Trojan Wrestlers Split Two Duals at Tri-Valley

The West Central Trojan wrestling team participated in a four-team meet at Tri-Valley High School on Tuesday, January 7th.  West Central had duals against Lennox and Tea Area on the night.

Tri-Valley defeated Lennox 64-12 but fell to Tea Area 33-43.

Chandler Carda, Jude Jarding, Robby Edberg, Chet Carda, Justin Zirpel, and Wyatt Nielsen all collected two wins on the night.

West Central is now 6-6 in team dual competitions.

Tri-Valley Wrestling Splits in Home Quadrangular

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team split two duals in a home quadrangular held on Tuesday, January 5th.  Tri-Valley hosted West Central, Tea Area and Lennox and had duals against Tea Area and Lennox.

Tri-Valley defeated Lennox 47-33 but fell to Tea Area 32-48.

Porter Jensen, Mason Hendrickson, Isaac Nehlich, Alex Andresen, and Ethan Nehlich all had two wins on the night.

William “Bill” Huntimer

William “Bill” P. Huntimer, 89, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2021 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service with a rosary prayed at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military Rites will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. www.kahlerfh.com

William Patrick Huntimer was born on September 13, 1931 in Colton, SD, the son of Joseph and Regina (Elskamp) Huntimer. He grew up in the Colton and Dell Rapids areas. He attended school at Chester grade school, St. Mary Catholic Schools and Dell Rapids High School. Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1950 and served until 1959. He served in Korea, Ocean Side, CA, Japan and Okinawa. He was married to Bernice Cramer. He worked as a foreign car mechanic in Ocean Side, CA from 1959-1962. He Then moved to Sioux Falls where he worked for Bahnson Motors, Ryan Motors and Jamison Imports. He joined the Navy Seabee Reserves in 1965 in Sioux Falls and went into active duty in 1968. He served in Vietnam, Okinawa, Midway Island, Falon, NV, Diego Garcia, Rota, Spain, Puerto Rico and Oxnard, CA. He joined the Fleet Reserves in 1979 to make a total of 30 years Military service at discharge and retirement. While in the service he received 17 decorations for Korea and Vietnam and participated in four major engagements against the enemy in Korea.  He moved to the Dell Rapids area in 1979. He married Evelyn Richards in Mitchell, SD in 1980. He worked as the service manager for Sioux Falls Kenworth from 1979-1989. He then worked part-time jobs for the Dell Rapids School District, True Value Hardware and Spaders RV.

Bill was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a life member of Disabled American Veterans, life member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator. He was a Military Radio Operator which included running phone patches for the military including the presidential helicopter. He was an operator of the SHARES National Radio Emergency Network participation in national emergencies including 911.

Bill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Evelyn Huntimer of Dell Rapids, his sons, Anthony (Chella) Huntimer of Mentone, CA, Daniel Huntimer of Phoenix, AZ and David (Nancy) Huntimer of Brandon; his daughters, Kimberly Huntimer of Madison; Sandra (Steve) Carlson of Emery, Sue (Ken) Carlson of Madison and Kimberly (Alan) Berven of Dell Rapids; his 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; his brother, Joseph (Linda) Huntimer of Beulah, ND and his sister, Kathleen (Daryl) Sorken of Las Vegas, NV.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Patrick, sister, Marion Goodrick, granddaughter, Stephany Carlson, brothers, James, Robert and Fred Huntimer.

Quarrier Wrestling Loses Two Duals in Vermillion

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team dropped two duals in Vermillion on Tuesday, January 5th.  The Quarriers fell to both Canton and Vermillion.

Canton defeated the Quarriers 68-6, and Vermillion took the win 48-30.

Dell Rapids is now 1-4 as as team in duals.  The Quarriers will be at Garretson-Brandon Valley Tournament in Brandon on Saturday, January 9th.

Cougars Pull Away from Quarrier Girls

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls traveled to Salem to play the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars on Tuesday, January 5th in their fifth game away from home.  The Cougars were able to pull away from the Quarriers for a 56-41 win.

A strong defensive effort in the first half kept the game within reach for Dell Rapids.  The two teams ended the first quarter tied 10-10.  The Cougars were able to get a few more shots to fall in the second quarter and ended the half leading 27-20.

A quick 6-0 run by McCook Central/Montrose to start the third quarter gave the Cougars a double-digit lead at 33-20.  The Quarriers cut the lead down to eight at 33-25 with 4:30 to go in the third quarter after a 5-0 run of their own, but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the game.  Dell Rapids was able to get within 10 points early in the fourth quarter, 44-34 with about 7:00 to go, but the Cougars pulled away for the win.

Two players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids. Mady Vanoverbeke had 14 points in the game.  Zoey Hilmoe finished with 12 points.  Haileigh Barnhart finished with seven points, Becky Dorn had five points, and Maggie Shmidt had three points.

Dell Rapids (0-6) will host the Canton C-Hawks in a double-header with the boys on Thursday, January 7th.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

C Team Results

The Quarriers girls basketball C team lost an overtime heart breaker Tuesday night against McCook Central/Montrose, 30-34.  Holding a six point lead late in regulation, some untimely turnovers by Dell Rapids provided MCM the opportunities to tie the game. The young Quarriers were unable to score in the overtime period while McCook Central/Montrose made four free throws.

St Mary Win Streak Snapped by Garretson

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team took a three-game winning streak into Garretson on Tuesday, January 5th.  The Blue Dragons were able to snap that streak with a 71-60 win over the Cardinals.

The Cardinals took it to the undefeated Blue Dragons in the first quarter and held a 15-12 lead at the quarter break.  Garretson, however, responded in the second quarter with a 22-12 advantage for a 34-27 halftime lead.

Garretson was able to put a little more space between them and the Cardinals in the third quarter.  The Blue Dragons added five more points to the lead for a 51-39 score heading into the fourth quarter.  The two teams combined for 41 points in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals just couldn’t close the gap enough.

Ella Heinitz had a game-high 25 points along with seven rebounds.  Karlie Klein finished with 13 points and five rebounds.  Ella Griffin and Courtney Brown both finished with eight points each.  Sydney Klein had six points and three assists.

St Mary (4-2) will host Estelline/Hendricks on Thursday, January 7th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

West Central Defense Strong in Bounce Back Win

Coming off a tough loss to the White River Tigers on Saturday, January 2nd, the West Central Trojan girls basketball team bounced back with a big 55-29 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies at home on Tuesday, January 5th.

The Trojan defense was the star of the game.  West Central held the Huskies scoreless in the first six minutes of the game and didn’t allow Elk Point-Jefferson’s first field goal until the second quarter.  The Trojans also had 13 steals while forcing 18 turnovers in the game.

West Central got out to a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game and never looked back.  They led 20-3 after the first quarter and the lead grew to 36-13 by halftime.  The Trojans then outscored Elk Point-Jefferson 19-16 in the second half.

Eleven different players recorded at least one rebound in the game for the Trojans.  Two players finished in double figures in scoring.  Addy Kramer had 13 points, four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Josslin Jarding added 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Rylee Haldeman also had three steals and three assists.  Cambell Fischer finished with eight points, while Molli Thornton and Jada Vanoverbeke both had six points each.  Cassidy Siemonsma had a team-high nine rebounds.

West Central (5-1) will host the Tea Area Titans on Thursday, January 7th in another big match-up for the Trojans.  West Central is ranked #2 in the latest media poll, while Tea Area is ranked #6.

Mustang Girls Win Big in Baltic

Having not played a game since December 22nd, the Tri-Valley Mustang girls basketball team looked sharp in their first game in two weeks at Baltic on Tuesday, January 5th. The Mustangs beat the Bulldogs 66-39.

Tri-Valley was on fire to start the game getting out to a 22-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. This was a lead they would never lose. Baltic cut the lead by a point in the second quarter as Tri-Valley led 35-19 at halftime.

Baltic did make a run in third quarter.  The Bulldogs cut the Mustang lead down to nine points at 38-29 with 2:45 to play in the quarter.  Tri-Valley ended the final minutes of the quarter on a 6-2 run to push the lead back to 13 points at 44-31 heading into the final quarter.  The Mustangs then held Baltic to just eight points while scoring 22 to end any rally by Baltic.

Tri-Valley was 41% (24-58) from the field, 25% (5-20) from three-point area, and 54% (13-24) from the free-throw line.  The Mustangs also out rebounded the Bulldogs 37-22 and forced 20 Baltic turnovers, 11 of those on steals.

Tabor Teel led Tri-Valley with 28 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Lauren Grinde had 13 points and six rebounds.  Hillary Hastings finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs (4-2) will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Thursday, January 7th.

Last Second Shot Sinks Trojans at Sacred Hoops Classic

In one of the most anticipated games of the 2nd Annual Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 2nd, the undefeated West Central Trojan girls played the undefeated White River Tigers.  The game matched all of the hype leading to the game.

Neither team was able to get a sizeable advantage during the game, and it all game down to a shot at the buzzer.  Unfortunately for the Trojans, the winning basket came at the hands of Caelyn Valandra-Prue as the Tigers won the game 62-60.

Each team held a lead at the different quarter breaks.  West Central had the first quarter break leading 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.  White River was able to grab a four-point lead at halftime of 37-33.

The Trojans took the lead again in the third quarter, and pushed the lead to 47-42 with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter.  White River ended the quarter on a 4-0 run, and the Trojans led 47-46 heading into the final quarter.  Both teams traded leads in the fourth quarter.

Addy Kramer made her seventh three-point basket with 1:41 to go in the game to give West Central a 60-58 lead.  The Tigers tied the game at the free-throw line with 1:06 to play.  Both teams had an opportunity to take the lead in the final minute, but it was the shot of Valandra-Prue as the buzzer sounded that won the game for the Tigers.

West Central finished the game shooting 41% (23-56) from the field, 42% (11-26) from three-point area, and just 3-10 from the foul line.  The free-throw line is where White River held a huge advantage.  The Tigers finished the game 22-27 for 81%.

Kramer, who was named the game’s MVP for West Central, finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.  Rylee Haldeman had 14 points and nine assists.  Cassidy Siemonsma had 13 points and six rebounds.

West Central Boys Win Third Straight

The West Central Trojan boys basketball team won their third straight game on Saturday, January 2nd at the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell.  The Trojans got a 52-41 victory over the Custer Wildcats.

The Trojans never trailed in the game.  They worked to a five-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 13-8.  The Trojans were able to push the lead to seven by halftime at 23-16.  West Central took control of the game in the third quarter.  They pushed the lead to 19 points at 41-22 with :45 to go in the quarter.  Custer made a little run in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans were able to hold off the Wildcat comeback.

West Central finished the game at 38% (20-52) from the field, 32% (7-22) from three-point area, and 56% (5-9) from the free-throw line.  The Trojans also out rebounded Custer 32-24 in the game.

The Trojans had a balanced scoring attack.  Carter Schmeichel had 10 points and four rebounds.  Hunter Hagerty, who was named the game’s MVP for the Trojans, finished with nine points and three rebounds.   Kasan Abedi had seven points, Derrick Eich finished with six points, and Jacob Krempges and Derek Eidsness both had five points each.  Jaxon Skinner had a team-high six rebounds.  Krempges had four assists.

West Central (3-2) will host Dakota Valley on Tuesday, January 12th.
