A 9-0 run to start the game sparked a big first quarter run that led to a Quarrier victory over the Vermillion Tanagers.  Dell Rapids earned a Dak-12 Conference win at home over the Tanagers 64-52 on Thursday, January 30th.

The 9-0 run over the first three and a half minutes of the game was part of a big lead the Quarriers built in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids led 19-7 with just over a minute to play and finished the first quarter leading 22-11.  The Quarriers led by double digits most of the second quarter and by as many as 14 points.  Vermillion cut the lead down to ten points at 33-23 at halftime.

The Tanagers went on a little run in the third quarter and cut the Dell Rapids lead to 36-31 with 5:00 to go in the quarter.  The Quarriers responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to 11 points at 42-31 with 3:15 to go.  Vermillion ended the quarter on a 6-2 run, and Dell Rapids led 44-37 heading into the fourth.  Dell Rapids started the fourth quarter on a 8-2 run in the first four minutes to lead 52-39 with 4:00 to go in the game.  That run put the game out of reach for Vermillion as they were unable to get any closer than 10 points the rest of the game.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 50% (27-54) from the field, 42% (8-19) from three-point area, but just 25% (2-8) from the free-throw line.  They also had a total of 32 team rebounds, 15 team assists, and only seven turnovers.

Flood Concerns Already High for Spring

January 29, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Despite nearly two more months of winter on the calendar, officials are already issuing outlooks suggesting more flooding in the area is likely.  This is due to rivers, lakes, and streams being full along with the ground being saturated from last year prior to the start of winter.

The National Weather Service released a graphical outlook of likely flooding scenarios.  Currently the prediction for the most likely scenario, which would be a “normal end of winter”, would have minor and major flooding along the Big Sioux River.   The river levels around Dell Rapids are shown to have a greater than 50% chance of major flooding.  If a “drier end of winter” scenario happens, the river levels around Dell Rapids are predicted for a greater than 90% of minor flooding.

Another probability graph by the National Weather Service shows a 25-50% chance of moderate flooding (14.0′) of the Big Sioux River in Dell Rapids from the mid-March to mid-April time frame.  That same graph shows a 10-25% chance of major flooding (15.0′).  (https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/probability_information.php?wfo=fsd&gage=ders2)

No matter the outcome of the rest of this winter, the message from leaders is the same.  People need to be prepared for another round of flooding this spring.

Most of the first quarter was close and back-and-fourth with two ties and three lead changes.  St Mary held a slim 10-9 lead with 1:30 to play in the quarter.  They then went on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter leading 18-9.  Baltic scored the first five points of the second quarter to pull within four points at 18-14 with 5:00 to go in the half.  The Cardinals responded by holding the Bulldogs to just four points the rest of the quarter to increase their lead to 28-18 at halftime.

The St Mary lead grew to 13 points at 31-18 with 5:45 to go in the third quarter.  Baltic cut the lead into single digits throughout the quarter as both defenses played tough in the third quarter.  The Cardinals maintained a 34-26 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Baltic offense got going early in the fourth quarter, and after a made three-point shot by Kylie Schneider with 5:00 to go in the game, the Bulldogs were within two points at 36-34.  That’s when Brown took control.  Brown made 13 of her 15 points of the quarter in the final 5:00 minutes of the game to spark the Cardinals fourth-quarter run for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Brown finished with a game-high 16 points.  Ella Heinitz had 13 points.  Ella Griffin finished with 10 points, and Karlie Klein had five points.  Baltic was led by Sami Polzin with nine points, Schneider with eight points, and Cami Artz with six points.
