Quarrier Girls Ends Skid with Big Road Win

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team ended a small, two-game losing streak with a big Region 3A and Dak-12 Conference road win at Hartford.  The Quarriers defeated the #4 ranked West Central Trojans 56-49 on Tuesday, January 16th.  The Trojans were coming off an overtime win over #1 St Thomas More on Friday, January 12th.

Dell Rapids took control in the first half building a 29-16 halftime lead.  The Trojans were only able to cut the lead down to 10 points by the end of the third quarter at 40-30.  West Central tried made a run toward the end of the game, but the Quarriers knocked down their free throws to secure the win.

The Quarriers shot 52% from the field in the game while holding the Trojans to just 27%.  Dell Rapids was 13-20 from the free-throw line, and West Central finished 14-18.

Emma Paul led the way offensively with 14 points in the game.  Arial Hoffman had 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Ravyn Hoffman finished with eight points and seven assists.  Jayda Knuppe and Aspen Hansen also had eight points each in the game.

The Quarriers (8-3) will host Sioux Valley on Friday, January 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Wins Two on Senior Night

DRWrestle_1-16-18The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team honored their three seniors during a Dak-12 home meet on Tuesday, January 17th.  The three seniors are Nick Palmer, Ben Cavigielli, and Jack Prasek.

The Quarriers won both of their matches on the night.  Dell Rapids defeated Dakota Valley 70-6 and then defeated Elk Point-Jefferson 46-27.

Dell Rapids will be in Garretson on Thursday, January 18th for a triangular with Garretson and Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

Quarrier Defense Locks Down Garretson

The Dell Rapids Quarrier defense held Garretson to an average of nine points per quarter as Dell Rapids cruised to a 76-36 win over the Blue Dragons on Monday, January 15th at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids only gave up eight points in the first quarter and led 14-8 at the break.  The Quarriers outscored the Blue Dragons 21-12 in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids led 35-20 at halftime.  After allowing 14 points in the third quarter, the Quarriers held Garretson to just two points in the final quarter in the victory.

The offense for Dell Rapids continued to roll as the team shot 48% from the field in the game.  They finished 29% from three-point area and 84% from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 40 team rebounds, 19 team assists, and only turned the ball over six times.

Nine different players scored for Dell Rapids.  Jeffrey Schuch led the team with 19 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocked shots and three steals.  Carson Rentz added 16 points, eight assists, and three steals.  Mason Schmidt also finished in double digits with 11 points and four rebounds.  Elijah Story and Drew Van Regenmorter tallied eight points each.  Logan Heim pulled down nine rebounds, while Eddie Price had six rebounds.

The Quarriers (6-3) will host the #1 team in Class A boys basketball, the Madison Bulldogs, on Thursday, January 18th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cook Calmly Gives Cardinal Boys 3OT Win

DRSMvsLP_BBB_1-15-18With no time left on the clock at the end of the third overtime, Jason Cook stepped to the free-throw line with no around the lane and all eyes on him.  With the game tied 68-68, Cook had three chances to give the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals a win in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament.  The first one bounced around the rim and fell away no good.  Cook gathered himself and stepped back to the line.  The second free throw went through the hoop, touching nothing but the net.  Cook’s made free-throw gave the Cardinals the win.  As a formality Cook had to take one more free throw, and he made it for the two-point win.  Dell Rapids St Mary defeated the Lake Preston Divers 70-68 in three overtimes at Lake Preston on Monday, January 15th to advance the semifinals.

The Lake Preston defense frustrated the Cardinals through the first three quarters of play.  The Divers jumped to a 9-2 lead with 3:14 to go in the first quarter.  St Mary was able to end the quarter on an 8-2 run to pull within a point at 11-10 after the first quarter of play.  The Cardinals were only able to score just eight points in the second quarter, and the Divers extended their lead to 22-18 at halftime.  Both teams scored 12 points each in the third quarter, and Lake Preston continued to hold on to their four-point lead at 34-30 heading into the final quarter.

The Divers pushed the lead to 37-32 with 5:45 to play in the game, but St Mary closed the gap to one point over the next :30.  Lake Preston held a 37-36 lead with 5:15 to go.  After a timeout, the Divers outscored St Mary 7-2 over the next 2:30 of the game to extend their lead to 44-38 with 2:45 remaining.  Lake Preston looked to be in position to get the win as they lead 46-41 with 1:00 left in the game.  Weston Geraets stole an inbounds pass after a timeout and scored on a layup to make the score 46-43.  The Divers were called for a travel with :37 on the clock.  Connor Libis made a three-point shot from the top of the key with :28 to go to tie the game at 46-46.  Connar Kangas then stole the inbound pass to give the Cardinals a chance to win it in regulation.  Libis’ shot at the buzzer was no good, and the game went to overtime.

Lake Preston took an early three-point lead in the first overtime at 49-46.  The two teams traded baskets over the next couple of possessions.  St Mary took the lead with 2:12 to go at 52-51 after a made layup by Kangas.  Libis pushed the St Mary lead to 53-51 with 1:55 play.  Lake Preston tied the game with 1:20 to go at 53-53.  Even though both teams had an opportunity to take the lead late in the overtime, neither team could score, and the game went to a second overtime.  The two teams traded points over the first three minutes of the second overtime.  The game was tied 57-57 with 1:15 remaining.  Lake Preston took a 59-57 lead with 1:03 to go.  After two defensive stops, the Divers converted one-of-two free throws with :19 left to push the lead to 60-57.  On the next Cardinal possession, Libis sunk a three-point basket from the right wing with :03 remaining to tie the game at 60-60 and force a third overtime.

St Mary scored the first basket of the third overtime and was able to maintain a one-point lead over much of the period.  Geraets made a right-handed layup from the right block with 1:22 to go to give the Cardinals a 66-63 lead.  After a defensive stop, Libis went one-of-two from the free-throw line to push the lead to 67-63 with under a minute to play.  The Divers were able to get a quick layup, and then fouled Libis in the backcourt with :45 left.  Libis went one-of-two again from the line and the lead was three points.  With :25 to go, Lake Preston made a three-point shot from the right wing to tie the game at 68-68.  With the shot clock out of play, the Cardinals’ plan was to hold for the final shot.  Libis dribbled near the top of the key for about 20 seconds.  Libis passed the ball to Kangas on the left wing with :05 to go.  Kangas got penetration to the free-throw line and dished a pass to Cook who was wide open on the right wing.  Cook took the pass and launched a three-point shot at the buzzer that was off the mark, but he drew contact and a foul on the shot.  That foul sent Cook to the line where he sank two of three free throws for the win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 33% from the field.  Geraets finished with a team-high 23 points and 17 rebounds.  Libis had 21 points.  Luke Brown tallied 12 points.  Kangas finished with eight points.  Max Herber ended the night with four points and nine rebounds, and Cook finished with the game-winning two points.

St Mary (6-3) advances to the semifinal round of the DVC tournament and will face the Colman-Egan Hawks on Thursday, January 18th.  The game will be played in Lake Preston at around 7:45 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestlers Finish Sixth at Tri-Valley

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team finished sixth at the Tri-Valley tournament on Saturday, January 13th.  Dell Rapids finished with 136.0 points.  Winner finished first with 224.5 points.  Elk Point-Jefferson was second with 161.0 points, and Lennox finished third with 159.0 points.

The Quarriers had seven wrestlers that placed in the tournament.  Ben Cavigielli finished first in the 220-weight class.  Jacob Vogel, Canyon Lowman and Nick Palmer all had second place finishes.  Gage Carr placed third, Trevon Cross finished fourth, and Trystan Stahl had a sixth place finish.

Dell Rapids will host a Dak-12 meet on Tuesday, January 16th.  It will be parent’s night during the event.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Scorches Nets in Redfield

DRvsGroton_BBB_1-13-18_1The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team lit up the scoreboard against the Groton Area Tigers at the Pheasant Shootout in Redfield on Saturday, January 13th.  The Quarriers defeated the Tigers 86-57.

Mason Schmidt electrified the Quarrier crowd early in the game.  Schmidt started the game with two straight dunks to give Dell Rapids an early 4-0 lead.  Schmidt was not done as he also knocked down four three-point shots and scored 18 points in the first quarter alone.  Dell Rapids rode the hot hand of Schmidt to a 27-13 first quarter lead. The Quarriers continued their hot shooting in the second and third quarters.  The Quarriers outscored Groton 20-11 in the second quarter to take a 47-24 lead into halftime.  Dell Rapids then added 28 more points in the third quarter and led 75-40 after the third quarter as their cruised to the victory.

Dell Rapids finished shooting 41% from the field.  They shot 39% from three-point area and also shot 71% from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 48 team rebounds, 27 team assists, and only turned the ball over six times.

DRvsGroton_BBB_1-13-18_3Schmidt finished with a game-high 32 points along with eight rebounds and two assists.  Carson Rentz added 18 points on six made three-point shots.  Rentz also dished out six assists.  Jeffrey Schuch had nine points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists.  Elijah Story had eight points, and Logan Heim had seven points and 13 rebounds.  Eddie Price added six points and six rebounds.

Dell Rapids (5-3) will host Garretson on Monday, January 15th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Nighthawks Rally Against Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoThe Tripp-Delmont/Armour Nighthawks rallied in the second half to defeat the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls 54-46 at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 13th.

Dell Rapids led by six points at 19-13 after the first quarter of play.  The Quarriers extended that lead to 12 points with 3:30 to play in the first half, but the Nighthawks cut the lead to three points at 30-27 by halftime.  Tripp-Delmont/Armour continued the run into the third quarter and outscored Dell Rapids 20-14.  The Nighthawks led 47-40 heading into the final quarter.  Dell Rapids was only able to score two points in the final quarter as the Nighthawks took the victory.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 33% from the field, just 23% in the second half.  The Quarriers were 17% from three-point area and 60% from the free-throw line.  Both teams had 14 turnovers in the game.  Dell Rapids had 36 team rebounds and 14 team assists.

Jayda Knuppe led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Aspen Hansen had nine points. Kaylee Henned added seven points, while Emma Paul and Sydney Stofferahn both had six points each.  Stofferahn also had eight rebounds.  Ravyn Hoffman led the team with four assists.

Dell Rapids (7-3) will travel to Hartford to play the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, January 16th.

Second Half Surge Lifts Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoA second half surge sent the Cardinal fans home happy on Friday, January 12th.  The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals boys basketball team defeated the Lake Preston Divers 77-51 at Lake Preston High School.

After trailing by six points at 18-12 in the first quarter, the St Mary Cardinals were able to get the game tied at 30-30 at halftime.  From that point forward, the St Mary Cardinals dominated.  St Mary outscored Lake Preston 23-10 in the third quarter for a 53-40 third quarter lead.  The Cardinals then scored 24 points in the fourth quarter while holding the Divers to just 11 points as St Mary cruised to the victory.

Three players finished in double figures for the Cardinals.  Connor Libis finished the game with 23 points.  Max Herber added 20 points, and Luke Brown tallied 17 points.

St Mary (5-3) will play Lake Preston again in Lake Preston on Monday, January 15th.  The Cardinals and Divers will meet in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament at 6:00 p.m.

Cardinal Girls Drop Two Tough Games

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped two tough games on back-to-back nights Thursday, January 11th and Friday, January 12th.

The Cardinals fell to the Canistota Hawks 55-48 Thursday night in Canistota.  The Hawks led by five points at the end of the first quarter 20-15.  St Mary got the game within a point at 27-26, but Canistota finished the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 33-26 lead into halftime.  The Cardinals closed the gap by the end of the third quarter to four points at 41-37.  St Mary was within two points at 48-46 with 3:00 to play in the game, but the shots wouldn’t fall for the Cardinals the remainder of the game.  St Mary was only able to score two more points, and Canistota took the win by seven points.  Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 24 points in the game.

The Cardinals hit the road for the second night in a row traveling to Lake Preston on Friday.  The Cardinals fell to the Divers 62-52.  St Mary scored 15 points in the first quarter and trailed by one at 16-15.  Lake Preston, however, outscored the Cardinals 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 35-22 lead at halftime.  The lead for the Divers grew to 22 points in the third quarter, but St Mary as able to get it down to 15 at 49-34.  St Mary would outscore Lake Preston 18-13 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Divers held for the win.  Maddie Schwebach led St Mary against Lake Preston with 18 points.

The Cardinals (3-6) will play the Lake Preston Divers again on Tuesday, January 16th in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament.  The game will be played in White at Deubrook High School at 6:00 p.m.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to the Deubrook webcast.

Dell Rapids Native One of Four to be Inducted in Lancer Athletic Hall of Fame

MMC-Michelle-ShumacherYANKTON, SD – January 11, 2018 – Mount Marty College (MMC) Athletics is proud to announce four new members to be inducted in to the Lancer Athletic Hall of Fame. The formal induction ceremony will be held on June 22, 2018 as part of the Mount Marty College Summer Reunion and Lancer Club Summer Party; however, the inductees will be introduced at half time of the men’s basketball game on Saturday, January 27th at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena.

The following individuals will be introduced:

Michelle Amundson Schumacher – Women’s Basketball (2006-2010)
Shumacher was named 1st Team All-Conference all four years. She was named NAIA 2nd Team All American her senior season, and twice was named Honorable Mention by the NAIA.  At graduation, she held six Lancer records, and was in the Top 10 Career Charts in 14 categories. She led the nation in 3 point shooting percentage her senior year. She was instrumental in leading the Lancers to the NAIA National Tournament twice, and a conference regular season championship. She was the 2010 GPAC Champions of Character award winner.  During Schumacher’s time as a Dell Rapids Quarrier, she set a number of school records, was named to the Class A All-State team three years, helped her team to an undefeated 2005-2006 season which included a state title, and was named Miss Basketball for South Dakota.

Jason Nelson – Baseball (1996-1999)
One of the greatest hitters in Lancer history, Nelson is the career record holder for batting average and home runs, His batting average was best by .41 points. At the time of his graduation, he was in the top six for career runs, and three other top five single season marks. He was named 1st Team All-Conference (SDIC) all three season he played, and was part of four conference season and tournament championships.

Jeremy Grady – Baseball (1994-1997)
Grady graduated as part of the winningest class in the history of Lancer athletics, being part of 127 baseball victories. He was known as a great defensive catcher (.976 fielding %) and, while stealing statistics were not kept, and for his outstanding arm, with opponents rarely trying to steal on him. He was named SDIC All-Conference in 1996 (2nd Team) and 1997 (1st Team). His teams won the NAIA South Dakota District his first two years, and then won the SDIC Conference his junior and senior seasons.

Laura (Wortmann) Morrison – Track and Field (2006-2009)
The four time All American in the shot put and the discus, Morrison graduated as the most decorated thrower in Lancer history. She twice placed 2nd in the discus at the National Meet, and in the process set the South Dakota College Women’s record in 2008. She holds every shot put and discus record for the Lancers, and was twice named the Mount Marty College Female Athlete of the Year. In 2009, she was named the GPAC Performer of the Meet, collecting 20 points by winning the shot put and discus, and setting the GPAC record in the discus.
