De Smet Pulls Away from Cardinal Girls

The De Smet Bulldogs had votes to be ranked in the latest media poll and a 4-0 record coming into the game against the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Monday, December 20th.  The Cardinals were up to the task in front of a packed gym, but the Bulldogs slowly pulled away for the 54-43 win.

The atmosphere was electric, and the two teams traded blows in the first quarter.  St Mary ended the first quarter with a 16-15 lead.  The Bulldogs were able to build a seven-point lead, 26-19, in the second quarter.  St Mary was able to put a run together and pulled within a point, 30-29, by halftime.

After a fast-paced first half, the offenses slowed in the third quarter.  The two teams combined for a total of 16 points, and the Bulldogs slowly built a 40-35 advantage heading into the final quarter.  They extended their lead to 13 points, 50-37, which was too much to overcome for St Mary.

The Cardinals shot 28% (13-46) in the game.  They were just 16% (3-19) on three-point shots and 64% (14-22) from the free-throw line.  De Smet finished 44% (20-46) from the field, 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and 63% (10-16) from the free-throw line.  Both teams finished with 34 total rebounds each.

Courtney Brown had eight points, three rebounds, and an assist.  Madala Hanson also had eight points and three rebounds.  Brianna Griffin had six points, two rebounds, one steal, and one assist.  Whitney Warwick finished with six points and a rebound.  Ella Griffin added five points, one rebound, and one assist.  Addyson Gilbert tallied four points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

St Mary (2-2) will host Chester Area on Tuesday, December 28th for their next game.

Trojan Wrestling Finishes 2-1 at Home Quadrangular

The West Central Trojan wrestling team had three more duals at home on Monday, December 20th in what has been a busy month.  The Trojans faced Mitchell, Rapid City Central, and Sioux Falls Jefferson.

The Trojans defeated Rapid City Central (48-27) and Sioux Falls Jefferson (54-15), but fell to Mitchell (32-39).

Trojan Wrestling Competes in Madison Invite

The West Central Trojan boys and girls wrestling teams competed in the Madison Invitational on Saturday, December 18th.  The boys team finished fourth with a total of 132.5 points.  The girls team finished sixth among the girls teams and 17th overall with 44 points.

Alexa Bryant placed second in the G132 class with a 2-1 record on the day.  Allison Foote also placed second in the G285 class with a 2-1 record.  Hailey Fortney scored 10 points for the team with a 3-2 record.

Justin Zirpel won the 152-pound weight class finishing 3-0 in the tournament.  Karson Vessells was second in the 106-pound class with a 3-1 record.  Chandler Carda also placed second in the 126-pound class with a 2-1 record. Orlando Whiting was third in the 113-pound class finishing 3-1.  Keaton Vessells had a fourth place finish in the 138-pound class with a 2-2 record.  Gabe Gebhard also placed fourth in the 195-pound class finishing 2-3.  Jesse Jost was fifth in the 132-pound class with a record of 4-2.

Rayce Whiting (120-pound, 2-2), Connor Siemonsma (145-pound, 0-2), Chet Carda (182-pound, 0-2), Abram Maras (220-pound, 0-2), and Gavin Pischke (285-pound, 0-2) also participated in the tournament.

West Central Wins Two More Duals at Home

The West Central Trojan wrestling team won two more duals on Friday, December 17th.  The Trojans hosted Dell Rapids and Chamberlain, and the Trojans won both duals.  West Central defeated Dell Rapids 72 – 6 and defeated Chamberlain 45 – 30.

Mustang Boys Fall Short Against Garretson

Playing in their second game in less than 24 hours, the Tri-Valley Mustang boys basketball team lost to the Garretson Blue Dragons 44-36 on Saturday, December 18th.  This was a make-up game that was postponed from December 10th.

The offense for the Mustangs looked good in the first quarter.  They held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Tri-Valley pushed the lead to 26-19 at halftime, but then the offense went cold.  Tri-Valley was able to only get three points in the third quarter, and the Blue Dragons were able to tie the game 29-29 heading into the fourth quarter.  Garretson scored first to take a 31-29 lead and then continued to grow the lead throughout the quarter while holding the Mustangs to just seven fourth-quarter points.

Tri-Valley shot 30% (14-47) from the field, just 23% (3-13) from three-point area, and 5-9 from the free-throw line.  Garretson was 31% (17-55) from the field, made only one three-pointer, and was just 9-22 from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley turned the ball over 20 times, while Garretson only had eight turnovers.

Noah Haynes had 13 points and seven rebounds.  Cory McDonald finished with six points and 11 rebounds.  Lance DeWitt had six points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Brayden Oyen added five points.

The Mustangs (1-3) will travel to Vermillion on Tuesday, December 21st.

Tri-Valley Wrestling Finishes Seventh at EPJ Huskies Invite

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team finished seventh as a team at the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies Invitational tournament on Saturday, December 18th.  The Mustangs finished with 75.0 points.  Canton won the tournament with a team score of 251.0.  Pierre was second followed by West Sioux.

Five different wrestlers placed in the tournament.  Cole Hendrixson finished third in the 106-pound class with a tournament record of 4-1.  Mason Hendrixson also placed third in the 170-pound class with a 4-1 record.  Isaac Nehlich was third in the 220-pound class with a 3-1 record.  Brody Dybvig was fourth in the 126-pound weight class finishing 2-2 on the day.  Treyson Richter placed fifth in the 113-pound class with a record of 1-2.

Lawson Loiseau (145-pound, 0-2) and  Zach Powell (152-pound, 0-2) also competed in the tournament.

Tri-Valley will be at a Dak XII quadrangular in Tea on Tuesday, January 4th.

Mustangs Split First Home Doubleheader of Season

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball teams hosted the Chester Flyers in the first home doubleheader of the 2021-2022 season on Friday, December 17th.  The girls took the win over the Flyers 66-45.  The Mustang boys lost 42-36.

Tri-Valley 66, Chester 45 – Girls

The Mustangs started fast and held an early 8-1 lead in the first quarter.  Chester then had an 8-0 run to take a 9-8 lead.  The Mustangs finished the quarter on an 9-3 run for a 17-12 lead after the first quarter.  Chester regained the lead 25-24, but again Tri-Valley went on a run.  The Mustangs closed the half on a 9-2 run for a 33-27 halftime lead.

Tri-Valley then had a big third quarter.  The Mustangs outscored the Flyers 22-7 in the third quarter for a 55-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The two teams both scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Tri-Valley was 32% (24-74) from the field, 18% (5-28) from three-point area, and 59% (13-22) from the free-throw line.  Chester shot just 23% (12-52) from the field, 25% (5-20) from three-point area, but 67% (16-24) from the free-throw line.  The Mustangs forced 20 turnovers, including 15 steals.

Paige Jewett had 22 points and three rebounds.  Lauren Grinde had 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and five steals.  Ava Pearson had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Madelyn Wenzel added 10 points and seven rebounds.  Steph Buchmann ended with nine points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Chester 42, Tri-Valley 36 – Boys

The Mustangs held a 10-point lead late in the third quarter, but the Flyers pulled off the comeback for a 42-36 win.  Tri-Valley led 5-0 early, but Chester went on a 9-0 run for a 9-5 lead.  The Mustangs cut the lead down to 12-11 by the end of the first quarter.  Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, and Tri-Valley led 18-15 at halftime.

After Chester scored the first three points of the third quarter to tie the game 18-18, Tri-Valley went on a 10-0 run for a 28-18 lead.  The Mustangs led 31-21 with 1:00 to play in the third quarter.  The Flyers comeback started by scoring the final four points of the third quarter to make the score 31-25.  Chester then outscored Tri-Valley 17-5 in the final quarter for the win.

Tri-Valley shot just 25% (14-56) from the field, 23% (7-31) from three-point area, and just 1-5 on free-throws.  The Fyers were 32% (15-47) from the field, 27% (4-15) from three-point area, and 50% (8-16) from the free-throw line.

Cory McDonald had 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Lance DeWitt finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.  Noah Haynes had four points, 15 rebounds, and three steals.  Connor Christensen had four points and three rebounds.  Brayden Oyen had three points, and Owen Besmer finished with two points and six rebounds.

Tri-Valley Falls to West Central in Wrestling Dual

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team traveled to Hartford for a dual with the West Central Trojans on Thursday, December 16th.  The Mustangs only won two weight class matches in a 67-11 loss.

Mason Hendrixson had a technical fall win, and Isaac Nehlich had a pin.

Leland Triebwasser

Leland Triebwasser, 89, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at the Avera Dells Area Hospital. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 27, 2021 at The Reformed Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2021 with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home. www.kahlerhfh.com

Leland Triebwasser was born on May 22, 1932 on the family farm near Emery, SD, the son of Edward and Lydia (Koth) Triebwasser. He grew up near Emery and attended country school and helped on the family farm. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. After discharge he returned to the family farm. He married Wilma Gerlach on December 18, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hillside. The couple made their home on a farm near Fulton from 1957-1972. In 1972, the couple moved to a farm north of Dell Rapids. On January 5, 2000, they moved to Dell Rapids. Leland continued to farm.

He was a member of The Reformed Church and was on the church consistory.

Leland enjoyed farming and family gatherings, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with the love of his life Wilma. Their journey began December 18, 1957 and ended exactly 64 years later on December 18, 2021.

Leland is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wilma of Dell Rapids; his children, Twila (Bruce) Kruger of Sioux Falls, Tamara (George) Birmingham of Sioux Falls, Terry of Dell Rapids, Teresa (Daniel) Ernesti of Dell Rapids, Trudy (Kevin) Alberts of Dell Rapids and Thelma (Gary) Haak of Dell Rapids; his 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lovella (Milton) Schrader, Mabel Triebwasser and Geraldine Rickmeyer; one sister-in-law, Irene Gerlach and one brother-in-law, Vernon (Charlene) Gerlach and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his four sisters, Leona Frey, Bernitha Triebwasser, Lucille Klock and Irene Triebwasser; two brothers, Kenneth Triebwasser and Eldon (in infancy); 5 brothers-in-law, Harm Frey, Fred Klock, Earl Rickmeyer, Alfred Hohn and Norman Beiswanger; three sisters-in-law, Kathy Triebwasser, Esther Hohn and Anita Beiswanger.

Cardinal Girls Get Win over Quarriers at Entringer Classic

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Dell Rapids Quarriers did battle at the Entringer Classic at Colman-Egan High School on Saturday, December 18th.

The Quarriers had the hot hand in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids held a 19-13 lead over St Mary after the first quarter.  The Cardinal defense held the Quarriers to just six points in the second quarter as St Mary took the lead at halftime 26-25.  The Cardinals continued to outscore Dell Rapids in the second half.  The St Mary lead grew to 42-36 at the end of the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals again had the scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, 12-6.

St Mary was 36% (20-55) from the field, 27% (7-26) from three-point area, and 41% (7-17) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers shot 31% (14-45) from the field, 35% (6-17) from three-point area, and 67% (8-12) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers won the rebounding battle, 42-29.  The Cardinal defense forced 22 turnovers in the game.

Madala Hanson had 21 points, five rebounds, and six steals to lead the Cardinals.  Maya Heinitz had 10 points.  Courtney Brown added seven points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Whitney Warwick had six points, and Brianna Griffin finished with five points.

Claire Wynja had 17 points, nine rebounds, a steal and an assist for the Quarriers.  Jayme Schmidt had 10 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Zoey Hilmoe finished with six points, eight rebounds, and a steal.  Haileigh Barnhart had three points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

Hanson from St Mary was named the game’s MVP.
