Peters and Dahl Race at Charger Invite

Brie Peters and Lizzy Dahl raced for the Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team at the  Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invite at Yankton Trails Park on Tuesday, September 14th.

Peters placed 26th individually with a time of 22:26.34.  Dahl had a time of 25:30.48.

The Mustangs will be at the Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite on Wednesday, September 22nd.

West Central Girls 7th, Boys 8th at Charger Cross Country Invite

The West Central Trojan cross country team ran in the Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invite at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, September 14th.

The girls finished seventh as a team with 120 points.  Sioux Falls Christian placed first with 37 points.  Maelee Krempges was 17th individually with a time of 21:44.81.  Drew Caffrey placed 31st in a time of 22:42.53.  Aubrey Borns was 35th at 23:01.21.  Elizabeth Johnson placed 46th in a time of 23:35.03.

The boys team placed eighth with a total of 134 points.  Sioux Falls Christian placed first as a team with 13 points.  Ben Strunk had a 12th place finish with a time of 17:55.23.  Jacob Peterson finished in a time of 19:50.14.  Jonathon Roth was seconds behind at 19:52.91.  Griffin Stallman had a time of 20:39.49, and Blake Stark finished in 20:50.00.

The Trojans will be at the Alcester-Hudson Invite on Monday, September 20th.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team won their fourth straight match on Monday, September 13th.  The Cardinals defeated the Sioux Falls Lutheran Eagles in straight sets by set scores of 25-10, 25-18, and 26-24.  During their four match winning streak, the Cardinals have only lost one set.  St Mary, now 8-1 on the season, has only lost four sets total on the year.

The Cardinals seemed ready to make quick work of the Eagles.  In the opening set, St Mary scored the six points.  They pushed the lead to 12-2 and continued to roll from there winning the first set 25-10.  Sioux Falls Lutheran regrouped during the break and jumped out to a 10-3 lead to start the second set.   St Mary, though, slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 13-13.  The set was tied again 15-15 before the Cardinals finished the set on a 10-3 run to win 25-18.  The Eagle again got out to an early lead in the third set at 9-2.  St Mary’s comeback was a bit slower than in the second set.  Sioux Falls Lutheran was able to keep a three-to-four point lead throughout much of the middle portion of the set.  The Cardinals eventually tied the set 17-17.  The teams went back and forth trading points until the score was 21-21.  The Eagles then scored the next three points to lead 24-21.  The Cardinals put one more rally together scoring the final five points for the 26-24 win.

Courtney Brown finished with 11 kills, 17 digs, and two ace serves.  Brianna Lindeman had six kills, 14 set assists, four digs, and two ace serves.  Maya Heinitz added seven kills, eight digs, and five ace serves.  Ella Griffin had two ace serves, and a block.  Madala Hanson finished with nine set assists.  Whitney Warwick also had two ace serves, and Brianna Griffin had two blocks. 

The Cardinals will travel to White to play Deubrook on Thursday, September 16th.

West Central Softball Earns Two Shutout Wins

The West Central high school softball team got two shutout wins on Sunday, September 12th in Madison.

In their first game of the day, West Central blanked Madison 10-0 while holding Madison to just one hit in the game.  West Central had a pair of five-run innings to start the game.  Jocelyn Nilson had three hits and an RBI.  Addy Kramer had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Grace Harden also had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI.  Caitlyn Maa had a double and an RBI.  Caitlyn Hoff also had a hit and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller had a triple, and Emillee Stofferahn had a single.  Hoff pitched two innings allowing a hit while walking one and striking out two.  Sammie Mallinger pitched two innings striking out five batters.

West Central then earned an 8-0 win over Dell Rapids in the second game.  Dell Rapids was held to just three hits.  The Trojans scored three in the first inning, three more in the third, and two in the sixth.  Kramer had two triples and two RBIs.  Nilson had two hits and two RBIs.  Stofferahn had a double and two RBIs.  Maa finished with a single and an RBI.  Hoff had a double, Mallinger a single, and Hanna Raethz had an RBI.  Mallinger pitched all six innings allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts.

Dell Rapids Softball Splits Weekend Games

The Dell Rapids high school softball team split in their two games on Saturday, September 11th in Madison.  Dell Rapids fell to West Central 8-0 in their first game, and then defeated Vermillion 11-6 in the second game.

West Central held Dell Rapids to just three hits in the game.  The Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the first, three more in the bottom of the third, and the final two in the bottom of the sixth.  Kylie Lebahn and Lexi Ingalls both had triples.  Kya Alderson had the other hit.  Alderson pitched six innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids rallied in the second game.  Vermillion got out to a 4-1 lead after the first two innings.  Dell Rapids, however, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third, four more in the bottom of the fourth, and two in the bottom of the fifth for an 11-4 lead.  Vermillion got two runs in the sixth inning.

Claire Wynja had four hits, including two triples, and three RBIs.  Kenzie Garry had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Haileigh Barnhart had two hits.  Lebahn finished with a double and an RBI.  Rileigh Foster had a single and an RBI.  Ingalls added a double, and Katie Kvigne had a single.  Kvigne pitched six innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Trojan Cross Country Runners Compete at Lynx Invitational

The West Central Trojan cross country team participated in the Lynx Invitational on Saturday, September 11th.

Maelee Krempges finished 11th with a time of 22:40.86.  Aubrey Borns was 12th in a time of 22:48.99.   Drew Caffrey paced 17th at 23:20.56.  Ellie McDonald was 18th in a time of 23:40.88.  Elizabeth Johnson placed 20th in a time of 24:30.00.

Ben Strunk finished 17th in a time of 18:51.66.  Jonathon Roth was 18th in a time of 18:51.79.  Jacob Peterson had a time of 20:10.19 and finished 33rd.

West Central Beats Milbank in Double Overtime

The West Central Trojan football team defeated the Milbank Bulldogs in double overtime on Friday, September 10th in Milbank.

The Bulldogs got on the board first on a two-yard run by Marshall Voeltz with 6:14 to go in the opening quarter.  Gavin Koch completed a 17-yard screen pass to Jacob Krempges for a touchdown with 3:29 to go in the quarter.  The extra point was no good, and Milbank held a 7-6 lead.  Voeltz scored again for Milbank on a five-yard run with 6:47 to play in the second quarter, but the extra point was no good.  The Bulldogs kept rolling as Kaden Krause connected with Benned Schwenn for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:18 to to go.  The extra point was good.  That was the final score of the first half, and Milbank led 20-6 at halftime.

The Trojans ignited some momentum on the first play of the third quarter.  Dierickx caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Koch.  The two-point conversion was no good, but the Trojans cut the lead to 20-12 with 11:50 to play in the third quarter.  The score remained 20-12 until about the midway point of the fourth quarter.  Koch and Dierickx connected again with 7:54 to go in the game.  This time the pass was from 20 yards away.  Justin Zirpel ran the two-point conversion into the endzone to tie the game 20-20.  Dierickx scored for the fourth time in the game after a 65-yard touchdown punt return with 6:09 to play giving West Central a 26-20 lead.  The two-point conversion was no good.  Milbank tied the game on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 4:23 to play.  The extra point was blocked, and the game was tied 26-26.  That was the final score in regulation, and the game went into overtime.

Neither team scored in the first overtime.  In the second overtime, the Trojans had the ball first and scored on fourth down.  Koch completed a pass to Dierickx from five yards away for the touchdown.  The extra point was made to give West Central a 33-26 lead.  The Bulldogs scored a touchdown on their possession and went for the two-point conversion.  The pass was incomplete at the goal line, and West Central held on for the 33-32 win.

Koch finished 12-31 passing for 216 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.  Dierickx had 10 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns.  Krempges had a catch for 17 yards and a touchdown.  Zirpel had 20 carries in the game for 56 yards.  Dierickx also had a punt return for a touchdown.

The Trojans will host Sioux Falls Christian on Friday, September 17th.

Sioux Falls Christian Blanks Tri-Valley

The Sioux Falls Christian Chargers shut out the Tri-Valley Mustangs on the gridiron on Friday, September 10th at Tri-Valley High School.

The Chargers got a score in the opening quarter for a 6-0 lead.  Neither team was able to score in the second quarter, and Sioux Falls Christian led 6-0 at halftime.  The Chargers added another touchdown in the third quarter to push the lead to 12-0.  They then made a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Tri-Valley was held to just 134 yards of offense, 104 rushing yards and 30 passing yards.  Jaden Siemonsma had 11 carries for 47 yards.  Carter Sorenson had six carries for 20 yards.  Eli McFarland was 5-11 passing for 30 yards and an interception.  Tyson Vander Vliet had three catches in the game for 19 yards.

The Mustangs will travel to Chamberlain on Friday, September 17th.

Cardinal Football Evens Record with Win in Colman

After the first three possessions of the game resulted in touchdowns, the defenses played strong for most of the rest of the game between the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, September 10th in Colman.  That is until the Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the last five minutes of the game in a 36-8 victory.

The Cardinals scored on the first offensive possession of the game when Ty Brown scored on a five-yard run with 8:29 to play in the quarter for a 6-0 lead.  Colman-Egan scored two plays later when Dawson Tolley scored on a 52-yard run with 7:42 in the first.  Tolley also scored the two-point conversion for a short-lived 8-6 lead.  The Cardinals made sure the lead was short lived when they scored again with 5:56 remaining in the quarter.  Tate Bunkers scored on a five-yard run, and Nic Gaspar scored the two-point conversion for a 14-8 lead.

The next St Mary touchdown would not come until late in the second quarter.  CJ Smith had a one-yard touchdown run with 2:57 to play in the first half.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the Cardinals led 20-8 at halftime.  The scored remained 20-8 through the entire third quarter and most of the fourth quarter.  Lucas Flemmer had a six-yard run with 4:45 to play in the game.  Smith completed a pass to Gabe Lindeman for the two-point conversion.  The Cardinals scored again with :57 when Brown scored on a two-yard run.  Smith completed the pass to Flemmer for the two-point conversion.

St Mary finished with 382 yards of total offense, 362 rushing yards and  20 passing yards.  They had a total of 19 first downs and were 4-9 on third down attempts.  The Hawks had 202 yards of total offense, 180 rushing yards and 22 passing yards.

The Cardinals nearly had three rushers with over 100 yards in the game.  Brown finished with 16 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns.  Flemmer had 11 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown.  Gaspar finished just one yard shy of 100 with 99 yards on 16 carries.  Bunkers had seven carries for 45 yards and a touchdown.  Smith was 1-3 passing for 20 yards.  Noah Olund had the 20-yard catch.  Lindeman led the defense with 13 total tackles and one sack.  John Pica had nine tackles.  Kyle Bares finished with eight tackles.  Gaspar finished with four tackles.  Smith and Brown each had an interception, and Gaspar and Flemmer had a fumble recovery.

Quarriers Cruise Past Chamberlain in Home Opener

The Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a 42-14 win over the Chamberlain Cubs on Friday, September 10th.   It was the first home game of the season for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids put 21 points on the board in a big hurry in the opening quarter.  Brayden Pankonen found the endzone on a 15 yard run on the second offense play for Dell Rapids.  Four plays later, Pankonen was in the endzone again, this time on a 45-yard interception return.  And just like that Dell Rapids was ahead 14-0.  On their next offensive possession, Austin Henry connected with Landon Ruesink on a 40-yard touchdown pass to give Dell Rapids a 21-0 lead.  Chamberlain got a score in the first quarter to cut the lead to 21-7.  Ruesink scored on a three-yard run in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids led 28-7 at halftime.

The Quarriers scored two more times in the third quarter.  Henry and Ruesink connected again on a 37-yard touchdown pass, and Jade Anstine had a seven-yard touchdown run.  Dell Rapids led 42-7 at the end of the third quarter.  The Cubs  added another score in the fourth quarter.

Dell Rapids finished with 298 yards of total offense, 151 passing yards and 147 rushing yards.  They had a total of 15 first downs and were 5-7 on third down attempts.

Anstine had seven carries for 34 yards and a touchdown.  Treyse Eastman had four carries for 34 yards.  Landon VonHultum had six carries for 33 yards.  Pankonen had five carries for 19 yards and a touchdown.  Ruesink finished with four carries for 13 yards and a rushing touchdown.  Henry was 6-7 passing for 151 yards and two touchdowns.  Ruesink had three catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  Pankonen had two catches for 23 yards, and Aiden Boechler had a catch for 36 yards.

Mason Stubbe and VonHoltum both had five tackles each.  Ruesink, Ian Mason, and Aiden Geraets all finished with four tackles.  Boechler, Will Jaton, and Anstine had three tackles apiece.  Pankonen had two interceptions and a defensive touchdown.

Dell Rapids (2-1) will host Lennox on Friday, September 17th.
