Quarrier Girls Suffer Opening Round Loss

DRvsLen_GBB_3-9-17_1The Dell Rapids Quarriers had to climb out of a double-digit first quarter deficit, only to see the Lennox Orioles pull away in the final minutes for a 63-58 win in the opening round of the 2017 Girls State A Tournament in Brookings over the Quarriers.  The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak.  Lennox was also the last team to beat Dell Rapids.

Lennox had an 8-6 lead early in the first quarter, and then went on 12-2 run for a 20-8 lead late in the first quarter.  The Quarriers were able to cut the lead to 10 points at 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.  The Dell Rapids defense then held Lennox to just 10 second quarter points, while the offense found a little groove.  Dell Rapids was able to cut the to 33-29 by halftime.  The Quarriers brought the defensive intensity into the third quarter and was able to take a three point lead with 1:44 to go in the third quarter, but the third quarter ended with the score tied at 44-44.  With 4:31 to go in the game, Emma Paul put the Quarriers ahead 52-50 on a two-point bucket, but Lennox when on an 8-0 run and led 58-52 late in the game.  Paul knocked down a three point DRvsLen_GBB_3-9-17_2shot with just under a minute to play to cut the lead to 58-55.  After three made Oriole free throws over the next :30, Ravyn Hoffman then made a three-point shot with :35 to go to make it 61-58.  Lennox closed out the game with two more free throws for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 41% (21-51) from the field, 42% (8-19) from three-point area, but just 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 35 team rebounds, 14 assists, and 13 turnovers.  Lennox finished the game shooting 39% (18-46) from the field, 42% (8-19) from three-point line, and an impressive 83% (19-23) from the free-throw line.  Lennox also had 31 team rebounds, just six assists, and eight steals.

DRvsLen_GBB_3-9-17_4Jayda Knuppe finished the game with 19 points for Dell Rapids along with seven rebounds.  Emma Paul had 17 points and four rebounds.  Kaylee Hennen had five points.  Averi Pankonen added four points.  Kali Graham, Arial Hoffman, R. Hoffman, and Sydney Stofferahn all had three points each.  Aspen Hansen had one point, bug five rebounds and three assists.

Dell Rapids (18-5) will play Hamlin at 1:45 p.m. on Friday.

Quarrier Girls Earn 3rd Straight Trip to State

2017DRGirlsSweet16ChampThe Dell Rapids Quarriers earned their third straight trip to the State A Tournament after beating the Todd County Falcons 59-49 in the Sweet 16 round in Chamberlain on Friday, March 3rd.  The win was also the 14th win in a row for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids opened the game on a 7-0 run in the first 2:30.  Todd County countered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take an 8-7 lead with about 3:30 to play in the quarter.  The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter, and the Falcons led 15-14 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids started the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 20-17 lead, and slowly pulled added to the lead until it was 30-21 at halftime.

The Falcons were able to chip away at the Quarrier lead in the third quarter and held Dell Rapids to just eight third quarter points.  Todd County and Dell Rapids headed to the fourth quarter tied at 38-38.  Dell Rapids scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, but the Falcons answered with a two-point basked with 7:00 to go to make the score 41-40.  Dell Rapids scored the next six points and pushed the lead to 47-40 with 5:45 remaining in the game.  Dell Rapids maintained a seven-to-nine point lead until the Falcons pulled within five points at 52-47 with 1:52 to go.  The Quarriers ended the game on a 7-2 run for the win.

Kali Graham, who was held scoreless in the first quarter, led Dell Rapids with 19 points.  Jayda Knuppe added 18 points.  Averi Pankonen had eight points, Emma Paul finished with seven points, Kaylee Hennen had three points, and Sydney Stofferahn had two points.  Dell Rapids finished 20-33 from the free-throw line in the game.

The Quarriers (14-4) will ride their 14-game win streak into the 2017 State A Tournament in Brookings on March 9th through 11th.  Dell Rapids will play Dak-12 foe Lennox in the opening round on Thursday at around 7:45 p.m.  Lennox was the last team to beat the Quarriers, which was a 63-60 overtime loss on January 9th in Lennox.

Season Ends for Quarrier Boys Against Chargers

DRvsSFC_BBB_3-2-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers had their season come to an end in the Region 3A semi-finals on Thursday, March 2nd, against the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers at the Elmen Center.  The Chargers defeated the Quarriers 71-54.

Both teams started the game on little runs, and the first quarter ended with the scored tied at 13-13.  Sioux Falls Christian was able to make a run late in the second quarter and pulled away from Dell Rapids at 31-21 by halftime.  The Quarriers came out of halftime with energy and cut the lead to four points early in the third quarter.  The Chargers, however, quietly and methodically pulled away from Dell Rapids and led 49-36 by the end of the third quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian was almost automatic from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and was 20-24 in the game.  The Chargers outscored Dell Rapids 22-18 in the final period for the win.

Dell Rapids was led by Jeffrey Schuch with 15 points.  Austin Ellingson added 11 points.  Tanner Heim finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.  Sheldon Siemonsma also finished in double figures with 10 points.  Dell Rapids shot 39% (20-51) from the field and 63% (10-16) from the free-throw line.  Sioux Falls Christian was led by Mitchell Goodbary with 19 points, and Dejay Fykstra with 13 points.

Sioux Falls Christian will advance to the Sweet 16 and will play Sisseton on Tuesday, March 7th.

The Madison Bulldogs also advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 70-52 win over the Flandreau Fliers in the opening game of the night.  Madison was led by Aaron Fiegen with 29 points, and Riley Janke had 14 points.  Flandreau was led by Dalyn Bakkedahl with 21 points and Dylan LeBrun with 20 points.  Madison will play Hot Springs in the Sweet 16 round also on Tuesday, March 7th.

Defense Sends Quarrier Boys to Region 3A Semi’s

DRvsBaltic_BBB_2-28-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers held the Baltic Bulldogs to single digits in three of the four quarters on their way to a 65-32 win in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, February 28th.

The Quarriers got out to an 18-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The first quarter was the only quarter Baltic would score double figures.  Dell Rapids would outscore the Bulldogs 22-8 in the second quarter for a 40-18 lead at halftime.  Baltic was only able to get eight points in the third quarter as well and trailed 59-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams were held to just six points each in the final period.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 44% (27-62) from the field, 16% (4-25) from three-point area, and 78% (7-8) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 46 rebounds in the game, 16 assists, 10 steals and only turned the ball over six times.

Four players finished in double figures led by Sheldon Siemonsma with 18 points, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.  Jeffrey Schuch had 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Mason Peter added 13 points along with eight rebounds and three assists.  Mason Schmidt finished with 11 points and six rebounds.  Logan Heim had a team high 12 rebounds in the game.

Dell Rapids (15-6) will face the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, March 2nd, at the Elmen Center.  Game time will be 8:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.  Madison will play Flandreau in the first game on Thursday starting at 6:30 p.m.   Both games will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Season Ends in Elkton

DRSMvsELB_BBB_2-27-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their 2016-2017 season come to an end in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, February 27th, in Elkton.  The Cardinals fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 46-36.

The Cardinals was able to get a first quarter lead and led 9-8 at the first break.  The Elks grabbed the lead heading into halftime at 20-19.  Elkton-Lake Benton started to pull away in the third quarter as they outscored the Cardinals 15-7 for a 35-26 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Elks then also outscored St Mary 11-10 in the final quarter for the win.

Luke Brown led the Cardinals with nine points.  Zach Geraets added seven points.  Weston Geraets had six points, Connor Libis finished with five points, and Max Herber tossed in four points.

St Mary ends its season with a record of 8-13.

Quarrier Girls Advance to Sweet 16

DRvsSFC_GBB_2-25-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers advanced to the “Sweet 16” round of the Class A post season with a 59-51 win over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in the semi-final round of the Region 3A tournament on Saturday, February 25th, in Hartford.  The win was also the 13th win in a row for Dell Rapids as they are now just one win away from their third straight state tournament appearance.

The Quarriers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game.  Sioux Falls Christian answered with a 6-0 in the next minute and a half to take a 6-5 lead with 5:00 to go in the first quarter.  The teams traded points the remainder of the quarter, and the game was tied at 12-12 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids opened up the first half of the second quarter on an 8-2 run and took a 20-14 lead with 4:00 to play in the first half.  With the score at 20-17 with 1:30 to go in the second quarter, the Quarriers finished the half on a 7-3 run to take a 27-20 lead into halftime.

The Chargers were able to make up five points of the lead in the first half of the third quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian cut the lead to 35-33 with 4:00 to play in the third quarter.  Again the two teams traded points the remainder of the third quarter, and Dell Rapids held a 42-40 lead after the third quarter.  The Quarriers went on a 9-2 run in the first couple of minutes of the fourth quarter to push their lead to 51-42 with 5:29 to play.  The Chargers were able to get within four points at 55-51 with :41 to play, but the Quarriers would hang on for the win to advance to the next round.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Arial Hoffman led the team with 19 points and five rebounds.  Aspen Hansen had 14 points.  Emma Paul finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Kali Graham had eight points and four rebounds.

Dell Rapids (17-4) will be the #8 seed in the Sweet 16 and play #9 Todd County on Friday, March 3rd.  The location has yet to be determined.  Big Sioux Media will broadcast the game.

In the other Region 3A semi-final game, the Madison Bulldogs defeated the Flandreau Fliers 63-51 to also advance to the Sweet 16 round.  Jessi Giles had 21 points and Olivia Rud had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs.  Flandreau was led by Hannah Parsley with 18 points, Kathy Parsley with 12 points, and Kylie Bertram with 11 points.

Quarrier Wrestlers at 2017 State Tournament

2017DRQuarrierWrestleStateFive Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestlers completed their 2016-2017 season at the 2017 South Dakota State A Wrestling Tournament on Friday, February 24th, at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

Brayden Gee competed in the 106-pound class.  Gee was pinned in 1:42 in his first match by William Turman of Pierre.  Gee was then pinned in 1:54 by Dylan Hage of Harrisburg.

Scott Warwick competed in the 126-pound class.  Warwick list by a technical fall (15-0) to VIctor Padilla of Aberdeen Central.  Warwick was then pinned in 2:41 in his second match by Tigh Hight of Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

Max Lamer earned one win in the 138-pound class.  Lamer was pinned in 1:33 by Nolan Hoback of Harrisburg to open up the tournament.  Lamer then earned a 6-4 overtime decision over Sutton Carpenter of Mitchell.  Lamer then has his tournament ended in a 5-0 decision by Austin Cihak of Aberdeen Central.

Ben Cavigielli earned a pin in his state tournament in the 220-pound class.  Cavigielli lost a 12-6 decision in three overtimes to Marc Williams of Spearfish in his opening match.  Cavigielli then got a pin in 2:04 over Lincoln Stahl of Watertown.  Darrien Stutz of Rapid City Stevens then defeated Cavigielli 3-2.

Nick Palmer competed in the 285-pound class.  Palmer lost to Nash Hutmacher of Chamberlain by a pin in 0:57.  Palmer then earned a pin in 3:09 of Thomas Fischer of Lennox.  Palmer’s day came to an end by Ty Paulsen of Pierre in a 3-1 overtime loss.

All five wrestlers had their tournaments come to an end on Friday.  Congratulations to all of the Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestlers!

Cardinal Girls Fall in District Opener

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their season come to an end in the opening round of the District 7B Tournament on Tuesday, February 21st.  The Cardinals lost to the Chester Area Flyers 36-53 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Chester Area opened up the game on a 4-0 run, but St Mary answered with a 5-0 run.  The Cardinals led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.  The offenses picked up the pace in the second quarter, and the Flyers went to the locker room at halftime with a slim 19-17 lead.  Chester Area was able to extend the lead in the third quarter 36-24.  The Flyers then outscored St Mary 11-5 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to pull ahead 47-29 as they earned the tournament win.

The Cardinals end their season with an overall record of 9-12.  Chester Area will advance to the semifinals of the District 7B Tournament on Thursday, February 23rd.  The Flyers will travel to Elkton to take on the #1 seed Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.

Cardinal Boys End Regular Season in Chester

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals ended their regular season at Chester against the Chester Area Flyers on Monday, February 20th.  The Flyers defeated the Cardinals 81-36.

The Flyers led from start to finish in the game.  Chester Area held an 18-4 lead after the first quarter and grew it to 36-14 by halftime.  The teams combined for 37 points in the third quarter, but Chester Area pushed their lead to 58-29 by the quarter break.

St Mary finished the game shooting 34% (14-41) from the field, 39% (5-13) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 17 team rebounds, five assists, and five steals.  Chester Area finished 59% (33-56) from the field in the game.

Connor Libis had 19 points to lead all scorers in the game.  Austin Welbig had seven points and three assists.  Max Herber tossed in five points for the Cardinals.

St Mary ends the regular season with a record of 8-12.  The Cardinals will begin post-season play in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, February 27th.

Five Quarrier Wrestlers Qualify for State

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team participated in the Region 1A tournament on Saturday, February 18th, at West Central High School.  The Quarrier team finished with 68.5 points, which was sixth place.  Watertown on the team title with 223.0 points, and Brookings finished second with 150.0 points.

Five Quarrier wrestlers qualified for state by placing in the tournament.  Brayden Gee, Scott Warwick, Max Lamer, Ben Cavigielli, and Nick Palmer all advanced to the State A tournament which will be held on February 24th and 25th at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls.  Cavigielli was also the 220-pound Region 1A Champion.
