West Central Volleyball Falls Just Short in Lennox

The West Central Trojan volleyball team came up just short in Lennox on Thursday, September 23rd in Lennox.  The back-and-forth match went all five sets with the Orioles winning the match.

The first match was within two-to-three points most of the set.  Lennox had a 20-19 lead late, but the Trojans went on a 6-2 run to finish the set and win 25-22.  After an early 10-9 lead by West Central in the second set, Lennox went on an 8-1 run for a 17-11 lead.  The Orioles went on to win the second set 25-17.  Lennox had a number of five-point leads in the third set at  9-4, 12-7, and 18-13.  They pushed the lead to six at 23-17, but West Central went on an 8-0 run to steal the third set 25-23.

The Orioles responded with a 5-0 run to start the fourth set.  The Trojans tied the set at 8-8, but Lennox went on a 12-4 run for a 20-12 advantage.  The Orioles won the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth set.  The early stages of the fifth set went back and forth, but Lennox built an 8-5 lead.  The lead was increased to five points at 12-7.  West Central pulled within a point at 12-11.  Lennox got the next two points for a 14-11 lead.  Again the Trojans got within a point at 14-13, but Lennox got the final point to win the fifth set 15-13 and win the match.

Kaia Gabbert had five aces. Grace Harden had 13 kills.  Hanna Lee finished with 31 set assists and four blocks.  Jocelyn Nilson had a team-high 10 digs.  Aubree Miller also had four blocks in the match.

Madison Rallies in Volleyball Win at Tri-Valley

The Madison Bulldogs rallied to win three straight sets after dropping the first one to the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, September 23rd.

Tri-Valley, playing in their fourth straight home match, took the opening set by a score of 25-21.  The Bulldogs, however, rallied to win the next three to win the match.  Madison won by set scores of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-17.

Jenna Hanson had 16 digs and two ace serves.  McKenzie Atwood had 11 digs.  Nevaeh Grann had three ace serves and three set assists.  Erica Bicknase tallied six kills and three blocks.  Megan Wenzel had four kills.  Maddie Wenzel finished with a team-high four assists.  Brooklyn Steiben led the team with 10 set assists.

The Mustangs head back on the road on Thursday, September 30th.  They travel to Salem to play the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars.

Quarrier Cheer Team Places 2nd at Sioux Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team competed in the six-team Sioux Valley Invite on Thursday, September 23rd.

Dell Rapids finished second with a total of 124.5 points.  Sioux Valley placed first with 181 points.  Deubrook was third just a half point behind Dell Rapids with 124 points.  Brookings cheer team placed fourth followed by Redfield and then Arlington-Lake Preston.

The Quarriers will be at the O’Gorman Invite at O’Gorman High School on Tuesday, September 28th for their next competition.

Quarriers and Cardinals Compete at Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite

Both the Dell Rapids Quarriers and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country teams participated in the Dell Rapids Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, September 22nd.

The Quarrier girls finished sixth as a team with 80 points.  The Cardinals were eighth with 108 points.

Three Race at Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite for Mustangs

Brie Peters, Lizzy Dahl, and Teagin Gacke represented the Tri-Valley Mustang varsity cross country team at the Dell Rapids Invite on Wednesday, September 30th at Rocky Run Golf Course.

Peters had a great run finishing fourth with a time of 21:42.79.  Dahl placed 46th with a time of 25:17.94.  Gacke completed the race in 21:47.22 for a 49th place finish.

They will be at the Tanager Invite at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion on Monday, September 27th.

Two Runners Place 3rd at Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite for Trojans

The West Central Trojan cross country team participated in the Dell Rapids Invite on Wednesday, September 22nd  at Rocky Run Golf Course.

The girls team finished third with 53 points.  Flandreau was first with 42 points, and Tea Area was second with 52 points.  Maelee Krempges had a third place finish individually with a time of 19:43.76.  Aubrey Borns was 12th with a time of 22:27.30.  Drew Caffrey finished 16th in a time of 22:34.07.  Ellie McDonald (33rd) had a time of 24:00.02.

The boys team placed fourth with a total of 73 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was first with 27 points.  Flandreau placed second with 52 points, and Tea Area was third with 70 points.  Ben Strunk also had a third place finish individually with a time of 18:11.29.  Jonathon Roth placed 17th with a time of 19:01.94.  Jacob Peterson was 24th in a time of 19:40.75.  Griffin Stallman (31st) had a time of 20:17.17.  Blake Stark (36th) finished in 20:58.14.  Kyper Hilger (46th) completed in 21:31.10.

Garretson Survives Upset-Minded Quarriers

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team had one thing on their mind on Tuesday, September 21st, and that was to get a statement win over the #4 ranked Garretson Blue Dragons.  The Quarriers did just about that, but the Blue Dragons held off the Quarriers for a five-set win.

After an early 7-7 tie in the opening set, the Quarriers gained some momentum.  Dell Rapids went on an 8-2 run for a 15-9 lead.  The lead grew to 10 points at 22-12.  Garretson couldn’t overcome the lead, and Dell Rapids took the first set 25-17.

The Quarriers used that energy to build an early 6-1 lead in the second set.  The Blue Dragons were able to stop the Quarrier run and go on one of their own.  Garretson responded with a 9-1 run for a 10-7 lead.  Dell Rapids was able to regain the lead at 15-14 and push that lead to three at 17-14.  The set was once again tied at 19-19 before Garretson finished on a 6-2 advantage for a 25-21 win.

The Blue Dragons were able to build a 12-6 lead at the midway point of the third set.  The Quarriers were able to cut the lead in half at 15-12, but that was as close as they could get.  Garretson went on an 8-1 run for a 10-point advantage, 23-13, and won the third set 25-15 for a 2-1 match lead.

Garretson again got out to a lead in the fourth set, this time at 12-7.  Dell Rapids rallied to tie the score at 14-14.  The Quarriers then went on a 6-2 run for a 20-16 advantage.  Dell Rapids would not lose the lead and won the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.

The fifth set went back-and-forth early.  The score was tied at each point up to 5-5.  The Quarriers took the first lead of more than one point and scored five straight for a 10-5 lead.  Garretson called a timeout and were able to regroup.  After the timeout, the Blue Dragons scored eight straight points for a 13-10 lead.  Dell Rapids was only able to get it 14-12 as Garretson took the set 15-12 to win the match.

Sophi Randall had eight kills, two ace serves, 20 blocks, 11 digs, and 12 set assists.  Kenzie Garry finished the match with nine kills, seven blocks, and five digs.  JoJo Henry added seven kills, three ace serves, two blocks, and nine digs.  Riley Hill finished with four kills, four ace serves, five blocks, 11 digs, and 17 set assists.  Lexi Ingalls had 11 digs on defense.  Lauryn Kloth had five kills, 10 blocks, and five digs.  Kylee Fiddelke had two kills and seven blocks.

Dell Rapids (7-6) will travel to Flandreau on Thursday, September 23rd.

Garretson Girls Soccer Falls to Dakota Valley in Final Home Match

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team held their final home match of the 2021 season on Tuesday, September 21st.  The Blue Dragons hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers, and the Panthers won the match, 2-0.

The first goal for the Panthers came late in the first half.  With 3:15 remaining, Dakota Valley got behind the Garretson defense on a break-away and got the goal for a 1-0 lead.  The Panthers scored a second-half goal with 11:07 to play to make the score 2-0.

Garretson currently had a 2-9-1 record and will finish their season on the road at Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 23rd.

West Central Volleyball Falls to #2 Dakota Valley

The second-ranked Dakota Valley Panthers took a straight-set win over the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, September 21st in Hartford.  The Panthers won by set scores of 25-3, 25-9, and 25-11.  The loss drops the Trojans to below .500 on the season at 6-7.

Kaia Gabbert led the team in kills with three in the match.  Hanna Lee had an ace serve.  Aubree Miller had a block up front, and Jocelyn Nilson had a team-high five digs.

West Central takes to the road on Thursday, September 23rd when they travel to Lennox.

Cardinal Volleyball Scores Home Win over Howard

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team picked up a big Region 4B win over the Howard Tigers on Tuesday, September 21st.  The match needed five sets, but the Cardinals won at home by scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-5.

In the opening set, St Mary kept about a three-point lead early.  The lead grew to six points at 13-7, but the Tigers pulled within a point at 13-12 with a 5-0 run.  St Mary kept the lead and continued to keep a two-to-three point advantage.  Howard got within a point again at 20-19, but the Cardinals finished the set on a 5-3 run for the win.

The second set went back-and-forth in the early stages.  The set was tied a number of times with the latest tie score being 8-8.  Howard then went on a 5-0 run for a 13-8 lead.  The Cardinals were able to get within a point, but the Tigers held off St Mary in the second set for the 25-20 win.

The Cardinals got out to a big lead in the third set, racing out to a 9-3 advantage.  They grew the lead to 10 points at 17-7.  The Tigers put together a rally of their own and cut the lead to two points, 17-15, but the Cardinals ended then run and pushed the lead back to six at 21-15.  St Mary took the third set 25-18.

Neither team was able to get much of an advantage throughout most of the fourth set.  They traded one-point leads and ties until the score was 19-19.  The Cardinals scored the next two points to lead 21-19, but Howard finished the set on a 6-1 run for a 25-22 win to force a fifth set.

The Cardinals came out of the set break with high energy and scored the first five points of the fifth set.  Howard got the next three points to make the score 5-3, but the Cardinals would not lose the lead.  St Mary went on a 9-1 run to lead 14-4 before winning the set and match at 15-5.

Courtney Brown had a monster match for St Mary.  She had 24 kills, 28 digs, and three blocks.  Maya Heinitz finished with 15 kills, 14 digs, and three ace serves. Brianna Lindeman added 26 set assists, 11 digs, and two ace serves.  Addy Gilbert finished with nine kills and two blocks.  Ella Griffin had 16 set assists and an ace.  Whitney Warwick added 11 digs.

St Mary (9-2) will host the Arlington Cardinals on Thursday, September 23rd.
