Quarrier Boys Fall in Overtime in Conference Clash

The Dell Rapids Quarriers and Worthington, MN Trojans played the longest game of the day at the Dak12/NEC Conference Clash in Madison on Saturday, February 1st.  The game lasted nearly three hours because of a power outage early in the game that lasted over an hour.

The Trojans started the game on a 3-0 run only to have Dell Rapids respond with a 7-2 run for a 7-5 lead with 5:30 to go in the quarter.  The Trojans then went on a 7-2 run of their own for a 14-9 lead.  With 3:29 on the clock, Carter Nelson stepped to the line for two free throws.  He made the first one to make the score 14-10.  Moments later the power went out at the gym. 

The northeast part of Madison lost power.  Not knowing how long the outage would last, the two teams engaged is more pre-game warmup drills to stay loose as enough light entered the gym for that.  Twenty to twenty-five minutes into the outage, the two teams got together to engaged in a an epic battle of “Lightning”.  The boys decided that the three-point shot was too easy of a starting point and moved it back to half court.  The battle lasted for nearly thirty minutes and was won by a Worthington player.  After one hour and three minutes, the power returned, and the game was able to resume.

From the time the game resumed until the end, the game was tight.  The Trojans ended the first quarter leading 17-13 nearly an hour and a half after it started.  The Trojans grew their lead to a game-high eight points at 21-13 with 6:10 to play in the first half.  The Quarriers battled back and took the lead at 29-27 after a three-point basket made by Ramsey Heinecke.  Dell Rapids held a 31-29 lead at halftime.

The second half was back-and-forth all half long.  Neither team was able to get out to much of a lead.  Every time one of the teams got a lead, the other responded.  The third quarter ended with the score tied 46-46.  Neither team led by more than two points in the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids took a 61-60 lead after two made free throws by Colin Rentz with 1:51 to go in regulation.   The Quarriers missed three free throws leading by a point, and then the Trojans tied the game at 61-61 with just over a minute to play.  Regulation ended with the game tied 61-61.

The Trojans took the early advantage in overtime by scoring the first three points for a 64-61 lead with 2:45 to play.  Dell Rapids tied the game at 66-66 with 1:42 to play on a free throw made by Colin Rentz.  The Trojans took a 68-66 lead with :25 to play.  The Quarrier pulled within a point on a free throw made by Drew Van Regenmorter with :11 to go. After two made free throws by the Trojans with :08.4 to extend the lead to 70-67, the last second shot by the Quarriers was no good, and the Trojans took the three-point win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting just 28% (23-81) from the field, 19% (5-26) from three-point area, and 44% (16-36) from the free-throw line.  They had 38 team rebounds, 13 assists, and only turned the ball over six times.

Rentz had a game-high 25 points along with seven assists and six rebounds.  Logan Ellingson had 15 points.  Van Regenmorter added 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.

Cardinal Boys Notch Another Win in Lake Preston

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys earned another victory on the season with a 52-30 road win over the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 31st.

The Divers started scored the first four points of the game, but the lead would be short lived.  St Mary ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run for a 10-4 quarter break lead.  The run continued into the second quarter as the Cardinals scored the first four points before the Divers ended the run at 14-0.  St Mary continued to pull away in the second quarter and ended the half leading 25-9.  The defense of the Cardinals limited Lake Preston to only seven third quarter points as the lead grew to 40-16 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinal lead grew to thirty points early in the fourth quarter as St Mary cruised to the victory.

St Mary only shot 30% (17-56) from the field, 11% (2-18) from three-point area, and 67% (16-24) from the free-throw line, but the team pulled down a total of 39 rebounds and had 11 steals.

Ten different players for the Cardinals got into the scorebook.  Connor Libis had 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Connar Kangas had nine points.  Max Herber finished with eight points and seven rebounds.  Weston Geraets, Colin Winberg, John Pica, and Ryan Eining all had four points each.  Sam Palmer, Thomas Eining, and Eli Longville also scored.

The Cardinals (10-2) will host the Garretson Blue Dragons on Monday, February 3rd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Rebound at Lake Preston

Twenty-four hours after a tough shooting night, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls rebounded nicely with a 69-45 win on the road against the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 31st.  St Mary led from start to finish in the game.

The Cardinals used a huge first quarter to propel them to the victory.  St Mary led by 17 points at the end of the first quarter at 23-6.  The lead grew to 22 points at 40-18 by halftime as the Cardinals continued to dominate the game.  The Cardinals were able to cruise through the second half as they held a comfortable lead throughout the final two quarters.  They ended the second half with a 29-27 scoring margin.

The shots fell through the hoop at a much higher rate against the Divers than they did the previous night.  St Mary finished the game shooting 41% (27-66) from the field, 32% (6-19) from three-point area, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 37 team rebounds and 14 steals in the game.

Nine different players scored in the game for the Cardinals.  Ella Heinitz finished with 16 points, three steals and two rebounds.  Ella Griffin had 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Brianna Griffin, Maya Heinitz, and Courtney Brown all had eight points.  Sydney Klein had seven points, five rebounds and four steals, and Karlie Klein finished with six points and three rebounds.  Delaney Longville had six rebounds in the game.

The Cardinals even their season record at 8-8 on the season.  St Mary will travel to Centerville on Friday, February 7th.

Early Run Leads to Quarrier Victory

A 9-0 run to start the game sparked a big first quarter run that led to a Quarrier victory over the Vermillion Tanagers.  Dell Rapids earned a Dak-12 Conference win at home over the Tanagers 64-52 on Thursday, January 30th.

The 9-0 run over the first three and a half minutes of the game was part of a big lead the Quarriers built in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids led 19-7 with just over a minute to play and finished the first quarter leading 22-11.  The Quarriers led by double digits most of the second quarter and by as many as 14 points.  Vermillion cut the lead down to ten points at 33-23 at halftime.

The Tanagers went on a little run in the third quarter and cut the Dell Rapids lead to 36-31 with 5:00 to go in the quarter.  The Quarriers responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to 11 points at 42-31 with 3:15 to go.  Vermillion ended the quarter on a 6-2 run, and Dell Rapids led 44-37 heading into the fourth.  Dell Rapids started the fourth quarter on a 8-2 run in the first four minutes to lead 52-39 with 4:00 to go in the game.  That run put the game out of reach for Vermillion as they were unable to get any closer than 10 points the rest of the game.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 50% (27-54) from the field, 42% (8-19) from three-point area, but just 25% (2-8) from the free-throw line.  They also had a total of 32 team rebounds, 15 team assists, and only seven turnovers.

Three players finished the game in double figures again for the Quarriers.  Drew Van Regenmorter had 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.  Connor Rentz also had 16 points along with four rebounds.  Logan Ellingson added 14 points, four assists, and three rebounds. 

Dell Rapids (7-2) will play Worthington, MN in the Dak-12/NEC Clash in Madison at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 1st.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Hoops Unkind to Cardinal Girls Against Cubs

The basketball hoops seemed to be unkind to the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Thursday, January 30th.  The Cardinals fell to the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 52-41 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals shot just 22% total from the field and 9% from three-point area in the game.

St Mary did start off well as they got out to an 8-1 run to open the game.  The Cubs answered with a 12-0 to finish the quarter for a 13-8 lead.  The second quarter was back and forth, and the Cardinals were able to cut into the Cubs lead.  Alcester-Hudson led 24-22 at halftime.

The first eleven minutes of the second half was again back-and-forth between the two teams.  Neither team had a lead larger than three points in the third quarter.  St Mary ended the quarter leading by one at 35-34.  The two teams were tied 37-37 and then again at 39-39 with 4:45 to play in the game.  The Cubs then went on a 7-0 run to lead 46-39 with 2:13 left.  With the Cubs leading 47-40 with 1:15 on the clock, Alcester-Hudson made enough free throws to hold onto the lead for the win.

St Mary was 12-54 from the field, 2-22 from three-point area, but 68% (15-22) from the free-throw line.  Ella Heinitz led the team with 17 points in the game.  Ella Griffin also finished in double figures with 10 points.  Courtney Brown had six points.

The Cardinals (7-8) are back in action on Friday, January 31st.  They will travel to Lake Preston for a double-header with the boys, and both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Tanagers Win Conference Game over Quarrier Girls

The Dell Rapids Quarriers hosted the Vermillion Tanagers in a Dak-12 Conference game on Thursday, January 30th.  The Tanagers earned the 51-29 win over the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids took an early 5-3 lead after a three-point shot by Alli De Stigter with 6:00 to play in the first quarter.  Vermillion went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes for a 9-5 lead.  Dell Rapids cut the lead down to three points at 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.  Vermillion put together a strong offensive and defensive second quarter.  The Tanagers outscored the Quarriers 17-4 to take a 28-12 halftime lead.  Vermillion continued their strong run in the second half.  The Tanagers had a 23-17 advantage in the second half for the win. 

Maggie Schmidt led the Quarriers with six points.  Haileigh Barnhart added five points.  Kennedy Krull finished with four points, and De Stigter had three points.  Lexi Plitzuweit led Vermillion with 16 points, and Shandie Ludwig had 10 points.

Dell Rapids (0-11) will travel to Baltic to play the Bulldogs on Monday, February 3rd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Fourth Quarter Run Secures Cardinal Win

With their lead having been cut to two points, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals went on a fourth quarter run led by Courtney Brown, who scored 15 of the team’s 18 fourth quarter-points, to defeat the Baltic Bulldogs 52-40 on Monday, January 27th.

Most of the first quarter was close and back-and-fourth with two ties and three lead changes.  St Mary held a slim 10-9 lead with 1:30 to play in the quarter.  They then went on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter leading 18-9.  Baltic scored the first five points of the second quarter to pull within four points at 18-14 with 5:00 to go in the half.  The Cardinals responded by holding the Bulldogs to just four points the rest of the quarter to increase their lead to 28-18 at halftime.

The St Mary lead grew to 13 points at 31-18 with 5:45 to go in the third quarter.  Baltic cut the lead into single digits throughout the quarter as both defenses played tough in the third quarter.  The Cardinals maintained a 34-26 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Baltic offense got going early in the fourth quarter, and after a made three-point shot by Kylie Schneider with 5:00 to go in the game, the Bulldogs were within two points at 36-34.  That’s when Brown took control.  Brown made 13 of her 15 points of the quarter in the final 5:00 minutes of the game to spark the Cardinals fourth-quarter run for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Brown finished with a game-high 16 points.  Ella Heinitz had 13 points.  Ella Griffin finished with 10 points, and Karlie Klein had five points.  Baltic was led by Sami Polzin with nine points, Schneider with eight points, and Cami Artz with six points.

Seven Place, Team Finishes 3rd for Quarrier Wrestling at Dak12 Tourney

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team had a good conference tournament on Saturday, January 25th.  Seven different wrestlers placed and the team finished third at the Dak-12 Conference meet held at Tea Area High School.

The Quarrier team finished with a total of 135.5 points.  Canton took the team title with 197.0 points.  Madison was second with 139.5 points.

Jacob Vogel was the conference champion in the 126-pound weight class.  Mason Stubbe and Zach McKee had runner-up finishes in their weight classes.  Andrew Weiland, Trevon Cross, and Gage Carr all had third place finishes.  Brayden Gee placed fourth in the 160-pound weight class.

Dell Rapids will wrestle Tri-Valley and West Central at Tri-Valley High School on Tuesday, January 28th.

Strong First and Fourth Quarters Lead to Quarrier Victory

The Dell Rapids Quarriers used a big first and fourth quarter for a 75-48 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 25th.

After a three-point basket pulled the Huskies within a point at 5-4 with 6:40 to play in the opening quarter, Dell Rapids went on a 13-0 run to lead 18-4 with under a minute to play.  Elk Point-Jefferson got the final points of the quarter and trailed 18-7 heading into the second quarter of play.  The Huskies were able to cut the lead to eight points multiple times in the second quarter, but the Quarriers held a 35-25 halftime lead.

The Huskies were able to get the lead into single digits early in the third quarter, but Dell Rapids pushed the lead to sixteen points at 47-31 with 4:30 to play in the quarter.  The Quarriers led 49-35 heading into the final quarter.  That’s when the Dell Rapids offense exploded.  The Quarriers 26 fourth-quarter points while holding the Huskies to just 13 on their way to the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 36% (24-66) from the field, 21% (4-19) from three-point area, and 66% (23-35) from three the free-throw line.  They had 35 team rebounds, 13 assists, 13 steals, and only turned the ball over eight times in the game.

Ten players for the Quarriers scored in the game, including three in double figures.  Drew Van Regenmorter had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.  Colin Rentz had 17 points, four assists, and three rebounds.  Ramsey Heinecke finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

Dell Rapids (9-2) will host the Vermillion Tanagers in a girls and boys double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Crowned DVC Tourney Champs

Playing in their first Dakota Valley Conference tournament championship game since 2006, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team came home as tournament champs with a 66-57 win over the Arlington Cardinals on Saturday, January 25th.

St Mary and Arlington are not only two of the top teams in the DVC, but are also considered two of the teams that could make a deep post-season run.  The game had a post-season atmosphere as fans packed the Colman-Egan High School gymnasium.

The two teams didn’t take long to attack the rim the first quarter.  Both teams got a field goal attempt in the first 15 seconds of the game.  Arlington used the fast pace to get out to an 11-4 lead at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter.  Arlington maintained the lead the rest of the quarter and led 17-11 at the break.  St Mary scored the first seven points of the second quarter while holding Arlington scoreless for an 18-17 lead with 4:15 to play in the half.  The defenses continued to play strong, and Arlington took a slim, one-point advantage into the locker room at 24-23.

The start of the third quarter belonged to Sam Palmer and St Mary.  Palmer knocked down three three-point shots in the first two minutes, and St Mary led 34-24 with 6:00 to go in the third quarter.  Palmer finished the third quarter with four made three-pointers and 15 of the team’s 22 points as St Mary led 45-36 heading into the fourth quarter.  The second-half momentum for St Mary continued into the fourth quarter as the team played unselfishly on the offensive end finding the open man for numerous easy baskets.  The defense played strong making key stops to keep keep Arlington from getting any closer than three points in the final quarter to secure the win.

Palmer finished the game with a team-high 23 points.  Connor Libis added 16 points.

St May (9-2) will travel to Lake Preston to take on the Divers on Friday, January 31st in a girls and boys double-header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
