Quarrier Boys Cruise Past #5 Tri-Valley

DRHSvsTV_BBB_2-6-15The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys had no trouble with the #5 Tri-Valley Mustangs in a battle of top five teams in Class A boys basketball on Friday, February 6th.  The Quarriers handed the Mustangs just their fourth loss of the season 63-35 at Tri-Valley High School.

Dell Rapids opened up the game on an 11-3 run, and extended that lead to 19-7 by the end of the first quarter.  The Quarriers didn’t look back as the defense held Tri-Valley to under 10 points in three of the quarter.  Dell Rapids led 33-17 at halftime, and added 30 more points in the second half while holding Tri-Valley to just 18 for the win.

The Quarriers finished the night shooting 56% (24-43) from the field, 53% (9-17) from three-point area, and 86% (6-7) from the free-throw line in the game.  They pulled down 32 rebounds, had 16 team assists, five steals, and turned the ball over just 10 times in the game.

Riley Schmidt led all scorers with 18 points in the game.  He also had three rebounds.  Ty Hoglund finished with 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Ben Hammer added 10 points and had four blocks.  Sam White tossed in six points and had six rebounds.

Dell Rapids improves to 12-1 on the year and 8-1 in the Dak-12 Conference.  The Quarriers will take on the SF Christian Chargers at the Dak-12 Conference Classic in Hartford on Saturday, February 7th, at 6:45 p.m.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Mustangs Stun Quarrier Girls

DRHSvsTV_GBB_2-6-15The Tri-Valley Mustangs erased an 11-point third quarter deficit to beat the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls on Friday, February 6th, by a score of 47-45 at Tri-Valley High School.

The Quarriers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead to start the game, and led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids extended the lead to 21-14 with 4:45 to go in the second quarter before Tri-Valley tied the game at 25-25 with just under a minute to go.  The Quarriers, however, scored four points in the final :40 to take a 29-25 halftime lead.

With just under 5:00 left to play in the third quarter, Tri-Valley pulled within three points at 31-28.  Over the next two minutes and thirty seconds, Arial Hoffman scored eight straight points to give Dell Rapids their largest lead of the game at 39-28 with 2:11 to go in the quarter.  Tri-Valley answered right back with five straight points to end the quarter and close the game to 38-33 at the end of the third quarter.  Over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, each team scored two points to keep Dell Rapids in the lead at 40-35.  Tri-Valley scored 1o points in row over the next two minutes to take a 45-40 lead.  Hoffman made a break-away layup with 2:00 to go to pull Dell Rapids within 45-42.  After a made basket by the Mustangs, Hoffman hit a three-point shot from the right wing to make it a two-point game at 47-45 Tri-Valley, but the Quarriers could not get off another shot and the Mustangs picked up the come-from-behind win.

Dell Rapids falls to 9-7 overall, and 7-3 in the Dak-12.  The Quarriers will host Mt Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday, February 10th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Slow Down Elks

DRSM LogoThe Elkton/Lake Benton Elks earned their 14th win of the season with a 54-30 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys on Thursday, February 5th, in Dell Rapids.  The Elks held the Cardinals to just two points in the first quarter, and only eight points the entire first half on their way to a 29-8 halftime lead.

The Cardinals were able to get a little offense going in the third quarter, but still trailed the Elks 42-18 at the end of the third.  St Mary was able to put in 12 points in the final quarter, but wasn’t enough to stop the Elks.

Noah Fiegen led the Cardinals with 11 points and 15 rebounds.  Christian Schneiders finished the night with six points and 16 rebounds.  The Carinals had a total of 41 rebounds, eight steals, 13 assists, and turned the ball over 20 times.  St Mary shot 28% (13-46) from the field, 11% (1-9) from three-point area, and 50% (3-6) from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals look to pick up their first win of the year on Monday, February 9th, as St Mary will host Canistota in a make-up game from earlier in the year.  The game will be part of a double-header and webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Nelson Signs with DWU

Jase Nelson, senior at Dell Rapids High School, signed a letter of intent to play football at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell.  Nelson finished his senior year of Quarrier football completing 57 of 107 passes for 1,118 total yards.  He threw 15 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.  He also ran the ball 26 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.

One of Nelson’s best games came in the semi-finals of the playoffs where he went 7-11 passing for 125 yards and two touchdowns against West Central to send the Quarriers to the Dome on their way to the 11A Championship.

Nelson will now suit up as a member of the Tiger football team.

Quarrier Boys Back in Win Column

DRHSvsCanton_BBB_2-2-15The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team got back into the win column with an 80-48 win over the Canton C-Hawks on Tuesday, February 2nd, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers opened up the game on a 13-0 run, and held a 17-2 lead before ending the first quarter ahead 19-5.  Canton settled down in the second quarter and pulled within seven points after an 11-4 run.  The Quarriers responded and ended the first half leading 36-24.

The Dell Rapids offense found their rhythm in the third quarter as they went on a 18-6 run through most of the quarter.  The big shot for the Quarriers came when Zane Schumaker hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to give Dell Rapids a 59-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.  The Quarriers kept cruising offensively in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.

The Quarriers had a much improved offensive night from their last game, as Dell Rapids shot 59% (34-58) from the field, 29% (4-14) from the three-point area, and 67% (8-12) from the free-throw line.  They had 45 team rebounds, 21 assists on 34 made shots, six steals and turned the ball over 15 times.

Dell Rapids had three players in double figures, including two players with 20 points each.  Riley Schmidt and Ty Hoglund each finished the game with 20 points.  Hoglund also had eight rebounds and six assists.  Schmidt had four rebounds and three assists.  Ben Hammer finished the night with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots.  Sam White had eight points and four rebounds.  Tanner Heim added six points and seven points off the bench.  Schumaker ended the game with five points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Dell Rapids improves to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the Dak-12.  The Quarriers will travel to Tri-Valley High School to take on the Mustangs on Friday, February 6th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Beat Canton C-Hawks

DRHSvsCanton_GBB_2-2-15The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team defeated the Canton C-Hawks 52-36 on Tuesday, February 2nd, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarrier offense got things going in the middle of the first quarter after both teams struggled offensively to start the game.  After Dell Rapids scored the first basket of the game after three minutes, the Quarriers added 12 more to take a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Dell Rapids was able to push their lead to 13 points at 20-7 with 5:00 to go in the second quarter.  Canton was able to cut the lead to 10 points a couple of times in the quarter, but went into halftime trailing Dell Rapids 27-14.

Over the first three minutes of the third quarter, Canton went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 29-22.  However, the Quarriers outscored the C-Hawks 8-1 the rest of the quarter to extend their lead back to 14 points at the end of the third quarter.  Canton was never able to cut the lead to less than 10 points as the Quarriers earned another Dak-12 Conference win.

Dell Rapids improves to 9-6 on the year, and 7-2 in Dak-12 Conference games.  The Quarriers travel to Tri-Valley High School to take on the Mustangs in their next game on Friday, February 6th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Bridgewater/Emery Comes from Behind to Beat Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Bridgewater/Emery Huskies earned a come-from-behind win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team 45-38 on Monday, February 1st, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but couldn’t hang on for the win.

St Mary jumped out to a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, and pushed the lead to 10 with 7:40 to go in the first half, but the Huskies were able to tie the game by halftime at 19-19.  The Huskies held St Mary to just six points in the third quarter to take a 32-25 lead.  The largest lead for Bridgewater/Emery came with :42 to go in the third when they lead by nine points.  Bridgewater-Emery scored their last field goal with 3:34 to go in the game, but held on to beat the Cardinals.

St Mary was led by Ally Mullaney with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Lindsey Wolles tossed in nine points and grabbed four rebounds.  Jackie Wolles finished with four points in the game.  Kaitlyn Vortherms had three points, and Claudia Schwebach added four rebounds for the Cardinals.

St Mary shot 33% (13-39) from the field, 22% (2-9) from three-point area, and 71% (10-14) from the free-throw line in the game.  The Cardinals had 30 team rebounds, five assists, two steals and 15 turnovers as a team.

The Cardinals fall to 4-12 on the year.  St Mary will host the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, February 6th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Huskies Sneak Past Quarrier Girls for Second Time

NewDRLogoThe Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies escaped with a four-point win over the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls on Saturday, January 31st, at the Dak-12 Conference Classic in Lennox by a score of 37-33.

Dell Rapids got off to a slow start offensively as the Huskies got out to a 12-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Elk Point-Jefferson increased their lead to 14 points, but the Quarriers scored the final six points of the second quarter to make the score 25-17 at halftime.  The Quarriers continued their run to start the third quarter as they pulled within two points a couple of times in the quarter.  The Huskies were able to hold of Dell Rapids and ended the third quarter ahead 34-27.  Again in the fourth quarter the Quarriers had chances to tie the game, but couldn’t quite pull off the comeback as the Huskies held on for the win.

Brittney Siemonsma led the Quarriers with 10 points.  Lindsey Morris scored six points, and Mikaela Stofferahn finished with five points.  Elk Point-Jefferson was led by McKenzie Mennenga with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Dell Rapids falls to 8-6 on the year.  This is the second loss to a Dak-12 opponent this year for the Quarriers, both losses coming against Elk Point-Jefferson.  The Huskies beat Dell Rapids 43-41 on January 3rd.

Cardinal Girls Win Re-Match with Arlington

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls won the rematch against the Arlington Cardinals on Friday, January 30th.  St Mary defeated Arlington 44-38 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The win comes six days after Arlington beat St Mary at the girls Dakota Valley Conference Tournament in Elkton.

Arlington held an early lead in the first quarter by three points with 5:07 to go in the quarter, but that would be their largest lead of the night.  St Mary led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. St Mary extended their lead to 10 points, their largest of the game, with 2:19 to go in the half.  Arlington, however, cut the lead to 20-15 by halftime.  Arlington closed the gap to just one point by the end of the third quarter at 27-26.  St Mary was able to out-score Arlington 17-12 in the final quarter for the win.

St Mary was led by Lindsey Wolles with 13 points.  Ally Mullaney added 12 points and seven rebounds.  Kaitlyn Vortherms finished with nine points and four rebounds in the game.  St Mary shot 25% (10-4o) from the field, 33% (5-15) from three-point area, and 68% (19-28) from the free-throw line.

St Mary improves to 4-10 on the year.

Vermillion Hands Quarrier Boys First Loss

The Vermillion Tanagers took advantage of a tough shooting night for the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team, and the Tanagers gave the Quarriers their first loss of the season.  Vermillion beat Dell Rapids 58-49 on Thursday, January 29th, in Dell Rapids.

After a buzzer-beater three-point shot by Sheldon Siemonsma to end the first quarter, the Quarriers led 15-13.  However, Dell Rapids could not hold on to the lead.  Vermillion regained the lead heading into halftime at 28-25.  The Tanagers extended that lead to 37-31 by the end of the third quarter.  Vermillion knocked down most of their free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the night shooting just 19% (14-72) from the field, 24% (8-34) from three-point area, and 87% (13-15) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had a total of 43 rebounds, but only two assists as a team.  They also had four steals and turned the ball over seven times.

Zane Schumaker led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds, and one assist.  Ty Hoglund had 16 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Sheldon Siemonsma added six points, and Riley Schmidt finished with five points.  Ben Hammer had five rebounds and four blocked shots in the game.

Dell Rapids falls to 10-1 on the year and 6-1 in the Dak-12 Conference.  The Quarriers will host Canton on Tuesday, February 3rd as part of a double-header.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
