Quarrier Boys Win Fourth Straight

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys won their fourth game in a row, and 15th on the season, with a 75-35 win over the Dakota Valley Panthers on Friday, February 13th, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back as they took a 17-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 24-7.  Dell Rapids extended that lead to 39-17 at halftime.  The offense continued to roll in the second half as Dell Rapids pushed their lead over the Panthers to 60-25 at the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids outscored Dakota Valley 15-10 in the final quarter for the win.

The Quarriers shot 45% (29-64) from the field, 34% (10-29) from three-point area, and 78% (7-9) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 37 team rebounds, 18 assists, 10 steals, five blocked shots, and turned the ball over just eight times.

Zane Schumaker erupted for 30 points in the game along with six rebounds and four assists.  Riley Schmidt added 11 points and had three assists.  Adam Karst and Tanner Heim each had six points.  Ty Hoglund grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists.  Ben Hammer also pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots.

Dell Rapids improves to 15-1 on the year.

Dakota Valley Sends Quarrier Girls to Third Straight Loss

NewDRLogoThe Dakota Valley Panthers handed the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls their third straight loss on Friday, February 13th, in Dell Rapids.  Dakota Valley led at every quarter break in the game.  The Panthers led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter, and then pushed their lead to 13 points at 36-23 at halftime.  Dell Rapids was held to just eight points in the third as Dakota Valley led 54-31.  The Panthers won the game 68-43.

Head Coach Jeff Dvorak said, “Dakota Valley’s record may not show it at 10-9, but tonight they were one of, if not the best, team we’ve played.  We knew they played fast and aggressive, but we were not ready to meet that speed tonight.  They really controlled every phase of the game.  Going into our final week of the regular season, this needs to serve as a wake up call that we need to play faster, stronger, and have some leaders emerge when the going gets tough.”

The Quarriers shot 33% (16-48) from the field in the game.  They were 10-13 from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers turned the ball over 18 times and were out-rebounded 2-40.  Lindsey Morris had eight points in the game for Dell Rapids.  Sami Reider finished with seven points and five steals.  Emma Paul added seven points and four rebounds.

The Quarriers fall to 9-9 on the season.  Dell Rapids travels to Sisseton on Tuesday, February 17th.

Cardinal Girls Earn Fifth Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls earned their fifth win of the season by beating the Colman/Egan Hawks 54-47 on Friday, February 13th, in Colman.  St Mary jumped out to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter.  However, the Cardinals only scored four points in the second quarter, and the Hawks took a 24-17 lead into halftime.  The C/E Hawks extended their lead to 14 points with 5:06 to go in the third quarter.  That’s when the Cardinals began their comeback.  The Cardinals pulled within four points at 34-30 at the end of the third quarter.  St Mary then scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to earn the come-from-behind win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 45% (17-38) from the field, 27% (3-11) from three-point area, and 59% (17-29) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 30 team rebounds, seven steals, and turned the ball over just 10 times in the game.

Ally Mullaney finished the game with 17 points to lead the Cardinals.  Lindsey Wolles added 16 points, and Jackie Wolles tossed in 14 points and grabbed five rebounds.  Kaitlyn Vortherms pulled down six rebounds.  Cassy Geraets dished out four assists.

The Cardinals improve to 5-14 on the year.  St Mary travels to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Tuesday, February 17th, to take on the Raiders.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Hang on for Win Against Colman/Egan

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys held a 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but couldn’t hang on for the win against the Colman/Egan Hawks on Thursday, February 12th, in Colman.  The C/E Hawks were able to take the lead heading into halftime at 23-20.  Both teams scored nine points in the third quarter, and the C/E Hawks maintained a three-point lead at 32-29.  The C/E Hawks held St Mary scoreless through the first half of the fourth quarter, and the Cardinals fell to Colman/Egan 49-38.

St Mary shot 33% (14-42) from the field, 38% (8-21) from three-point area, and 20% (2-10) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 23 team rebounds and turned the ball over 11 times.  Mitch Brown had 15 points in the game.  Christian Schneiders finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Noah Fiegen pulled down eight rebounds in the game.

The Cardinals fall to 0-17 on the year.  St Mary travels to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland to take on the Raiders on Monday, February 16th.

Quarrier Boys Route Titans

NewDRLogoAfter a slow first half start, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys cruised past the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 10th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The Quarriers opened up a small lead early in the game and led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids scored 18 more points in the second quarter and pushed their lead to nine at 33-24 by halftime.

The Quarriers then exploded offensively in the second half.  Dell Rapids scored 26 points in the third quarter while holding the Titans to just nine.  This gave Dell rapids a 59-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.  The Quarrier offense didn’t slow down as they added 24 more points and went on to win the game 83-42.

Dell Rapids shot 53% (31-59) from the field, 56% (10-18) from beyond the arc, and 73% (11-15) from the free throw line.  The Quarriers had 40 rebounds, 19 assists, and turned the ball over 13 times.  Dell Rapids had five players finish in double figures.

Adam Karst led Dell Rapids with 19 points. Ty Hoglund had 15 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.  Zane Schumaker added 12 points and eight assists.  Sam White also had 12 points to go along with six rebounds.  Ben Hammer finished with 10 points, nine rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Dell Rapids improves to 14-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Dakota Valley on Friday, February 13th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Titans Second Half Push Beats Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls fell to the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans 52-40 on Tuesday, February 10th in Dell Rapids.  The Titans held a slim three point lead at the end of the first quarter 11-8.  Dell Rapids pulled within one point at 21-20 by halftime.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton’s eighteen points in the third quarter proved to be too much for Dell Rapids to overcome.  The Titans extended their lead to 39-30 by the end of the third quarter, and then held the Quarriers to just 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Dell Rapids shot 31% (13-42) from the field, 25% (4-16) from three-point area, and 83% (10-12) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 20 team rebound and 15 turnovers.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton shot 61% (25-41) from the field, 17% (1-6) from three-point area, and 14% (1-7) from the free-throw line.  The Titans had 25 team rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Mikaela Stofferahn had 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Quarriers.  Sami Reider tossed in eight points, and Emma Paul added six points.  Megan Bultsma had 21 points, and Makaela Karst had 19 points for the Titans.

Dell Rapids falls to 9-8 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Dakota Valley on Friday, February 13th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Late First Quarter Run Sinks Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks scored seven unanswered points in the final two minutes of the first quarter to propel themselves to a 54-32 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls on Monday, February 9th.  Canistota had a two point lead at 10-8 with 2:00 to go in the first before ending the quarter ahead 17-8.  The Hawks extended that lead to 27-11 with 2:30 to go in the first half after a 10-3 run.  Canistota led 33-16 at halftime.  The Cardinals held Canistota to just six points in the third quarter, but could only close the gap to 39-25 at the end of the third quarter.  Canistota then held St Mary to just seven points in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.

St Mary shot 25% (12-48) from the field, 0-6 from three-point area, and 44% (8-18) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 36 team rebounds and turned the ball over 23 times.  Ally Mullaney had 18 points and 11 rebounds for St Mary.  Lindsey Wolles tossed in eight points.

The Cardinals fall to 4-14 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Colman on Friday, February 13th, to take on the Colman/Egan Hawks.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Overcome Canistota

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team 79-45 on Monday, February 9th, at St Mary High School.  The game was played as part of a double-header as a make-up game from earlier in the season.

The Hawks started the game on a 15-2 run over the first four minutes.  The Cardinals were able to close the gap to 19-10 by the end of the first quarter.  St Mary pulled within seven points at 21-14 in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get.  Canistota extended their lead to 33-14 with 3:45 to go in the half after a 12-0 run.  The Hawks ended the half ahead 38-18.  Canistota scored 41 more points in the second half while holding St Mary to 27.

The Cardinals fall to 0-16 on the year.  St Mary looks to pick up their first win of the season in Colman on Thursday, February 12th, as the Cardinals face the Colman/Egan Hawks.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Beat SF Christian for Second Time

DRHSvsSFC_BBB_2-7-15The #2 Dell Rapids Quarrier boys defeated #4 Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 56-50 at the Dak-12 Conference Classic in Hartford on Saturday, February 7th.  This was the second time in a month that the Quarriers defeated the Chargers, and the third loss on the season for Sioux Falls Christian.

Dell Rapids started the game on a 5-0 run, but the Chargers went on a 12-4 the rest of the quarter to take a 12-9 lead at the quarter break.  Sioux Falls Christian scored the first three points of the second quarter and pushed their lead to six points at 15-9.  That’s when the Quarrier offense took over.  Dell Rapids went on a 19-4 run, and ended the half ahead 31-21.  The third quarter went back and forth as each team scored 12 points.  Dell Rapids maintained their 10-point lead at 43-33 at the end of the third quarter.  Trailing 48-40 with 4:00 to go in the game, the Chargers made a run.  Sioux Falls Christian scored the next five points to pull within three, and after a three-point basket by Jackson Schipper with :52 to go in the game, the Chargers were within two points at 50-48.  Zane Schumaker scored the next basket with :32 to go on a driving lay-up to put Dell Rapids ahead 52-48.  Sioux Falls Christian worked the ball down low to Austin Schreur, but Ben Hammer swatted his shot away for his fourth blocked shot of the game to seal the win for Dell Rapids.DRHS_Dak12Champs_BBB_2-7-15

Ty Hoglund led the Quarriers with a game-high 26 points.  Riley Schmidt added 13 points.  Hammer had six rebounds and four blocked shots.  Adam Karst ended the night with five rebounds and three steals.  Schumaker dished out five assists.  Sioux Falls Christian had three players finish the game in double-figures.  Chard Barkema had 13 points, and Schipper and Keegan VanEgdom each had 12 points apiece.

The Quarriers improve to 13-1 overall and 9-1 against Dak-12 opponents.  Dell Rapids will host Mt Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday, February 10th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Elkton/Lake Benton

DRSM LogoThe Dell  Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls lost to the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, February 6th, in Dell Rapids by a score of 66-50.

With the Elks leading 9-6 early in the first quarter, the Elks went on a 10-0 to take a 19-6 lead late in the quarter.  St Mary scored the final three points to pull within 10 at the end of the first quarter 19-9.  But the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at 21-21.  The Elks answered back with a 12-4 run to take a 33-25 lead.  St Mary closed the gap again to 34-30 by halftime.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Cardinals would get as the Elks took their largest lead of the night at 16 points with 1:13 to go in the third.  Elkton/Lake Benton led 50-34 at the end of the third quarter, holding St Mary to just four points in the third quarter.  The Cardinals scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, but were unable to gain on the Elks.

St Mary finished the night shooting 27% (12-45) from the field in the game, making just three field goals in the entire second half.  They were 18% (2-11) from the three-point area, and 65% (24-35) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 35 team rebounds, but turned the ball over 28 times.

Lindsey Wolles finished with 18 points in the game.  Jackie Wolles added 13 points along with six rebounds.  Ally Mullaney had eight points and eight rebounds for St Mary.

The Cardinals fall to 4-13 on the year.  St Mary will host Canistota on Monday, February 9th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
