Quarrier Boys Open Season With Win

December 10, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys basketball team opened up their season with a win over West Central on Friday, December 7th, 60-37.  Dell Rapids led for most of the game as they held a 16-12 lead after the first quarter and a 31-20 lead at halftime.  The Quarriers shot 45% from the field and 86% from the foul line.  Dell Rapids also out-rebounded the Trojans 39-33 in the game.  Cole Langer paced the Quarriers with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Zach White, Bryce Koch, and Matt Kolbeck each had eight points apiece.  Jacob Morris and Ty Hoglund each had seven points.  Koch also had 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in the game.

West Central was led by Mitchell Brockhaus and Cody Bussel with eight points apiece.  Dylan Haggerty had 11 rebounds and Brockhaus had 9 rebounds in the game.

Head Coach Jason Fersdahl said, “It was great to start the season on a winning note by defeating an always strong and physical West Central Trojan team. Our players were perhaps a little over-excited as we started the game committing too many fouls, but as we got into the flow of the game I thought we played with great defensive intensity throughout the rest of the game. We were able to pressure their guards and we really made it difficult for West Central to score inside by getting good help on defense. We were able to neutralize their big post player (Brockhaus) and make him work for every attempt he got. We were able to force 19 turnovers in the game by utilizing our athletic ability and quick hands on defense. Where we need to improve is turning these opportunities into transition baskets at the other end. Offensively, we were able to get some high percentage shots inside and some good open looks from the perimeter. We will work to continue to improve our shooting from the perimeter as this will be a big key for us going forward in the season. I thought our seniors did a great job of leading us in our first game and we got some major contributions from players off our bench.”

The Quarriers will travel to Beresford to take on the Watchdogs on Tuesday, December 12th.

JV Results:
The Dell Rapids defeated the West Central Trojans 48-19.  Leading all scorers was Ty Hoglund with 21 points, followed by Ben Hammer and Riley Schmidt with seven and six points respectively.  The Quarriers held West Central scoreless in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 13 point lead in the first half.  Hitting 3-pointers were Zane Schumaker, Kahler Berven, and Tanner Solberg.  Dell Rapids shot 5-11 from the line.  Riley Schmidt had five assists and Ben Hammer had six rebounds and six blocked shots in the contest.

Freshman Results:
In the first game of the season, the Quarriers freshman team had an impressive  38-22 win against West Central.  This was a total team effort in which eight of the nine players scored. They were even more dominant on the defensive side, where they only allowed five points in the second half.  Justin Riswold and Ryan Geraets did a great job stopping the opponents’ best players.  We had very balanced scoring with Brett Mogen, Justin Riswold and Cordell Wright scoring eight points and Sam White six. These nine young men played great team basketball and we will look for more of that style of ball when we play Beresford on Tuesday,  Tea area on Friday, and at Wakonda’s tourney on Saturday.

Dell Rapids High School Standout Named Gatorade® South Dakota Football Player Of The Year

November 29, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Cole Langer TD

CHICAGO (November 29, 2012) — In its 28th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Cole Langer of Dell Rapids High School as its 2012-13 Gatorade South Dakota Football Player of the Year. Langer is the second Gatorade South Dakota Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Dell Rapids High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Langer as South Dakota’s best high school football player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award announced in December, Langer joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.), Wes Welker (1999-00, Heritage Hall HS, Okla.), Terrell Suggs (1999-00, Hamilton HS, Ariz.), Anquan Boldin (1998-99, Pahokee HS, Fla.) and Jerome Bettis (1989-90, Mackenzie HS, Mich.).

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound senior linebacker and fullback led the Quarriers to an 11-1 record and the Class A state championship this past season. Langer rushed for 874 yards and 15 touchdowns on 102 carries, and recorded 71 tackles along with three forced fumbles. He is a two-time First Team All-State selection and a member of the Argus Leader Elite 45 team.  Langer has maintained a 4.14 GPA in the classroom. A devoted member of his church community and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he has volunteered locally on behalf of youth sports programs and has served on his school’s student council.

“He can take over a game with just his hard running style,” said Craig Clayberg, head coach at Tea High. “When you have a player with his size, speed and body control, it’s very difficult for your defense to stop. One defensive player can’t bring him down—you need two, three or even four guys.”

Langer has verbally committed to play football on scholarship at South Dakota State University beginning in the fall of 2013.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Langer joins recent Gatorade South Dakota Football Players of the Year Alex Schultz (2011-12, Lincoln High School), Matt Hermanson (2010-11, Washington High School), Austin Sumner (2009-10, Brandon Valley), Dustin Lotzer (2008-09, Sisseton High School) and Riley Reiff (2007-08, Parkston) among the state’s list of former award winners.  Adam Wolff, Dell Rapids, won the award in 2002.

Quarriers Win Third Straight Championship

November 9, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarriers won their third straight 11A Football Championship on Friday, November 9th, at the Dakota Dome with a 47-0 win over the Harrisburg Tigers.

The Quarriers got off to a sluggish start by committing four of their eight penalties in the first quarter.  Cole Langer, however, would find the endzone with 1:15 to go in the first quarter on a 2-yard run to give the Quarriers a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.  Harrisburg fumbled on the first play in the second quarter, and that was a enough of a spark for Dell Rapids.  Langer would find the endzone again three plays later on an 18-yard run, and Dell Rapids extended the lead to 14-0.  After a Tiger punt, Riley Schmidt scored on a 44-yard touchdown run with 9:03 to go to give Dell Rapids a 20-0 lead.  The Quarriers would score one more time before the half on a 19-yard run by Lane LeBrun to take a 28-0 halftime lead.

Harrisburg started with the ball in the second half and drove down to the Dell Rapids 11 yard line, but the Quarrier defense would shut down the Tiger offense.  Harrisburg would attempt a 28-yard field goal that missed wide to the left.  Michael McGee would add another score two plays later on a 76-yard run that would put Dell Rapids ahead 35-0.  Dell Rapids would score quickly again after a punt in the third quarter.  Schmidt found the endzone for the second time on a 17-yard run with 4:19 left in the third quarter to give the Quarriers a 41-0 lead.  Harrisburg would drive down to the Dell Rapids two yard line at the end of the third quarter.  But three plays into the fourth quarter, Schmidt would pick up a fumbled pitch and run it 89 yards for the final touchdown of the game, and give the Quarriers a 47-0 win.

Schmidt had four carries for 112 yards and two rushing touchdowns in the game.  Langer carried 12 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns.  McGee had three carries for 77 yards and a touchdown.  L. LeBrun had eight carries for 58 yards and a touchdown.  Matt Kolbeck was 1-2 passing for 40 yards.  Jacob Morris had the lone reception for 40 yards.  Dell Rapids finished the game with 358 yards of rushing and 40 yards of passing for a total of 398 yards in the game.  Langer finished the game with 11 tackles to lead the defense.  McGee, Jackson Entringer, and Ryan Nichols each had seven tackles apiece.  Schmidt finished with six tackles and a fumble recovery.  Cody Nielsen had an interception to go along with four tackles in the game.

Riley Schmidt was named the SD Sports Writers “Joe Robbie” MVP and the SD Coaches Association Awards Outstanding Back.  Jackson Entringer was named the SD Coaches Association Awards Outstanding Lineman.
