Nelson Cinches Win for Quarrier Boys

Carter Nelson made a three-point shot in the right corner with second remaining in the game to turn a one-point lead into a four-point for the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Tuesday, February 16th.  Dell Rapids used a big fourth quarter rally to get a 55-51 win over the Sisseton Redmen.

The Quarriers had a couple of quarters where shots didn’t fall for them.  The first quarter was one of those as Dell Rapids scored just eight points and trailed 10-8 at the first break.  They seemed to get the offense going in the second quarter and outscored Sisseton 16-11 for a 24-21 halftime lead.

Sisseton came out of the break on fire and scored the first eight points of the third quarter in a matter of minutes for a 29-24 lead.  Dell Rapids got within two points at 35-33, but the Redmen ended the quarter leading 42-35.  Dell Rapids kept chipping away at the lead in the fourth quarter and finally tied the game, 45-45, on a made three-pointer by Avery Boechler with 3:25 to play.  The two teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes.  Colin Rentz made the go-ahead layup with 1:20 to play to give the Quarriers a 52-51 lead.  After a missed three-point shot by Sisseton, the Quarriers got the ball back with :41 to go.  Colin Rentz drove into the lane with seconds remaining on the shot clock, and Nelson drained the three-pointer with :06 on the clock to secure the win.

Brayden Pankonen led the team in scoring with 18 points and had three rebounds.  Colin Rentz had 16 points, five rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Connor Rentz finished with eight points and four rebounds, and Nelson had five points and four rebounds.

Dell Rapids (12-6) will travel to Lennox on Friday, February 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall on the Road at Centerville

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls hit a five minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter which helped the Centerville Tornadoes get a 53-45 win on Tuesday, February 16th.

St Mary found themselves down six points after the first quarter at 11-5.  Centerville added to that lead in the second quarter and held a 23-15 halftime advantage.  The Cardinals got into a groove midway through the third quarter.  They erased the eight-point halftime deficit and held a 32-31 lead heading into the final quarter.  St Mary extended their lead to six points, 41-35, after a made three-pointer by Ella Griffin with 5:30 to play.  The Cardinals did not score for the next five minutes.  Centerville used that drought to take the lead back and push it to eight points at 49-41.  Madala Hanson made a free-throw to cut the lead to 49-42 with :28 left in the game.  The Tornadoes made all eight of their free throws in the fourth quarter to take the win.

The Cardinals shot 32% (17-53) from the field, 32% (6-19) from three-point area, and five-for-six from the free-throw line.  They had 24 team rebounds, 13 team assists, but turned the ball over 13 times.

Griffin led the team in scoring with 13 points and also had three rebounds and three steals.  Courtney Brown had 10 points three rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Addyson Gilbert, Ella Heinitz, and Karlie Klein all had four points each.

St Mary (13-6) will finish the regular season at home against Elk Point-Jefferson on Thursday, February 18th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

West Central Girls and Boys Post Big Wins over Canton

Both the West Central Trojan girls and boys basketball teams had big wins over the Canton C-Hawks in a double-header at home on Tuesday, February 16th.  The girls won 68-42 while the boys had a 73-43 win.

The Trojan girls got off to a quick start in the opening quarter and led 23-9 by the end of the quarter.  The lead continued to grow in the second quarter, and West Central led 45-21 at halftime.  The Trojans outscored Canton 23-21 in the second half with a quite a few of the C-Hawks points coming in the final minutes of the game.

Addy Kramer had 22 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the game.  Cassidy Siemonsma finished with 12 points and five rebounds.  Josslin Jarding had nine points, and Molli Thornton finished with eight points.  Every player for the Trojans recorded at least one rebound in the game.

The West Central boys also got out to a fast start in their game, but their quarter was the second quarter.  The Trojans led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.  They then outscored Canton 21-6 for a 40-13 halftime lead.  The Trojans were able to cruise from there in the second half for the win.

Kasan Abedi had 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Grafton Stroup also had 16 points along with four rebounds and three steals.  Derrick Eich added nine points.  Derek Eidsness had a team-high five rebounds.  Jacob Krempges had four assists and three steals in the game.

The West Central girls improved to 17-2 and will finish their regular season at home against Baltic on Thursday, February 18th.  The boys team improved to 10-6 and they will be on the road at McCook Central/Montrose also on Thursday, February 18th.

Second Quarter Key to Mustang Boys Win

The second quarter proved to be the difference in a Tri-Valley Mustang win over the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars on Tuesday, February 16th.

Tri-Valley found themselves down a point at the end of the first quarter 13-12, but outscored the Cougars 19-9 in the second quarter.  Tri-Valley held a 31-22 lead at halftime, and the second quarter scoring difference helped the Mustangs to victory.  Tri-Valley pushed their lead to 18 points with 3:19 left in third quarter only to see the Cougars cut it down to 10 by the end of the quarter, 46-36.  McCook Central/Montrose was only able to cut into the lead by two points in the fourth quarter.

Four players finished in double figures in scoring for Tri-Valley.  Riley Haynes led the way with 15 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Tyler Johnson had 12 points and seven rebounds.  Bryce Kienast had 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Nick Hass also had 11 points along with three rebounds.  Lance Dewitt finished with nine points.

The Mustangs improve to 8-9 on the season and will host Beresford on Friday, February 19th.

Vanhyfte Performs at State for Trojan Gymnastics

The West Central Trojan gymnastics team was represented by 8th-grader Maya Vanhyfte at the 2021 State A competition in Watertown on Friday, February 12th.

Vanhyfte competed in the floor exercise earning a score of 8.250.

Head coach Tricia Smith said, “Maya’s routine on floor was great. Averi Schmeichel has helped her polish the routine over the last couple of weeks, with obvious results. All of the seniors accompanied Maya to the meet and warmed up alongside her when possible. This helped her relax and feel more confident. We are all very proud of her and look forward to seeing her progress through her gymnastics career.”

Rally Falls Short for Mustang Girls Against MCM

The Tri-Valley Mustangs were able to cut a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit down to six against the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars, but the rally fell short as the Cougars won 64-56 on Monday, February 15th.

The first quarter action was back-and-forth as the two teams traded made baskets all quarter long.  The game was tied 18-18 at the end of the first quarter.  The Cougars got on a hot streak in the second quarter, making half of their total three-pointers for the game in the quarter.  McCook Central/Montrose was able to build a 41-34 halftime lead.

The Cougars continued to extend the lead in the third quarter making three more three-pointers and led 56-44 heading into the final quarter.  Tri-Valley rallied in the fourth quarter and cut the lead down to six points with minutes remaining.  The Mustangs had some good looks offensively to try to tie the game, but the shots just didn’t fall as the Cougars hung on for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for the Mustangs.  Paige Jewett had 19 points, three rebounds, and three steals.  Tabor Teel had 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists.  Blayne Gacke added 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Steph Buchmann had eight points, three steals, and two assists.

Tri-Valley (9-9) will host Lennox on Thursday, February 18th.

Milbank Uses Fourth Quarter Run to Beat Mustang Boys

A big fourth quarter run by the Milbank Bulldogs led to a 68-59 win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs in Milbank on Saturday, February 13th.

The game was very close through the first three quarters of the game.  The two teams ended the first quarter tied 19-19.  Milbank had a slim three-point lead at halftime 32-29.  The lead stayed at three points at the end of the third quarter, 50-47.

Milbank then started the fourth quarter on a 14-0 run.  The Bulldgos led 64-47 with 4:35 to go in the game.  That deficit was too much for the Mustangs to overcome.

Riley Haynes finished with 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Tyler Johnson had 13 points and nine rebounds.  Bryce Kienast had seven points, four rebounds, and two assists.

Tri-Valley shot 38% (20-53) from the field, 35% (8-23) from three-point area, and 58% (11-19) from the free-throw line.  The Mustangs had 30 team rebounds and 12 steals, but had 14 turnovers in the game.

Tri-Valley Girls Win Afternoon Game in Milbank

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls basketball team traveled to Milbank on Saturday, February 13th.  The game started a bit earlier than normal for a regular season double-header game, but the Mustangs overcame the early start time and first half shooting slump to get a 52-35 road victory.

The Mustangs shot just 26% in the first half (8-31), made just one of eleven three-point attempts and were four-of-eight from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley held a 7-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime.

Tri-Valley was able to regroup at halftime and find their offensive stride.  The Mustangs outscored Milbank 17-11 in the third quarter for a 38-27 lead heading into the fourth.  They then held the Bulldogs to just eight fourth-quarter points to take the victory.

The Mustangs shot better in the second half to finish the game at 37% (19-51) from the field, 22% (4-18) from three-point area, and 56% (10-18) from the free-throw line.

Kaitlyn Mohnen had 10 points, eight rebounds, and six steals.  Tabor Teel also had 10 points along with two rebounds, and two assists.  Paige Jewett finished with nine points, and Lauren Grinde had eight points and three rebounds.

Cardinal Girls Rally in Fourth for Win over ORR

The shooting percentage for both teams was about as cold as the air outside on Monday, February 15th at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals defeated the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders 43-31.

Both teams finished under 30% shooting for the game in a tough shooting night as the two teams fought back and forth through three quarters.  The game was tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter.  St Mary held a one-point lead at 13-12 at halftime.

The Cardinals started the third quarter on a 5-0 run for an 18-12 lead.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland responded with a 10-0 run to for a 22-18 advantage.  St Mary went on another run, this time 6-0, to regain the lead 24-22.  The third quarter ended in a 26-26 time.  The Raiders scored the first point of the fourth quarter for a 27-26 lead with 6:30 to play.  St Mary’s offense finally got going at that point in the game and went on a 14-0 run for a 40-27 lead with 1:45 to play and secure the win.

St Mary shot 29% (15-52) from the field, 26% (6-23) from three-point area, and 58% (7-12) from the free-throw line.  The Raiders finished the game shooting 24% (12-51) from the field, 18% (3-17) from three-point area, and 57% (4-7) from the free-throw line.

Ella Griffin had 13 points to lead the Cardinals scoring.  Ella Heinitz had 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Courtney Brown had six points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Karlie Klein had a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Cardinals (13-5) will play in Centerville on Tuesday, February 16th.   The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Trojans Give St Thomas More First Loss of Season

The #3 ranked West Central Trojans hosted the #1 St Thomas More Cavaliers on Saturday, February 13th.  The Trojans gave the Cavaliers their first loss of the season with a 60-53 victory.

The Trojans opened the game on a 10-1 run in the first 3:30 of the opening quarter.  St Thomas More responded with a 10-3 run and closed out the quarter trailing the Trojans 13-11.  The Cavaliers took the lead 16-15 with 5:05 to play in the first half, but West Central ended the first half leading 25-21.

The Cavaliers took the lead again late in the third quarter at 36-34 with 1:15 to play in the quarter.  They added another point to the lead by the end of the quarter and held a 39-36 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans took the lead again with 4:25 to play, 45-44, after a Cassidy Siemonsma layup.  West Central added seven straight points after that layup for a 52-44 lead.  The Cavaliers got it down to two points at 52-50 with 1:30 to play, but the Trojans scored the next five points to lead 57-50 with :50 left to secure the win.

West Central shot 42% (22-53) from the field, 32% (10-31) from three-point area, and 46% (6-13) from the free-throw line.  St Thomas More finished 39% (19-49) from the field.

Siemonsma finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Addy Kramer had 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.  Rylee Haldeman had nine points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals.  Cambell Fischer added seven points, seven assists, and three rebounds.

West Central (16-2) will host Canton on Tuesday, February 16th.
