Estelline Spoils Season Opener for Cardinals

DRSM LogoThe Estelline Redmen defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team on Friday, December 12th, in Estelline by a score of 55-41.

The Cardinals had two players finish the game with double-figures.  Matt Farmer finished with 14 points.  Noah Fiegen added 10 points and six rebounds.  Christian Schnieders added 10 rebounds for St Mary.  Estelline was led by Max Hausman with 13 points.  Nolan Sonnenburg had 12 points, and Trevor Gorder had 10 points.  Ethan Kurka finished with 15 rebounds in the game.

The Cardinals start the season with an 0-1 record.  St Mary will travel to Bridgewater to take on Bridgewater-Emery on Monday, December 15th.

Boys Basketball All-Conference Selections

Four area boys basketball players were honored with All-Conference selections recently.

Dell Rapids Quarrier sophomore Ty Hoglund was named to the Dakota XII Conference First Team.  Senior Cody Nielsen was named to the Third Team, and Junior Zane Schumaker received an Honorable Mention for the 2013-2014 season.

Junior Mitch Brown from Dell Rapids St Mary was named to the Dakota Valley Conference Second Team.

Colman/Egan Advances in District 7B Tournament

The Colman/Egan Hawks defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, March 3rd, in Dell Rapids.  The Hawks erased a nine-point deficit in the final quarter to pick up a 38-34 win. St Mary scored the first four points of the game, but Colman/Egan brought the game to a 6-6 tie at the end of the first quarter.  The Cardinals were able to pull away towards the end of the second quarter, and St Mary held a 19-14 halftime lead.  The Hawks cut the lead down to four points by the end of the third quarter at 26-22.  To start the fourth quarter, St Mary scored the first five points, and opened up a nine-point lead with 6:35 left in the game.  Colman/Egan went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:20 to pull within 31-30 with 4:15 to go.  Colman/Egan continued the run and scored the next four points to take a 33-31 lead with 2:21 remaining in the game.  St Mary was able to pull within a point at 35-34 with :42 left, but that was as close as they would get.  The Hawks hit two free throws with :04.5 left to earn the victory.

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals have their season come to an end with a 5-16 record.  Colman/Egan will travel to Elkton to take on the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks in the second round of the District 7B Tournament on Tuesday, March 4th.

Baltic Picks up Win on Big 4th Quarter

The Baltic Bulldogs defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in boys basketball action on Friday, February 21st, in Baltic.  The Bulldogs earned a 58-36 win over the Cardinals.  Dell Rapids St Mary held a four-point lead after the first quarter at 11-7.  Neither team scored in the first couple of minutes in the second quarter, but by the half-way mark, the Cardinals were hanging on to a 13-11 lead.  Baltic finished the second quarter on a 13-5 run and held a 24-18 halftime lead.  The Bulldogs pushed their halftime lead to 10 by the 4:00 mark of the 3rd quarter, but St Mary ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to pull within five at 30-35.  The fourth quarter proved to be difficult for the Cardinals as they didn’t score their first field goal until 2:00 left in the game.  By that time the Bulldogs reeled off 18 points to give them the win.

St Mary was led by Mitch Brown with nine points.  Jared Scholten finished with eight points.  Ryan Welbig added six points, and Nathan Klein had five points.  The Bulldogs were led by David Boer with a game-high 22 points.  Joe Muston had 15 points.  Baltic finished the game 17-22 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals fall to 5-14 on the year.  St Mary will host the Chester Flyers in their final regular season game on Monday, February 24th.

St Mary Cardinals Win Thriller over Raiders

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won a thriller of a boys basketball game over the Oldham-Ramona-Rutland Raiders on Thursday, February 13th.  The Cardinals held on for 63-61 win.  After trailing 7-11, St Mary finished the first quarter on a 10-point run and took a 17-11 lead after the first quarter.  The Cardinals were able to build on that lead, and went into the locker room ahead 30-20 at halftime.  The Raiders were able to end the third quarter on a little bit of a run and cut the lead down to 43-36 after the third quarter.  Oldham-Ramona-Rutland scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to pull within four points.  But the Cardinals were able to get the lead back to double-digits at 56-45 with 4:06 left in the game.  St Mary held a 58-51 lead with 2:00 left, but the Raiders tied the game at 58-58 with :45 after a three-point shot by Nick Skyberg.

The final :30 were a wild ride as Jared Scholten scored a layup to give the Cardinals a two-point lead with :26 left in the game.  Skyberg answered back with another three-point shot to give the Raiders a 61-60 lead :12 to go.  Ben Bunkers took the inbound pass and drove the entire length of the court for the go-ahead, game-winning layup with :04 left in the game.  Noah Fiegen added a free throw with :02.9 for the Cardinals as St Mary hung on for the win.

Every player that got into the game for St Mary ended up scoring in the ball game.  The Cardinals were led by Matt Farmer with 17 points.  Scholten finished the game with nine points.  Skyberg had a game-high 22 points for Oldham-Ramona-Rutland.  Josh Thurow finished with 13 points for the Raiders.

The Cardinals improve to 5-12 on the year.  St Mary will play host to Estelline on Monday February 17th.

Cardinal Teams Have Great Showing at DVC Tournament

DRSM LogoBoth the Dell Rapids St Mary boys and girls teams played well during the Dakota Valley Conference tournament held January 21st-25th.  The boys team finished as the consolation champions in their tournament, and the girls team finished second in their tournament.

The boys opened up the tournament with a 70-26 loss to Elkton-Lake Benton.  The Cardinals bounced back and picked up wins in their next two games.  They defeated Colman-Egan 63-57 on Thursday, January 23rd, and then beat Estelline 44-40 on Saturday, January 25th.

The girls team opened up their tournament with a win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 63-42 on Tuesday, January 21st.  The Cardinals then picked up a big win over previously undefeated and Class A #4 Deubrook 54-46.  Estelline ended the tournament for Dell Rapids St Mary by beating the Cardinals 34-47.

Garretson Picks up Win over St Mary

DRSM LogoThe Garretson Blue Dragons defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 73-45 on Saturday, January 4th, in Garretson.  The Blue Dragons jumped out to a 22-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Garretson extended the lead to 36-18 by halftime.  The Blue Dragons then scored 20 points in the third quarter to take a 56-29 lead after the quarter on their way to the win.

Dell Rapids St Mary falls to 1-5 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Lake Preston on Tuesday, January 7th.

St Mary Picks Up First Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated the Oldham-Ramona-Rutland Raiders 65-45 at the Boys Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 28th.  St Mary jumped out to a quick 17-4 lead after the first quarter, but the Raiders closed the gap to  28-19 by halftime.  Both teams put up quite a few points in the third quarter as the Cardinals extended their lead to 50-35 at the end of the quarter.

The Cardinals went 24-59 (41%) from the field in the game.  They were 5-8 (63%) from three-point range, and went 12-14 (86%) from the free-throw line.  St Mary pulled down a total of 40 rebounds as a team, had 12 steals, and turned the ball over 15 times. The Raiders went 13-45 (29%) from the field, 3-11 (27%) from three-point range, and 16-27 (59%) from the free-throw line in the game.  The Raiders had a total of 35 rebounds, five steals, and 20 turnovers.

The Cardinals were led by MVP Ben Bunkers with 17 points, two rebounds, two steals, and an assist.  Jared Scholten finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Matt Farmer also had 14 points to go along with a rebound and a steal in the game.

The Cardinals improve to 1-3 on the year and 1-1 on the Dakota Valley Conference.  St Mary will travel to Garretson to take on the Blue Dragons on Saturday, January 4th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

St Mary Boys Basketball Loses Opener in DeSmet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost its first game of the year 50-32 to the DeSmet Bulldogs on Friday, December 13th.  The game was close for the first two and a half quarters before the Bulldogs made a late second half run.  DeSmet led St Mary 15-12 after the first quarter and led 27-21 at halftime.  The Cardinals opened up the third quarter with six straight points to tie the game at 27-27.  The game was also tied at 29-29 midway through the third quarter before DeSmet ended the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 42-29 lead.  The Bulldogs outscored St Mary 8-3 in the final quarter for the win.

Jared Scholten led the Cardinals with 10 points in the game.  Ethan Schmidt added nine points, while Mitch Roeman had six.  Ben Bunkers finished with four points, and Christian Schneiders had three points.

The Cardinals will play Monday, December 16th at home against Bridgewater-Emery.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Ends St Mary Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost in the opening round of the District 4B boys basketball tournament to the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders 81-46 on Monday, February 25th, in Ramona.  The Raiders led the game start to finish.  The Raiders held an 11-9 lead just three minutes into the game and extended their lead to 26-14 after the first quarter.  The Cardinals chipped away at the lead, getting it down to nine points at 35-26 with just 2:30 left in the half, but the Raiders used a 10-1 run to close out the half.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland continued the dominance in the second half, outscoring Dell Rapids St Mary 36-19 in the final two quarters for the win.

Dell Rapids St Mary was led by Mitch Roemen with 12 points, Ethan Schmidt with 10 points, and Jared Scholten with eight points.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland had four players in double figures, led by Ryan Schlisner with a game-high 16 points, Mike Minor with 12 points, Luke Menor with 11 points, and Mitchell Malcomb with 10 points.

Dell Rapids St Mary ends the season with 2-19 record.
