Wood Ducks Drop Final Cornbelt League Game to Salem

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks hosted the Salem Cubs in the final regular season Cornbelt League game on Sunday, July 17th.  Salem scored two times in the top of the first inning and held for the 4-1 victory.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth.  Salem added another run and then pushed the lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the ninth.  Owen Snethen drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth for the only Wood Duck run.

Nathan Adrian had two hits, one a double.  Austin King, Ryan Healy, and Logan Colwill all had hits.  Snethen had a single and an RBI.  Preston Riddle pitched eight innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on 10 hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.  Adrian pitched one inning and allowed an earned run on two hits with one strikeout.

Gamecocks Win Final Two Games of Cornbelt Season

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks won their final two Cornbelt League games.  They defeated Lennox 8-2 on Thursday, July 14th and then beat Colman 7-2 on Sunday, July 17th.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 8, Lennox 2

Three runs in the bottom of the first inning was enough for the Gamecocks on Thursday against Lennox.  The Gamecocks held a 3-0 lead until the top of the fourth.  Lennox scored one run in the top of the fourth for a 3-1 score.  The Gamecocks then scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh for an 8-1 lead.  Lennox got one more run in the top of the ninth.

Kyle Bailey had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Broc Haldeman had two hits and two RBIs.  Joe Hanisch finished with two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Noah Vettruss added two singles and an RBI.  Cam Quigley had two hits, and Devon Garry had a double.  Brandon McKnight pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.  Micah Warrington pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on four hits with one strikeout.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 7, Colman 2

The Gamecocks had another three-run first inning on Sunday against the Colman As.  They added another run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 5-0.  Both teams scored a run in each the seventh and eighth innings.

Haldeman finished with three hits and an RBI.  Bailey and Adam Hentges both had two singles and two RBIs each.  McKnight added three singles.  Drew Maras had two singles.  Luke Wodahl and Vettruss each had a single.  Chad Morrison had an RBI.  Cole Barthel pitched seven innings and allowed an earned run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Landry Knight pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and three walks with five strikeouts.

Madison Legion Takes Two from Hartford/Humboldt

Madison legion won both games of a doubleheader against Hartford/Humboldt on Friday, July 15th in Humboldt.

Madison 6, Hartford/Humboldt 1

Two three-run innings led Madison to a 6-0 lead before winning 6-1 in the opening game.  Madison had a three-run inning in the top of the third and another three-run inning in the top of the fifth.  Hartford/Humboldt scored a run in the bottom of the sixth.  Loren Jacobson walked with the bases loaded for their only run.

Deuce Sherrard, Bennett Sebert, and Gavin Koch all had a single in the game.  Jacobson had an RBI.  S Gabbert pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Derek Renken pitched 1 2/3 innings and recorded a strikeout.  Owen Heath also pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Madison 5, Hartford/Humboldt 3

Madison scored four times in the top of the sixth to a get a 5-3 come-from-behind win in the second game.  They scored one run in the top first for an early 1-0 lead.  Hartford/Humboldt got the next three runs.  Seth Gabbert had an RBI single in the bottom of the second.  Connor Siemonsma gave Hartford/Humboldt the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.  Logan Maras pushed the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, but Madison then had their four-run sixth inning  to steal the win.

Siemonsma, Maras, and Gabbert all had a single and RBI.  Sebert finished with a double.  Braden Herr also had a single.  Renken pitched two innings and allowed an unearned run on a hit and walk with three strikeouts.  Sebert pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Koch pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed an earned run on a hit and walk.

Regular Season Ends in a Loss for Dell Rapids Legion

Dell Rapids legion lost their final regular season game on Friday, July 15th.  Dell Rapids dropped a 7-2 game on the road to the Renner Royals.

Renner got the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the top of the second.  CJ Smith cranked a solo home run over the left field fence.  The Royals took the lead again, 2-1, in the bottom of the third.  The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth.  Will Jaton tied the game with an RBI single.  Renner, however, broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the sixth for the win.

Smith finished with a home run and RBI.  Jaton had a single and RBI.  Landon Ruesink had two hits, and Aiden Boechler also had a single.  Jaton pitched three innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks.  Brayden Pankonen pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks with a strikeout.  Joe Rechtenbaugh pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk.

Dell Rapids will be hosting the Region 2B tournament Monday, July 18th through Thursday, July 21st.  They will play the first game of the tournament against Flandreau starting at 12:30 p.m. at Rickeman Field.

Colman Hangs on to Win over Dell Rapids PBR

Colman scored four early runs and held on to a 4-3 win over Dell Rapids PBR at Rickeman Field on Thursday, July 14th.

The A’s scored two runs in the top of the first and two more runs in the third for a 4-0 lead.  Trey Randel had an RBI single for PBR in the bottom of the fourth.  Tanner Solbeg had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, and Beau Behrend had an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 4-3, but PBR could not tie the game.

Solberg had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI.  Randel also had two hits and an RBI.  Grant Sweeter added two singles.  Riley Hoffman, Tim Wilhelmsen, and Conner Spindler all had a single.  Behrend had an RBI.  Randel pitched five innings and allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.  Behrend pitched four innings and allowed two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 16U Splits Doubleheader with Volga

Dell Rapids 16U split a doubleheader with Volga at home on Thursday, July 14th.  Volga took the first game 11-7, but Dell Rapids won the second game 4-0.

Two runs in the top of the fifth inning secured an 11-7 win in the first game for Volga.  Both teams scored four runs in the first inning.  After four runs by Volga in the top of the first, Lincoln Fersdahl had an RBI single, and Talan Millage had a three-run double.

Volga got two runs in the top of the third.  Grady Lamer had an RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-5.  Volga scored three more times in the top of the fourth.  Dell Rapids responded with two in the bottom of the inning.  Sutton Williams had a two-run double to make it a 9-7 game.  Volga, however, got two runs in the top of the fifth.

Lamer had two hits and an RBI.  Quinn Carr also had two hits.  Millage finished with a double and three RBIs.  Williams also had a double with two RBIs.  Fersdahl finished with a single and RBI.  Cooper Frost and Luke Schoolmeester both had a single.  Carr pitched  3 1/3 innings and allowed nine earned runs on eight hits and six walks wiht six strikeouts.  Frost pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on four walks.  Millage pitched 1/3 of an inning.

Dell Rapids 4, Volga 0

Dell Rapids earned the five-hit shutout in the second game as the visiting team.  Millage had an RBI single in the top of the second to start they scoring.  They added three more runs in the top of the third.  Tad Tjaden had a two-run single, and Frost had an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Tjaden had a hit and two RBIs.  Frost and Millage both had a single and an RBI.  Williams, Ethan Kringen, and Lamer all had a single.  Millage pitched all five innings and allowed five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Six-Run Eighth Leads to Win for West Central 16U

West Central 16U scored six times in the top of the eighth to get a 9-4 win over Madison Gold on Thursday, July 14th in Madison.

Madison took the first lead, 2-0, with a two-run bottom of the second inning.  West Central tied the game with two runs in the top of the third.  Will Nester had an RBI single, and Keaton Vessells had an RBI ground ball.  Madison grabbed the lead again, 3-2, with a run in the bottom of the third.  Carter Evans scored on an error in the top of the fourth to tie the game 3-3.

The game would remained tied 3-3 after seven innings to go into extra innings. That’s when West Central put a big number on the board.  Maison Schuldt had an RBI double.  Jesse Jost added a two-run single.  Landen Holewa had an RBI ground out, Jost scored on an error, and Vessells capped off the inning with an RBI double.  Madison got just one run in the bottom of the eighth.

Nester had three hits and an RBI.  Jost had a hit and two RBIs.  Vessells and Schuldt each had a double and an RBI.  Murray also had a double.  Evans finished with a single, and Holewa had an RBI.  Vessells pitched five innings and allowed three runs, none earned, on one hit and five walks with nine strikeouts.  Holewa pitched three innings and allowed an unearned run on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley 16U Gets One Hit Against Baltic

Baltic used two big innings to score 18 runs in an 18-0 win over Tri-Valley 16U on Thursday, July 14th.  Baltic scored 11 times in the top of the first inning and then seven more in the top of the third.

Tri-Valley was held to just one hit in the game.  Mayson Rise had a one-out single in the bottom of the third inning.  Benjamin Myhre pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed 11 earned runs on 11 hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Everett Althoff pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed seven earned runs on four hits and four walks with one strikeout.  Holden Rise pitched one inning and allowed one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

Wood Ducks Drop Two on Back-to-back Days

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks dropped two games on back-to-back days on Wednesday, July 13th and Thursday, July 14th.

The Wood Ducks hosted the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Wednesday in a make-up game from earlier in July.  Dell Rapids scored three times in the top of the first inning and never trailed in a 14-4 win.  The Wood Ducks scored twice in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-2.  Dell Rapids, however, would get two more runs in the third, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.  Humboldt/Hartford got two more runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-4 game, but Dell Rapids scored six times in the final two innings.

JJ Jesson had a home run, single, and two RBIs.  Austin King finished with a triple.  Ryan Healy, Presten Riddle, Josiah Stroup, and Jacob Ellens all had a single.

The Wood Ducks then took a 16-1 loss to Canova on Thursday.

Mudcats Win Steak Hits 10, but Then Snapped Next Day

The Dell Rapids Mudcats played on back-to-back nights and split in those two games.  Dell Rapids defeated the Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks on Wednesday, July 13th to extend their winning streak to 10 games.  Salem, however, ended the winning streak with a defeat of the Mudcats on Thursday, July 14th.

Three runs in the top of the first inning put the Mudcats in front right away and they stayed their the rest of the game on Wednesday.  The Wood Ducks scored twice in the bottom of the first for a 3-2 score.  Dell Rapids got two more runs in the third, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.  Humboldt/Hartford scored two more times in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 8-4.  Dell Rapids then scored six times in the final two innings.

Dalton Allen had three hits, two doubles and a single.  Chad Hunt finished with three singles.  Kris Regas had a home run and a double.  Logan Stone finished with two hits.  Travis Peters, Elijah Story, and Jordan Spaeth all had a hit.  Allen also took the win on the mound.

Salem 11, Dell Rapids Mudcats 1

Salem scored two runs in the bottom of the first for an early 2-0 lead, and they never looked back to end the 10-game winning streak by the Mudcats on Thursday.  Allen scored the only run for Dell Rapids in the top of the third.  Salem then had two runs in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth, and another run in the sixth inning.

Dell Rapids was held to just six hits in the game.  Lehnen had two hits.  Allen, Mark Abrahamson, Regas, and Stone all had one hit each.  Abrahamson took the loss on the mound.
