Garretson Girls Soccer Falls to West Central

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team traveled to Hartford to play the #1 ranked West Central Trojans on Tuesday, September 7th.  The Trojans proved their number one ranking with five goals in the first half and three more in the second for an 8-0 win over the Blue Dragons.

Kayla Genzlinger did have 12 saves in goal for Garretson.  Jenna VanHolland had three shots.  Morgan Damman and Joely Sterud each had one shot on goal.

Garretson (2-5-0) will play at Dakota Valley on Saturday, September 11th.

West Central Wins Madison Golf Quadrangular

The West Central Trojan boys golf team won their third event of the year as a team on Tuesday, September 7th.  The Trojans played in a quadrangular at the Madison Country Club against Madison, Flandreau, and Lennox.

West Central finished with a team score of 339.  Lennox was second with 381.  Madison had a 388, and Flandreau finished at 426.

Peyton Bettcher had the low score of the day with an 81.  Anthony Lanham and Connor Eisenbeisz both had a round of 85.  Trey Even finished with an 88.  Kamden Zomer had a 94.  Easton Eberhard finished at 95.  Cole Miles had a 96, and Connor Eich had a 97.  Connor Mebius finished at 109, and Adam Johnson fired a 110.

The Trojans will be at the Vermillion Invite on Thursday, September 9th.

West Central Volleyball Falls to EPJ at Home

Looking to end a two-match skid, the West Central Trojan volleyball team hosted the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Tuesday, September 7th.  The Trojans were unable to end the losing streak, dropping the match to the Huskies in four sets by scores of 22-25, 13-25, 25-21, and 17-25.

Grace Harden and Aubree Miller both had six kills each in the match.  Miller also had a match-high eight blocks.  Jenna Lueth had a team-high 32 digs.  Hanna Lee finished with 24 set assists.

West Central (2-3) will host Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 9th.

Trojan Girls Soccer Posts Another Shutout

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team remained undefeated on the 2021 season after another shutout win on Tuesday, September 7th.  The #1 ranked Trojans hosted the Garretson Blue Dragons and posted their fourth straight shutout win.

The Trojans scored five times in the first half for a 5-0 lead.  They then added three more goals in the second half for an 8-0 win.

West Central (7-0-0) will travel to Groton on Friday, September 10th.  They will then travel to Dakota Valley on Tuesday, September 14th.

West Central Cross Country Teams Both Place Second in Canton

Both the girls and boys cross country teams for West Central placed second at the Canton C-Hawk Invite on Tuesday, September 7th.  The races were held at Hiawatha Golf Course in Canton.

The Girls team finished with 36 total points.  Vermillion placed first with 11 points.  The boys team finished with 41 points.  Dakota Valley won the boys’ title with 21 points.

Maelee Krempges placed 7th with a time of 23:09.23.  Aubrey Borns was 8th in a time of 23:11.94.  Drew Caffrey placed 9th in a time of 23:20.72.  Elizabeth Johnson had a 19th place finish with a time of 24:16.01.  Ellie McDonald was 22nd with a time of 24:47.29.

Ben Strunk had a 3rd place finish with a time of 18:36.99.  Jonathon Roth was 8th with a time of a 19:27.95.  Jacob Peterson was 14th in a time of 20:44.21.  Blake Stark was 16th in a time of 20:56.11.  Griffin Stallman placed 18th with a time of 21:30.48.  Josh Wagner was 25th in a time of 22:45.68.

West Central will be at the Brandon Valley Invite at McHardy Park on Saturday, September 11th, and then at the Charger Invite at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, September 14th.

Tri-Valley Cross Country at Garretson

The Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team traveled to Garretson for the Jesse James Invite on Tuesday, September 7th.

Brie Peters was the lone varsity runner for the Mustangs in the girls race.  She finished in a time of 21:31.03.  Isabella Mack ran in the JV race and finished in a time of 20:48.54.

Teagin Gacke was the lone varsity runner for the boys.  Gacke finished with a time of 20:37.34.  Hunter Sargent was in the JV race and finished with a time of 21:58.70.

Tri-Valley will be at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls for the Charger Invite on Tuesday, September 14th.

Quarriers and Cardinals Race at Jesse James Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal and Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country teams traveled to Garretson for the Jesse James Invite on Tuesday, September 7th.

Five runners competed in the girls varsity race for the Cardinals.  Cami Wolles had a time of 23:47.17.  Sierra Klein posted a time of 24:47.44.  Addy Gilbert finished in 25:07.45.  Lucy Vargas had a time of 25:37.03, and Madison Reiff had a time of 25:48.17.

Dell Rapids had two runners in the girls varsity race.  Elizabeth Price finished with a time of 23:22.15.  Peyton VanZee had a time of 25:33.99.

Noah Reiff finished with a time of 20:31.12 for the Cardinal boys.  Seth Roemen had a time of 20:55.32.  Owen Vargas finished in 21:54.29.  Gabe Nelson had a time of 27:12.90

For the Dell Rapids Quarriers, Josh Fletcher placed second individually with a time of 17:53.90.  Weston Mason finished in 20:33.90.  Jack Montgomery had a time of 22:35.91.

The Quarriers will be at the Charger Invite at Yankton Trail Park on Tuesday, September 14th.  St Mary will race next in the Flyer Invite at Valley View Golf Course on Wednesday, September 15th.

Marilyn Pearce

Marilyn Pearce, 97, of Okemos, MI passed away on August 26, 2021. After a private remembrance, she will be inurned in the Dell Rapids cemetery near her mother, sister and her Olsen ancestors. www.kahlerfh.com

Marilyn was the daughter of Frederick Martini and Gladys Martini (formerly Olsen), both of Dell Rapids. Marilyn grew up in Dell Rapids and was valedictorian of the 1941 Dell Rapids High School class. She next studied music at Augustana College and later Northwestern University where she met her future husband, Frederick Pearce. They married soon thereafter and moved to Lake Linden Michigan where they raised their family.

Marilyn loved music and was a gifted singer. She continued to study and perform during most of her long life. She also enjoyed genealogy and was always eager to uncover details of her Olsen roots in Denmark and Germany where she travelled to find municipal and church archives.

Marilyn’s husband passed in 1988, but she is survived by her four children: Margery Wakefield, Charles Pearce, John Pearce, and Joann Davis. She was also the loving grandmother of 5 and the great-grandmother of 6.

Dell Rapids Dog Park Falls Just Short of Receiving Large Grant

The Dell Rapids Community Recreation Committee’s (DRCRC) dog park project was selected as one of 30 finalists for the PetSafe “Bark for Your Park” grant contest at the beginning of August.  The Dell Rapids park was picked to compete for one of five $25,000 grants for a new park.  Throughout the month of August, the nationwide public could vote once a day for the project, and the top five projects in votes would receive a $25,000 grant.

After the month of voting, the Dell Rapids project finished seventh in voting, just under 2,900 votes behind the project that finished fifth.  The Dell Rapids Dog Park project received a total of 11,056 votes.

Even though the project missed out on the grant, the DRCRC is continuing to move forward with the dog park project, which would be located next to Rickeman Field.  The group will continue to do fundraising drives along with other ideas in the planning stages.

West Central Softball Drops Two to Harrisburg

The West Central softball team lost both games of a double-header to Harrisburg on Saturday, September 4th.

In the first game, Harrisburg scored three times in the bottom of the first.  West Central got two runs in the top of the second to cut into the lead.  Caitlyn Hoff had an RBI double to score Addy Kramer, and Hoff later scored on a passed ball.  Harrisburg, however, scored three more times in the bottom of the second inning for a 6-2 advantage.  West Central got one more run in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Hoff.  That was it for the Trojans as Harrisburg took the first game 6-3.

Kramer had two hits.  Hoff had a double and two RBIs.  McKenna Sichmeller had a double, and Sammie Mallinger had a single.  Mallinger pitched all six innings allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

West Central struck first in the second game.  Kramer had an RBI sacrifice fly, and  Emillee Stofferahn scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead.  Harrisburg got a run in the top of the third and then tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the fourth inning.  The big blow game in the top of the fifth inning when Harrisburg scored four times, and the Tigers took the second game 6-2.

Izzi Parsons had two hits, including a double.  Grace Harden and Hoff each had a single, and Kramer had an RBI.  Harden pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs, one earned, on three hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  Hoff pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing an unearned run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

West Central (3-3) will play Madison and Dell Rapids on Sunday, September 12th.
