Quarrier Cheer Team Places 2nd at Sioux Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team competed in the six-team Sioux Valley Invite on Thursday, September 23rd.

Dell Rapids finished second with a total of 124.5 points.  Sioux Valley placed first with 181 points.  Deubrook was third just a half point behind Dell Rapids with 124 points.  Brookings cheer team placed fourth followed by Redfield and then Arlington-Lake Preston.

The Quarriers will be at the O’Gorman Invite at O’Gorman High School on Tuesday, September 28th for their next competition.

Quarriers and Cardinals Compete at Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite

Both the Dell Rapids Quarriers and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country teams participated in the Dell Rapids Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, September 22nd.

The Quarrier girls finished sixth as a team with 80 points.  The Cardinals were eighth with 108 points.

Garretson Survives Upset-Minded Quarriers

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team had one thing on their mind on Tuesday, September 21st, and that was to get a statement win over the #4 ranked Garretson Blue Dragons.  The Quarriers did just about that, but the Blue Dragons held off the Quarriers for a five-set win.

After an early 7-7 tie in the opening set, the Quarriers gained some momentum.  Dell Rapids went on an 8-2 run for a 15-9 lead.  The lead grew to 10 points at 22-12.  Garretson couldn’t overcome the lead, and Dell Rapids took the first set 25-17.

The Quarriers used that energy to build an early 6-1 lead in the second set.  The Blue Dragons were able to stop the Quarrier run and go on one of their own.  Garretson responded with a 9-1 run for a 10-7 lead.  Dell Rapids was able to regain the lead at 15-14 and push that lead to three at 17-14.  The set was once again tied at 19-19 before Garretson finished on a 6-2 advantage for a 25-21 win.

The Blue Dragons were able to build a 12-6 lead at the midway point of the third set.  The Quarriers were able to cut the lead in half at 15-12, but that was as close as they could get.  Garretson went on an 8-1 run for a 10-point advantage, 23-13, and won the third set 25-15 for a 2-1 match lead.

Garretson again got out to a lead in the fourth set, this time at 12-7.  Dell Rapids rallied to tie the score at 14-14.  The Quarriers then went on a 6-2 run for a 20-16 advantage.  Dell Rapids would not lose the lead and won the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.

The fifth set went back-and-forth early.  The score was tied at each point up to 5-5.  The Quarriers took the first lead of more than one point and scored five straight for a 10-5 lead.  Garretson called a timeout and were able to regroup.  After the timeout, the Blue Dragons scored eight straight points for a 13-10 lead.  Dell Rapids was only able to get it 14-12 as Garretson took the set 15-12 to win the match.

Sophi Randall had eight kills, two ace serves, 20 blocks, 11 digs, and 12 set assists.  Kenzie Garry finished the match with nine kills, seven blocks, and five digs.  JoJo Henry added seven kills, three ace serves, two blocks, and nine digs.  Riley Hill finished with four kills, four ace serves, five blocks, 11 digs, and 17 set assists.  Lexi Ingalls had 11 digs on defense.  Lauryn Kloth had five kills, 10 blocks, and five digs.  Kylee Fiddelke had two kills and seven blocks.

Dell Rapids (7-6) will travel to Flandreau on Thursday, September 23rd.

Garretson Girls Soccer Falls to Dakota Valley in Final Home Match

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team held their final home match of the 2021 season on Tuesday, September 21st.  The Blue Dragons hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers, and the Panthers won the match, 2-0.

The first goal for the Panthers came late in the first half.  With 3:15 remaining, Dakota Valley got behind the Garretson defense on a break-away and got the goal for a 1-0 lead.  The Panthers scored a second-half goal with 11:07 to play to make the score 2-0.

Garretson currently had a 2-9-1 record and will finish their season on the road at Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 23rd.

Quarrier Boys Golf Team Plays in Dak-12 Tournament

After a postponement of one day, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team played in the Dak-12 Tournament on Tuesday, September 21st, in Madison.  The tournament was originally scheduled for Monday, but weather forced a one-day delay.

Dell Rapids finished 11th with a total score of 469.  Vermillion won the conference team title with a score of 340.  West Central was second with 347, and Sioux Falls Christian placed third at 358.

Carter Traill had the low score for the Quarriers with a round of 103.  Oscar Anderson had a round of 114.  Ryder VanZee had a 122.  Nick Snyder finished  with a 130.  Tyler Tjaden and Gage Schultz both had a round of 135.

The Quarriers will play in the Region 1A Tournament in Madison on Monday, September 27th.

Quarrier Volleyball Wins in Five at Baltic

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team won their third straight match after an exciting five-set win over the Baltic Bulldogs in Baltic on Monday, September 20th.

After an early 9-8 lead for the Quarriers in the opening set, Dell Rapids went on a bit of a run to open a lead they would not lose.  The Quarriers scored six straight for a 15-8 advantage.  Baltic got within four at 15-11, but that was as close as they would get as Dell Rapids took the first set 25-18.

Dell Rapids used the momentum from the first set to build a 9-4 lead to start the second set.  From that point the Bulldogs were only able to get within four again at 10-6.  The Quarriers cruised to a 25-12 win for a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was much closer throughout most of it.  Baltic, however, was able to take a slim lead to five points at 20-15 late in the set.  The Quarriers got on a run thanks to the serving of Riley Hill.  The Bulldogs struggled with the serve receive from Hill which allowed Dell Rapids to score six straight for a 21-20 lead.  Baltic was able to regroup to stop the rally and win the third set 25-23.

Baltic got on a roll in the fourth set.  After a 5-5 tie, the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run for a 17-7 lead.  They finished the set with a 25-12 win to force the fifth and final set.  Dell Rapids struck first in the fifth set with five straight points for a 5-0 lead.  The Bulldogs responded with five straight points of their own for a 5-5 tie.  The set was tied again at 7-7.  Baltic took their only lead of the set at 8-7, but then Dell Rapids went on a 7-1 run for a 14-9 lead before winning 15-10.

Sophi Randall and JoJo Henry both finished with 15 kills in the match.  Kenzie Garry had seven.  Hill had a great match at the service line with 10 aces.  Randall added four ace serves.  Randall also had a team-high 13 blocks.  Lauryn Kloth had eight blocks.  Six different players finished in double figures in digs.  Garry had 16.  Randall had 13 digs, Hill finished with 12, and Henry had 11.  Lexi Ingalls and Emma Molskness both had 10 digs each.  Hill finished with a team-high 29 set assists, and Randall finished with 13.

Sami Polzin had 12 kills for Baltic followed by Elyssa Clark with 11.  Emma VanRegenmorter had eight kills along with four blocks.  Polzin also led the team with 13 digs.  Berklee Erickson had 10 digs, and Clark finished with nine.  Baily Teveldal had 17 set assists in the match, and Jacie Wendland had 15 assists.

Garretson Girls Soccer Loses and Draws in Past Two Matches

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team had one loss and one draw in their last two matches.

On Thursday, September 16th, Garretson hosted the #1 team in Class A, the West Central Trojans.  West Central got a goal in each half of the match for a 2-0 victory over the Blue Dragons.  Garretson then hosted the Groton Tigers on Saturday, September 18th.  Garretson was able to earn a 0-0 draw against the Tigers.

With only two matches left in the season, Garretson currently is in eighth place in the standings.  The top six teams qualify for the state tournament.  Groton is currently in the sixth spot with 39.938 points.  St Thomas More is seventh with 39.667 points, and Garretson has 38.591 points.

The Blue Dragons will have their final home match of the season on Tuesday, September 21st when they host Dakota Valley.  Their final regular season match will be at Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 23rd.

Quarriers’ Late Rally Secures Win over Lennox

Three scores in the final quarter lifted the Dell Rapids Quarriers to a 28-14 win over the Lennox Orioles at home on Friday, September 19th.  The first three quarters of the game had defensive stops and near misses on offense, but the Quarriers scored in a hurry in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Dell Rapids got the only touchdown in the first half.  Landon Ruesink scored on a seven-yard run with 7:04 in the opening quarter.   Aiden Boechler made the extra point to give Dell Rapids a 7-0 lead.  That score held for the remainder of the first half.

Lennox started to pick up momentum late in the third quarter.  Jackson Arlt scored on a three-yard run to pull the Orioles within a point.  The extra point was missed as it bounced off the left upright.  Dell Rapids kept the lead at 7-6 after three quarters of play.

The Quarriers quickly took the momentum back from Lennox.  On the very next drive, Ruesink scored on a 33-yard run with 10:27 to go in the game.  Austin Henry completed a pass to Ruesink for the two-point conversion to make the score 15-6.  After a turnover on downs, Dell Rapids took over at about midfield.  Landon VonHoltum found the endzone with 5:55 to go on an eight-yard run.  The extra point was no good, but Dell Rapids led 21-6.  Just :54 later, the Quarriers scored a defensive touchdown when Brayden Pankonen intercepted a pass and returned it 64 yards for the score.  Boechler made the extra point to push the lead to 28-6.  Lennox did get a score with 1:16 to go in the game and also made the two-point conversion.

Dell Rapids had a total of 287 yards of offense, 248 rushing yards and 39 passing yards.  Lennox finished with  473 yards of offense, 123 rushing yards and 350 passing yards.  The Quarriers were 6-11 on third down conversions and one turnover.  The Orioles finished 4-12 on third down and 2-6 on fourth down.  Lennox also turned the ball over three times.

Ruesink finished with 14 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the running attack.  VonHoltum had 16 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.  Pankonen had eight carries for 47 yards.  Henry was 3-6 passing for 39 yards.  Ruesink had two catches for 24 yards, and Pankonen had a catch for 15 yards. 

Ruesink also led the team in tackles with 11 and had an interception.  Pankonen had nine tackles and an interception.  Mason Stubbe had eight tackles.  Jake Henry and Aiden Geraets both finished with seven tackles each.  Ian Mason had six tackles and a fumble recovery.  

Dell Rapids (3-1) will travel to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Friday, September 24th.

Quarrier Volleyball Wins Back-and-Forth Match at Tri-Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarriers and Tri-Valley Mustangs had quite the battle on Thursday, September 16th at Tri-Valley High School.  The two teams traded set wins and needed five sets to determine the winner.

Tri-Valley opened the match with a 25-21 victory.  Dell Rapids came back and cruised through the second set for a 25-12 win.  The third set went to the Mustangs by a 25-18 score.  Once again Dell Rapids cruised through another set, winning the fourth 25-13.  With the match tied 2-2, it came down to the fifth set.  Dell Rapids came out victorious with a 15-12 score.

JoJo Henry led the team with 14 kills.  Sophi Randall finished with 11.  Kenzy Garry had seven kills, and Lauren Kloth had six.  Lexi Ingalls and Riley Hill both had a team-high five ace serves.  Randall added three.  Randall led the team in blocks with 12 on the night, while Garry notched eight.  Three players finished in double figures for digs.  Henry had 16 digs, Garry had 15, and Hill finished with 13.  Randall also had 18 set assists, and Hill had 17.

The Quarriers (6-5) will travel to Baltic on Monday, September 20th.

Dell Rapids Boys Golf 8th at EPJ Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team played in the Elk Point-Jefferson Match Play Invite on Thursday, September 16th.  This is the one tournament a year that points and places are based on bracketed match play rules.

Three of the Quarrier golfers had seventh place finishes in their respective brackets.  They were Ryder VanZee, Konrad Richael, and Lauden VonHoltum.  The other players finished eighth in their brackets.  They were Carter Traill, Tyler Tjaden, Oscar Anderson, Nick Snyder, and Gage Schultz.

Each place was given a point value, and Dell Rapids finished with 11 total points on the day.  West Central and Sioux Falls Christian both had 70 team points.

The Quarriers will be at the Madison Golf and Country Club on Monday, September 20th for the Dak-XII Conference Tournament.
