Quarrier Boys End Regular Season with Win

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers wrapped up their 2016-2017 regular season with a win in Lennox against the Orioles on Friday, February 17th.  The Quarriers won by a score of 62-52.  This was the third win in a row for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers opened up the game with a 13-9 lead after the first quarter.  They were able to push the lead to 12 points at 33-21 by halftime.  Lennox, however, pulled within three points by the end of the third quarter at 41-38.  Dell Rapids was able to pull away in the fourth quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 44% (22-50) from the field, 8% (1-12) from three-point area, and 68% (17-25) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers finished with 35 team rebounds, 13 assists, and eight steals.

Mason Schmidt led Dell Rapids with 16 points.  Jeffrey Schuch had 15 points and eight rebounds.  Mason Peter added 11 points.  Sheldon Siemonsma and Austin Ellingson both had nine points each.  Siemonsma also had nine rebounds and four assists.  Ellingson had three assists and four steals.

Dell Rapids (16-4) will have a week off before the start of the Region 3A tournament.  The tournament will begin on Tuesday, February 28th.

Cardinal Boys Fall to Hot Shooting Baltic on Senior Night

DRSMvsBaltic_BBB_2-17-17The Baltic Bulldogs shot 63% from the field and from the three-point line in the second half on their way to a 76-50 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, February 17th.  The game was senior night for four Cardinal seniors – Austin Welbig, Garret Frost, Dalton Houska, and Zach Geraets.

The first quarter was back and forth.  St Mary started the game on a 5-0 run, but the Bulldogs answered with a 6-0 run to take a 6-5 lead.  The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter, and Baltic led 13-11 at the first break.  The Bulldogs outscored St Mary 19-8 in the second quarter and led 32-19 at halftime.  The Cardinals were able to get the lead down to nine points with 4:00 to go in the third quarter at 39-30, but the Bulldogs closed out the third quarter on a 16-5 run to lead 55-35.  Baltic then outscored the Cardinals 21-15 in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the game shooting 28% (17-61) from the field, 30% (8-27) from three-point area, and 89% (8-9) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals also had 28 total team rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis had 16 points and two assists.  Luke Brown had 11 points.  Austin Welbig had eight points and four rebounds.  Zach Geraets led the team with six rebounds.  Jon Wilhelmsen had 30 points for Baltic.  Brock Aaker had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Ethan Roggow had 10 points.

St Mary (8-11) will finish the regular season on Monday, February 20th, at Chester Area.

Quarrier Girls Make it a Sweet Dozen

DRvsMad_GBB_2-16-17Trailing 42-36 heading into the fourth quarter, the Dell Rapids Quarriers outscored the Madison Bulldogs 25-12 in the final quarter to earn a 61-54 victory.  The win was their 12th win in a row and 10th win in Dak-12 Conference play.

Dell Rapids led 13-12 after a back-and-fourth first quarter, but Madison pulled ahead in the second quarter and took a 27-23 lead into halftime.  The Bulldogs were able to maintain a six-to-eight point lead throughout much of the third quarter and led 42-36 at the end of the quarter.  The Quarriers opened the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run and never relinquished the lead after that point.  The Bulldogs were never able to get any closer than three points the remainder of the game.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 35% (21-60) from the field, 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and 75% (15-20) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 32 team rebounds, 10 team assists, and forced 17 Bulldog turnovers.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Emma Paul had a team-high 18 points along with five rebounds.  Jayda Knuppe had 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Arial Hoffman had 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Averi Pankonen finished with five points in the game.  Madison was led by Jessi Giles with 20 points and Olivia Rud with 18 points.

Dell Rapids finishes the regular season with a 16-4 overall record and a 10-1 Dak-12 Conference record.  The Quarriers will be the #1 seed in the Region 3A Tournament and will receive a first round bye.  Dell Rapids will play the winner #5 Baltic and #4 Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, February 23rd, at Tea Area High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Erase Halftime Deficit in Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals trailed by 14 points at halftime to the Hendricks, MN Grizzlies. The Cardinal defense only allowed 12 second half points to earn a 37-36 come-from-behind win on Thursday, February 16th, in Hendricks.

The Cardinals offense struggled to get going in the first half.  St Mary trailed 13-3 through the midway point of the first half and trailed 24-10 at halftime.  St Mary got things rolling in the second half as they went on a 15-5 run in the first part of the second half to close the gap at 29-25 with 9:41 remaining in the game.  St Mary took the lead at 35-33 with 1:41 to go and pushed that lead to four points with :32 to go in the game to complete the 14-point comeback win.

Jackie Wolles finished the game with 10 points in a balanced Cardinal scoring attack.  Ella Heinitz finished with eight points, and Kennedi Mullaney and Lexi Klein both had six points each.

The Cardinals finish their regular season with a 9-11 record and will be the #4 seed in the District 7B tournament.  The Cardinals will host Chester Area on Tuesday, February 21st.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Siemonsma Signs with Mt Marty

SiemonsmaSigning2017_1Dell Rapids senior Sheldon Siemonsma has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Mount Marty Lancers in Yankton.  Siemonsma signed his letter during a signing ceremony at Dell Rapids High School on Thursday, February 16th.  Joining him at the signing was Mount Marty Lancer head coach Andrew Baker.

Siemonsma has scored 522 points in his career at Dell Rapids.  He has a 38% field goal percentage, 33% three-point percentage, and 69% free-throw percentage.  Siemonsma also has a total of 201 career rebounds, 75 assists, 45 steals, and 49 blocked shots.  He currently has a total of 208 points this season while shooting 36% from the field.

Dell Rapids Quarrier head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “Sheldon has really developed into an all-around player this season.  He has always been able to fill it up from long distance, but he has become a defensive stopper for us this season as well.  He is long and athletic, and he will be able to guard multiple positions at the collegiate level.  Sheldon is always calm and cool on the court, and I look forward to watching him continue to improve as a basketball player over the next four years.”

Siemonsma will join fellow Dell Rapids graduate Zane Schumaker who is in his freshman season for the Lancer basketball program.  Fellow senior Josh Roemen recently signed with Mount Marty to play baseball.

Colman-Egan Spoils Senior Night for Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Colman-Egan Hawks played the part of spoiler for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals as the Hawks defeated the Cardinals 48-37 during Senior Night on Tuesday, February 14th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

St Mary held a 10-9 lead after a back-and-forth first quarter.  The Hawks early in the second quarter, but St Mary tied the game at 22-22 after a basket by Maddie Schwebach with 1:58 to go in the half.  Colman-Egan finished out the quarter on a 5-2 run and held a 27-24 halftime lead.  The third quarter proved to be turning point in the game as the Colman-Egan defense held St Mary to just one point and had a 37-25 lead heading into the final quarter.  St Mary was unable to get any closer than nine points the remainder of the game.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 31% (12-39) from the field, 0-9 from three-point area, and 57% (13-23) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 27 team rebounds, six assists, and 11 steals.

Jackie Wolles led all scorers in the game with 15 points.  Wolles also had three rebounds.  Lexi Klein had nine points and five rebounds.  Ella Heinitz finished with five points.  Sydney Cook pulled down seven rebounds, and Cassy Geraets grabbed five rebounds.

St Mary (8-11) will finished their regular season on the road at Hendricks, MN on Thursday, February 16th.

Quarrier Boys Get Last Second Win Against Canton

DRvsCanton_BBB_2-13-17For the second game in a row, the Dell Rapids Quarriers got a last-second, game-winning basket.  This time Mason Peter hit the go-ahead bucket with :03 to go in the game to give the Quarriers at 60-58 win over the Canton C-Hawks on Monday, February 13th, at Dell Rapids High School.

The first quarter was a series of runs for both teams.  Dell Rapids got out to an early 6-0 lead, but Canton answered with seven straight points to take the lead at 7-6.  Dell Rapids closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run and led 11-7 after the first quarter.  Both offenses got rolling in the second quarter as they combined for 40 points in the second quarter alone.  Dell Rapids was able to extend their lead to 34-24 at halftime.

The Quarriers were able to maintain a 10-12 point lead throughout much of the third quarter.  They were able to push their lead to a game-high 16 points at 49-33 with 1:00 to go in the third quarter.  Canton closed out the third quarter on a 4-0 run, and Dell Rapids led 49-37 heading into the final quarter.  The Quarriers got the first basket of the fourth quarter and led 51-37 with 7:40 remaining in the game, but that’s when Canton began their comeback.  The C-Hawks scored the next 10 points and closed the gap to 51-47 with 4:40 to go.  Jeffrey Schuch made a reverse layup with 4:30 left in the game to stop the 10-0 Canton run and push the lead back to 53-47.  Canton went on an 11-5 run over the next four minutes capped off by a Jake Peterson field goal to tie the game at 58-58 with just :30 to go.

With the shot clock turned off, the Quarriers held the ball near half court until the clock ran down to about :10 to go.  Austin Ellingson hit Peter with a pass that was nearly stolen at the top of the key.  Because of the aggressive defensive play, Peter was able to drive to the free-throw line and knock down the shot with just :03 to go.  After three time outs in a row, Canton’s inbound pass was tipped by Peter and the 3/4 court heave was no good as time expired.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Peter led the team with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals.  Sheldon Siemonsma had 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Jeffrey Schuch added 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Tanner Heim had nine points, and Austin Ellingson had seven points.

Streak Reaches Eleven for Quarrier Girls

DRvsCanton_GBB_2-13-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers continued their hot streak as they cruised to a 55-22 win over the Canton C-Hawks on Monday, February 13th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The win was the eleventh in a row for Dell Rapids and their 13th out of their last 14 games.  The Quarriers are now tied with the Lennox Orioles for the best regular season Dak-12 conference record at 9-1.  Each team has one more conference game remaining to decide the regular season conference champion.

Dell Rapids was in complete control of the game from the start as they got out to a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.  Dell Rapids went on to have a 14-4 lead after the first quarter.  The Quarriers continued their solid defense in the first half has they held Canton to just two points in the second quarter, and the Quarriers led 28-6 at halftime.  Dell Rapids then went on to outscore Canton 27-16 in the second half for the win.

Nine players recorded points in the game for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe led the team with 11 points.  Arial Hoffman finished with nine points.  Kayle Hennen and Emma Paul both had eight points.  Sydney Stofferahn ahd six points, Kali Graham had four points, and Tiffanie Dorale, Aspen Hansen, and Averi Pankonen all finished with three points each.

The Quarriers (15-4) will close out their four-game home stand as well as their 2016-2017 regular season when they host the Madison Bulldogs on Thursday, February 16th.  The game will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Solve Colman-Egan

DRSM LogoThe Colman-Egan Hawks outscored Dell Rapids St Mary by 12 points in the third quarter to fuel a 74-54 win over the Cardinals on Monday, February 13th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Colman-Egan took the lead in the first quarter and led 19-12 at the first break.  The Cardinals hung with the Hawks in the second quarter and trailed Colman-Egan 35-27 at halftime.  But Colman-Egan outscored St Mary 26-14 in the third quarter and took a 61-41 lead into the fourth quarter on their way to the victory.

St Mary shot 47% (18-38) from the field, 47% (8-17) from three-point area, and 67% (10-15) from the free-throw line in the game.  The Cardinals also had 23 total rebounds, 12 assists, but turned the ball over 20 times in the game.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis had 20 points, while Luke Brown finished with 18 points.  Weston Geraets added eight points, and Logan Gaspar had four points.  Austin Welbig led the team with seven assists in the game.  Logan Gaspar, Libis, Brown, and Geraets all had three rebounds each.

St Mary (8-10) will have their final regular season home game on Friday, February 17th.  The Cardinals will host the Baltic Bulldogs.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Rentz’s Game-Winner Lifts Quarrier Boys to Win

DRvsSTM_BBB_2-11-17With :06.5 to go in the game and the Quarriers trailing 50-51, Carson Rentz  dribbled the length of the court and took a three-point shot just to the right of the top of the key.  The ball traveled through the air as the time ticked off the clock and went through the hoop hitting nothing but net as the clock hit 0:00 to give the Dell Rapids Quarriers a 53-51 win over the St Thomas More Cavaliers on Saturday, February 11th, at the DWU Culver Classic in Mitchell.  The win ended a four game skid for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids led 15-11 after the first quarter, but the Cavaliers cut that lead in half in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids took a 25-23 lead into halftime.  St Thomas More erased that deficit by outscoring Dell Rapids 17-7 in the third quarter, and the Cavaliers led 40-32 at the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids then flipped the script and outscored the Cavaliers 21-11 in the final quarter.

Austin Ellingson and Jeffrey Schuch both finished with 10 points in the game for Dell Rapids.  Rentz ended with nine points, Mason Peter had seven points, and Tanner Heim and Sheldon Siemonsma both had six points each.  Heim led the team with nine rebounds, and Schuch finished with eight rebounds.  Ellingson also had five assists in the game, while Siemonsma had two steals.

Rentz was named the game’s MVP for his nine points and buzzer-beater, game-winning three-point shot.

Dell Rapids (12-6) will play their final home game of the regular season on Monday, February 13th, when they host the Canton C-Hawks.  The game will be part of a girls and boys double-header, and seniors will be recognized between the girls and boys game.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
