Quarrier Boys Finish 2nd at State A Tournament

March 22, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRHSvsRoncalli_StateA2A last second shot at the buzzer fell just off the rim at the end of the game, and the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys finished as the 2015 State A Runner-Up.  The Roncalli Cavaliers held off the Quarriers 53-50 in the final boys basketball game of the season in Rapid City.

After Roncalli opened up the game with an 8-3 lead, Dell Rapids scored the next 10 points and took an 13-8 lead with 1:02 to go in the first quarter after a three-point field goal by Zane Schumaker.  Brayden McNeary knocked down a three-point shot with :35 to go to bring the Cavaliers to within two points at the end of the first quarter, 13-11.

The Quarriers extended their lead to four points after a three-pointer by Sheldon Siemonsma with 4:31 to go at 18-14.  Roncalli answered with the next five points.  Zach Hammerich knocked down a bucket with 3:20 to go to give Roncalli a 19-18 lead.  Siemonsma answered with another three-point shot 3o seconds later, and the lead went back to Dell Rapids at 21-19.  Roncalli, however, ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run, and the Cavaliers had a 26-21 lead at halftime.

The Cavaliers continued to push their lead into the second half, and with 3:53 to go in the third quarter, Roncalli had their largest lead of the night at 39-27.  Ty Hoglund made a pair of three-point field goals over the next three minutes to pull Dell Rapids within six at 39-33, but McNeary hit a shot with :03 left on the clock to give Roncalli a 41-33 advantage heading into the final quarter. DRHSvsRoncalli_StateA1

Roncalli started the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run, and with 6:33 to go in the game, the Cavaliers led 46-33.  Dell Rapids then started to make their come back.  The Quarriers scored the next six points, and with 4:46 to go, Dell Rapids trailed 46-39.  Hammerich made a two-point field goal for the Cavaliers to extend the Roncalli lead to 50-41 with 3:08 to go.  Dell Rapids then went on a 7-0 run, and Riley Schmidt capped off the run with a three-point basket with 1:47 to go.  Hammerich ended the run with a free-throw with :58 left in the game to push the lead to 51-48.  Schumaker answered with a layup with :45 to go to pull Dell Rapids within a point at 51-50.  McNeary was fouled with :25 to go and made both free throws to give Roncalli a three-point lead.  After a Dell Rapids miss at the other end, McNeary was again fouled with :10 to go.  He missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and Schumaker pulled down the rebound for Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers called timeout with :04.1 to go in the game.  The three-point shot at the buzzer from the top of the key was no good for Dell Rapids, and Roncalli hung on for the three-point win.

Dell Rapids finished the night shooting 32% (18-56) from the field, 22% (8-36) from three-point area, and 75% (6-8) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 37 team rebounds, 12 assists, and nine turnovers.  Roncalli finished 38% (20-53) from the field, 47% (7-15) from three-point area, and 60% (6-10) from the free-throw line.  The Cavaliers also had 37 rebounds, 15 assists and seven turnovers.
