Hartfold-Humboldt Gamecocks out of District 4B Tournament

July 26, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks had their season come to an end after back-to-back losses at the District 4B tournament in Colman.  The Gamecocks lost their first game on Saturday, July 24th and then lost their second game on Sunday, July 25th.

Going into the district tournament as the fourth seed, the Gamecocks took on the fifth-seeded Flandreau Cardinals on Saturday.  Flandreau scored three runs in the first two innings, picked up another run in the top of the fifth, and then scored six times in the top of the sixth inning for a 10-0 lead.  The Gamecocks were held to just two hits, and the game ended in the seventh inning on the 10-run rule with Flandreau winning 10-0.

Tyler Renken had a double, and Drew DeMers had a single for the two hits.  Renken pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Noah Vettrus pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on a hit with a walk.

The loss sent the Gamecocks to the loser’s bracket to play the seventh-seeded Colman A’s on Sunday in an elimination game.  Colman also scored three runs in the first two innings for a 3-0 lead.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run double by Joe Hanisch.  Colman regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs, but the Gamecocks took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the inning with three more runs.  Devon Garry had an RBI single, and Hanisch had a two-run home run to give the Gamecocks a 6-5 lead.  The lead was short-lived as Colman picked up two more runs in the top of the sixth inning and then five more in the top of the eighth for a 12-6 lead.  The Gamecocks tried to make a comeback.  Hanisch had an RBI single, Garry scored on an error, and Jon Maras had an RBI single to cut the lead to 12-9, but that was all the Gamecocks would get as Colman took the win.

Hanisch had three hits, including a home run and double, and drove home six runs.  Garry had two hits and an RBI.  Cam Quigley and Drew Maras both had two hits.  J. Maras had a hit and an RBI.  Broc Haldeman had a double, and Renken had a single.  Micah Warrington pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, only one earned, on eight hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Cole Barthel pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing just one walk.  Haldeman pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Quigley pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing three hits with a strikeout.
