored the Bulldogs 26-8 for a 62-46 lead after the third quarter.  Madison got within ten points with an early run in the fourth quarter, but never threatened the Trojans any more than that.

West Central shot 47% (27-58) from the field, 47% (16-34) on three pointers, and a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line.  Madison was 46% (25-54) shooting, 20% (3-15) from three-point area, and 75% (12-16) from the free-throw line.

Grafton Stroup finished with 26 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Dillon Jackson had 13 points, three rebounds, and seven assists.  Jack Linneman added 10 points and two steals.  Braden Herr had eight points.  Jacob Krempges had five points, four rebounds, two steals, and five assists.

Dell Rapids Bowling Drops Last Two Regularly Scheduled Matches

The Dell Rapids High School Club bowling team has has a busy month of February.  They have had two regularly scheduled matches as well as two make-up matches.  Their regularly scheduled matches were against Yankton on Friday, February 4th and Canton on Friday, February 11th.

Yankton defeated Dell Rapids in all three games by scores of 1152-883, 1458-871, and 1706-956.  Bryce Janiszeski had a series of 501 (162, 167, 172). Ryder VanZee had a 500 series (162, 178, 160).  Dylan Aker had a 471 (153, 130, 188), while Oscar Anderson had a 470 (171, 151, 148).  Zander Heathcote had a series of 415 (131, 133, 151), and Orran O’Meara had a series of 353 (104, 112, 137).  Adaya Penning had a 287 (85, 88, 114) for the girls team.

On February 11th Canton also defeated Dell Rapids in all three games by scores of 1006-821, 951-920, and 1109-1022.  Ashton Schaaf had the high series of 518 (161, 167, 190).  Janiszeski had a 516 series (182, 161, 172).  Anderson finished with 449 (125, 148, 176).  VanZee had a 437 series (114, 149, 174).  Caden Bitzer had a series of 434 (107, 159, 168).  Aker had a 409 (131, 136, 142).  Penning had a 430 series (132, 179, 119).

Dell Rapids also had make-up matches on February 1st and February 8th, but no results were available on the league website.

Quarrier Girls Wrestling Team Finishes Regular Season in Harrisburg

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls wrestling team participated in the Harrisburg Girls Tournament on Saturday, February 12th.  Dell Rapids finished with a total of 16.0 points as a team.

Rylee Bird placed seventh in G126 with a 3-2 record, and all three wins via a pin.  Janessa Nelson was also seventh in the G145 division with a 1-2 record.  Nelson’s win was a pin.  Bailey Credeur placed eighth in G132 with a 2-4 record.  Credeur earned one pin and one decision victory.  Mikayla Hight placed eighth in G145 finishing 0-3 in matches and receiving two byes.

Comeback Falls Short for Cardinal Girls at DWU Classic

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls trailed by 14 points early in the fourth quarter to the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars.  St Mary got within two points, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback at the DWU Classic on Friday, February 10th.  The Cougars made enough free throws in the closing moments to hang on to a 55-48 win.

St Mary took advantage of cold shooting and turnovers by the Cougars in the first quarter.  The Cardinals led 12-7 at the first quarter break.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, shots stopped falling in the second and third quarters.  McCook Central/Montrose scored 19 points in the second quarter and held a 26-25 halftime lead.  St Mary then scored just five points in the third quarter, and the Cougars led 41-30 going into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals made their comeback in the fourth quarter, but came up just short.

The Cardinals shot 28% (18-64) overall in the game, 23% (6-26) from the three-point area, and 6-11 from the free-throw line.  McCook Central/Montrose was 39% (16-41) from the field, 36% (5-14) from three-point area, and 75% (18-24) from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson had 18 points, six rebounds, and three steals.  Ella Griffin ended with 11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  Sydney Klein added six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal.  Courtney Brown, Addyson Gilbert, and Brianna Griffin all had four points each.

The Cardinals will travel to Lake Preston for a make-up game on Monday, February 14th.

Quarrier Wrestling Ninth in Final Regular Season Tournament

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team had their final regular season tournament on Saturday, February 12th.  Dell Rapids traveled to Huron and finished ninth as a team with 92.5 points.  Winner was the top team with 231.0 points.  Aberdeen Central was second with 191.0 points, and Bon Homme/Scotland was third with 163.0 points.

John Mortrude had a second place finish in the 126-pound class finishing 3-1 on the day.  Weston Mason (160-pound) and Quinn Carr (182-pound) both had third place finishes also with 3-1 records.  Aiden Geraets finished 2-2 and placed fourth in the 195-pound class.  Hunter Nelson was fifth in the 152-pound division with a 3-2 record.  Brandon Schmidt had one win and placed sixth in the 220-pound class.  Gabe Clark (145-pound) had two wins on the day as well.

The Quarriers will be at O’Gorman High School for the Region 1A Tournament on Saturday, February 19th.

Quarrier Boys Fall to St Thomas More at DWU Classic

The Dell Rapids Quarriers played the #2 St Thomas More Cavaliers at the DWU Classic in Salem on Saturday, February 12th.  The game was less than 24 hours after Dell Rapids played #1 Dakota Valley.

The Quarriers had a 10-3 lead late in the first quarter, but the Cavaliers went on a 9-0 run for a 12-10 lead at the end of the quarter.  Dell Rapids regained the lead at 14-13 early in the second quarter, but that was the last lead they had.  St Thomas More led 25-22 at halftime.  The Cavaliers extended their lead to 40-32 at the end of the third quarter.  They outscored Dell Rapids 12-9 in the final quarter for the 52-41 win.

Dell Rapids was 36% (16-44) from the field, just 2-15 from three-point area, and 7-8 from the free-throw line.  The Cavaliers finished 39% (20-52) shooting, 32% (7-22) on three pointers, and 5-10 from the free-throw line.  The big difference in the game was second-chance points.  St Thomas More had 16 offensive rebounds which turned into 11 second-chance points.

Jack Henry had 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists.  Landon Ruesink finished with eight points, four rebounds, and three steals.  Aiden Boechler added seven points and two rebounds.  Brayden Pankonen had six points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Camden Justice also had six points along with three rebounds.

Dell Rapids (12-6) will host Lennox on Friday, February 18th.

#1 Dakota Valley Beats Quarriers at Home

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys fell behind in the first quarter and couldn’t get out of that hole at Dakota Valley High School on Friday, February 11th.  The #1 Panthers built a 13-point lead in the first quarter on their way to a 75-55 win.

Dakota Valley led 20-7 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids cut the lead by two points by halftime and trailed 41-30 after the first two quarters of play.  The Quarriers got the Panther lead into single digits after scoring the first basket of the third quarter, but that was as close as they could get.  Dakota Valley extended the lead to 53-37 at the end of of the third quarter.  The Panthers outscored Dell Rapids 22-18 in the final quarter.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 40% (20-50) from the field, 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and just 46% (10-22) from the free-throw line.  The Panthers shot 46% (28-61) from the field, 39% (10-26) on three pointers, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 18 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Jack Henry had eight points, five rebound, and four steals.  Landon Ruesink finished with seven points, four assists, and four steals.  Aiden Boechler also had seven points along with a rebound.

Quarrier Girls Regular Season Ends at Dakota Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team played in their final regular season game of the year at Dakota Valley High School on Friday, February 11th.  The Quarriers fell to the Panthers 73-47 for a regular season record of 3-17.

Dell Rapids got into an early hole in the first quarter.  Dakota Valley outscored Dell Rapids 15-3 in the first quarter.  The Quarriers hung with the Panthers for most of the remainder of the game.  Dakota Valley only outscored the Quarriers by 14 more points in the other three quarters combined.

Dell Rapids shot 35% (18-52) from the field, 28% (5-18) from three-point area, and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.  Dakota Valley was 41% (29-60) shooting, 22% (6-27) from three-point area, and 9-9 from the free-throw line.

Liz Price had 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Mady VanOverbeke had seven points, two rebounds, and three assists.  Jayme Schmidt added six points and five rebounds.  Alli De Stigter and Jenna Miller both had five points and two assists each.  Claire Wynja had a game-high eight rebounds.

The Quarriers will start the Region 3A tournament on Tuesday, February 24th.

JV Results

The Quarrier JV basketball team came out on the short end of a 40-43 game against a very good Dakota Valley JV team.  Ultimately turnovers in the closing minutes played the biggest part in the loss.  With :10 to play, the young Quarriers had a couple of shots to try to tie the game, but couldn’t get the basked they needed.  It was the final game of the season for the Dell Rapids JV team, finishing with a 9-9 record.

Miller had 23 points.  Shelby Welbig had six points.  Elly Olson finished with four points.  Mya DeStigter and Clara Justice both had three points each.  Reagan VanZee had one point.

Defense and Free Throws Key to Big Win for Cardinals

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Howard Tigers squared off in a big Region 4B match-up in Howard on Thursday, February 10th.  It was a battle between the top two seeds in the region.  The St Mary defense held Howard to just three points in the final quarter for a 54-38 win.

The Cardinals had a lead after every quarter break, but the battle was tough.  St Mary held a two-point lead, 14-12, at the end of the first quarter.  They maintained that lead throughout the second quarter and led 28-22 at halftime.  The Cardinals continued to hold a six-point lead, 30-24, with 5:30 to play in the third quarter.  Howard then went on a 9-1 run to take a 33-31 lead with 3:22 to play in the quarter.  St Mary responded with a 7-2 run for a 38-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After an early free throw by the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, CJ Smith and Nic Gaspar hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Cardinals a 45-35 lead with 5:25 to play.  Howard’s only basket in the fourth quarter came on a three-pointer with 4:00 to go.  St Mary continued to build on their lead, making their free-throws down the stretch, for the victory.

St Mary shot 38% (19-50) from the field, 44% (7-16) from three-point area, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line.  Howard finished the game shooting 33% (16-48) overall, 2-13 on three pointers, and 4-8 from the free-throw line.

Smith had 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals in the game.  John Pica finished with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.  Dylan Mathis added 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  Gaspar had eight points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
