Third Quarter Boost Gives Cardinal Girls Win over Redhawks

A third quarter run helped the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to a 55-39 win over the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks in Hendricks, MN on Thursday, January 6th.

The Cardinals got out to a quick 16-10 lead after the first quarter of play.  St Mary pushed the lead to 27-14 with 4:15 to play in the second quarter, but the Redhawks scored the final seven points of the half to cut the lead to 27-21 at halftime.

Estelline/Hendricks also got the first basket of the third quarter to make the score 27-23, but that was as close as they would get.  St Mary went on a 12-0 run for a 39-23 lead with 1:40 to play in the third quarter.  The quarter ended with the Cardinals leading 41-28.  St Mary continued to build on their lead and had it up to 19 points, 47-28, with 5:20 to go in the game.  The Redhawks got it back down to 12 points, 47-35, but St Mary ended the game on an 8-4 run.

St Mary shot 51% (24-47) in the game, 21% (4-19) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals also had 26 team rebounds, 16 assists, and 12 steals.

Addyson Gilbert finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Madala Hanson had 11 points and three rebounds.  Courtney Brown added nine points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Sydney Klein also had nine points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.  Ella Griffin had seven points, six assists, and three rebounds.  Whitney Warwick finished with six points and two assists.

St Mary (4-3) will host Elkton-Lake Benton on Tuesday, January 11th.

Free Throws Key to Quarrier Win in Canton

The game came down to the free throw line in Canton Thursday, January 6th between the Dell Rapids Quarriers and Canton C-Hawks.  Dell Rapids made 13 of their 19 attempts, while Canton was just 4-15 in the game.  The Quarriers also made enough free-throws in the closing minute of the game for a 69-66 win.

The Quarriers were able to build a lead in the first half.  They ended the first quarter leading 22-16 and grew that lead to 39-30 by halftime.  Dell Rapids, however, went cold in the third quarter.  Canton took advantage and tied the game 44-44 with 3:25 left in the quarter.  They then took the lead moments later.  The C-Hawks still lead 50-48 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Quarriers were able to put the third quarter behind them and scored 21 points in the final quarter to come away with the win.

Four players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Brayden Pankonen had 19 points, six steals, four rebounds, and three assists.  Landon Ruesink had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Jack Henry added 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.  Shane Stone also had 14 points along with four rebounds and two steals.  Aiden Boechler had a team-high eight rebounds.

Dell Rapids (4-2) will host Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, January 11th.

Dell Rapids Girls Shut Down by Tough Canton Defense

The constant pressure defense by the Canton C-Hawks made things difficult for the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, January 6th.  Canton forced 32 turnovers, 17 of those on steals, on their way to a 69-46 win over the Quarriers.

The pressure defense got to the Quarriers early in the ball game.  Canton built an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, and that lead grew to 23 points by halftime, 46-23.  The quick steals and fast breaks led to more of the same in the third quarter as the C-Hawks extended the lead to 63-36.

Dell Rapids did shoot 41% (16-39) in the game, 37% (7-19) on three pointers, but just 39% (7-18) from the free-throw line.  Canton finished  the game shooting 44% (22-50), 55% (6-11) on three pointers, and 73% (19-26) from the free-throw line.

Liz Prize had nine points, two rebounds, and two assists.  Mady VanOverebeke also had nine points and a steal.  Claire Wynja finished with seven points, two rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Alli De Stigter had six points, and Zoey Hilmoe had four points and seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (1-8) will host Lennox on Monday, January 10th.

JV Results

The below zero temperatures outside Canton High School seemed to have followed the Quarrier JV shooters into the gym as they fell to the C-Hawks JV team 24-46.  Struggles shooting from the floorr along with too many turnovers resulted in the young Quarriers loss after having won three games in a row.

Shelby Welbig finished with eight points and four rebounds.  Elly Olson had seven points, two steals, and two assists.  Jenna Miller also had seven points, two steals, and two assists.  Clara Justice had six rebounds and a point, and Tori Malsam also had a point.

St Mary Boys Survive Rough Night

The game wasn’t pretty, but the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys survived a rough night for a 33-25 win over the Garretson Blue Dragons on Tuesday, January 4th.  Both teams shot just 22% and each committed 19 turnovers.

The Blue Dragons had the slim advantage in the first half.  They had a two-point lead, 9-7, after the first quarter.  The lead was cut to just a single point, 14-13, at halftime.  St Mary used an 11-3 scoring advantage in the third quarter to have a 24-17 lead heading into the fourth.  The Cardinals were able to hold the lead for the 33-25 win.

St Mary was 11-51 shooting in the game, 16% (3-19) from three-point area, and 57% (8-14) from the free-throw line.  Garretson finished 10-46 from the field, went 1-22 on three-pointers, and was 4-10 from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a 39-33 advantage on rebounds as well.

Dylan Mathis had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds along with seven steals.  Ty Brown had six points, two rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Nic Gaspar finished with four points, seven rebounds, and two assists.  Gabe Lindeman also had four points and two steals.  John Pica added three points and eight rebounds.  Noah Reiff had three points and five rebounds.  CJ Smith finished with six rebounds and three steals.

The Cardinals (4-2) will travel to Estelline to face the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Friday, January 7th.

Garretson Pulls Away from Cardinal Girls

A 10-point scoring advantage for the Garretson Blue Dragons was the difference in the game on Tuesday, January 4th.  The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Blue Dragons by 10 points, 57-47.

The two teams played an even first quarter.  The score was tied 10-10 at the first break.  Garretson was able to hold a four-point advantage, 22-18, at halftime.  The Blue Dragons then put together the big third quarter.  They outscored St Mary 19-9 for a 41-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals made up four points in the fourth quarter making the difference in the game the 10-point, third quarter advantage.

The Cardinals shot 30% (17-57) in the game, 28% (5-18) on three-pointers, and 53% (8-15) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 31 team rebounds, 12 team assists, but turned the ball over 19 times.

Madala Hanson had a team-high 15 points with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.  Ella Griffin finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Sydney Klein added seven points and eight rebounds.  Addy Gilbert had five points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Sierra Klein ended the game with four points.

St Mary (3-3) will play Estelline/Hendricks in Hendricks, MN on Thursday, January 6th.

Dell Rapids Girls Get First Win of Season

The Dell Rapids Quarrier defense forced 19 Fighting Cougar turnovers on 13 steals helping the Quarriers to their first win of the season.  Dell Rapids defeated McCook Central/Montrose 45-41 at home on Tuesday, January 4th.

The Cougars made the first three-pointer of the game, but that was their only lead.  The Quarriers responded with a 7-0 and continued to hold the lead, 12-9, at the end of the first quarter.  Mady VanOverbeke made a three-pointer with 4:10 to play in the second quarter to give Dell Rapids their largest lead of the game.  They led 24-12 at that point.  McCook Central/Montrose finished the half on an 8-2 run, but Dell Rapids still led 26-20 at halftime.

The Quarriers were able to maintain their lead throughout the third quarter.  Dell Rapids led by seven, 36-29, going into the fourth quarter.  Another three-pointer, this time by Maggie Schmidt, pushed the Quarrier lead to double digits at 41-31 with 4:00 to go.  The Cougars cut the lead down to four points, 43-39, with :15 to go, but Zoey Hilmoe made two free throws just seconds later to seal the victory.

Dell Rapids shot 38% (17-45) from the field, 18% (3-17) on three-pointers, and 8-10 on free-throws.  The Quarriers had 16 rebounds as a team, 13 steals, and nine assists.

Jayme Schmidt finished with eight points and four rebounds.  Hilmoe also had eight points with three rebounds, two blocks, a steal, and an assist.  M. Schmidt had eight points as well.  Claire Wynja finished with seven points and two steals.  Haileigh Barnhard added six points, seven rebounds, three steals, three blocks, and three assists.

Dell Rapids (1-7) will travel Canton on Thursday, January 6th.

JV Results

The Quarrier JV team made it three wins in a row with their 40-32 win over McCook Central/Montrose.  The record for the JV team is now 4-3.  Jenna Miller had 22 points, three steals and two assists.  Ellly Olson finished with seven points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Shelby Welbig had six points, four rebounds, and three steals.  Kerrigan Kindopp had three points, two steals, two assists, and two rebounds.  Tori Malsam added two points.

Quarrier Wrestling Drops Two in Canton

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team dropped both of its duals at a Dak-12 triangular in Canton on Tuesday, January 4th.  The Vermillion Tanagers defeated Dell Rapids 39-24, and then the Canton C-Hawks got the win 65-13.

Mason Stubbe and Quinn Carr both had two wins on the night.  John Mortrude, Kane Murphy, Gabe Clark, and Aiden Geraets each earned a win.

Dell Rapids will be in Brandon for teh Dan Pansch/Lynx Invite on Saturday, January 8th.

Late Rally Not Enough for Quarrier Boys

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team finished the game on a 14-0 run, but ran out of time as they fell to the West Central Trojans 60-51 on the road on Monday, January 3rd.

The Quarriers did have an early lead to start the game.  Dell Rapids led 7-4 with 4:30 to play in the quarter, but by the end of the quarter West Central had a 14-9 advantage.  The lead grew by two points more by halftime.  The Trojans led 30-23 at the break.

Dell Rapids was on the wrong end of a 10-0 run to start the third quarter.  West Central pushed the lead to 40-23 with 5:45 in the quarter.  The Trojans led 54-35 heading into the fourth quarter.  The lead grew to 23 points at 60-37 with 5:45 left in the game.  Dell Rapids then had their 14-0 run, but the comeback effort ran out of time.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 42% (22-52) from the field, just 1-7 on three-pointers, and 46% (6-13) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids out-rebounded the Trojans 33-26, but turned the ball over 17 times in the game.

Three players finished in double figures.  Landon Ruesink had 18 points and three assists.  Shane Stone ended with 12 points and five rebounds.  Jack Henry had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds along with three steals and three assists.

Dell Rapids (3-2) will travel to Canton on Thursday, January 6th.

Quarrier Boys Get Entringer Classic Win over Hamlin

Every time the Hamlin Chargers made a run at the lead, the Dell Rapids Quarriers had an answer.  Dell Rapids won the close battle 58-51 at the Entringer Classic at Brookings High School on Friday, December 31st.

Dell Rapids started the game on a 7-0 run and led 10-2 in the first quarter.  The Chargers closed the quarter on a 7-0 run of their own to make the score 10-9 at the break.  After Hamlin tied the game 15-15, Dell Rapids went on another 7-0 run to lead 22-15 and ended the first half with a 26-22 advantage.

The Quarriers would build a lead of five-to-seven points throughout the second half, but Hamlin would find a way to get the game within a single possession.  Dell Rapids held a five-point lead, 44-39, goings into the fourth quarter.  The Chargers fought back to pull within a point, 52-51, with 1:57 to go in the game, but Dell Rapids sank four free throws and a layup in that time for the 58-51 win.

Dell Rapids shot 50% (21-42) from the field, 36% (4-11) on three-pointers, and a perfect 12-12 on free throws.  Hamlin was 44% (18-41) shooting, 53% (10-19) on three-pointers, and 63% (5-8) on free throws.

Brayden Pankonen, named the game’s MVP, had 19 points, five rebounds, and an assist.  Landon Ruesink had 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists.  Shane Stone finished with eight points and four rebounds.  Jack Henry finished with seven points, two rebounds, and an assist.  Camden Justice added six points, five rebounds, and  two assists.  Aiden Boechler also had six points and three rebounds.

Dell Rapids (3-1) will travel to West Central on Monday, January 3rd.

Late Surge Lifts Deuel over Cardinal Boys

A late fourth-quarter run by the Deuel Cardinals gave them a victory over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals at the boys Entringer Classic in Brookings on Friday, December 31st.  Deuel took the win 68-56.

The two teams went back and forth the first quarter.  The two teams ended the quarter tied 16-16.  The second quarter played just like the first with the two teams trading leads.  St Mary held a two-point 29-27 lead at halftime.

St Mary held a 39-33 lead with about a minute to play in the third quarter, but Deuel ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 40-39 lead into the fourth quarter.  The two teams traded baskets again early in the fourth quarter.  St Mary took a 50-48 lead with 5:00 to play on a three-pointer by Dylan Mathis.  Deuel then went on a 9-0 run for a 57-50 lead with 3:00 to go.  They continued the big run outscoring St Mary 11-6 the rest of the game.

St Mary finished the game shooting 44% (19-43), 31% (4-13) from three-point area, and 54% (14-26) from the free-throw line.  Deuel out-rebounded St Mary 31-29 and forced 17 St Mary turnovers.

John Pica led St Mary with 17 points and eight rebounds.  CJ Smith had nine points and two assists.  Mathis also had nine points with one rebound and one assist.  Ty Brown added nine points and two rebounds.  Nic Gaspar had eight points, five rebounds, and two assists.

St Mary (3-2) will host Garretson on Tuesday, January 4th.
