The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls rallied from a 19-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback against the Deubrook Dolphins in Friday, January 21st.  Deubrook turned a missed shot into a layup late in the game to extend their lead and made free throws in the closing seconds for a 55-46 win.

The Dolphins scored the first four points of the game, and the Cardinals played catch-up the entire game.  Ella Griffin made her second three pointer of the game with 3:57 in the opening quarter to bring the Cardinals within a point, 7-6.  Deubrook then went on a 7-0 run.  The Dolphins led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.  St Mary cut the lead to 19-17 after Griffin’s third three pointer in the half with 6:35 to go in the second quarter.  Deubrook again responded and pushed the lead to 31-23 by halftime.

The defenses ruled the first half of the third quarter.  Neither team scored for four minutes.  Deubrook finally got a basket with 3:45 to play in the third quarter.  That basket sparked a rally by the Dolphins, and they led 44-29 heading into the fourth quarter.  Deubrook scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 48-29 with 6:45 in the game.

St Mary then went on a big rally outscoring Deubrook 16-2 to cut the lead to 50-45 with 1:02 to play.  The Cardinals stole an inbound pass and had a chance to cut the lead to one possession, but their shot with :51 was no good.  Deubrook got the rebound and made a layup with :40 to push the lead to 52-45.  The Dolphins made three free throws from there for the win.

The Cardinals shot 37% (16-43) in the game, 36% (9-25) from three-point area, and 5-9 from the free-throw line.  Deubrook was 42% (21-50) from the field, 23% (3-13) on three pointers, and 71% (10-14) from the free-throw line.
