Dell Rapids Legion Splits Final Two Regular Season Games

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team had their final two regular season games at Colton on Friday, July 16th.  Dell Rapids split the two games with Colton.  Colton won the first game 4-3, but Dell Rapids took the second game 7-4.

Noah Swartwout put Dell Rapids on the board in the top of the first inning in game number one by scoring on an error.  The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning.  Swartwout had an RBI ground out to score Ashaun Roach-Valandra to give Dell Rapids a 2-0 lead.  Colton got one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to force extra innings.  Brady Larson drove home a run in the top of the 10th inning for Dell Rapids on an RBI single to left field, but Colton scored two times in the bottom of the 10th to take the win.

Larson had two hits and an RBI.  Roach-Valandra also had two hits.  Swartwout had a triple and an RBI.  Riley Peter added a double.  Landon Ruesink, Bryce Sommerfeld, and Connor Libis all had a single in the game.  Ruesink pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing an earned run on two hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.  Larson pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing a run on a hit.  Caleb Kittleson pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

In the five-inning second game, Colton scored first in the bottom of the first inning.  Dell Rapids tied the game in top of the second inning on an RBI single by Sommerfeld.  The scored was 1-1 after three innings of play.  Dell Rapids then scored four times in the top of the fourth inning.  Libis had an RBI double.  Riley Peter scored on a wild pitch, and then Swartwout had a two-run single to give Dell Rapids a 5-1 lead.  Dell Rapids added two more in the top of the fifth.  Both Libis and Roach-Valandra scored on wild pitches to push the lead to 7-1.  Colton put together a rally scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth, but Dell Rapids was able to stop the rally to secure the win.

Swartwout had a hit and two RBIs in the second game.  Libis had a double and an RBI.  Sommerfeld had a single and an RBI.  Ruesink and Kittleson also had singles in the game.  Andrew Van Dam pitched five innings allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Dell Rapids will now play in a regional tournament Monday, July 19th through Thursday, July 22nd in Flandreau.  Dell Rapids will play Flandreau on Monday at 6:00 p.m.

Dell Rapids 14U Wins Region 2A Tournament

The Dell Rapids 14U team won all four of their games at the Region 2A tournament in Northville bringing home the region title.  The tournament was held Wednesday, July 14th through Friday, July 16th.

In their first game on Wednesday morning, Dell Rapids had no problems with Madison Maroon.  Dell Rapids got out to a 7-0 lead after the first four innings.  Madison scored two in the top of the fifth inning, but Dell Rapids responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning for a 12-2 win on the 10-run rule.

After a one-game break, Dell Rapids then played Volga in their second game on Wednesday.  The game was tied 1-1 after two innings of play.  Dell Rapids scored five times in the top of the third inning, but Volga responded with three runs to make the score 6-4.  Dell Rapids then had a 10-run fourth inning and added four more in top of the fifth for a 20-4 win on the 10-run rule.

In the semifinal game on Thursday, Dell Rapids played the host team Warner-Ipswich-Northville (WIN).  Dell Rapids scored five runs in the first two innings for a 5-0 lead.  WIN picked up a run in the top of the third, but Dell Rapids also scored a run to keep the lead at five runs, 6-1.  WIN scored three times in the top of the fifth inning, and Dell Rapids held on to a 6-4 lead after five innings.  Dell Rapids then scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule 14-4.

WIN battled back to make it to the championship game on Friday to play Dell Rapids once again.  This time Dell Rapids’ offense scored in every inning.  WIN scored the first two runs in the top of the first, but Dell Rapids had six runs in the bottom of the inning and three more in the bottom of the second for a 9-2 lead.  Dell Rapids then outscored WIN 9-1 the rest of the game for a 18-3 win in four innings on the 15-run rule to win the region championship.

Cole Ruesink had 12 hits over the four games including five doubles and a triple along with six RBIs.  Lincoln Fersdahl had 11 hits, with five doubles and a triple to go with 15 RBIs.  Talan Millage had seven hits, one of them a double, and three RBIs.  Grady Lamer had five hits, including one double, and one RBI.  Tad Tjaden finished with five hits, with two doubles, and two RBIs.  Logan Donovan had four singles and three RBIs.  Cooper Frost had three hits, one a double, and four RBIs.  Kenny Swanson had three hits and four RBIs.  Quinn Carr had three singles and five RBIs.  Brandon Schmidt had two hits, one double, and an RBI.  Ethan Vanderwerf had a hit and an RBI.

Fersdahl also pitched 5 2/3 innings in the tournament allowing one earned run on one hit with six walks and 10 strikeouts.  Carr pitched five innings giving up three earned runs on three hits with five walks and 11 strikeouts.  Tjaden also pitched five innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.  Ruesink had 2 1/3 innings pitched giving up three runs, two earned, on one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.  Frost pitched an inning giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks.  Millage pitched an inning giving up one hit and striking out one.

Dell Rapids will now play in the 2021 South Dakota VFW 14U Class A State Tournament in Vermillion Friday, July 23rd through Sunday, July 25th.  They will play Vermillion at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in their opening game.

Gamecocks Win Pitcher’s Duel over Lennox

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks and Lennox were locked in a pitcher’s duel in a close game on Thursday, July 15th in Lennox.

Lennox scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI ground out.  The score remained 1-0 until the top of the ninth.  After a single by Devon Garry and double by Joe Hanisch, Cole Hellie hit a ground ball and reached on an error by the shortstop.  Both Garry and Hanisch scored on the play to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead.  Lennox got two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Hartford-Humboldt was able to keep Lennox off the board for a 2-1 win.

Drew DeMers and Hanisch both had a double in the game.  Garry had a single.  Tyler Renken pitched seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Broc Haldeman pitched two innings allowing a hit with four strikeouts.

Colton Legion Splits Double-header with Dell Rapids

Colton Legion split a double-header with Dell Rapids in Colton on Friday, July 16th.  Colton won the first game 4-3, but Dell Rapids took the second game 7-4.

Dell Rapids got on the board in the top of the first inning in game number one by scoring on an error. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning. Dell Rapids then got another run in the top of the fifth for a 2-0 lead. Colton got one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Alex Andresen had an RBI double to make the score 2-1.  Colton then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Braydon Humpel had an RBI single with two outs to tie the game 2-2. Dell Rapids broke the tie in the top of the tenth inning, but Colton came back in the bottom of the inning.  Humpel had another RBI single to tie the game, and then Preston Wieman had the game-winning hit for the 4-3 win.

Humpel had two hits and two RBIs.  Wieman also had two hits and an RBI.  Andresen had a double and an RBI.  Logan Cowill finished with a double.  Nick Hass pitched three innings allowing an earned run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Cowill pitched two innings allowing an earned run on four hits with two strikeouts.  Luke Lofswold pitched five innings allowing an unearned run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

In the five-inning second game, Colton scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Andresen scored on an error for an early 1-0 lead.  Dell Rapids tied the game in top of the second inning. The scored was 1-1 after three innings of play, and then Dell Rapids scored four times in the top of the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead.  Dell Rapids added two more in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 7-1.  Colton put together a rally scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth.  Hass scored on an error on a ground ball by Riley Carlson.  Cole Skadsen scored on an error by the pitcher, and Andresen had an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-4, but Dell Rapids ended the rally there to get the win.

Andresen had three hits and an RBI.  Lofswold, Hass, and Skadsen all had singles.  Carlson had an RBI.  Andresen pitched two innings allowing an earned run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Carlson pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing four earned run on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Humpel pitched 1 1/3 inning allowing two earned runs on no hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley 16U Holds onto Win over Madison

Tri-Valley held a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning over Madison on Thursday, July 15th.  Tri-Valley ended the game with just a slim one-run victory at 10-9.

Tri-Valley scored two runs right away in the top of the first.  Beau Keith scored on an error and Lawson Loiseau drew a bases-loaded walk for an early 2-0 lead.  After Madison got one run in the bottom of the first inning, Tri-Valley added two more in the top of the second.  Both Kaden Egger and Keith scored on an error in the inning.  Two more runs scored in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Mason Hendrixson.  Madison scored two times in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-3.

Tri-Valley then had a four-run sixth inning.  Egger scored on an error, Cole Foken had an RBI triple, Hendrixson had an RBI single, and then Hendrixson scored on an error to push the lead to 10-3.  Madison put together a big rally in the bottom of the seventh.  The first six batters reached based before an out was recorded, and all six scored to cut the lead to 10-9.  Tri-Valley was then able to get three of the next four batters out to stop the rally and win the game.

Hendrixson had two hits and three RBIs.  Loiseau had two hits and an RBI.  Keith had two hits, including a double.  Everett Althoff also had two hits.  Focken had a triple and an RBI.  Egger, Jydin Dahl, Noah Haynes, and Ledger Burggraff all had a single in the game. 

Haynes pitched six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Hendrixson allowed six earned runs on four hits with two walks.  Egger got the final three outs allowing just one hit while striking out one.

West Central 16U Wins Big over Hamlin

West Central scored 16 runs in just two innings in a 16-0 win over Hamlin on Thursday, July 15th.  The two teams were tied 0-0 after the first inning, but West Central then scored seven runs in the second inning and nine more in the bottom of the third to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Andrew Zimmere had two hits, one a double, and four RBIs.  Dylan Stromer had two hits and two RBIs.  Will Nester had a double with two RBIs.  Xzavian Ferris had a double and an RBI.  Cade Vander Woude and Jon Murray both had a single and an RBI.  Duece Sherard finished with a single.  Dalton Mulder, Owen Heath, and Gavin Gerlach all had an RBI. 

Heath pitched three innings giving up just two hits while striking out seven batters.

PBR Gets League Win over Salem

Dell Rapids PBR won for the fourth time in their last five games after an 11-1 win over Salem on Thursday, July 15th.

PBR got three runs in the top of the third inning.  Riley Hoffman had an RBI ground out scoring Trey Randel.  Carter Gullickson scored on a wild pitch, and David Kirby had an RBI single for an early 3-0 lead.  Salem picked up a run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 3-1.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the seventh inning.  PBR then scored eight times in the top of the seventh.  Weston Hanson had an RBI single.  Kirby drove home two with a single.  Beau Behrend had an RBI single.  Gullickson brought home two more with a double, and Hanson also had two more RBIs in the inning with a double.  Salem was held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Hanson had four hits, including a double, and three RBIs.  Kirby had three hits and three RBIs.  Gullickson had two doubles and two RBIs.  Hoffman and Behrend both had two hits and an RBI.  Riley Calhoon, Tanner Solberg, and Randel all had a single in the game as well.   Hoffman pitched seven innings allowing an unearned run on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Four Run Inning Keys Dell Rapids 16U Win over Parker

Dell Rapids 16U scored four times in the third inning which was enough to get a 4-1 win over Parker at home on Thursday, July 15th.

The two teams were scoreless through the first two innings of play.  Parker scored their run in the top of the third inning on an RBI double.  Dell Rapids got all four of their runs in the bottom of the inning with two outs.  Will Jaton had an RBI single.  CJ Smith reached on an error that also scored Jaton.  Sutton Williams then had a two-run single to give Dell Rapids the 4-1 lead. 

Williams finished with a hit and two RBIs.  Jaton had a hit and an RBI.  John Mortrude also had a hit.  Joe Rechtenbaugh pitched a complete game allowing an unearned run on just one hit with three walks and six strikeouts.

Breakfast and Lunch Free Again at Dell Rapids in 2021-2022 School Year

The Dell Rapids School Board announced that breakfast and lunches will be free of cost again for the 2021-2022 school year during their regular meeting on Monday, July 12th.

The meals will be free under the federal SSO program.  Adult breakfast prices will be $1.95, and the adult lunch price will be $3.85.  Milk will be $.50.  A la carte items will be priced in accordance with federal regulations.

The school board also set other rates and prices for the school year.  Admission to activities at Dell Rapids will be $3.00 for students K-12 and $5.00 for adults.  Prices will be $4.00 and $6.00 respectively for double-headers.  Activity tickets are also available for purchase.  Resident senior citizens will receive a free permanent pass and can be obtained from the district office.  K-8 student pass is $15.00.  9-12 student pass is $20.00.  A 10-punch pass for adults is $30.00 and an all-season pass for adults is $50.00.  A family all-season pass for parents/guardians and school-age children living in the same home is $100.00.

Bus rates were also set for the year.  Resident in-town and open-enrollment (on designated route), St Mary non-resident rural transportation (on designated route), and Haven transportation (between elementary school and River Community Church) is $80.00/child or $200.00/family.  St Mary transportation off designated route will be $432.50 annually per mile added to the route.  Open-enrollment transportation off designated route (as determined by the school board on an individual basis) will also be $432.50 annually per mile added to the route.

Wood Ducks Drop Make-up Game to PBR

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks traveled to Dell Rapids to play PBR on Tuesday, July 13th to play a make-up game from May 27th.  PBR grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth and scored another late run for a 5-3 victory.

The Wood Ducks got on the board in the top of the first inning when Drew Eldeen scored on an error on a ground ball hit by Tyler Lundburg.  The score stayed 1-0 until PBR scored two times in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wood Ducks regained the lead in the top of the fifth.  Austin Smith had an RBI single, and Daniel Hoey followed with an RBI single for a 3-2 lead.  PBR, again, scored time times in the bottom of the fifth inning.  PBR would also add a run in the bottom of the eighth for the 5-3 win.

Bennett Sebert had two hits, one of them a double.  Smith and Hoey both had a hit and an RBI.  Eldeen had a double.  Jake Ellens also had a single.  Eldeen pitched seven innings allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits with five walks and eight strikeouts.  Smith pitched an inning striking out one.
