Cardinal Boys Fall to Chester in Final Game

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team fell to the Chester Flyers 74-32 in Chester on Monday, February 23rd.  It was the final regular season game for the Cardinals.

St Mary was on fire offensively in the first quarter, knocking down a few three-pointers in the opening quarter.  The Cardinals held 13-11 lead with about 3:30 to play in the quarter, but the Flyers went on a 14-5 run to close out the quarter, including hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer, to take a 25-18 lead at the end of the quarter.  The Cardinal offense could not get going again as they were held to just two points in the second quarter and trailed the Flyers 43-20 at halftime.  Chester was able to extend the lead to 53-29 at the end of the third quarter, and the Cardinal offense was held to just three more points in the fourth quarter.

St Mary ends the regular season with a 1-19 record.  The Cardinals will play in the first round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, March 2nd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Two Quarrier Wrestlers Advance to State

QuarriersTwo Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestlers will be participating in the 2015 State A Wrestling tournament on Thursday, February 27th, and Friday, February 28th, in Sioux Falls.  Austin Eulberg and Ben Cavigielli earned their way to the state competition by placing in the Region 3A tournament on Saturday, February 21st.

Eulberg placed third in the 160-pound weight class.  He won his first match by pinning Justin Brockel of Sisseton.  Eulberg was then pinned by Jake Anderson of West Central, but earned his way back with a pin of Cole Eidem of Brookings.  Eulberg then placed third by pinning Dylan Mitzel of Watertown to qualify for state.

Cavigielli placed third in the 182-pound weight class.  Cavigielli pinned Patric Sproles of Sioux Falls O’Gorman in his first match.  Cavigielli was then pinned by Wyatt Resmen of Brookings.  Cavigielli then won a 5-3 decision over Jared Mettler of West Central before placing third with a 5-2 decision over Sean Muilenburg of Sioux Falls Roosevelt to advance to state.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt won the Region 1A team title with 240.5 points.  Brookings was second with 168.0 points, and West Central finished third with 159.0 points.  Dell Rapids finished 8th as a team with 38.0 points.

Cardinal Boys Win on Senior Night

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys earned their first victory of the year on Senior Night over the Baltic Bulldogs on Friday, February 20th.  St Mary’s first five field goals were three-point shots in the first quarter.  Baltic held a 14-9 lead with 3:00 to go in the first quarter, but the Cardinals ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to take the lead 19-14 at the end of the quarter.  St Mary held Baltic to just one point most of the second quarter while continuing to build their lead.  The Cardinals led 35-20 at halftime.

St Mary continued to grow the lead in the third quarter as they were able to take a 16-point lead at 49-33 into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals were held to just nine points in the final quarter, but were able to hang on for the win.

St Mary’s record is now 1-18 on the year.  The Cardinals will end the regular season in Chester on Monday, February 23rd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Clinch Dak-12 Regular Season Title

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys won the Dak-12 Conference regular season title by defeating the Lennox Orioles 67-59 in Lennox on Friday, February 20th.  The win gave the Quarriers an 10-1 conference record on the year.

Dell Rapids seemed headed to another big win after leading 20-8 in the first quarter and 36-21 at halftime.  However, the Orioles mounted a second half comeback.  Lennox closed the gap to 10 points by the end of the third quarter at 49-39.  Lennox was able to pull within five points a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but each time the Quarriers were able to pull ahead and keep the lead.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 59% (27-46) from the field, 40% (6-14) from three-point area, and 78% (7-9) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 20 rebounds, 12 assists, and only eight turnovers in the game.  Lennox shot 39% (21-54) from the field in the game.  They had 26 team rebounds and 15 assists.

Dell Rapids had three players finish in double figures.  Ty Hoglund had 27 points and nine rebounds in the game.  Riley Schmidt finished with 17 points, three assists, and two steals.  Zane Schumaker added 10 points, five assists, and two steals.  Lennox was led by Jacob Hinker with a game-high 29 points.

Dell Rapids improves to 17-2 on the year.  The Quarriers finish out the regular season on Monday, February 23rd, against the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Senior Night.  The game will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Win on Senior Night

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls pulled off a come-from-behind win over the Madison Bulldogs on Senior Night in Dell Rapids on Thursday, February 19th.  Dell Rapids had a short-lived lead in the first quarter before the Bulldogs ran out to an eight-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 19-11.  The Quarriers got within two points, but Madison pushed the lead back out to seven at 32-25 at halftime.

That’s when the Dell Rapids defense and offense switched gears.  The Quarrier defense held Madison to just six third-quarter points and pulled to within three points at 38-35 at the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids then exploded for 25 points in the fourth quarter pulling away for a 60-52 win to complete the come-from-behind win.

Dell Rapids had three players finish in double figures.  Averi Pankonen and Mikaela Stofferahn each had 15 points apiece.  Brittney Siemonsma finished with 12 points.  Arial Hoffman and Emma Paul each had eight points.  Madison was led by Roz VandenBosch with 14 points, and Danielle Roemen with 11 points.  The Quarriers finished the night 19-28 from the free-throw line, while Madison was just 8-11.

The Quarriers finish the regular season with a record of 11-9.  Dell Rapids will receive a first-round bye in the Region 3A tournament.  The Quarriers will play in the semi-finals on Thursday, February 26th, at Tea.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Rebound in Sisseton

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys picked up another win in Sisseton by beating the Redmen 72-44 on Monday, February 17th.  The Quarriers held just a five point lead at the end of the first quarter at 15-10.  However, Dell Rapids exploded for 24 points in the second quarter while holding Sisseton to just 10, giving the Quarriers a 39-20 lead at halftime.  The Quarrier defense kept Sisseton to just 24 points in the second half for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids in the game.  Zane Schumaker had 20 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in the game.  Ty Hoglund finished with 18 points and three assists.  Riley Schmidt had 12 points, six assists, and six steals.  Tanner Heim pulled down nine rebounds, and Ben Hammer finished with seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids shot 55% (28-51) from the field, 35% (6-17) from the free-throw line, and 77% (10-13) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 36 team rebounds, 18 assists, and 11 steals.

The Quarriers improve to 16-2 on the year.  Dell Rapids will travel to Lennox on Friday, February 20th, to take on the Orioles.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls End Skid

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls ended their three-game losing streak with a 50-25 win against the Sisseton Redmen on Monday, February 17th, in Sisseton.  The Quarriers raced out to a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.  The lead was 12 points for Dell Rapids at halftime, 28-16.  The Dell Rapids defense held the Redmen to just nine second half points for the win.

Averi Pankonen had 17 points for Dell Rapids to lead the Quarriers.  Mikaela Stofferahn tossed in eight points, and Sami Reider added seven points for Dell Rapids.  Cami Goodhart led Sisseton with 11 points.

Dell Rapids improves to 10-9 on the year.  The Quarriers will play their final regular season game at home on Thursday, February 19th, as Dell Rapids will host Madison.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Raiders Sneak Past Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders made one field goal in the fourth quarter, but knocked down nine free throws to hang on and beat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls on Monday, February 17th, in Rutland.  The Cardinals grabbed an early lead to start the game, but the Raiders led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter.  O-R-R extended that lead to 22-15  by halftime.  The Raiders ran the lead to nine points by the end of the third quarter at 36-27.  St Mary started to make a run in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders made enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for the 47-43 win.

The Cardinals finish the regular season at 5-15.  St Mary will play in the first round of the District 7B tournament on Tuesday, February 24th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids Hosts Dak-12 Wrestling Tournament

Dak12Conference-2Dell Rapids High School hosted the 2015 Dak-12 Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 14th.  Canton won the team championship with 218.5 points.  West Central finished second with 172.0 points.  Beresford was third with 158.5 points, and Vermillion was fourth with 131.5.  Madison, Elk Point-Jefferson, Lennox, Tri-Valley, Dell Rapids, Dakota Valley and Tea finished fifth through eleventh in that order.

Roncalli Hands Quarrier Boys Second Loss of Season

NewDRLogoThe Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers handed the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys just their second loss of the season.  The Cavaliers beat the Quarriers 73-61 at the DWU Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, February 14th.  Roncalli lead by just two points at the end of the first quarter at 19-17.  Dell Rapids was able to take the lead and head into the locker room at halftime with a 34-30 advantage.  The Cavalier offense picked up a bit in the second half, out-scoring the Quarriers 43-17 in the final two quarters for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 49% (20-41) from the field in the game, 35% (7-20) from three-point area, and 82% (14-17) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers only had 16 team rebounds, eight assists, nine steals, and had nine turnovers in the game.

Zane Schumaker led the Quarriers with 25 points and three assists.  Ty Hoglund had 18 points and three assists.  Ben Hammer added nine points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Riley Schmidt ended the afternoon with six points and four steals.

Dell Rapids falls to 15-2 on the year.  The Quarriers travel to Sisseton on Tuesday, February 17th.
