Quarriers Win Mud-Filled Battle

The Dell Rapids Quarriers ground out a 20-0 win over the Milbank Bulldogs on Thursday, October 18th, in Milbank.  Dell Rapids countered 30-40 mph winds and rain with a ground attack in the win, scoring a touchdown in each of the first three quarters.  Lane LeBrun scored two rushing touchdowns, and Ryan Nichols had the other rushing touchdown for the Quarriers.  Dell Rapids also won the turnover battle 2-1 in a game that featured eight total fumbles caused by the wet conditions.

The Quarriers racked up 285 rushing yards while holding Milbank to just 58 yards of rushing.  The Bulldogs were only able to gain 119 yards of total offense and five first downs on Dell Rapids.  LeBrun carried the ball 19 times for 164 yards.  R. Nichols had 18 carries for 98 yards.  Phillip Schwebach led the defense with 5.5 tackles. R. Nichols had four tackles, and Zach White added three tackles for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers finish the regular season at 7-1 and the #1 seed in Region 1 of class 11A.  Dell Rapids will get to take on the Milbank Bulldogs again on Tuesday, October 23rd, in the opening round of the 11A football playoffs in Dell Rapids.  Big Sioux Media will be webcasting the Quarrier games on their march to the Dome.

Competitive Cheer & Competitive Dance Championships

Sixth Annual Competitive Cheer and Competitive Dance Championships
Set for October 19-20

The Watertown Civic Arena is the site for the sixth annual state competition for cheer and dance. Competition for Class B and Class A will be held on Friday, October 19th, with opening ceremonies beginning at 6:00 p.m. Class AA competition will begin at noon on Saturday, October 20th. Thirty-two schools have entered the competitive cheer competition, while 25 schools will compete in competitive dance.

The 2012 Class A & B state competition will feature 29 dance routines and 17 cheer routines. Class AA entries include 15 cheer and 45 dance routines. Competition for competitive cheer will be stunting/tumbling and stunting/non-tumbling, categories. Competitive dance will have four categories: pom, jazz, hip hop, and kick. There will be both large and small group competition in each division. Each school may enter one team per division.

Last year’s overall champions in the Cheer Competition were Class AA – Brookings; Class A – Sioux Valley; and Class B – Dell Rapids St. Mary. 2011 overall champions for the Dance Competition were Class AA – Sioux Falls Washington; and Class A – Dakota Valley.

The state meet will be a two session tournament with adult tickets at $10.00 each and the student ticket at $6.00 each session. More information about the competition can be found on the SDHSAA website: www.sdhsaa.com.

~ For the first time in several weeks, the Class AA rankings remained exactly the same this week. Sioux Falls Washington, the preseason #1, remained top-ranked for the eighth straight week, after a 62-3 win against Rapid City Stevens. Washington has a 377-to-52 overall scoring advantage over opponents. Brandon Valley held onto the #2 spot after recording a 42-27 road win over Pierre, a team that received votes again this week. BV received 410 yards passing and five TDs from senior quarterback Chase Marso – three to senior wide receiver Matthew VandeBerg with 12 catches for 192 yards. Sioux Falls Roosevelt retained the #3 spot with a 34-0 win over Rapid City Central as sophomore quarterback Taryn Christion had 197 yards throwing. Sioux Falls Lincoln remained #4 with a 40-21 win over a stubborn Brookings team. Sioux Falls O’Gorman held onto fifth with a fifth straight win, a 11-0 decision against Rapid City Central. The Knights, which had the unusual scoring of a field goal, safety and a TD, recorded a second straight shutout.

The Quarriers rolled to a 52-0 win over Sisseton. Despite playing without standout running back Cole Langer (foot injury), Dell Rapids rolled up a 28-0 halftime lead en route to another win. Dell Rapids’ only loss has been to 11B Tri-Valley, which has the only wins over the Quarriers in the past two years (21-14, 2011; and 28-21, 2012). Dell Rapids has not lost to a Class A school since the final game of the 2009 season (Milbank). Tea Area, which has a 253-to-89 points advantage against foes, defeated previously #3 Harrisburg, 27-7, and moved up to the #2 spot as #2 Dakota Valley fell to 11B #2 Tri-Valley, 27-7. Tea Area plays at Dakota Valley on Thursday. The loss by Harrisburg was the first to a South Dakota opponent. West Central recorded a 53-6 win and remained fifth in the latest rankings.

~ The 11B rankings were unchanged for the second straight week.
Flandreau, which owns a 373-to-50 scoring differential, defeated Bon Homme, 55-0. The Fliers are averaging 329.6 rushing yards per game. Tri-Valley handed 11A #2 Dakota Valley a 27-7 defeat. The Mustangs, which own a 220-to-124 scoring advantage against opponents, outgained Dakota Valley, 282-to-207. Winner rolled to a 35-0 win over Wagner, recording its fourth straight shutout and fifth overall. The Warriors have put together a 16-quarter streak without allowing a point. Overall Winner own a 343-to-52 point differential. Aberdeen Roncalli rolled to a 35-0 win over Webster Area, and own a 282-to-26 scoring advantage against opponents. Roncalli also has recorded five shutouts, including three straight.  The Cavaliers have held opponents scoreless for 13 straight quarters. Deuel, which received 290 yards rushing and five TDs from quarterback Lincoln Swenson, has only lost to ranked teams – Aberdeen Roncalli and Flandreau.

~Kimball/White Lake remained #1 for a second straight week after rolling to a 46-0 win over South Central. The WiLdKats finished the regular season with an 8-0 mark.
Overall they have a 379-to-120 scoring advantage against opponents. BEE rebounded from a 26-22 home loss to #1 Kimball/White Lake with a dominating 58-27 win over Chester (3-4).  They have a 292-to-121 scoring advantage against opponents this season. Deubrook Area had a 59-8 win over De Smet/Iroquois to stay in third with a seventh straight win. The Dolphins received 285 yards rushing and three TDs from Ryan Knutson, who recorded his fourth 200-yard or better rush game of the season. Howard won again to remained at #4. Gregory, which has outscored opponents, 358-to-125, and has scored over 48 points in six of seven games, moved back into the rankings at #5. However, they were pushed for the fifth spot by Leola Frederick (6-1), which lost its first game, as well as unbeaten White River (7-0) and Potter County (6-1).

~ Canistota retained a firm hold on the top spot after extending the school’s winning streak to 31 games with a 74-20 win over Marion, scoring a season-best 62 points in the first half. The 31straight wins by the Hawks is tied for the second-best winning streak in 9-man ranks all-time (White Lake, 1976-79). Warner continued to win after a 49-14 win over previously 9AA #5 Leola/Frederick (6-1).  They own a 317-to-47 points advantage over opponents. Hamlin recorded a 46-0 win over Florence/Henry. This Chargers squad has a 318-to-58 scoring advantage, including 190-to-30 in the last four wins, two of them shutouts. Moving up to fourth was Herreid-Selby, which defeated Sully Buttes, 52-0. They have a 370-to-50 overall points advantage, including 166-to-22 over the last three week. Irene-Wakonda was idle and fell into a fifth place tie with unbeaten Arlington (7-0), which rolled to a 58-6 win over Dell Rapids St. Mary. Arlington has a 325-to-73 scoring differential. Unbeaten Faith also received votes in the poll.

five shutouts this season, retained a strong hold onto the #1 spot in the rankings with a 48-12 win over Lemmon McIntosh. The Ranchers now have a 347-to-31 scoring advantage in a 7-0 start. Colome, which has won five straight, defeated Kadoka, 26-0, and moved up to #2 after Viborg-Hurley fell to #4 following a 38-20 loss to 9A Hanson. Colome owns a 268-to-123 point differential over opponents. Hitchcock-Tulare, which travels to Faulkton Area Thursday, had an open week and have four straight wins own a 244-to-99 point differential. V/H lost its second straight decision to an A school. They play 9A #5 Irene-Wakonda on Thursday. The defending 9B champions Waverly/South Shore retained the #5 spot with a 52-0 win over Waubay-Summit. The Coyotes have won three straight and have a 262-to-155 scoring differential over opponents.

Quarrier Volleyball Team 1-3 at Big Sioux Conference Tournament

The Dell Rapids Quarriers volleyball team participated in the Big Sioux Conference Tournament in Tea on Saturday, October 13th.  The netters posted a 1-2 match record to claim 7th place.  Dell Rapids fell to Tri-Valley 14-25, 21-25, 11-25 in the opening round.  Beresford picked up a win over the Quarriers in the second round 25-15, 22-25, 15-25.  Dell Rapids came back to defeat Canton for 7th place 25-22, 25-16.

Leaders for the tournament included Margo Hegge with 10 digs, 10 service points and 10 set assists.  Morgan Hoglund picked up 28 digs and 9 service points, while Sarah Haak had 22 digs.

The Quarriers are now 11-13 on the year.  Dell Rapids will travel to Madison to take on the Bulldogs on Tuesday, October 16th.

Arlington Hands Dell Rapids St Mary Loss

In the battle of the Cardinal, Arlington beat Dell Rapids St Mary 58-6 on Friday, October 12th in Arlington.  Arlington scored 20 seconds into the game and never looked back in the victory.  Arlington scored 30 points in the first quarter, 22 points in the second quarter, and the game-ending touchdown about mid-way through the third quarter as the game ended on the mercy rule.  Dell Rapids St Mary scored their lone touchdown in the second quarter on a run by Ben Bunkers.

Dell Rapids St Mary picked up 157 rushing yards and 28 passing yards for a total of 185 yards of offense.  Josh Brown carried 11 times for 89 yards.  Bunkers had eight carries for 46 yards.  Bunkers was also one of six passing for 13 yards and one interception.  Wes Heinricy was two of two for 15 yards.  Noah Fiegen and two catches for 21 yards.  Noel Hansen had four tackles to lead the defense.  Jonah Longville added 3.5 tackles.  Brown had a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “Arlington is a very good team.  We had trouble with turnovers and that took away some opportunities to keep the game closer.”

Dell Rapids St Mary’s record drops to 3-4.  Dell Rapids St Mary will host Lake Preston and will host parents night on Thursday, October 18th.

Quarriers Thump Redmen

The Dell Rapids Quarriers defeated the Sisseton Redmen on parents night Friday, October 12th, 52-0.  Dell Rapids scored in every quarter on their way to the victory.

The Quarriers gained 383 rushing yards and 81 passing yards for a total of 464 yards of offense.  Sisseton gained 22 yards rushing and 131 passing yards for a total of 153 yards of offense.  Lane LeBrun had 11 carries for 107 yards.  Ryan Nichols had nine carries for 99 yards and a touchdown.  Brett Nichols carried the ball four times for 80 yards.  Riley Schmidt had four carries for 30 yards and two touchdowns.  Tanner Ljunggren had a touchdown run of 21 yards.  Matt Kolbeck was 6 of 7 passing for 81 yards and two touchdowns.  Bryce Koch had a touchdown catch of 17 yards.  Michael McGee also had a touchdown catch.  McGee, Schmidt and Andrew Anderson all led the defense with four tackles each.

The Quarriers improve to 6-1 on the year.  Dell Rapids will travel to Milbank to take on the Bulldogs Thursday, October 18th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Harrisburg Hands Quarriers Loss

On Tuesday, October 9th, the Quarriers were defeated by the Harrisburg Tigers.  All three squad fell to the host team.  The varsity lost 14-25, 20-25, and 22-25.  Leaders for the Quarriers included Cassidy Wright and Morgan Hoglund with nine kills and nine digs respectively.  The Quarriers’ record now stands at 10-10.

The JV were defeated by the set scores of 12-21 and 21-25.  Cited for their efforts were Mara Adams, Maria Nagelhout, Brittnay Welbig, and Brittney Siemonsma.

The C team dropped their contest 14-25 and 22-25.  Sami Reider and Lizzy Gottsch paced the team efforts.

Dell Rapids will host Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, October 11th.  The match will be webcast on Big Sioux Media

Quarriers Take Down #1 Team

The Dell Rapids Quarriers defeated the #1 team and only undefeated team at the time in class 11A on Friday, October 5th.  Dell Rapids beat the Dakota Valley Panthers 37-19 at Dakota Valley.  The game was back and forth in the first half, but Dell Rapids put the game away with a strong second half.

The Quarriers came out swinging as they scored on their first offensive play of the game on a touchdown pass from Matt Kolbeck to Cole Langer to take a 6-0 lead.  After each team traded turnovers on interceptions, the Panthers took the lead 7-6 on a touchdown run by quarterback Aaron Likness and a successful extra point.  Dell Rapids answered with a touchdown pass from Kolbeck to Riley

Schmidt for a 12-7 lead.  Likness and the Panthers would take the lead back at 13-12 after a quarterback sneak into the endzone and a failed extra point attempt.  After a fourth down conversion, Schmidt found the endzone again, this time on the ground to give the lead back to the Quarriers 18-13.  Dakota Valley again answered with a touchdown pass from Likness to Brody VanGinkle to give the Panthers a 19-18 lead late in the second quarter.  The Quarriers would score one more time before halftime on a fourth and goal touchdown pass from Kolbeck to Schmidt for Schmidt’s third touchdown of the half.  Dell Rapids lead 24-19 at halftime.  The Quarriers would add two more scores in the second half on touchdown runs by Schmidt and Ryan Nichols.  The Dell Rapids defense held the Panther offense scoreless in the second half for the 37-19 win.

Dell Rapids put up 392 yards of offense while holding the Panthers to 237 total yards of offense.  The Quarriers picked up 18 first downs and had the ball for nearly 30:00 of the game.  Schmidt carried the ball eight times for 80 yards and two touchdowns.  Langer had four carries for 54 yards and had one reception for a 41-yard touchdown before leaving the game late in the first quarter with an injury.  R. Nichols had 10 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown.  Kolbeck was 7-13 passing for 155 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.  Schmidt had four catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns.  Bryce Koch had two catches for 45 yards.  The defense was led by Colin LeBrun with 6.5 tackles.  Nathan Koens, Koch, and Cody Nielsen each had 4.0 tackles. Brett Nichols and Schmidt each had an interception.

The win moves the Quarriers to 5-1 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host Sisseton on Friday, October 12th.

Cardinals Drop Tough Game on Road

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team dropped a tough game on the road to the Estelline Redmen on Friday, October 5th.  The Cardinals outgained the Redman 291 yards to 271 yards, but penalties and turnovers turned out to be the difference in the game.  The Cardinals had 293 yards of rushing and -2 yards of passing offense.  Josh Brown led the team with 19 carries for 166 yards and a touchdown.  Ben Bunkers carried the ball 21 times for 101 yards and a touchdown.  Christian Schnieders carried three times for 26 yards.  Defensively for Dell Rapids St Mary, Jared Scholten had 11.5 tackles in the game.  Jacob Frost added seven tackles, Brown had 6.5 tackles and Schnieders had six tackles.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “We played hard for the most part, but turnovers and penalties cost us in the end.  We’ll have to try and rebound this week against Arlington.”

The Cardinals record falls to 3-3 on the year.  Dell Rapids St Mary will travel to Arlington on Friday, October 12th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
