Cougars Defeat Dell Rapids in Volleyball Action

The Dell Rapids Quarriers have played a lot of volleyball over the last week, and they played in their second straight match in as many days on Tuesday, September 29th.  Going back to Thursday, September 24th, this was the seventh match in less than week. 

The Quarriers entertained the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars, and the Cougars won in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-19.

Dell Rapids, as they have done many times this season, got off to a fast start in the opening set.  After the Cougars got the first point, the Quarriers scored six in a row for a 6-1 lead.  Dell Rapids kept about a three point lead and led 10-7 early.  The Cougars were able to take the lead 16-15 and pushed the lead to 19-15 on the way to the 25-20 victory.

The Quarriers scored the first two points of the second set, but McCook Central/Montrose scored nine straight points for a 9-2 lead.  Dell Rapids was able to pull within two points at 23-21, but the Cougars scored the final two for the 25-21 win.

Dell Rapids got out to an early lead again in the third set at 8-4.  The Quarriers pushed the lead to 14-7 and then to 16-8.  The Cougars, however, scored 12 straight points for a 20-16 lead and went on to take the set 25-19 to win the match.

Kenzie Garry had 10 kills on the night.  Emma Van Regenmorter had seven kills, and Kylee Fiddelke finished with six kills.  Sophi Randall had 23 set assists.  Van Regenmorter had seven blocks.  Randall had five blocks, and Oliva Prasek and Fiddelke both had three blocks.  Sam Price led the team with 15 digs.  Fiddelke had 13 digs, and Mackenzie Apland had 10 digs.

Dell Rapids (2-11) will play at Lennox on Thursday, October 1st.

Trojan Volleyball Wins Third Straight

The West Central Trojans won their third straight match on Tuesday, September 29th.  West Central hosted the Canton C-Hawks and won the match in four sets.

The Trojans got the win in the first set to start the match by a score of 25-22.  They were able to put the pressure on Canton with a second set win of 25-21.  The C-Hawks were able to extend the match by taking the third set by a score of 22-25.  The Trojans ended the match by winning the fourth set by a score of 25-17.

Cassidy Siemonsma had a match-high 17 kills along with two blocks and three ace serves.  Rachel Bucher added nine kills.  Brooke Opitz had a big night with 40 set assists and 13 digs.  Jenna Leuth had 14 digs and four ace serves.

West Central (6-7) will play the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars in Montrose on Thursday, October 8th for their next match.

Girls 4th, Boys 5th for West Central Cross Country

The West Central Trojan cross country team ran at the Sioux Valley Invite at Meadow Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, September 29th.

The girls team placed 4th with a team score of 67.  Flandreau was first with 26 points.  Great Plains Lutheran was second with 57 points.  De Smet placed third with 60 points.

Reagan Stallman (15th) had a time of 21:58.32.  Abbie Cain (17th) finished at 22:30.90.  Drew Caffrey (18th) had a time of 22:34.18.  Kaylyn Kunz (20th) had a time of 22:37.45.  Sayda Rolfson (21st) finished in 22:46.65.  Paige Pilker (31st) had a time of 23:20.84.  Elizabeth Johnson (43rd) completed in a time of 24:14.80.

The boys team had a fifth place finish with 80 points.  Clark/Willow Lake was first with 32 points.  Madison placed second with 51 points.  Flandreau was third with 60 points.

Justin Schumacher (9th) had a time of 18:38.88.  Ben Strunk (18th) completed in 19:10.17.  Jonathon Roth (27th) had a time of 19:51.20.  Blake Stark (44th) finished with a time of 20:58.29.

West Central will be in Lennox on Thursday, October 1st for the Lennox Invitational.

Quarrier Cheer 7th at O’Gorman

The Dell Rapids Quarier competitive cheer team performed in their seventh competition of the season on Tuesday, September 29th.  Dell Rapids was in Sioux Falls for the O’Gorman Invite.  Eleven teams between Class A and AA took part in the event.

The Quarriers placed seventh overall with a score of 188.5 points.  That point total was second among the Class A schools.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt was first with a score of 289.5.  O’Gorman placed second with 273 points.  Harrisburg was third at 271 points, and Sioux Valley was fourth with 267 points.  Deubrook and Dakota Valley were the other two Class A teams at the event, and they finished eighth and ninth respectively.

Dell Rapids will be in Brandon for the Brandon Valley Invite on Tuesday, October 6th.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins “Dell Rapids Battle” over Quarriers

Monday, September 29th, was the first of three battles between the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Dell Rapids Quarriers this season.  This first match-up was on the volleyball court at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The schools came together to provide a fun atmosphere for the teams.

The first set started back-and-forth with neither team getting a lead bigger than two points.  The Quarriers made a run of four straight with the score tied 9-9 to take a 13-9 lead.  The Cardinals were able to tie the set at 16-16 and then took a short 19-18 lead.  Dell Rapids then scored the next seven points for the 25-19 win.

The Cardinals and Quarriers battled back-and-forth again to start the second set.  The two teams were tied 7-7, but this time the Cardinals made the first run outscoring the Quarriers 6-1 for a 13-8 lead.  Dell Rapids chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 16-16.  They then took the lead 19-16.  Dell Rapids continued to lead by three at 21-18, but this time the Cardinals went on the late set run scoring the final seven points for a 25-21 victory to even the match.

After falling behind 3-1 early, St Mary continued to thrive on the momentum from the second set and went on a 7-0 run to lead 8-3.  The Quarriers stopped the run and scored five straight of their own to tie the set at 8-8.  St Mary then went ahead at 16-11 and continued roll winning the third set 25-13.

The fourth set was close early again as the two teams were tied 5-5.  The Quarriers looked to take momentum scoring eight points in a row for a 13-5 lead.  Dell Rapids still held a seven-point lead at 18-11, but the Cardinals started to make a run.  They cut the lead to 18-14.  The Quarriers responded with a mini 3-1 run to push the lead back to 21-15.  St Mary got hot scoring the next six points to tie the set at 21-21, and then finished the set 4-1 to win the set at 25-22 to win the match.

Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 18 kills.  She also finished with 14 digs and 13 set assists.  Courtney Brown had 14 kills and seven digs.  Maya Heinitz had a team-high 15 digs and four ace serves.  Ella Griffin had a team-high 15 set assists along with six digs.

Emma Van Regenmorter led the Quarriers with 10 kills in the match.  Kylee Fiddelke had nine kills, and Kenzie Garry had six kills.  Sophi Randall had a match-high 27 set assists.  Van Regenmorter had a match-high nine blocks.  Randall also had six blocks and eight ace serves.  Four players finished in double-figure digs for Dell Rapids.  Sam Price had 21 digs, Garry had 16, Randall added 12, and Fiddelke finished with 11 digs.

St Mary (6-2) will travel to Baltic on Tuesday, September 29th and then to Lake Preston on Thursday, October 1st.

Dell Rapids (2-11) will host McCook Central/Montrose on Tuesday, September 29th and then travel to Lennox on Thursday, October 1st.

Tri-Valley Falls in Five Sets to Baltic

The Tri-Valley Mustangs hosted the Baltic Bulldogs in a big Region 3A matchup on Monday, September 29th.  The Bulldogs were able to get the victory over the Mustangs in five sets.

Baltic took the first two sets by close scores.  The Bulldogs won the first set 25-21 and then won the second set 25-23.  Tri-Valley was able to win the next two sets to force the fifth and final set.  The Mustangs won the third and fourth sets by the same 25-15 score.  Baltic, however, prevailed in the fifth set and won by a score of 15-8 to win the match.

Blayne Gacke had a match-high 17 kills.  Jessica Masgai finished with 11 kills.  Brookelyn Stieben had 16 set assists, and Grace Schildhauer had 14 set assists.  Tabor Teel led the back-row defense with 17 digs.  Gacke added 13 digs.  Masgai and Abbie Weinacht both had two blocks each.  Gacke and Schildhauer each had three ace serves.

Tri-Valley (5-4) will host the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars on Thursday, October 1st.

West Central Volleyball Gets Big Road Win at Sioux Valley

With the 2020 season hitting the midway mark, the West Central Trojan volleyball team notched a big road victory on Monday, September 29th.  West Central defeated the Sioux Valley Cossacks in a four-set match.

The Trojans were able to take the first set of the match after a run midway through.  Leading 13-10, the Trojans extended the lead to 21-13 and took the set 25-17.

The second sent went back and forth as neither team was able to get more than a four point advantage.  Sioux Valley led 22-19, but the Trojans were able to tie the score at 22-22.  The Cossacks were at set point leading 24-23, but West Central scored the next three points for the 26-24 win.

After the third set was tied 5-5, Sioux Valley was able to get on a run and went ahead by double digits at 21-11 before taking the third set 25-14 to avoid the straight-set sweep.

The Trojans bounced back in the fourth set after it was tied early.  The two teams were locked at 6-6 before West Central locked down Sioux Valley and held them to just seven more points.  The Trojans took the set, and the match, with a 25-13 victory.

Cassidy Siemonsma led the team with 11 kills on the night.  Aubree Miller finished with eight kills, and Grace Harden had seven kills.  McKenna Sichmeller had three ace serves.   Brooke Opitz had 28 set assists.  Siemonsma also had a team-high 18 digs on the night.  Taylor Kunzweiler had 14 digs, and Opitz added 10 digs.

Mustang Golf Places 3rd at Regions, Team Qualifies for State

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys golf team placed third overall at the Region 1A golf tournament, thus qualifying the whole team for the 2020 Class A State Golf Tournament.  This is the first time in school history that the entire team has qualified for the state tournament.

The Region 1A tournament was held at Dakota Winds Golf Course on Monday, September 29th.

Tri-Valley finished with with a team score of 375.  Aberdeen Roncalli placed fist wtih a score of 348, and Madison was second with a score of 366.

Josh Leiseth placed fourth with a round of 83.  Braden Miller was seventh after a round of 88.  Lance DeWitt finished 25th individually with a round of 100.  Riley Carlson had a 104, and Cole Foken finished with a 115.

“Being the first team in school history to qualify as a team is pretty amazing,” said head coach Brandon DeWitt.

The Mustangs will head west for the state tournament.  State will be held Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.

Dell Rapids Boys Golf Sends Three to State

The Dell Rapids Quarriers had three golfers qualify for the 2020 Class A State Tournament after their play in the Region 1A Tournament.  The regional tournament was held at Dakota Winds golf course on Monday, September 29th.

Zach McKee, Brady Larson, and Lucas Berg all qualified by placing in the top 60% of the individual entries at regions.  McKee had a 10th place finish with a round of 90.  Larson placed 26th with a round of 101.  Berg also made the state tournament cut with a 28th place finish by shooting a 102.

The Quarriers placed sixth as a team with a score of 407.  The top three teams also qualify the whole team to state.  Aberdeen Roncalli placed first at 348, Madison was second at 366, and Tri-Valley finished third as a team with a score of 375.

The state golf tournament will be held on Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.

St Mary Girls 4th, Boys 1st at Hosted Cross Country Meet

The Dell Rapids St Mary cross country team hosted their St Mary Cross Country Invite on Monday, September 29th.

The girls finished fourth as a team with 35 points.  Colman-Egan placed first with 13 points.  Centerville was second with 20 points, and Arlington was third with 22 points.

Addy Gilbert had an eighth place finish with a time of 22:49.  Lucy Vargas was 13th with a time of 23:25.  Lauren Rasmussen was 14th at 23:48.  Sierra Klein placed 21st with a time of 25:00, and Sydney Klein was 25th at 27:18.

The boys team placed first with six total points by taking the top three spots individually.  Chester was second with 18 points.

Jacob Vogel won the race with a time of 17:47.  Thomas Eining was second at 19:29.  Seth Roemen placed third in a time of 20:11.  Noah Reiff had a sixth place finish at 20:55.  Owen Vargas was 15th at 21:39.

The Cardinals will be at the Colman-Egan Invite on Wednesday, September 30th.
