Quarriers Roll into Semi-Finals

October 30, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

For some, Monday night football featured the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, but for the true high school football fans, and more specifically, the Dell Rapids Quarriers football fans, Monday night football featured a romp and stomp affair as Dell Rapids destroyed Chamberlain, 47-6.   As in the opening round of the football playoffs last week, Dells opened up a 28-0 lead after one quarter.  The difference this week was the presence of Cole Langer—-3 rushes, 3 touchdowns—and instead of a kick-off return for a touchdown, this time it was a blocked punt causing the ball to head into the end zone where Andrew Wiebenga made the recovery for the other TD of the first quarter.   By intermission, Cody Nielsen got into the scoring frenzy making it 35-0.  Before the end of the second quarter, Coach Steve Hansen was getting back-up players into the game for more “game time experience”.  As Hansen told Big Sioux Media in the post-game interview, “Everybody got into the game tonight…every player…and when we can do that, it feels good”.  Second half scoring for Dell Rapids included touchdowns by Brett Nichols and Matthew DeNoon.   The win allows Quarriers fans to stay home and support the team in the semi-final game Saturday against Hot Springs, winners over Todd County.  Other teams winning in 11A included Spearfish and Harrisburg ending the season for West Central and Dakota Valley.

Dell Rapids racked up 263 yards of total offense while holding Chamberlain to just 83 yards.  Langer had three carries for 104 yards and the three touchdowns.  Joel Brust had two carries for 40 yards, and Nielson had two carries for 24 yards and a touchdown.  Matt Kolbeck was 1-4 passing for two yards.  Tanner Solberg was 1-1 passing for 26 yards.  James Webster was on the receiving end of the Solberg pass for 26 yards.  Tyler Gee led the defense with four tackles.  Bryce Koch finished the game with 3.5 tackles, and Wiebenga added three tackles for the Quarriers.  Tanner Ljunggren had an interception.

The semi-final game on Saturday will kickoff at 5:00 p.m., with the webcast starting at 4:45 p.m. on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Roll to Playoff Win

October 24, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

As quick as a rattler can strike an unsuspecting foe, the Dell Rapids Quarriers struck quickly against the Milbank Bulldogs in the first round of the high school football playoffs Tuesday, October 23rd, in Dell Rapids.  Riley Schmidt took the opening kick-off 75 yards for the first of four touchdowns the Quarriers would score in the first quarter.  Milbank then was forced to punt the ball away on their opening offensive set.  Moments later Lane LeBrun would score on a five yard rushing touchdown.  On the next Milbank possession, the Quarrier defensive unit rose to the occasion forcing a fumble and recovering it in great field position. Ryan Nichols of Dell Rapids then became the 3rd Quarrier to score before the mid-way point of the first quarter.  R. Nichols followed up his 36 yard TD with another touchdown of 25 yards, making the score 28-0 in favor the hometown Quarriers.  Michael McGee added two TD’s in the 2nd quarter, including an 80 yard sprint to the end zone.  By halftime the Quarriers were showing their dominance on both sides of the ball and led 42-14.  Touchdowns in the second half by Schmidt and Tanner Ljunggren added to the final score of 57-22, allowing the Quarriers to advance to next Monday night’s game (October 29th).

Dell Rapids had 411 yards of total offense to 291 yards for Milbank.  McGee had 110 yards on four carries.  R. Nichols had 82 yards on seven carries, and L. LeBrun had 73 yards on seven carries.  Matt Kolbeck was 2-4 passing for 44 yards.  Zach White and Jacob Morris led the defense with 4.5 tackles each.  Colin LeBrun and Schmidt added 3.5 tackles each on the night.  Jackson Entringer had a fumble recovery, and Schmidt also had an interception in the game.
