Quarrier Volleyball 2021 Season Starts with Road Loss

August 25, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team started their 2021 season on the road in Elkton on Tuesday, August 24th.  The Quarriers are coming off a 5-13 record in 2020 that also saw the team lose two weeks of matches due to Covid.

Head coach Erica Fersdahl said, “I think we played our best volleyball at the end of the season (last year), which is always our goal, and we took Baltic to five sets in the region quarterfinals.  Afterwards they went on to beat Garretson in the semfinals and lose in the SoDak 16, so I think that is a testament to our growth as a team for the year.  We are looking to build on that potential for this year and play competitively in the Dak XII as well as look to get better every practice and game in hopes of a post-season run in November.”

Coach Fersdahl mentioned the team will look to senior Mackenzie Garry, junior Emma VanRegenmorter, and freshman Sophi Randall along with other seniors Riley Hill and Brooklyn Spoonemore to lead the Quarriers.

The Quarriers first match of the year was against the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.  The Elks were able to build a four-point lead early in the first set at 10-6.  Dell Rapids then got on a roll.  They eventually tied the set and continued the momentum to an 18-13 lead.  The Elks responded and tied the set at 20-20.  They then finished the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21.

Dell Rapids built a slim lead and maintained it early in the second set.  They led 7-5 and 9-8 before Elkton-Lake Benton went on an 8-0 run to take the lead 16-9.  Dell Rapids got within four points at 23-19, but the Elks finished the set for the win 25-19.  The third set remained close through the first half as Dell Rapids held an 11-10 lead.  The Elks then took the lead and were ahead 16-15 before going on a 9-3 run to close out the set, 25-18, and win the match.

Madelynn Henry had nine kills, six digs, and an ace serve.  Garry finished with seven kills, two digs, two blocks, and an ace serve.   Randall added five kills, four digs, three blocks and 12 set assists.  Riley Hill had 10 set assists, nine digs, four blocks, and an ace serve.  VanRegenmorter had three kills and four blocks.  Kylee Fiddelke finished with four kills, four digs, four blocks, and three ace serves.  Lexi Ingalls added five digs and four set assists.

Dell Rapids (0-1) will host West Central on Thursday, August 26th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinals Fall in 2021 Football Season Opener

August 22, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals started their 2021 football season at home on Friday, August 23rd.  The Cardinals hosted the Gayville-Volin Raiders, and it was the Raiders who went home victorious, 42-8.

The Cardinals looked to get the momentum very early in the game.  Gabriel Lamb dropped Nate Quatier for a loss on the first play of the game, and then CJ Smith intercepted Quatier’s pass on the next play.  St Mary had the ball two plays after the opening kickoff.  The momentum would be short lived however.  The Raiders forced and recovered a fumble three plays later.

Kyle Hirsch scored with 7:37 in the first quarter for the Raiders.  They converted the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.  St Mary had to punt on their second drive.  The Raiders then marched down the field on their next possession.  Hirisch had a 22-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in the first quarter.  Anther two-point conversion pushed the lead to 16-0.

St Mary continued to struggle a bit offensively in their next drive.  The Raiders forced and recovered another fumble late in the quarter.  The Cardinal defense was able to hold Gayville-Volin to a punt, but the punt returned was fumbled by St Mary and recovered by the Raiders.  The Raiders turned that into points after a one-yard touchdown run by Quatier.  Another two-point conversion made the score 24-0.

The Raiders stopped a Cardinal drive that was moving in a positive direction for St Mary.  This time the drive stopped on an interception that was returned 48 yards for a touchdown by Ben Rumsey with 9:19 to play in the first half.  Gayville-Volin got another interception later in the second quarter, this time by Hirsch.  They turned that into  more points, scoring with 1:05 to play in the second quarter, and the Raiders led 36-0 at halftime.

St Mary took the kickoff to start the second half.  The Cardinals looked to be headed towards a score late in the third quarter, but the Raiders got their third interception of the game.  Rumsey intercepted a pass in the endzone and ran it back all the way for a Raider touchdown with 4:31 to play in the third quarter to make the score 42-0.  St Mary was able to find the endzone with 7:37 left in the game.  Smith connected with Camden Gilbert on a 23-yard touchdown pass.  Smith then completed a pass to Lucas Flemmer for the two point conversion.

The Raiders finished with 201 yards of offense, 104 passing yards and 97 rushing yards.  The Cardinals finished with 189 yards of offense, 107 rushing yards and 82 passing yards, but turned the ball over six times.

Ty Brown had 11 carries for 66 yards.  Gabriel Lindeman had three carries for 20 yards.  Smith finished the game 5-12 passing for 82 yards and three interceptions.  Gilbert had two catches for 32 yards and a touchdown.  Tate Bunkers had a catch for 34 yards, and Brown had a catch for 10 yards.

Noah Olund led the defense with eight tackles.  Brown finished with five tackles.  Nic Gaspar had 4.5 tackles, and Bunkers and Kyle Bares both had four tackles each.  Smith also had an interception.

The Cardinals (0-1) will travel to play the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Friday, August 27th.
