Cardinal Girls Extends Win Streak to Three

DRSMvsBal_GBB_1-22-18The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls team won their third straight game on Monday, January 22nd.  St Mary defeated the Baltic Bulldogs 68-39 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Bulldogs got off to a hot start in the first quarter.  They led the Cardinals 17-12 at the break.  St Mary, however, went on a 10-0 in the first 3:20 of the second quarter capped by a three-point shot by Ella Heinitz to take a 22-17 lead.  The Bulldogs answered with a 5-0 run over the next 1:40 to the the game at 22-22 with 3:00 to go in the first half.  The Cardinals closed out the second quarter by outscoring Baltic 6-4 to take a 28-26 lead into halftime.

The St Mary defense came was huge in the second half.  Baltic was only able to score four points in the third quarter which allowed the Cardinals to extend their lead to 37-30 heading into the final quarter.  The Bulldogs were only able to score nine points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals pulled away for the win.

Heinitz led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 points.  Clare Klein added seven points, while Sydney Cook and Cassy Geraets both had six points each.

St Mary (6-7) will look to win their fourth in a row when they host Alcester-Hudson on Thursday, January 25th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestlers Finish 6th at Dak-12 Tourney

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed sixth at the Dak-12 Conference tournament on Saturday, January 20th at Tri-Valley High School.  Dell Rapids finished with a total of 95.0 points.  Canton won the team title with 231.5 points.  Vermillion was second with 158.0 points, and Madison placed third with 125.5 points.

Six wrestlers had top-four finishes at the tournament.  Jacob Vogel, Ben Cavigielli, and Nick Palmer all placed second place in their respective weight classes.  Zach McKee had a third place finish.  Gage Carr and Lincoln Richeal both had a fourth place finish.

The Quarriers will be in Madison for another Dak-12 meet on Thursday, January 25th.

Quarriers Earns Dak-12 Win over EPJ

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team got another Dak-12 Conference win on Saturday, January 20th.  Dell  Rapids defeated the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 73-59 at Elkton in the final game of a double header.

The Quarriers took an early lead  of eight points after the first quarter at 19-11.  Both teams scored 18 points each in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids continued to lead by eight points by a score of 37-29 at halftime.  Elk Point-Jefferson was able to cut the lead to seven by the end of the third quarter at 52-45, but Dell Rapids pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Huskies 21-14 for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 47% from the field in the game.  They were 41% from three-point area and 75% from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 39 team rebounds, 20 team assists, and only turned the ball over six times.

Four players finished in double-figures for the Quarriers in the game.  Carson Rentz had a team-high 20 points along with three assists.  Mason Schmidt added 19 points and five rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch added another double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds along with four blocked shots.  Drew Van Regenmorter had 10 points and seven assists.  Logan Heim had six points, six rebounds, and five assists.

The Quarriers (7-4) will host Vermillion as part of a double header with the girls on Thursday, January 25th.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Avenge Loss at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys team avenged a season-opening, 13-point loss to the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Saturday, January 20th.  The Cardinals defeated the Raiders 64-44 to take third place at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament at Elkton.  The Raiders had defeated St Mary 63-50 start the 2017-2018 season on December 8th.

The Raiders held a lead after the first quarter of play at 15-14.  That is when the Cardinal defense took control.  St Mary held Oldham-Ramona/Rutland to just six second-quarter points, and the Cardinals took a 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.  St Mary was able to extend the lead to 10 points by the end of the third quarter at 43-33.  St Mary then scored 21 fourth-quarter points to cruise to victory.

The Cardinals (7-4) will travel to Canistota to play the Hawks on Friday, January 26th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

EPJ Huskies Stuns Quarrier Girls

A day after scoring 80 points against Sioux Valley, the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls were held to just 37 points and lost to the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 40-37 at Elk Point on Saturday, January 20th.

Dell Rapids was held to just two first quarter points, and Elk Point-Jefferson led 6-2 after the first quarter of play.  The Huskies outscored Dell Rapids 13-11 in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 19-13 by halftime.  The Quarriers made a run in the third quarter and outscored the Huskies 14-5 in the the quarter to take a 27-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids was held to just 10 points while the Huskies scored 16 as Elk Point-Jefferson came away with the upset victory.

Emma Paul led the Quarriers with 12 points in the game.  Arial Hoffman had seven points.  Jayda Knuppe tallied five points.  Aspen Hansen and Sydney Stofferahn each had four points, while Ravyn Hoffman had three points, and Kaylee Hennen had two points.

Dell Rapids (9-4) will host Vermillion on Thursday, January 25th as part of a double header with the boys.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Take Fifth at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team took fifth place at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament this year.  The Cardinals ended the tournament with a 47-43 overtime win against the Colman-Egan Hawks at Elkton on Saturday, January 20th.

The Cardinals opened up the DVC tournament on Tuesday, January 16th at Deubrook High School with a 67-51 loss to Lake Preston.  St Mary followed that with a 47-14 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday, January 19th to advance to the 5th/6th place game against Colman-Egan.

Colman-Egan had an early lead of two points with 6:31 to go in the first quarter, but St Mary led for most of the game.  The Cardinals held an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Hawks cut the lead to a point at 21-20 at halftime.  St Mary pushed the to 10 points with 2:02 to go in the third quarter, but Colman-Egan cut the lead to 36-29 by the end of the quarter.  The Hawk defense held St Mary to just four points in the final quarter and made a three-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime tied 40-40.  St Mary responded in the overtime period by outscoring Colman-Egan 7-3, and Sydney Cook made two clutch free throws with :05 left in the overtime to secure the victory for the Cardinals.

Cook led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds in the game.  Ella Heinitz had 13 points and three assists.  Maddie Schwebach finished with eight points and eight rebounds, and Cassy Geraets had six points in the game.

St Mary (5-7) will host Baltic on Monday, January 22nd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girl’s Team Lights up Scoreboard in Win

DRvsSV_GBB_1-19-18The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls scored 80 points in a win over the Sioux Valley Cossacks on Friday, January 19th at Dell Rapids High School.  Dell Rapids scored at least 16 points in each quarter and went on to win 80-65.

Both teams were on fire offensively in the first quarter.  Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage.  Sioux Valley was able to sink a last-second shot to take a 17-16 lead after the first quarter. That’s when the Dell Rapids offense really got going.  The Quarriers scored 24 points while holding Sioux Valley to just 11 in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids led 40-28 at halftime, and this run helped the Quarriers stay far enough ahead the remainder of the game.  Dell Rapids scored another 19 points in the third quarter and extended their lead to 15 points at 59-44 heading into the final quarter.  Sioux Valley made a little run early in the fourth and cut the lead down to nine, but Dell Rapids was able to maintain about a 10-12 point lead throughout much of the quarter for the win.

Arial Hoffman had a game-high 25 points, 20 of those coming in the first half.  Aspen Hansen finished with 16 points, and Sydney Stofferahn added 11 points.  Emma Paul tallied nine points, Ravyn Hoffman had eight points, and Jayda Knuppe finished with seven points.  Sioux Valley was led by Carly Granum with 23 points and Lynsey Stevens with 17 points.

Dell Rapids (9-3) will now play Elk Point-Jefferson in Elk Point on Saturday, January 20th as part of a girls and boys double header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media with a video only stream.

Quarrier Wrestling Splits Triangular in Garretson

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team earned a split at a triangular in Garretson on Thursday, January 18th.  Dell Rapids lost to Sioux Falls O’Gorman 43-36, but the Quarriers defeated Garretson 60-22.

Dell Rapids will travel back to Tri-Valley for the Dak-12 Conference tournament on Saturday, January 20th.

Madison Survives Quarrier Boys

DRvsMad_BBB_1-18-18The #1 Madison Bulldogs remained undefeated after grinding out a 67-60 win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, January 18th at Dell Rapids High School.  A fourth quarter comeback sealed the win for the Bulldogs.

The first 4:00 of the game were back-and-forth as Dell Rapids held a slim 8-7 lead.  Madison then went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to go ahead 15-8.  The quarter ended with Madison leading 19-14.  The Bulldogs maintained about a six-point lead through the first half of the second quarter and then built that lead to 10 points at 30-20 with 2:30 to go in the first half.  Dell Rapids closed the half with a 9-2 run with made three-point baskets by Jeffrey Schuch, Drew Van Regenmorter, and Elijah Story.  Madison led 32-29 at halftime.

The Quarriers continued their run into the third quarter.  With 4:52 to go, Schuch made a three-point shot from the top of the key to give Dell Rapids a 38-36 lead.  The two teams were then tied at 38-38 and then again at 41-41 with 2:54 in the third quarter.  Dell Rapids grabbed the lead again and held it for the remainder of the quarter.  The Quarriers led 47-46 heading into the final quarter.  Madison again tied the game with 5:26 to go at 51-51 after a made three-point shot by Jadon Janke.  Dell Rapids went on a 5-1 run over the next minute.  The Quarriers held their largest lead of the game of four points at 56-52 with 4:14 to go after a made three-pointer by Logan Heim.  The Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run and regained the lead at 57-56 with 2:23 to go.  The lead grew to 60-56 with 1:32 left on the clock.  Dell Rapids was unable to get any closer than two points the remainder of the game as Madison made their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 40% from the field.  They were 28% from the three-point area and 67% from the free-throw line, shooting only nine free throws in the game.  The Quarriers had 36 team rebounds and 14 team assists.

Schuch finished with a game-high 18 points, 17 rebounds and three blocked shots.  Carson Rentz had 11 points and six assists.  Mason Schmidt tallied 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Van Regenmorter and Story both ended with seven points in the game.  Heim finished with five points and eight rebounds.

Dell Rapids (6-4) will travel to Elk Point to take on the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 20th.  Big Sioux Media will have a video only stream of the double header with the girls.

Cardinal Boys Fall in DVC Semifinals

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Colman-Egan Hawks in the semifinal round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Lake Preston on Thursday, January 18th.  The Hawks advanced to the finals with a 70-47 final over the Cardinals.

Colman-Egan built a lead in the first quarter that the Cardinals could not overcome.  The Hawks led by 10 points after the first quarter at 18-8.  The lead for Colman-Egan extended to 16 points by halftime at 38-22.  The Cardinals kept even with the Hawks in the third quarters as both teams scored 13 points.  Colman-Egan did outscore St Mary 19-12 in the final quarter.

St Mary shot 30% from the field in the first half, and 38% for the game.  They were 33% from beyond the three-point line and 53% from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals were out rebounded 42-15 in the game.

Luke Brown led the team with 16 points and two rebounds.  Connor Libis had 14 points and three rebounds.  Connor Kangas had six points, Max Herber had four points, Drew Wood had three points, and Weston Geraets and Ethan Geraets both finished with two points.  Colman-Egan was led by Bodee Groos and Keith Crisp with 22 points each.

The Cardinals (6-4) will play in the 3rd/4th place game of the DVC tournament against Oldham-Ramona/Rutland at 4:00 p.m. in Elkton on Saturday, January 20th.
