Three Pointers Fall for Quarrier Girls in Win

NewDRLogoFive different girls made three-point shots, nine different players scored, and two players finished in double figures as the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls scored the most points in a game all year in a 79-67 win over the Red Cloud Crusaders at the State A Tournament in Watertown on Friday.

Dell Rapids scored 20 or more points in two of the four quarters and outscored the Crusaders in every quarter.  The Quarriers led 21-17 after a high-scoring first quarter by both teams.  Dell Rapids extended the lead to 35-27 at halftime.  The Quarriers then scored 44 second half points on their way to the win.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 50% (22-44) from the field, 47% (7-15) from three-point area, and 76% (28-37) from the free-throw line.  The Crusaders finished 45% (25-56) from the field, 50% (11-22) from three-point area, and 35% (6-17) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids out-rebounded Red Cloud 39-23 in the ball game.

Mikaela Stofferahn led Dell Rapids with 27 points and eight rebounds.  Averi Pankonen added 10 points.  Emma Paul finished with nine points.  Arial Hoffman had eight points, six rebounds and three assists.  Lindsey Morris also ended the game with eight points.  Sami Reider, Kaylee Hennen, Hoffman, Pankonen, and Morris all made three-point shots in the game.

Dell Rapids will face Clark/Willow Lake in the Consolation Championship game for 5th/6th place on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. in their final game of the year.

Quarrier Girls Fall to MVP in Opening Round of State A

DRHSvsMVP_GBB_StateA1The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls couldn’t overcome a slow start offensively as they fell to the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans 55-36 in the opening round of the State A Tournament in Watertown.  Dell Rapids was held to just 15 points in the first two quarters as the Titans took a 31-15 halftime lead.  The Titans extended the lead to 46-26 by the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to outscore Mt Vernon/Plankinton 10-9 in the final quarter.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 32% (12-37) from the field, 22% (4-18) from the three-point area, and 53% (8-15) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers ended with 21 rebounds and turned the ball over eight times.  The Titans shot 54% (21-39) from the field, 38% (3-8) from three-point area, and 67% (10-15) from the free-throw line.  DRHSvsMVP_GBB_StateA2

Arial Hoffman led Dell Rapids with 11 points in the game.  Mikaela Stofferahn added 10 points and five rebounds.  Emma Paul tallied five points and pulled down seven rebounds.  The Titans had three players in double-figures led by Payleen O’Day with 19 points.  Megan Bultsma had 18 points, and Makaela Karst finished with 16 points.

Dell Rapids will play Red Cloud at 1:45 p.m. on Friday.

Quarrier Boys Punch Ticket to State A Tournament

DRHSBoysRegion3AChamps2The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys defeated the Madison Bulldogs in the Region 3A championship game held at the Elmen Center on Tuesday, March 10th.  The Bulldogs held a 10-5 lead with about 2:30 to go in the first quarter, but the Quarriers ended the quarter on a 6-1 run to grab a 16-11 lead at the first quarter break.  The second quarter featured runs by both teams.  Madison opened up the quarter on a 4-0 run to pull within a point.  Dell Rapids countered with a 5-0 run to take a 21-15 lead.  Madison’s Jordan Kisor capped off a 10-3 run with a three-point basket to give Madison a 25-24 lead with 1:20 to go in the half.  Ty Hoglund broke the run with a three-pointer of his own at the buzzer to give Dell Rapids the lead back at 27-25 at halftime.

The Quarriers were able to extend their lead to seven points a couple of times in the third quarter.  Madison was within four points with just :04 left in the third quarter before Zane Schumaker hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Quarriers a 43-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.  The Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run in the first minute and a half of the fourth quarter to pull within a point at 43-42.  Ben Hammer capped off a 5-0 run over the next minute with a layup and free throw to extend the lead back to six points.  Madison was within four points at 48-44 with their next basket, but that’s as close as they got the rest of the game as the Quarriers pulled away for a 59-49 win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 43% (19-44) from the field, 47% (9-19) from three-point area, and 86% (12-14) from the free throw line.  The Quarriers had 30 team rebounds, nine assists, and turned the ball over 11 times.  Madison, meanwhile, shot 32% (16-50) from the field and 67% (12-18) from the free-throw line.  The Bulldogs had 25 team rebounds and turned the ball over seven times. Ty Hoglund finished with a game high 23 points, 19 of those in the first half.  Zane Schumaker added 20 points, 18 of those in the second half, and also had eight assists.  Ben Hammer had six points and 12 rebounds.  Madison was led by Mason Leighton and Hunter Robson with 14 points each.

The Quarriers improve to 20-2 on the year and advance to the State A Tournament in Rapid City on March 19-21.  Dell Rapids will be the 3rd seed in the tournament and will play Mt Vernon/Plankinton in the opening round on Thurdsday night (March 19) at 8:45 p.m. cst / 7:45 p.m. mst.

Dell Rapids Lifters Particpate in State Meet

QuarriersDell Rapids sent 13 lifters to the 2015 South Dakota High School State Powerlifting Meet on Saturday, March 7th, in Madison.  Dell Rapids finished atop the A schools with 11 points, which tied them with Madison for the top spot.  Baltic finished with eight points.  Sioux Falls O’Gorman was the top AA school with 68 points followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln and Watertown with 25 points.

Four lifters finished in the top five of their respective weight classes.  Jill Nelsen finished fifth in the Nike Girls class with a total lift of 755 with a co-efficient of 3.9119.   Joel Brust finished fourth in the 165 weight class with a total lift of 1005 with a co-efficient of 6.1057.  Cole Van Duyn finished third in the 220 weight class with a total lift of 1095 with a co-efficient of 5.1896. Ty Hennen finished second in the 242 weight class with a total lift of 1365 with a co-efficient of 5.8433

Other lifter results for Dell Rapids were:

Quarrier Boys to Face Madison in Region Championship

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys had no trouble advancing to the Region 3A Championship game.  Dell Rapids led start to finish in an 82-54 win over the Flandreau Fliers on Friday, March 6th, at the Elmen Center.

The Quarriers jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead to open up the game and never looked back.  Dell Rapids led 22-10 at the end of the first quarter and had pushed the lead to 43-19 at halftime.  Dell Rapids did not slow down in the second half scoring 39 more points.  The Quarriers led 64-33 at the end of the third quarter and added 18 more points in the final quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 54% (32-59) from the field, 48% (10-21) from three-point area, and 80% (8-10) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 37 team rebounds, 20 assists, nine steals, and only 10 turnovers in the game.

Three players scored in double figures led by Ty Hoglund with 20 points and three assists.  Zane Schumaker had 14 points, five assists, and four steals.  Riley Schmidt finished with 12 points and six assists.  Adam Karst tossed in nine points to go with five steals, and Ben Hammer finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Dell Rapids will face rival Madison in the Region 3A Championship game on Tuesday, March 10th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Elmen Center.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Advance to State A Tournament

DRHSGirlsRegion3AChamps2The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls hung on for a 57-56 win over the Madison Bulldogs in the Region 3A Championship game to advance to the State A Tournament.  Dell Rapids held an early 7-6 lead with 3:10 to go in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs finished the quarter on a 9-5 run to take a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Quarriers trailed 18-12 early in the second quarter before holding Madison to just six more points while regaining the lead.  Dell Rapids held a 31-24 lead at halftime.

Madison put together a rally in the third quarter, cutting the Dell Rapids lead to 39-38 with :30 to go, but Emma Paul hit a shot with :04 on the clock to push the Dell Rapids lead to 41-38 at the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids led by nine points at 54-45 with 1:15 to go in the game, but Madison knocked down two three-pointers to pull within three points at 54-51.  Mikaela Stofferahn hit two free-throws with :41 to go to make it a two possession game at 56-51.  Stofferahn was again fouled after a Madison turnover with :25.6 left in the game.  She made one of two free-throws to give Dell Rapids a six point lead at 57-51.  The Bulldogs made a quick two-point shot with :18.1 remaining.  Dell Rapids turned the ball over with :08.5 to go, and Roz VandenBosch made a three-pointer with :01 to go.  However, Dell Rapids did not have to inbound the ball, and the Quarriers hung on to win and advance to the state tournament.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 46% (17-37) from the field and 67% (16-24) from the free-throw line.  Madison was 43% (21-49) from the field and 75% (6-8) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids finished with just six turnovers in the game.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “That is exactly what a Region game should be-wow! Madison has all the pieces, and they played hard and hit big shots, so it was a daunting task to hold them off and get the win.  I felt our girls really showed amazing poise and toughness.  I wasn’t sure that we were ready for a ‘big game’ such as this, but tonight we proved we were.”DRHSGirlsRegion3AChamps1

Stofferahn had 16 points and four assists.  Brittney Siemonsma had 10 points and three assists.  Arial Hoffman finished with 10 points and two steals.  Averi Pankonen and Paul each added nine points apiece in the game.

The Quarriers improve to 13-9 on the year.  Dell Rapids will enter the State A Tournament as the #7 seed and will have a re-match with Mt Vernon/Plankinton in the first round on Thurdsay, March 12th, at 6:00 p.m.  The State A Tournament is being played at the Watertown Civic Arena.

Third-Quarter Woes End Cardinal Boys Season

DRSM LogoAfter leading for most of the first half, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys only scored three points in the third quarter allowing Colman-Egan to earn a 47-39 come-from-behind win in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, March 2nd.

The Cardinals trailed early in the game, but went on a run in the first quarter to take a 10-7 lead at the quarter break.  St Mary extended that lead in the second quarter.  The Cardinals led by as many as seven points with :10 to go in the half before Colman/Egan cut the lead to 24-19 at halftime.

The Hawks held the Cardinals to just three points in third quarter while scoring 14 to retake the lead at 33-27 by the end of the third quarter.  The Hawks pushed their lead to 10 points with 4:21 to play.  The Cardinals rallied to close the gap, but they ran out of time as the Colman/Egan Hawks held on to advance to the semifinals.

St Mary finished the night shooting 32% (12-38) from the field in the game, but shot just 16% (3-19) in the second half.  The Cardinals were also 36% (4-11) from three-point area, and 61% (11-18) from the free-throw line.  Colman/Egan finished the game shooting 35% (18-52) from the field.

Christian Schneiders led the way for St Mary with 12 point, six rebounds, and four steals.  Ryan Welbig finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Noah Fiegen added six points and nine rebounds.  Ellis Howard led the Hawks with 12 points.

St Mary finishes their season with a 1-20 record.

Quarrier Girls Move on to Region 3A Championship

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team advance to the Region 3A championship game with a semi-final win over the Flandreau Fliers on Thursday, February 26th, at Tea Area High School.  The Quarrier defense was intense all game long as they held Flandreau to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.  The Quarriers held Flandreau to just six points in the first quarter helping Dell Rapids get out to a 16-6 lead.  It was a lead Dell Rapids would never lose.  The Quarriers added on to the lead in every quarter.

Dell Rapids led 27-14 at halftime.  Flandreau scored 13 points in the third quarter, but Dell Rapids was able to score 14 and pushed the lead to 41-27 at the end of the third quarter.  Flandreau scored the first few points of the fourth quarter, but were shut down by the Dell Rapids defense for the remainder of the quarter as the Quarriers pulled away for a 58-34 win.

The Quarriers shot 36% (17-47) from the field and 63% (17-27) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids turned the ball over 16 times and out-rebounded Flandreau 28-26.  Arial Hoffman led Dell Rapids with 18 points and two assists.  Mikaela Stofferahn added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Emma Paul finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Dell Rapids will face Madison in the championship game on Thursday, March 5th, at Lennox High School.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Season Ends with District Loss

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team had their season come to an end on Tuesday, February 24th, after a 58-40 loss to the Baltic Bulldogs in the first round of the District 7B tournament at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

St Mary got off to a slow start and could never recover as the Bulldogs outscored the Cardinals in every quarter.  Baltic took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, and then extended their lead to 23-16 by halftime.  St Mary was held to nine points in the third quarter and trailed Baltic 37-25.  Baltic outscored St Mary 21-15 in the final quarter.

The Cardinals finished the night shooting just 17% (10-59) from the field, 14% (3-21) from three-point area, and 77% (17-22) from the free-throw line.  Baltic shot 44% (20-46) from the field in the game.  The Cardinals out-rebounded the Bulldogs 38-34.  St Mary also had 22 turnovers in the game.

Ally Mullaney finished the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Jackie Wolles had eight points and five rebounds.  Lindsey Wolles added five points, and Kaitlyn Vortherms and Lexi Klein each had four points a piece.

The St Mary Cardinals finished their season with a record of 5-16.

Quarrier Boys Roll to Victory on Senior Night

DRHSvsDeu_BBB_2-23-15The four Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team seniors ended their regular season careers at Dell Rapids in style with an 84-44 win over the Deubrook Dolphins on Monday, February 23rd.  The defensive efforts in the second and fourth quarters paved the way for the victory for Dell Rapids.

Both teams came out of the gates on fire combining for 38 first quarter points.  Zane Schumaker hit a shot at the buzzer to give Dell Rapids a 22-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter, the Quarrier defense held Deubrook to just five points, while the offense scored 26, and Dell Rapids went into the locker room at halftime ahead 48-21.  Both teams again combined for 38 points in the third quarter, each scoring 19, and Dell Rapids maintained their 27-point lead at 67-40.  However, Dell Rapids held Deubrook to only four points in final quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids had another night of a 50%+ shooting percentage.  The Quarriers were 52% (33-64) from the field, 33% (7-21) from three-point area, and 82% (9-11) from the free-throw line.  The team had a total of 56 rebounds in the game, 19 assists, six steals, and six blocked shots.

Four players finished the game in double figures, and two players nearly had double-doubles.  Ty Hoglund had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Quarriers. Riley Schmidt added 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Ben Hammer had 12 points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Schumaker ended the night with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.  Adam Karst tossed in nine points and had 10 rebounds.  Tanner Heim had eight points and nine rebounds.  Giacomo Vantini led Deubrook with 20 points.

The Quarriers finish the regular season with an 18-2 record.  The Region 3A tournament will begin on Tuesday, March 3rd.  The Quarriers will receive a first-round bye and will play in the semi-finals on Friday, March 6th.
